Moffat County’s ‘Atticus Finch’ By JOSHUA ROBERTS DAILY PRESS WRITER

10 years. Mayer frequents Mathers’ for more than just a drink; in his bartender, he finds a welcoming smile and friendly conversation.

Local attorney Sherman Romney never envisioned himself before the U.S. Supreme Court, hammering away at the justices with the finer points of law. And although he dabbled in it for a time, he never really took to criminal defense work, either. Rather, the Castlegar, British Columbia, native and longtime Craig resident had a subtler image of what he wanted his legal career to look like. “I didn’t really picture myself as being the courtroom attorney,” said Romney, who has lived in Craig for about 17 years. “It was more of what I’m doing now, which is kind of the smalltown, transactional attorney. “It was like the old Atticus Finch, small-town attorney. Hopefully, you can help people solve problems.” Romney, a former municipal court judge and later Craig city attorney, has worked with hundreds of local clients over the years in his private practice; he now primarily handles family, civil and business law. He is the owner of Romney Law Office, with locations at 415 W. Victory

SERVERS: Mathers-Call, Padilla like serving because of the people they encounter Mike Mayer Craig resident about Mathers’ Lounge & Café bartender Erin Mathers-Call

For Padilla, waiting tables comes as naturally to her as smiling. Padilla said she started working in restaurants when she was 13. “I worked in my mother’s restaurant,” she said. “And I hated being a dishwasher, so I started waiting tables.” She’s only worked at Tin Cup for two months, but she said many people in the community probably know her from her other positions at the Village Inn, the Holiday Inn of Craig and Subway. “I just love it,” she said. “I get to meet a lot of new people and I try to be really friendly and not bug them too much.” She flitted from table to table Thursday, refilling drinks and talking to her customers as if they were old friends. She wore her waist-length black hair in a ponytail and had outlined her eyes with glittering purple eyeliner. At a corner table, Tin Cup regular Lorraine Kawcak had no idea the waitress about to

serve her lunch had received the honor. “Oh, that’s neat,” Kawcak said when she heard the news. “She’s really great, really attentive. It’s her customer service. She really makes you feel taken care of.” Serving the community their food and drink isn’t a career for either Mathers-Call or Padilla. Both women have other obligations and passions. Padilla is studying to get her associate’s degree and is interested in psychology. Mathers-Call has two sons, ages 3 and 5, and only works one or two shifts each week for the family business. But both find joy in being liaison from kitchen to table and from beer keg to chilled glass. “It’s just like hanging out,” Mathers-Call said. “People come in to have fun. And we want them to have a fun time, and a safe evening.” For Padilla, even one or two unhappy customers will not ruin her mood, nor will she pass on a bad vibe to her other guests. “As long as you do your job, you can have fun, too,” she said. And, he’s not the only one to voice his appreciation for the woman who pours his whiskey. Craig Daily Press readers voted Mathers-Call Moffat County’s best bartender in the 2010 Best of Moffat County contest. “Best bartender in the county?” Mayer said with a glance across the bar. “Heck, she’s probably the best in the whole dang country.” For Mathers-Call, bartending is less of a job than it is an evening with friends and family. Her uncle, Tom Mathers, owns the bar, and MathersCall remembers spending afternoons there as a child. “It’s a fun atmosphere,” she said. “All my friends hang out here, and I just enjoy being around people and the conversation.” And, for many of her regulars, she’s more than just a bartender. “Erin and her whole family, they’re like my best friends,” Mayer said. Mathers-Call said she was shocked when she heard she was voted Moffat County’s best bartender. “I have no idea why, honestly,” she said. “I mean, I’ve only been working a few shifts a week the last few years. “I think I just treat them as people. I don’t treat them as drunks.” A few miles away Thursday morning, overlooking the Yampa Valley Golf Course, another Moffat County woman was serving up drinks, smiles, food and conversation to a few tables at the Tin Cup Grill. Vanessa Padilla, 21, was voted Moffat County’s best waitress in the 2010 Best of Moffat County contest.

“Best bartender in the county? Heck, she’s probably the best in the whole dang country.”

Allergies are disruptive

By JIM MULLEN

To the editor: With the arrival of spring, seasonal allergies can wreak havoc on our lives. People with asthma may have a particularly difficult time during this season. Because of the significant increase in allergy symptoms during the spring, May is National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month. Allergies can range from mild to severe and can be very disruptive for the sufferer and their families. Symptoms of allergies include watery, itchy eyes, sneezing, runny nose, cough and scratchy throat. For people with asthma, symptoms can worsen making well-controlled asthma hard to manage. These changes in symptoms can even send the sufferer to the doctor or hospital for treatment. For those who suffer from seasonal allergies, the first few glimpses of spring can spell trouble and months of struggle to manage asthma and/or allergy symptoms. To head off some of the potential problems, be proactive to minimize symptoms. If you have a history of seasonal allergies, seek medical advice or start taking your allergy medications at the first sign of trouble. For those with asthma, there are ways to identify symptoms of an impending asthma “flare-up” before it gets out of control. The National Health Lung and Blood Institute has established national guidelines for asthma management that “roadmap” how asthma should be treated based on the severity of symptoms.

Wrestle mania By JANET SHERIDAN FOR THE DAILY PRESS

Recently, a friend of mine complained about the TV-viewing habits of her preteen daughter: “I can’t believe what she watches. Her favorite shows are mindless, but she hangs on every word.” In 1957, my mother felt the same about my program selecJanet Sheridan tions. I accepted a rectangle of red construction paper and stepped back in line with my best girlfriend, Charlie. The co-founders of the fan club we were joining, Sandy and Jean Dericco, war-whooped in celebration. I grinned and examined the hand-colored cutout glued to the paper: a dancing Indian brave with writing on his manly chest: “Congratulations! You’re a member of the Chief Kit Fox Fan Club!! Happy wrestling!!!” The Dericco sisters, unlikely wrestling fans, possessed traits all mothers wished for their daughters: They received straight-A report cards and laundered their P.E. uniforms. Blonde curls sparkling like halos, they never gossiped, forgave those of us who did, visited shut-ins, and wept during the assembly featuring a handicapped man who typed with his toes.

I don’t know why these fresh-faced saints started a fan club for the professional wrestler, Chief Kit Fox of All Star Wrestling. Perhaps they tired of being perfect; maybe they enjoyed watching scantily clad men grapple. I know why I joined: free popcorn and a learning opportunity. I had long employed wrestling to subdue my sister, Barbara, when she got uppity. Perhaps I could pick up some pointers. The club of four gathered in the Dericco home. We flopped in front of the TV topped by a prowling black-panther figurine and waited for the clamor of the ringside bell to begin the mayhem. We liked Gorilla Monsoon and Sputnik Monroe. We despised Gorgeous George with his dyed-blonde ringlets and tuxedoed valet who spread rose petals where George walked and sprayed Chanel No. 5 around the ring. But our passion peaked on the Saturdays that featured a grudge match between our hero, Chief Kit Fox, and Professor Roy Shires. Kit Fox, beloved by the crowd, entered the arena in a war bonnet to the noisy approval of fans doing the scalper sidearm, one of his specialized moves. His enemy, Professor Roy Shires, strutted toward the ring wearing a mortarboard, graduation gown, and glasses, carrying a fistful of pencils.

Inside the ropes he yelled about Western pencil necks, breaking the pencils he carried and flinging them at the crowd that bellowed its hatred of the sissy Easterner. We booed and roared with the crowd, ecstatic when Kit Fox administered a tomahawk chop or successfully employed his finishing move, the bow and arrow. When he won, we spilled popcorn, spewed root beer, danced and whooped. On those dark occasions when the Professor won with a bombs-away, a diving kneedrop from the top rope to the chief’s throat, Charlie and I walked home in despairing silence. After we parted, I walked on alone, thinking I might feel better if I approached the house stealthily and surprised Barbara with my signature move, the Bray belly-bomb. I don’t remember how long we gathered for All Star Wrestling, but I remember why we disbanded: Sandy got a boyfriend, and Jean got grounded. Her parents overheard the graphic obscenities she shouted when a spectator hit the chief with a folding chair. I still have my official handmade membership card and vivid memories of the show we watched while other girls our age tuned into American Bandstand — deprived girls who never knew the thrill of delivering a well-aimed tomahawk chop to the back of a sister’s head.

Spoiler alert! If you haven’t had a colonoscopy yet, don’t read any further. I don’t want you to miss all the fun. First of all, everyone’s happy to see you. The doctor was amazingly cheerful as he VILLAGE told me he’d never IDIOT perforated anyone’s colon yet, but there was a one in 5,000 chance he would. “How many colonoscopies have you done?” “About 4,999. Now if you could just sign this form that says I told Jim Mullen you about the onein-5,000 chance, we can give you something to relax, and I’ll go to work.” The guy sticking electrode clips to my chest couldn’t have been happier. The nurse who put a toasty-hot flannel blanket over me also seemed happy. All I could think about was, please finish this so I can run out of here and get something to eat. I’d been on special diets for a week. Don’t eat this; don’t eat that; two days before only liquids; one day before only clear liquids. Drink this awful stuff and take these pills the night before. When I got to the clinic, the form asked me if I had taken all the Miralax and the Dulcolax that had been prescribed. I checked “yes.” The next question was “What were the results?” I don’t know that it’s possible to put down the results on the 1-inchlong blank space that was left for me on the form. There wasn’t enough room to say “I got no sleep at all due to the fact that I had to run to the bathroom once an hour on the hour for 12 hours. Several times I got there with just seconds to spare. I am seven pounds lighter than I was yesterday, and my stomach is queasy. I haven’t had any fruit or vegetables in five days and I may never eat chicken consomme again.” Compared to that last night, the colonoscopy was a picnic. It only took about 15 minutes, it was painless, and it turns out that I have the colon of a 16-year-old. “A big, fat, out-of-shape 16-year-old,” said the doctor as he handed me a summary of the procedure with color pictures of my colon included. “Do you want me to e-mail them to your friends and family?” “I’ll just post them on my Facebook page when I get home.” The one thing they forgot to mention about the procedure was that the doctor pumps air in your colon as they do the colonoscopy to open it up, and the air will cause discomfort until you let it out. “What does that mean, let it out?” “Don’t hold it in, let it out.” See MULLEN on page 7

U.S. coal-fired power plants are already clean and very cost efficient. Why would you want to artificially inflate business costs, consumer prices and home utility bills during such tough economic times, or anytime for that matter? In Spain, for every green job that was created, two jobs were lost. Let’s just thank the United States right now. I believe that China is making our wind-powered turbines. They are the current beneficiaries of the green technology surge. Closer to home, we need to fight for the energy industry jobs that power our local economy. Coal, gas and oil. Colorado House Bill 10-1365 is a fiasco and something must be done to kill its implementation. Our community is in serious peril from this lobbyist-driven legislation and its full consequences. Electricity prices will rise, local jobs will be lost and the world will not be a better place.

These guidelines are a “stepup/step-down” management plan, which means that treatment can be more aggressive as symptoms occur and decreased once good control is achieved. Awareness of what triggers your asthma or allergies can definitely make spring allergies more manageable. Be proactive, don’t ignore your symptoms, and try to identify what triggers your symptoms. If you have questions or concerns about allergies and asthma, please talk with your medical provider.

nal Democrats and far too many congressional Republicans. Over-regulation of business is stifling the U.S. economy now and has been responsible, in large part, to outsourcing of U.S. jobs overseas the last few decades. Now, heavy taxation will be added to the already heavily burdensome federal regulations that small businesses and large corporations must wade through and overcome. (Read higher prices, lost productivity and very little incentive for success.) A week before the 2008 presidential election, then candidate Obama said, “We are five days away from fundamentally changing the United States of America.” Not just candidate hyperbole or rhetoric. He was chillingly frank. In a filmed interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, as a Presidential candidate, Obama stated, “Under my energy plan, electricity prices would necessarily skyrocket.” Give him credit. He is transparent. Unless serious steps are taken now, right now, energy prices are indeed poised to skyrocket.

A lesson about transforming love By PAT JONES DIRECTOR, LOVE INC

I learned a lesson about transforming love this week. There I was in a busy airport, weaving my way in and out of a throng of people, when a young woman stopped walking and just stood in the doorway, visiting with a friend. She couldn’t see me, so I started to edge around her. Her friend told her to move and she bumped me. I just smiled and went around her. She got huffy and said something. I walked around the corner, but gave a sassy reply over my shoulder.I went back to my seat thinking, “Harrumph, I didn’t do

anything wrong and how dare she be huffy with me!” Not a big deal, I know. It happens all the time to a lot of people in crowds. But the lesson started here. I was wrong. My attitude was wrong, and I knew it. If I had seen her again, I would have apologized, but I didn’t as she went on to where she was headed and I came on home. I suddenly envisioned that all poorly chosen words are like an ugly, black tarry substance in our hearts. In the book “The Oath,” by Frank Peretti, the author expressed a picture of sin with just such a vivid picture. He depicted how evil and sin showed

in the lives of the residents of Hyde River by coming to the surface, out of their hearts, to ooze in long, sticky, stringy messes that acted like chewing gum on a hot day. It stuck to everything it touched and wouldn’t come off. After a while, the residents got used to it and didn’t notice it. Our harsh words are like that. They splatter like a paintball and ooze everywhere. When you’ve scored a direct hit, you contaminate the person you are aiming at. But those words also leave collateral damage. The bystanders that get hit with the sticky splatters feel ugly, too. And after a while, just like the fictional residents of Hyde

River, you don’t notice that you are doing it or that it’s being done to you. Words of love and kindness are different. They are like beautiful golden glitter that reflects the light and shimmers and shines. They coat those at whom you aim with golden light. Words of love and kindness will also effect collaterally, and can cause those around to feel decorated and special. That beauty will draw others to the source of the light. Take that picture farther. Imagine a community filled with people covered with “sparkling love hits.” The teen in the morning rushing to get to school, yourself going about your

DID YOU KNOW?

The Church has fallen prey to Satan’s attacks.(2Corinthianis 2:11) The resulting effects upon the spreading of the Gospel (The Good News about Christ) are having a Tsunami-like impact. This week we will examine Wave #5 – Our Real Problem Is That We Need To Rephrase The Gospel. Many Christian Churches are attempting to re-package the Gospel message either because of weak understanding of the Bible or in an effort to attract more people to church. Whatever the motive, changing the Gospel is warned against in the Bible. The Church at Galatia was doing just that, changing the Gospel. Paul rebuked them for their tolerance of false teaching. “...[T]here be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.” (Galatians 1:7b-8) Paul wasn’t saying to do it the way he did because he said so, but rather because God said so. “But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.”(Galatians 1:11-12) Satan’s ploy is to convince the Church that it is good to be tolerant of versions of the Gospel other than that spoken of in God’s Word. The Church must combat the Tsunami-like waves of attack by the Deceiver on the Gospel. A strong levee will be built against these attacks by faithful teaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ as described in the Bible. Paul wrote: “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth...”(Romans 1:16)

busy schedule, your spouse going off to work, children in the neighborhood schoolyard, all going about with “sparkling love hits” and spreading it around as they go through their day. Words of love can transform. How can we have these transforming words of love in us to share if we don’t go to the Source every day? Fill yourself each morning with Bible reading and meditation on God’s Word and you will be loaded with the right ammunition. It’s a valuable lesson to learn. And to the young woman at DID the airport: I’m sorry I didn’t learn it sooner and cover your day in sparkling, transforming The love. spre

Jantz said the nature of law enforcement brings out a sense of family as well. Deputies rely on each other when their lives are in danger, Jantz said, and many deputies often vent about the frustra-

By BRIAN SMITH As with any two people, there are certainly surface-level differences between Tim Jantz and K.C. Hume, two of Moffat County’s most popular public servants. But inside, the two share a passion for public service and helping their community. Jantz, the county sheriff, and Hume, a Craig Fire/Rescue battalion chief, were voted best law enforcement officer and best firefighter, respectively, in the Craig Daily Press’ 2010 Best of Moffat County contest. Jantz is serving his first term as sheriff and is in his 19th year with the sheriff’s office. Hume, who is also the chief investigator for the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office, is in his 11th year of service with Craig Fire/Rescue. Both said they were surprised to hear Moffat County residents decided to recognize them. The humble Hume said he felt honored by the recognition, but feels the award belongs to Craig Fire/Rescue as a whole. “It isn’t just about a single firefighter,” he said. “It takes all of the firefighters to make this what it is.” Jantz said he was “extremely honored” to receive the award and attributed it to his openness to the public. “I really am public-oriented and most people know that,” he said. “They’ll see me at City Market or whatever and they’ll say ‘Hey Tim, do you have a minute? Absolutely.’” Jantz is a self-confessed “work-a-holic,” but occasionally finds time to escape the office. When he is not in uniform, he likes to indulge his appetite for the outdoors by hunting and fishing throughout the county he serves. Jantz said even though he may not be out on the streets as much as he once was, the job still gives him satisfaction. “You never know what is going to hit you when you walk in,” he said. “It is that thinking on your feet, those challenges … it’s not mundane, it is not

Stocks climb due to positive reports topped analysts’ forecasts. It was the market’s second straight winning day after a plunge Tuesday that took the Dow down 213. Greece’s debt problems, one of the triggers for that slide, appeared less dire Wednesday and Thursday, and that allowed investors to focus on the growing signs of healing in the U.S. The Labor Department said first-time claims dipped to 448,000, slightly above analysts’ forecast of 445,000, according to

Thomson Reuters. It was the second weekly drop and lifted hopes that layoffs are slowing. Dealmaking and strong corporate earnings reports added to the growing optimism. Hewlett-Packard said late Wednesday it is buying smart phone maker Palm in an all-cash deal worth $1.4 billion. Acquisitions are a sign that the economy is recovering and companies are comfortable spending cash to build their businesses.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks surged higher after another series of upbeat earnings reports and a reading on unemployment provided more evidence of an improving economy. The Dow Jones industrials rose 122 points Thursday after the Labor Department said initial claims for unemployment benefits fell last week. Megan Cook named best masseuse in Moffat County By BEN BULKELEY DAILY PRESS WRITER

Masseuse Megan Cook doesn’t have magic fingers. What she does have is the title of top masseuse in Moffat County. Cook, 22, was voted the top masseuse in the Craig Daily Press’ 2010 Best of Moffat County contest. Cook said there is one thing that makes her work stand out. “I love my clients,” she said. “I try to get to know my clients on a personal level. “I’m committed to making their lives better by making them feel better on a day-to-day basis.” Cook operates at Natural

“I love my clients. I try to get to know my clients on a personal level. I’m committed to making their lives better by making them feel better on a day-to-day basis.” Megan Cook Moffat County’s top masseuse, on why she thinks she was voted as the best

Health Care Center, 450 Center St. “I’ve been working here for two and a half years with (chiropractor) Rita Petersen,” she said. “I do deep tissue massage and I work with a lot of people who are seeing Rita, too.” Cook, a Moffat County High

School graduate, attended the Institute of Therapeutic Massage of Western Colorado in Grand Junction and is currently state licensed. “I got out of school, came home for Christmas, got an adjustment, and Rita said ‘We need a massage therapist,’” she said. “I started working January 1 of ’08.” Part of the reason Cook thinks she was voted as top Moffat County masseuse is because she helps people feel better. “I think when people feel that they’re not sore, not aching,” she said. “There is a certain amount of energy that’s transferred. It’s good to have people work

on you.” Being able to relieve pain is one way to be popular, Cook said. “Massages do a lot for muscle aches, shoulder, back and neck pain,” she said. “I use peanut oil and arnica, which is topical pain relief, so people don’t get sore from the massage.” Apart from her customers, Cook said there are numerous other perks to her job. “I love the flexibility of my job,” she said. “I’m only at my job when I have a massage. Being self-employed is pretty cool.” Ben Bulkeley can be reached at 875-1795 or bbulkeley@craigdailypress.com.

Although Holistic Health & Fitness was named the best health club in the Craig Daily Press’ 2010 Best of Moffat County contest, co-owner Karrie Booth said there is always room for improvement. “We’re always open to suggestions on how we can be better,” she said. “We have plenty of room for new programs.” Holistic, 420 Breeze St., opened in April 2007 and boasts more than 9,500-square-feet of usable space, more than 400 members, and 24-hour-a-day access. “The 24-hour access is huge because we don’t get crowded,” Booth said. “It’s spread out.” Booth said the facility’s equipment, atmosphere and programs have also been mentioned as reasons why Holistic was voted the county’s best. “We provide programs for the body, mind and soul,” she said. “We have yoga, meditation and other things that pull it all together for total wellness.” Booth said she and co-owner John Magnuson saw an opportunity to fill a niche in the community when they opened Holistic. “Josh and I were massage therapists, but we did more therapeutic stuff with fitness and nutrition,” she said. “People would ask us, ‘What can I do to not hurt?’ We wanted to build a place to accomplish everything.” Holistic offers mixed martial arts training, kids boxing programs and other seasonal programs. “Right now, we have the Bikini Body Boot Camp,” Booth said. “Basically, it encompasses fitness, and how to set and achieve goals.” Holistic has one intangible that keeps customers coming back, Booth said. “Most people say they can’t put their finger on it,” she said, “but, there is an energy here.”

Yampa River voted best for fishing By BEN BULKELEy DAILY PRESS WRITER

There are several options for casting a line in Northwest Colorado. For the best, Craig Daily Press readers have picked the Yampa River in the 2010 Best of Moffat County contest. The Yampa River stretches across Moffat County, and the reason it’s No. 1 is behind two reasons, said Ron Dellacroce, park manager for Yampa River

State Park. “The first reason it’s the best is diversity,” he said. “The second is access.” The Yampa River contains brown trout, rainbow trout, channel catfish and northern pike all close to town. Fishing near Craig or around Dinosaur is completely different, Dellacroce said. “It’s a little different everywhere you go,” he said. “It’s full of really good places to fish.”

What do you do if you see a parent cheat? Dear Annie: Three years ago, our 7-year-old granddaughter saw her mother kissing another man and told her father (our son). My question is: Was she right to tell him, or should she have spoken to her mother first? This granddaughter’s actions created a situation in her family that no child should have to endure. She still feels guilty for exposing her mother’s affair. When she told our son, he did not react appropriately

and lashed out at the child, as well as his wife. The family is still together, but my granddaughter suffers from stress and anxiety whenever our son reacts to the situation, which he still does on occasion. So, Annie, what would have been the best thing for this child to do when she caught her mother cheating? — Concerned Grandparent Dear Grandparent: There is no “right” answer. The child was too young to do anything other than what she did, and your son was too blindsided to react in a way that would have been less damaging. However, since Dad is still unable to control himself in front of his daughter and she is suffering, please urge the entire family to get into counseling. He should ask the pediatrician for a referral to someone who can specifically help his child. It’s long past time. Dear Annie: I recently began working with my cousin. He runs a small music studio and is training me to do the work. This is truly what I want to do with my life. The problem is, he doesn’t tell me whether or not he’s going to work on any given day. I’m left dressed and ready with no place to go. He also says he has no reason to go to work some days because he’ll have nothing to do — not thinking that I would like to

train during his downtime. I don’t know whether he treats me this way because he doesn’t take me seriously or because we’re related and he doesn’t feel the need to treat me like the rest of his employees. How do I tell him I feel mistreated? — B.B. Dear B.B.: Your cousin may treat you this way because it’s the nature of the job. Instead of talking about mistreatment, discuss your job training, hours and obligations. Ask him how many hours per week he expects you to be at work and if he will please let you know ahead of time when he doesn’t plan to go in. Ask if he wants you to be at work whether he’s there or not. See if you can get him to commit to a basic schedule. Tell him you’d appreciate as many hours of training as he can spare, since you value his expertise and want to learn from the best. Dear Annie: This is in response to “Kentucky,” who didn’t know what to do with her mother’s custom-made vintage wedding dress that she also wore. She assumed no future daughter-in-law would want it since her marriage ended in divorce. May I suggest that she donate it to the local area museum or historical society in her mother’s memory? I am

on our local museum board, and we have some beautiful old wedding dresses. If “Kentucky” doesn’t want to donate it outright, she could give it to the ANNIE’S museum on MAILBOX loan. This way, she can take her grandchildren there and show them the dress. I donated my husband’s service uniform to the museum, and my children used to say they could go visit their Kathy and Marcy dad there. —Minnesota Dear Minnesota: We have received many wonderful suggestions about what to do with “Kentucky’s” wedding gown and will print a few in future columns. Our thanks to all the readers who provided such helpful ideas. Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Good, clean data.

CraigDailyPress.com/CIP or YampaValleyPartners.com Brought to you by:

Some exciting times could be in the offing in the year ahead, where your social life is concerned. There’s a good chance you will make several dynamic new friends who will introduce you to all kinds of innovative, fun things. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) — No matter how astute your investigative skills today, if you’re too negative about your abilities to take advantage of them, they’ll do you little good. Use what you have to the fullest. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) — Should a friend of yours who recently went to bat for you need your help today, drop what you’re doing and assist your pal to the fullest, regardless of how much you’re inconvenienced. CANCER (June 21-July 22) — The thought of being able to gratify your ambitions will provide you with the necessary motivation to go after what you want. However, make sure you’ll be proud of your tactics. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) — Being open and friendly to all is well and good, but make

sure you are extremely cautious about whom you take into your confidence. Someone you would least expect could be an adversary. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) — You have a natural talent of taking that which is old and worn-out and transforming it into something that is functional and useful. Instead of throwing anything out today, use this gift. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) — Far more impressive achievements can be made today if the goals of you and your mate are in harmony. Beautiful music can be made when you both sing off the same sheet. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22) — Things can be far harder to achieve when you have to depend upon others to get them. You’ll realize today that when you stand on your own two feet, things happen more quickly and easily. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21) — You shouldn’t be afraid to take a chance on what you want as long as you don’t bet a dollar to make a dime. Be realistic about your

gambles and you can come out a winner. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) — Although at times today you might find it hard to believe, conditions in general are actually rather good. Don’t let anything negative that happens screen out any of the opportunities surrounding you. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — Having preconceived ideas about how to handle things of a commercial nature could be more detrimental than constructive. Keep an open mind and wait for things to unfold before acting. PISCES (Feb. 20-March 20) — Be optimistic, but not to the point of ignoring good common sense. Be absolutely certain you know what you are doing before embarking on a risky venture. ARIES (March 21-April 19) — As long as you acknowledge and consider the viewpoints of others, you shouldn’t be afraid to strongly defend your beliefs. Speak up and vigorously make your points.

tions of the job to each other. He encourages the family aspect of the job and enjoys being part of it. Jantz can often be seen in the Moffat County Public Saftey Center interacting, sharing experiences and joking with his staff. But, that doesn’t mean Jantz doesn’t take his job seriously. “There are times when the rubber meets the road, when it is time to step in, it is what I get paid for,” he said. “People

I think forget (because) they don’t see me in that mood as much when I used to be a street officer. “I take human life very seriously. I detest death.” Hume said there is also a serious and burdensome side to his work with Craig Fire/Rescue as well. With the adrenaline and excitement built from entering a burning building, Hume said, comes the emotional burden of sometimes dealing with death and tragedy. “There are calls that you will

take to your grave,” he said. “We see and deal with things people shouldn’t have to deal with. “We see people on their worst day… and that can begin to wear on you from an individual standpoint.” But, it would seem Moffat County voters recognize and appreciate Hume and Jantz for their service as evidenced by their latest recognition. Thank you

Moffat County for voting “Craig’s Classy Little Gift Shop” the Best Gift Shop in Moffat County!

Terry Carwile can’t help getting interrupted. Residents randomly drop by his table Thursday at J.W. Snack’s, chatting with him while he eats a pork sandwich and sips a cold iced tea. But, it’s not a problem for the Craig resident and city council member. He talks with every resident who comes his way. Carwile, 62, said he is often eager to visit with the people he represents. He believes community involvement and availability are some of the reasons why he was voted best town councilor in the Craig Daily Press’ 2010 Best of Moffat County contest. And, he appreciates the recognition. It has been a “privilege to serve the community and make it possible for people to enjoy the life I have for the last 35 years,” he said. Carwile was elected to the city council in 2005 and is serving in his second term. He was born in El Paso, Texas and was raised, for the most part, in Colorado. Local government, which Carwile contends is “in your face government,” suits his personality. He said he likes serving on the council because he gets to “see things happen right away.” “It is problem solving at the

basic level,” he said. Carwile said he’s happy to step up and take on tough issues the city faces, but he advocates more for the “basic stuff.” “I am somebody that really likes to see the basic services nailed down solid,” he said. “You know, like good, clean water, a good wastewater department and a good police department.” Carwile said he has always been a natural leader and serving on the city council allows him to express that part of his personality. “Maybe it’s genetics,” he said. “I have always gravitated toward leadership roles.” But, he said the city council isn’t always about leading. A lot of times, it’s about working as a team. He said the biggest pleasure he derives from the council is serving with like-minded people who want to see the best for the city they love.

Carwile said he tries to keep his “ear to the wind” to make sure the council is aware of state and federal issues. Recently, Carwile has taken a proactive role in tourism and economic development in Craig by suggesting the city implement a lodging tax to fund marketing and promotion of the area in hopes of boosting sagging city revenues. As a former coal miner who worked for Trapper Mining Company for 30 years, Carwile likes to stay involved in energy development issues and legislation as well. “I moved here during the first boom for energy when the power plant was being built and Trapper Mine was just opening up,” he said. “I lived through that boom and the subsequent bust and we have sort of gone through that cycle again.” Carwile hopes to use his experience and leadership to guide Craig through the current rough economic climate and energy development cycle. “I have some things to offer, some knowledge about how that all transcribed the last time, not that my memory is that great anymore,” he said with a laugh.
