‘A long time coming’ CNCC breaks ground on new facilities

About 330 area residents screened at Saturday’s 9News Health Fair

BY NICOLE INGLIS DAILY PRESS WRITER

For almost two decades, Colorado Northwestern Community College officials, board members, teachers and students waited. They waited with patience, and persisted on the state and community levels to meet an important need in Craig. On a windy Monday afternoon, CNCC, city, county and state officials turned out to celebrate a realized dream. Officials broke ground on two new CNCC campus buildings on a 38-acre parcel off Moffat County Road 7 west of Craig. Aurora-based contractor Adolfson & Peterson Construction will erect a 70,000-square-foot academic building and an 18,000-squarefoot career/technical building on the site in coming months. Gene Bilodeau, CNCC vice president of administration, said it was a “thrill” to see eight gold shovels hit the dirt where the new campus is scheduled to open in the fall of 2011. “It’s a really exciting feeling,” he said. “We’ve heard about it, we’ve talked about it and now we’re finally going to get to see it happen.” Just before the ceremony, Craig Mayor Don Jones expressed his gratitude for the work the State Board for Community Colleges and CNCC put in to moving the project forward. “This groundbreaking is a great step for the city of Craig,” he said. “It’s a great day and it’s been a long time coming.” Bilodeau said the city and Moffat County have been staunch supporters of the proj-

Josh Garfein’s hands worked diligently around Dan Martin’s collar. Garfein, 28, a first-year medical student at Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Parker, carefully examined and felt Martin’s skin, checking for anything abnormal. “Do you work a lot out in the sun?” Garfein asked. Martin, 68, a Lay buffalo rancher, chuckled slightly and admitted he enjoys working on his ranch without a shirt. “I just like the sun,” Martin said. “They say it’s bad for you, but they say drinking too much pop is bad for you, too.” Martin was one of about 330 people who attended the 9News Health Fair on Saturday morning at Sunset Elementary School in Craig. Kristi Shepherd, health fair site coordinator, said attendance was less than average for the annual event, which has been in Craig for about 33 years. At the fair, residents were able to receive a number of preventative health care checkups ranging from personal and mental health to nutrition and basic screenings, such as blood chemistry and count, vision, skin, pulse, blood pressure, prostate, colon and breast cancer. A senior blood draw, which was also part of the health fair and was hosted Thursday at Sunset Meadows II, tested 170 residents, which was slightly See HEALTH on page 7 INSIDE

Despite snowy and cold conditions, more than 40 people made the trek Saturday around Cedar Mountain for the first annual Brett Stearns Memorial Walk/Run. Stearns was a local Bureau of Land Management engine captain who died in June 2009 while in the line of duty. Brett Stearns Brett’s wife, Joy Stearns, said the memorial event helps fund the Brett Stearns Memorial Scholarship Fund. “All donations go towards the Brett Stearns Memorial Scholarship Fund,” she said. “That money is donated to students. (On Friday) we gave a $1,000 scholarship to a CNCC student in Craig.” Sarah Dill was the student who received the scholarship, Joy said. The trail, which is more than

Union vs. school-choice candidate

The people should decide

By NAT HENTOFF

To the editor: I am writing this letter as a former employee of The Memorial Hospital in Craig. Quorum Health Resources, which currently manages the hospital, has a contract for management services with the hospital that expires at the end of June. A decision has to be made by the hospital board whether to renew the contract or search elsewhere for another management company. I strongly think that the tax payers should have a say in how their beautiful new facility is managed, and I am a strong advocate that we need to search for a new company. I would be happy to share my experiences working at The Memorial Hospital to let people know what is going on. If any other taxpayers of this community agree that we need a change, please contact me. I can be reached at kwithamster@gmail.com, 824-5920, or by mail at 760 Barclay St., in Craig. Also, you can get information on the Internet about the management company, which is located in Tennessee, currently managing the hospital. It is very insightful. Thank you to the Craig Daily Press for allowing me to express my opinion on this issue.

What does success look like? I

n shaping the new education we’ll need to understand key concepts: how learning takes place, how to create a new way of assuring proficiency, KIDS how to stock TALK each student’s box of learning tools, how to allow for deep learning time on a daily and multi-year level, as well as how to Maren Schmidt appreciate the uniqueness of each person’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and risks to overall development. How do we measure success as we are juggling all these balls? Is it by the number of diplomas we hand out? Or is it perhaps measured by an assessment of how we’ve helped the whole person — mind, body, heart and spirit — be prepared to take on the challenge of living a life well lived? What do you really want for your children? Over the past 20 years, I have asked parents this question, based on a book by Dr. Wayne Dyer. The lists we develop correspond to Dyer’s. I want my children to: • Have the ability to enjoy life. • Value themselves. • Take risks. • Be self reliant. • Be free from stress and anxiety.

• Have peaceful lives. • Celebrate their present moments. • Experience a lifetime of wellness. • Be creative. • Fulfill their higher needs and feel a sense of purpose. A paradox of learning and human nature is that when we focus on developing these above-mentioned qualities, academic success follows. If we focus purely on academic success through test results and grades, these qualities may never appear. Instead we might see the opposite qualities in our children and ourselves: not enjoying life, a lack of self-worth, fear of change or rocking the boat, dependency-driven behaviors, anxiety filled lives, violence, discontent with the present, chronic illness, boredom and feeling disconnected with life. Perhaps we measure our educational system’s success by a decrease in the number of prison inmates, a decrease of children in our juvenile justice and foster care systems, and a decrease of the number of children taking attention and stress relieving drugs. Learning success requires love. To learn, you have to put the positive energy of life into everything you do. Not an optimum situation? Something you really don’t want to do? Put some love into it. When we meet with learning frustration, each of us has to answer this question honestly: Did I put some love into it? Anger is easy. Love is hard.

Successful people who meet the challenges of the real world have the ability to enjoy life, value themselves, be risk takers and self reliant, live free from stress and anxiety, have peaceful lives, celebrate their present moments, experience a lifetime of wellness, be creative, and fulfill their higher needs and to feel a sense of purpose. What does success look like? It looks like people of all ages who can answer in the affirmative, that yes, they do indeed possess these 10 qualities. Or at least eight. Our world needs people who are thinkers and problem solvers — leaders who will contribute to the progress of humanity at the individual level, the place where all learning occurs. Education is the only way to a peaceful world. All our systems — from education, government, finance, health, transportation, farming and more —depend on the individual to become the unique person who will live a life well lived. That is what success looks like. It’s what we really want for our children. Kids Talk TM deals with childhood development issues. Maren Schmidt founded a Montessori school and holds a Masters of Education from Loyola College in Maryland. She has over twenty-five years experience working with children and holds teaching credentials from the Association Montessori Internationale.

A May 18 Pennsylvania Democratic primary for governor could change the national debate on parental school choice. A singularly independent black candidate, state Sen. Anthony Williams, is focusing on giving parents the right to choose among charter schools, vouchers for private schools and those public schools that actuNat Hentoff ally work for all children. “Many inner city schools,” he says, “remain separate and not equal for African-American and other disadvantaged children.” He wants “the dollars to follow the child.” Williams is strongly opposed by the teachers union, the Pennsylvania State Education Association, as are nearly all school-choice candidates around the country, few of whom are black Democrats. Any of the pro-choice politicians would lose union financial support. “Many African-American elected leaders,” Williams said to me, “are not in step with people in their communities.” In Harlem, for example, as I told him, large numbers of black parents are competing for places in charter schools there that markedly outperform the local public schools. In addition to the teachers’ union, a fierce leading opponent of the charter schools is prominent black New York State Sen. Bill Perkins. He may lose his seat. What makes Anthony Williams even more singular is his unusually active and substantive record for the 8th Senatorial District, which spans small towns, suburban enclaves and communities in South, West and South-West Philadelphia. Since Philadelphia, like many cities, is plagued by violent gangs and corollary deaths, Williams works to get guns off the streets and is also involved in Neighborhoods United Against Drugs. Among his efforts to increase public participation in government that purportedly serves his constituents, he started the schoolyear internship program for high school and college students. These years, I rarely vote enthusiastically for anybody, but as I keep learning about this ceaseless proponent of real-life, real-time democracy (lower-case “d”) in action, I wish I were a resident of Pennsylvania so I could vote eagerly for Anthony Williams in the primary elections.

above average, Shepherd said. Many of the services were provided at a reduced price from a regular doctor’s fee, Shepherd said. Martin said he has attended the fair for about 15 years. It is the only major medical checkup he receives, he said. He said attending the fair is worth the drive from Lay because it is cheaper than what he would have to pay at a doctor’s office, he likes to keep and organize his own medical records and he understands the importance of preventative health care. “All these guys are just kind of flags,” Martin said referring to health fair volunteers. “They find something and say, ‘I don’t know what this is, maybe you should have this checked out.’ That is exactly what it is supposed to do.” Garfein was one of 13 volunteer students from Rocky Vista who staffed the fair. He said volunteering at the fair gave him more experience interacting with patients rather than simply attending class or practicing exams on standardized patients. “There is nothing like actually interacting with somebody

“All these guys are just kind of flags. They find something and say, ‘I don’t know what this is, maybe you should have this checked out.’ That is exactly what it is supposed to do.” Dan Martin Lay buffalo rancher and visitor to Saturday’s 9News Health Fair about the health volunteers and screenings at the annual fair. who is here,” Garfein said. “It may be their only time of the year to see a physician and may be the only time they get health care because they can’t afford it.” But, despite a day full of examining chapped hands, sunspots and moles, he said he was happy to help and have the opportunity to learn. “It is a great opportunity to see a distinct population that spends a lot of time outside, a lot of time working with their hands, or working with their bodies,” he said. Dr. Thomas Told, the dean of clinical medicine at Rocky Vista and a former longtime Moffat County physician, supervised the volunteer students.

Told said preventative care, like the testing done at the 9News Health Fair, is key to preventing diseases. Bodily indicators such as cholesterol numbers and blood pressure are “vital numbers” for health measurement and frequent monitoring of them can help with early health intervention, he said. Kara Soper, a medical technician at The Memorial Hospital in Craig, said she was happy to volunteer her time at the health fair. “It makes you feel good,” Soper said. “I think people are grateful that we are doing this.” Soper said the event was a welcome break from her usual routine. “I’m at home all the time with two little babies outside of work, but I get to get out and see other people in the community,” she said. Volunteers from the Craig Lions Club, Craig Rotary Club, Cedar Mountain Club, Moffat County Assessor’s Office and The Memorial Hospital helped staff and organize the event, and local resident Red Cortner donated bottles of water. Stronger economic reports send stocks soaring the concerns that have been dogging investors. Economic reports signaled that consumer spending and manufacturing are strengthening. Meanwhile, Germany’s approval of bailout funds for Greece and Buffett’s vote of confidence in Goldman, whose shares he owns, helped reassure investors. Goldman has been under fire the past two weeks after regulators filed civil charges accusing the bank of fraudu-

lent dealing in mortgage-backed securities. An agreement by United Airlines to acquire Continental Airlines in a stock deal worth about $3 billion also lifted stock prices. Investors see corporate dealmaking as a positive sign for the economy. “The merger in the airlines is great. As you begin to see mergers that means there is value out there,” said Anthony Conroy, managing director and

head trader for BNY ConvergEx Group. Traders funneled money to retail and restaurant stocks after the Commerce Department said that personal spending rose 0.6 percent in March, the biggest increase in five months. However, personal income rose just 0.3 percent. The reports were in line with analysts’ expectations but showed that consumers were pulling money from savings to make purchases.

Manufacturing continued to show broad improvement. Orders have been flowing to factories for months while companies rebuild depleted inventories. The Institute for Supply Management said that U.S. manufacturing activity expanded last month at the fastest pace in nearly six years. The trade group’s manufacturing index rose to 60.4 in April from 59.6 in March. Economists expected a reading of 60.

NEW YORK (AP) — Investors sent stocks soaring Monday after getting a boost of confidence from the latest economic reports and Warren Buffett’s defense of Goldman Sachs. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 143 points for its biggest gain in two and a half months. The Dow and broader indexes all climbed more than 1 percent. BRITTENY IVERS, A MOFFAT COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL JUNIOR, clears the high jump Monday during the Clint Wells Invitational at MCHS. Ivers placed third overall in the event.

MCHS track teams finish 1st at home By BEN BULKELEY DAILY PRESS WRITER

If Monday was the last time Aaron Nielsen would compete at home, the MCHS senior said it was a good way to end his high school career. Running and jumping Monday during the 2010 Clint Wells Invitational track and field meet at MCHS, Nielsen was able to snag ninth-place finishes in the long and high jumps, and a 10th-place finish in the 100-meter dash as both boys and girls teams were able to capture first-place finishes. But, the lone home track and field meet of the season was bittersweet for Nielsen, he said. “It’s kind of sad,” he said. “I don’t know if I’m going to play any sports after I graduate, so this was probably the last time I will ever compete at home.” For junior Maddy Jourgensen, the Clint Wells Invitational

was a perfect chance for her to tune up two weeks before the May 14 regional meet in Grand Junction. The long-distance runner captured first place in the 800meter run. In the mile, Jourgensen finished first followed closely by freshman Sassy Murray and Eryn Leonard, who finished second and third, respectively. “The long distance teams did really well,” she said. “We swept in the mile, and we were really close (to sweeping) in the 800.” After months of traveling to Grand Junction to compete, being at home was a nice change, Jourgensen said. “It’s nice because after the race is over, you just drive home,” she said. “You don’t have a two-hour bus ride ahead of you.” Jourgensen’s time of 5:29.10

was just off her season best of 5:20, but her 800-meter run time of 2:24.90 was almost a full second better than her personal best. With the end of the season looming, Jourgensen said she is eyeing the finish. “I’m a little nervous because the Tiger (Invitational) is this weekend (in Grand Junction),” she said. “After that, the season goes by really fast.” Lauren Roberts had a field day at home, so to speak. The junior set a personal best in the triple jump with a mark of 32’7.5” and claimed first in the long- and high-jumps. “I placed well in all of my events,” she said. “It’s always good to place first at home.” Ben Bulkeley can be reached at 875-1795 or bbulkeley@ craigdailypress.com.

wondering just how much house you can get for your money? find out now on

Dear Annie: I have only known my biological father for 14 years. Dad signed away his rights when I was young, but I reconnected with him at age 15. He claims he always wanted me, but I am now 28, and he has made no effort to be in my life. I was recently hospitalized for two weeks. Dad never once came or called, even though he knew I was there

and only lives a mile away. My foster dad, however, drove 100 miles to see me. Whenever I try to see my father, he never has time. He doesn’t bother to visit my home or my 9-yearold daughter. When his mother was terminally ill, I sat at her bedside for weeks, and he never once came to see her. I have decided to cut all ties because I am tired of being

hurt and having my every move criticized. I have gone through cancer without any emotional support from him. My husband is big on family and is pressuring me to have a closer relationship with my biological parents. I consider my foster parents my real parents. They have loved me no matter what. I think it’s healthier to eliminate my father from my life. Am

I wrong? — Abandoned Again Dear Abandoned: There is no right or wrong here. If you want to keep your father in your life, you must scale down your expectations. He is not capable of putting forth the effort required to maintain a close relationship. Either accept him a distant relative, or avoid him altogether.

Horoscope Old, lingering, negative conditions will finally fade from your life in the year ahead. You should now be able to make some of those significant changes you were fearful to initiate, which could enable you to produce many benefits for yourself. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) — You can do a friend an enormous favor today by influencing him/her in seeing all the positive things life has to offer, instead of dwelling only on the dark side of things. Do what you can. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) — Don’t be so quick to reject change that is foisted

upon you today. Once you get a chance to analyze what it has to offer, you might surprise yourself by how much you like it. CANCER (June 21-July 22) — Put forth your best effort with an arrangement that you have to make. Even if its benefits are hard to see and may even be slow in coming, it could turn out to be the best thing that you could do for yourself. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) — Be industrious today for profitable purposes. In other words, devote as much time and effort as you can to situations or jobs that have a bigger than usual rate of producing large

material rewards. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) — Your friends aren’t likely to mind you coming up with some unusual ideas of what to do socially, because collectively they’ll decide that what you suggest offers the best time for everybody. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) — Obstacles cluttering your path aren’t likely to intimidate you today. Actually, they’ll turn out to be challenging impediments that help heighten your resolve to be a big winner. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22) — One of your greatest assets is having the ability to recognize large opportunities that others may fail to see. Even when the rewards look sparse, you’ll know how to enhance them. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21) — Either today or in the very near future you will be receiving something that is long overdue in coming to you. Even if you don’t get it right now, it’ll be in the works.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) — Sometimes it is essential to disengage oneself from outside involvements in order to focus solely on a personal situation. Today might be one of those times for you. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — An associate who knows you are likely to be interested in a potentially beneficial commercial arrangement could come to you today about just such a deal. It might be exactly what you’ve been looking for. PISCES (Feb. 20-March 20) — Although you might be tempted to do otherwise, you know you must thrash out all of the pros and cons when it comes to making a major decision. Check to see what is being overlooked. ARIES (March 21-April 19) — Much can be accomplished today if you are prepared to work hard and do whatever has to be done. You’ve got what it takes to conquer even those jobs that are usually overwhelming.
