The Craig city lodging tax committee has decided how it wants the potential tax to be allocated, if approved by voters later this year. The volunteer lodging tax committee met Wednesday night to continue discussions surrounding council member Terry Carwile’s idea to implement a lodging tax within city limits. Committee members decided to break the proposed 6.9-percent lodging tax, a percentage reached at their first meeting, into four categories. The committee voted unanimously to allocate 3 percent of the 6.9 percent to fund marketing, promotions and event funding. Another 3 percent will fund capitol projects such as a visitor center and/or community center. The Craig/Moffat County Economical Development Partnership will receive .6 percent and .3 percent will be allocated to fund community beautification projects. Carwile originally proposed the idea of implementing the tax in Craig during the March 23 Craig City Council meeting. Carwile contends the result of added marketing and promotion will eventually boost other forms of tax revenue for the city and improve the local economy. Before being passed, the tax needs the approval of Craig voters in November. The volunteer committee was organized by the city council to draft details of a ballot question. The city council must approve the ballot question before it goes on the November ballot. Moffat County government currently implements a 1.9-percent lodging tax, which funds the Moffat County Tourism Association. See LODGING on page 7 INSIDE

Benefit to raise money for Morrison family By JACK WEINSTEIN FOR THE DAILY PRESS

Katresha Morrison says the Hayden community has rallied around her family since her son Logan’s diagnosis of Burkitt’s lymphoma in December. Now it’s Hayden Valley Elementary School’s turn. The elementary school staff is hosting a spaghetti dinner at 5 p.m. today in the school’s cafeteria. All proceeds will be given to the Morrison family to help pay for ongoing medical costs. “We really wanted to do something as a staff to help the Morrisons,” Principal Rhonda Sweetser said. “It’s one of those things where your heart goes out to the family when you hear about it. It’s a small thing the staff can do to help out.” After missing most of the second half of the school year, 6-year-old Logan returned to

school cancer-free in early April. Katresha Morrison said it’s a “big relief ” to have her son back in school, after his Dec. 5 diagnosis and subsequent treatment. His teacher, Melany Neton, said Logan didn’t miss a beat. “He’s just done incredibly well,” she said. “Academically, he’s kept up. Socially, the kids are excited to see him back. They were real concerned about him.” The spaghetti dinner, prepared by Hayden Food Service Director Steve Carlson, also will include salad, bread and cookies and brownies for dessert. The cost is $15 for families, or $5 for adults and $3 for children. Children 3 and younger will be admitted for free. For more information, call Hayden Valley Elementary School at 276-3756.

It’s another one of those weekends. I challenge you to make it to everything. Some of my favorite events of the year are this weekend. Let’s just see if I can make it everywhere I want to be: ■ Don’t miss the Grammywinning group Riders in the Sky tonight. The Craig Concert Association brings this group to Craig for its 2009-10 season finale at 7:30 p.m. at the Moffat County High School auditorium, 900 Finley Lane. We’ll be there and you can be, too. If you don’t have tickets, show up early. They’re sure to sell out. They’re $25 for adults, $10 for students or free with the purchase of a 2010-11 concert association membership. This level of event doesn’t happen often in Craig, so don’t miss it. ■ One of the most moving experiences I’ve had during my time in Craig is covering the Special Olympics Western Area Summer Games. Athletes from all over the Western Slope will compete in track, swimming and powerlifting events Saturday at Moffat County High School, 900 Finley Lane. Watch the opening ceremonies at 9 a.m. then stick around to watch the athletes compete. Trust me, it’s worth your time, and they so appreciate having cheerleaders. ■ Another favorite, mainly for the pure awe of it, is the Sombrero Ranches Horse Drive and Maybell Cultural Heritage Days. Stand on the side and watch as hundreds of horses pass by

LIVIN’ IT UP BY MICHELLE BALLECK

on Highway 40 in the heart of Maybell. It makes for great pictures and a fun family day. The Maybell Women’s Club is hosting a community potluck and pig roast and a dance starting at 6 p.m. Saturday. On Sunday, the horses pass through Maybell sometime between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., and there’s plenty of vendors and activities in the park to keep you occupied while you wait. Get all the event details at www.maybellwomensclub.com. ■ A National Day of Prayer rally takes place from noon to 1 p.m. today by the flagpole at the Moffat County Courthouse, 221 W. Victory Way. Everyone is welcome to join in. Call Myrt Stagner at 824-3355 or 629-0821 for details. ■ The Spring Mother’s Day Bazaar runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Centennial Mall, 1111 W. Victory Way. Check it out and get something nice for your mom, grandma and mother of your children. Don’t forget her on the holiday, which is Sunday, guys. Yes, this Sunday. ■ The Sports Page Bar at the Holiday Inn of Craig, 300 S. Colorado Highway. 13, hosts an Open Mic Night from 8 to 10 p.m. Friday, a May Day Party on Saturday featuring a complimentary taco bar and drink specials and free salsa dance lessons starting at 7 p.m. Sunday. ■ On Tuesday, there are two choices for live entertainment. E. Victory Way, offers a free performance by stand-up comedians Nancy Reed and Jeremy Whitman. The show starts at 9 p.m. and is open to anyone 21 and older. Serendipity Coffee Shop, 576 Yampa Ave., is hosting an Open Mic Night at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Go if you want to hear local musicians and poets, as well as fiddle and banjo bluegrass by two special guests, Marla and Teresa, of Homer, Alaska. For more info, call Bill Ronis at 620-6589. ■ West Theatre has something for men and women this weekend. The theater is showing “Iron Man 2,” totally for dudes, and “The Last Song,” a sappy love story. “The Last Song” looks kind of cheesy and I’m certainly not the world’s biggest Miley Cyrus fan, but it’s a movie based on a book by Nicholas Sparks. Try and keep me away. It’s a good balance of genres this weekend, so maybe you and your significant other could each see one and meet each other outside afterwards.

Let’s do reform right To the editor: School reform is happening in Colorado. Since 2008, educators been working on a massive overhaul of public education called CAP4K. Under this comprehensive program, Colorado has already defined college and workforce readiness, and developed and adopted new standards for what students should know and be able to do. School districts will now realign curriculum and make sure they are teaching to new standards. The next step is developing new assessments to measure student achievement of those standards. Unfortunately, state legislators just called a timeout on this systematic, research-based reform because there’s no money to fund it. CAP4K says the State Board of Education shall adopt a testing system by Dec. 15 — “or as soon thereafter as fiscally practicable.” Meanwhile, legislators are pushing through Senate Bill 191, an untested and unworkable reform measure. And because there’s no money to fund it, they’re planning to pay for it with “gifts, grants and donations.” Let’s focus our efforts — and our time and money — on the responsible reform already in progress. As funds become available, they should be applied to continuing the CAP4K work that follows a logical progress of reform. S. B. 191 is a diversion Colorado districts and students can’t afford. We urge all Colorado voters to contact our legislators, asking them to vote no on S.B. 191. Our legislators can be reached at: • Al.white.senate@state.co.us • Randy.baumgardner.house@ state.co.us Moffat County Education Association

GOP just can’t win on inclusiveness SYNDICATED COLUMNIST

Some kind of Godzilla phase? I

’ve got ants. They’re not in my pants, but God only knows what could happen if the kitchen infestation spreads to the laundry room. The ants are BOOMER swarming all GIRL over my counters, cabinets and drawers in what is best described as a horror movie in extreme miniature. Remember that song: “The ants go Cathy Hamilton marching one by one, hurrah, hurrah…”? Well, I’m here to tell you, that song is inaccurate. Ants do not travel alone. And they don’t march, either. Or, maybe they do and I don’t realize it because they’re so little, I can’t see their tiny militaristic treads. For all I know, they could be goose-stepping to some Third Reich Nazi war tune as they invade my pantry. The point is, the song’s wrong and should be stricken from play lists of preschool and kindergarten teachers across America. I have heard ants are running rampant all over town. This gives me absolutely no comfort because, in my book, “misery loves company” only pertains to insomnia, hard-todress apple body shapes and boomerang children. The fact that my neighbor is dealing with ants, too, leaves me no less grossed-out or sleepless. The little critters seem to be drawn to the sink — no doubt thirsty from all that goose-

stepping — and to the vinegar in my cupboards. I’ve always thought you could catch more ants with honey than you could with vinegar. But, apparently, that rule only applies to flies. Do you know how many godforsaken bottles of vinegar I have in my cupboards?! Balsamic. “Good” balsamic. White balsamic. Red wine. Pomegranate. Tarragon. Champagne. Apple cider. Elderberry. Blueberry basil. Habanero dill. Walla Walla Onion. Wildflower Honey. My husband has always poo-poo’ed hiring an exterminator. He’s a spray-it-yourself kind of guy, but will use chemicals only if personally threatened by bodily harm. Unfortunately, ants do not meet the criteria. That’s why I employ the wet dishcloth method of eradication. Simply wipe them away with one fell swoop. Bada bing, bada boom. Ants be gone! (Yes, PETA people. I am killing living, breathing animals by the score. But, hey! I don’t wear fur, I’ve never beaten a baby seal and I don’t eat meat from animals with four legs more than once a week. I still worship K.D. Lang and thought her “Hallelujah” killed at the Winter Olympics. So, please, no emails. As I dab and wipe, rinse, and dab again, I wonder whether this is karma coming around for my childhood when I had what psychologists might call an obsessive-compulsive ant hill disorder. I was never otherwise cruel to animals. I never kicked the dog or gave Bailey’s Irish

Cream to a cat (this actually happened; I won’t name names). But, for some reason, I couldn’t pass an ant hill in the backyard without destroying the entire colony with one crushing stomp of my navy blue Keds with rubber toe guards. Maybe it was some kind of Godzilla phase, who can say? Could the ancestors of those ants, innocently killed decades ago in Prairie Village, Kan., finally have found me 40 miles away? Are they exacting their revenge for the senseless violence that occurred, at my hands (er, feet) on 79th St. Terrace during the summers of 1960 through 1964? I wouldn’t put it past them. Ants are tenacious. And they never forget. This weekend, I may have to shore up my defenses and bring out the heavy artillery like, you know, soap and water. Admittedly, the wet dishcloth method isn’t really working. I may have gotten a little lax where kitchen housekeeping is concerned. With the remodel, those old cupboards will be out on the curb soon. Why bother to clean them now? That’s like bleaching your man’s hole-ridden tighty-whities before you pitch them in the trash. Am I right, ladies? What I need is some kind of Pied Piper. A PETA-friendly minstrel who could magically lure the ants from my kitchen, out the door and down the street into somebody else’s life. I wonder if K.D. Lang is available for hire. Because when she sings “Hallelujah,” I’d follow her anywhere.

On July 27, 2009, former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio swung by the D.C. offices of National Review (where I’m a contributing editor). He was there seeking support for his then-longshot candidacy for Mel Martinez’s U.S. Senate seat. That seat is currently held by George LeMieux, who was appointJonah Goldberg ed by Gov. Charlie Crist to keep it warm for himself. Rubio was relatively low on funds at the time, and Crist was still seen as a shoo-in by the political establishment. Rubio was pretty much exactly as you see him on TV. Fast-talking, confident, youthful, energetic and knowledgeable. We were all very impressed with him. Moreover, the general consensus inside the room was that the general consensus outside the room was wrong. In several recent elections, the base of the Republican Party has been asked to vote for fairly moderate candidates they didn’t particularly like. This year, we reasoned, Republicans surely would be again asked to pull the lever for moderates. Some were already foreseeable, like Rep. Mark Kirk in Illinois (vying for President Obama’s Senate seat) and Rep. Mike Castle (seeking Vice President Joe Biden’s Senate seat in Delaware). In other cases, it was likely that the base would be asked to either vote for a conservative loser or a moderate (potential) winner. There’s nothing wrong with such compromises. Even William F. Buckley insisted he was merely for the most conservative candidate electable. In politics, when you make the perfect the enemy of the good, you open the door to something even worse. Hence the appeal of Rubio. At the time, we concluded that the base of the GOP, both nationally and particularly in Florida, would be starving for an opportunity to support a principled conservative who could actually win in a general election. For years, Beltway conventional wisdom held that Republicans need to embrace Latinos, to become more youthful and more hip. So what’s the response to a 38-year-old Latino son of immigrants from Miami who quotes Snoop Dogg on his Twitter account and has successfully knocked a classically hackish older pol from his perch? Why, that this just shows how the GOP’s less inclusive than ever! It seems that no matter whom the GOP includes, it’s always the wrong kind of inclusiveness.

LODGING: Committee discussed tax rate, possible uses of revenue collected If Craig voters approve a city lodging tax, the county would not be able to collect its tax within city limits. The meeting began with committee chairman Dave DeRose asking committee members if the original 6.9-percent tax approved by the committee was what they wanted to move forward with. DeRose said he had heard some committee members were unhappy with the percentage

agreed upon. Tammie Thompson-Booker, regional director of sales for Candlewood Suites, said she felt the percentage was too high. Thompson-Booker said she might have to lower room rates to accommodate for business-oriented travelers who have a per day budget to spend. Committee members discussed whether customers of the lodging industry would notice the tax, and if that tax might drive customers to stay in other cities with

lower taxes. Jay Oxley said he felt the tax was a “one-time deal,” and the city would likely not be able to go back and raise the percentage. “We need to go for something that is fair but is not going to tip anybody (to other cities),” he said. “We need to get as much as we possibly can and then be very creative and trust worthy with how it is being spent. “This is something we need to look clear into the future with because it is going to be there a

long time.” Committee members then agreed on 3 percent of the 6.9 percent to be allocated for marketing, promotion and event funding, citing the MCTA board’s current budget. Members agreed that lowering the amount of money spent on marketing of the area would not fit with the goal of the tax. Among the biggest capitol project items discussed was a new visitor center. Frank Moe said he would like

Market in review brought to you by:

to see a larger visitor center with more multimedia and educational aspects than are currently offered. The decision to help fund EDP and community beautification through the tax fund was approved, 5-2, with several members abstaining. Some committee members felt the tax shouldn’t be used to pay for EDP or community beautification. The next committee meeting will be at 6 p.m. May 19 at Craig City Hall.

SHANDON HADLEY, RIGHT, PUTS THE SQUEEZE ON his opponent during an April 24 wrestling tournament in Parachute. Hadley, a sixth grader, led the Craig Bad Dogs with 65 victories this season.

Bad Dogs finish season in Rangely By BEN BULKELEY DAILY PRESS WRITER

A triple crown winner. A national title. More than 7,000 miles traveled to attend more than 22 tournaments. A .622 winning percentage. These are just some of the reasons the Craig Bad Dogs youth wrestling team had what coach Rodney Klimper called the team’s most successful season in its nine-year history. “This has been, by far, the best year for the Bad Dogs,” he said. “This year saw us take a team title at a national meet, and we finished third in Vegas.” Overall, the team won 1,236 matches against 751 losses, with 578 pins and 175 first-place finishes. Deven Mosman became the first Bad Dogs wrestler to win a triple crown, which is achieved by winning three Rocky Mountain National tournaments. On Jan. 23, the Bad Dogs took first place at the Richfield (Utah) Beehive Brawl, which was the first time the Bad Dogs had won a national event. But, the wins on the mat don’t stack up to how the kids are off the mat, Klimper said. “The biggest thing is, they are not just great wrestlers, but they are great kids,” he said. “At all the tournaments we go to, other coaches come up and tell us how well behaved our kids are.” The Bad Dogs’ season started in

October 2009, but even after six months on the mat, the wrestlers weren’t ready to quit, Klimper said. “They started to get tired near the end, but they never gave up,” he said. “They kept fighting.” Compared to other years, the Bad Dogs’ success came from a more team-oriented approach, Klimper said. “There was a larger focus on the team this year,” he said. “Kids volunteered to wrestle at different weights so they wouldn’t have to wrestle teammates. “As coaches, we couldn’t be prouder.” The team also had 12 wrestlers reach the 40-win plateau. Thomas Baker (50-9), Corbin Beck (41-6), Mikey Bingham (4916), Daniel Caddy (45-11), Shandon Hadley (65-12), Gregory Hixson (5511), Kaden Hixson (55-5), Mikinzie Klimper (62-9), Chris Moschetti (41-20), Mathew Moschetti (40-17), Luke Pleasant (41-9) and Dagan White (47-26) all reached the 40-win mark. This year also saw a number of older kids step into leadership roles, which bolstered the Bad Dogs, Klimper said. “This is the biggest core group we’ve had,” he said. “There were a lot of new kids who came in and did well and proceeded to fall in love with the sport.” Ben Bulkeley can be reached at 875-1795 or bbulkeley@craigdailypress.com.

Jordan Williams, a 2008 Hayden High School graduate and former member of the Moffat County High School varsity baseball team, was recently named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference’s Co-Rookie of the Year. Williams, who red-shirted Jordan Williams as a freshman, played catcher as a sophomore this season for the Colorado School of Mines. He shares the rookie award with Nebraska-Kearney’s catcher, Chandler Klute. In 2010, Williams hit .329 with 14 RBI while composing a .979 fielding percentage and gunning down eight of 30 (27 percent) would-be base stealers. The Orediggers (12-27 overall, 7-25 in the RMAC) have finished their season.

Tebow jersey tops sales list NEW YORK (AP) — Tim Tebow already leads the NFL in one category: jersey sales. His Denver Broncos No. 15 was by far the most popular on the NFL’s website for April. His celebrity clearly trumps the debate over whether he’ll ever make it as an NFL quarterback after winning the Heisman Trophy and two national championships at Florida. Tebow is, at best, third on Denver’s depth chart at QB. But the 25th pick of the first round still had the best-selling rookie jersey since the NFL started keeping track in 2006. The Broncos were tops in the league in merchandise sales on NFLShop.com in April after ranking 10th for the year ending March 31. The draft’s top pick, the St. Louis Rams’ Sam Bradford, was at No. 9, behind not just Tebow but the second selection, defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. The new Detroit Lion, who ranked eighth, is the only lineman in the top 25.

sions when Justine has said derogatory things to me in front of others. I am so taken by surprise that I never have a good comeback. I don’t want to cause any family turmoil, but would like to be treated with some respect. How do I do that without causing hard feelings? — Left Out Dear Left Out: Justine is accustomed to bossing her baby sister around. Talk to her, as well as to your other sisters, and explain the vacation problem. Ask if they could please give you more options when selecting a date because you would love to go. And when Justine insults you, call her on it. You don’t have to be clever. Practice the phrase, “Why would you say such a hurtful thing?” and repeat as needed. Dear Annie: My stepdaughter, “Hannah,” is getting married soon. The problem is, her mother is pushing Hannah to let her stepfather walk her halfway down the aisle. Her father will then walk her from there to the altar. My husband is devastated that when people turn around to see the bride, they will see her with the stepfather first. What are the guidelines for such a situation? My heart breaks to see my husband try to deal with this without sharing his thoughts with Hannah. — Sad on a Happy Day Dear Sad: It is not uncommon for stepfathers to walk the bride partway down the aisle. It is how a bride can

show gratitude to someone who helped raise her. And Dad still gets to take Hannah to the altar. Mom, however, should not be pressuring Hannah one way or the other, and neither should Dad. Brides are under enough stress. Support your husband by helping him accept Hannah’s decision, whatever it is, and by assuring him that it does not detract from his importance in his daughter’s life. We hope Hannah will tell him this, as well. Dear Annie: I read the responses to “Still the Mom,” but I guess I’m in the minority. I wish I had never met my biological mother. She was quite pretty but terribly vain, and believed a woman was defined by how many men she could attract. She was a gossip and a troublemaker with a sordid past, which took years for me to detach from my own identity. Despite it all, I tried to have a friendship with her, but she wasn’t interested. I was rejected all over again. Worse, I was 18 when I found her, and my adopted mother blew a gasket. She thought I didn’t love her and made my life miserable. — Not Always Greener Dear Greener: Doing a search for a birth parent is always a risk because not every situation works out as anticipated. What is truly sad, however, is your adopted mother’s inability to be supportive when you needed her. We hope things are better now.

Only you, the patient, knows who's best. It's YOUR choice!

Dear Annie: My sister “Justine” has invited me to go on vacation with her three times. The problem is, she consults with my other two sisters and their ANNIE’S husbands to MAILBOX come up with the date and place without any input from me. She just phones with the information and expects an immediate reply. Given the short notice, my husband and I have not been able to go. Kathy and Marcy I don’t understand why Justine can’t give me a little more choice in the matter. Last time, she called on my cell phone and expected a “yes” or “no” answer while I was in the car. She had airline information up on her computer screen and was ready to book the flight. Annie, I have seven grandchildren that I help take care of. I needed to consult with my daughters and check my calendar at home. I feel like an afterthought. Or maybe she doesn’t want me to go and is hoping that the short notice and lack of options will make me decline. I am the youngest of four sisters. We also have three brothers, who are never asked to go. Sometimes I think that might be less hurtful. There have been other occa-

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) — Strong urges to get things done and out of the way will overtake any thoughts of playing. Now is the time to take on those projects that previously had appeared too difficult to tackle. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) — Projects that call for using the full scope of your talents will be the type of tasks you’ll truly relish working on. The more creative you can be, the better you’ll like it. CANCER (June 21-July 22) — In some instances, your instincts could be more dependable than your logic. In order to differentiate between the two, follow what your intuition is telling you. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) — Someone who is close to you may need a lot of tender treatment in order to be appeased, so don’t try to reach this person through practicality. Instead appeal to his/her emotions. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) —

Because of the pride you’ll take in performing a task for another today, no supervision will be needed to keep your mind on the job. The results will provide all the evidence. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) — Being in love with love has its place, but you may need to know when and how to keep your emotions under control today. If you don’t, you could drive everybody else crazy. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22) — Even though you’re likely to have lots of interesting things to do today, you might have to consider giving family affairs more attention than you intended. Know when to make that choice. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21) — Communication with someone in particular might become more important than usual, with either you trying to contact this person or s/he eagerly trying to get in touch with you. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan.

19) — You’ve always had a good eye for a bargain, and today your vision will be especially keen. This could be an extremely good day to go shopping for some expensive items on your list. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — It might be more important than usual to do what you want to do and when you want to do it. In order to satisfy these urges, it’s best if you could find a way to become a loner. PISCES (Feb. 20-March 20) — To your credit, you’ve always been responsive to those who need your help, which is good, because today you may be called upon to make a big sacrifice for a good friend in need. ARIES (March 21-April 19) — Treating everyone in a friendly manner makes you an enjoyable person to be around today. In fact, by doing so it encourages the world to actually see you as a close pal.
