Soak up the ’Boat
There’s a reason this place is called Steamboat Springs. And you haven’t truly experienced it until you’ve soaked your aching bones in the area’s natural, hot spring-fed pools. Old Town Hot Springs at Third Street and Lincoln Avenue (see directory listing on page 55) provides the most convenient option, plus it boasts a pair of 230foot waterslides for the munchkins. But if you have the time, the seven-mile trip to Strawberry Park Hot Springs (see directory listing on page 55) north of town is well worth it. Experience the healing powers of the hot springs as the Utes once did — under the bright stars of a Yampa Valley evening.
Live like a local There are certain events that even locals can’t pass up, no matter how long they’ve lived here. Cross your fingers and hope your vacation coincides with one of them: ■ U.S. Olympic trials: Freestyle and Nordic combined Olympic team dreams will be realized Dec. 23 and 24 right here in Steamboat Springs. ■ New Year’s fireworks and torchlight parade: Beginning at 7 p.m. Dec. 31 at the base of the ski area. ■ 97th annual Winter Carnival: A wonderfully unique Steamboat celebration of winter; this year’s is Feb. 3 to 7.
Stroll downtown Steamboat’s historic shopping district combines the nostalgia of old-time storefronts with the allure of boutique shops and galleries. Take the free city bus to Fifth Street and begin your journey by passing the historic Routt County Courthouse before entering the heart of the downtown area. Plenty of restaurants, bars and shops await you. 8 | Explore Steamboat winter 2009-10
■ 36th annual Cowboy Downhill: Coinciding with the National Western Stock Show in Denver, watch real cowboys make a mess out of skiing and snowboarding. Jan. 19 at the base of the ski area. ■ Cardboard Classic: An end-ofseason tradition, locals build cardboard crafts and race them down a plowed course at the ski area. This year’s 30th annual rendition is April 10.
Après ski We can all agree that nothing puts an exclamation point on a brilliant day of skiing or riding like slopeside drinks and appetizers. Start your afternoon at Slopeside Grill, which shouldn’t be hard to find with its outdoor seating just off the RightO-Way trail at the base of the ski area. Other convenient options include Bear River Bar and Grill in Gondola Square, which has a deck overlooking the base of the ski area. Live music is an afternoon staple. exploresteamboat.com
Load up on calories … Like any ski town worth its weight in snow, Steamboat offers too many lip-smacking breakfast establishments to count. Creekside Café, Winona’s, Freshies and The Shack Café are four of the best. Get your fill before you spend a day on the slopes.
… and then work them off You came here to ski, now get to it. But to make the most out of your days on the mountain, you’ll have to leave behind Photo by Larry Pierce those ’90s-era skis. All of Steamboat’s full-service retail and rental shops offer the best in modern ski and snowboard equipment. Demo a pair of new skis for a day, and then spend the rest of your trip convincing your significant other why some new sticks are a good investment. You’ll love the personalized attention at Ski Haus (see directory listing on page 58).
Get pampered Northwest Colorado’s dry air can wreak havoc on your skin, just like a day on the slopes can wear out your muscles. Lucky for you, Steamboat’s got the salons, day spas and massage studios to cater to your every whim.
Look back Step out of your comfort zone Nothing speaks to the quality of a trip quite like doing something you won’t — or can’t — do just about anywhere else. Create a lasting memory through Rocky Mountain activities like leading your own sled-dog team, taking the family for a sleighride dinner, or embarking on a full-moon snowshoe tour. For the more adventurous, tag along on an ice-climbing adventure up frozen Fish Creek Falls. See the Activities Directory beginning on page 52 for more ideas.
Eat some more You deserve to eat well while on vacation, and those après ski appetizers won’t hold you over till morning. Satisfy your stomach with some real Colorado fare, like elk tenderloin and fresh caught trout. The best multi-course meals can be had at Café Diva, The Cabin and bistro c.v. exploresteamboat.com
Revel in downtown Steamboat’s historic past. The Tread of Pioneers Museum (northwest corner of Eighth and Oak streets) will have you feeling like a fourthgeneration local. You just might impress your ski instructor or your new friends at the bar with your knowledge of local history. See the museum’s directory listing on page 56 for more information.

SKIING RIDING and
Explore Steamboat Magazine
From its humble beginnings at the hard-working hands of a small group of dedicated ranchers, the Steamboat Ski Area has always stood out among its Rocky Mountain peers. Accentuated by its legendary tree skiing and trademark champagne powder, the slopes of Mount Werner offer a skiing and snowboarding experience on par with just about any ski area in the world. Then consider that snowfall totals have surpassed 400 inches during three of the past four winters, and you’ll be pleased you booked your vacation in Steamboat Springs. The record-setting winter of 2007-08 dumped 489 inches of snow on Mount Werner, including three consecutive months of 100-plus inches of snow (December, January and February). Rest assured, locals won’t soon forget the 58 powder days of 4-plus inches of snow. At a lot of resorts, fresh snow is quickly “tracked out” by eager skiers and riders. That inevitable process is delayed at the Steamboat Ski Area, thanks to its 2,965 skiable acres — making it one of the largest ski areas in Colorado. Mount Werner has 3,668 feet of vertical gain and 165 named trails. Fourteen percent are for beginners, 42 percent are for intermediate skiers and riders and 44 percent are for all you advanced riders. Skiers and riders who like spending time launching off kickers and hitting rails won’t
be disappointed with the terrain park, highlighted by Mavericks Superpipe — a 500-foot-long halfpipe with 18-foot walls and 22-foot transitions. The nearly 12-acre terrain park offers features for skiers and riders of all abilities and ages. Excited? Just make sure you get to the mountain early to maximize your day. The ski area’s lifts open between 8:30 and 9 a.m., with the gondola taking its first passengers at 8:30 a.m. Most lifts stop service at 3:30 p.m. The ski area has made strides to increase uphill capacity in recent years, most notably with the addition of the Christie Peak Express and Sunshine Express chairlifts. Return visitors might notice the redesign of the beginner trails on Headwall, a change made two years ago to make the mountain’s lower slopes friendlier and more organized for new skiers and riders. The change pairs well with Steamboat’s award-winning Ski and Snowboard School, which includes six Olympian instructors.

The Kids’ Vacation Center has a variety of programs for kids of all ages and is one reason Steamboat was named the No. 1 Family Resort in the West for the seventh straight year by SKI magazine. And the KVC, as the childcare center is affectionally referred to, got a facelift this summer and a new main entrance looking out to the Headwall trail. On-mountain facilities include Thunderhead, Rendezvous Saddle and the Four Points Hut. Each offers a variety of food and beverages. Fine dining can be found at Hazie’s and Ragnar’s. Food and drink aside, there’s no better way to end a day on the slopes than with quality live music and a pitcher of beer. The ski area hosts the Bud Light Rocks the ’Boat concert series, as well as the Steamboat MusicFest and Ski Jam. Other special events take place at the base area throughout the ski season. Full speed ahead!
NW Colorado offers premiere snowmobile terrain Explore Steamboat Magazine
There’s nothing quite like the feeling of carving up an open meadow of soft Rocky Mountain powder — sinking knee deep into the fluff, leaning back and punching the throttle. That’s right, punching the throttle. The Champagne Powder and aspen skiing on the slopes of Mount Werner have made Steamboat Springs a world-class ski destination. Combine that high-quality snow with the vast quantities of accessible public lands surrounding Steamboat, and it’s no wonder Northwest Colorado is one of the premiere snowmobile destinations in the country. There’s something here for all abilities of rider — from the pure novice to the advanced and extreme rider. The former should begin their foray into snowmobil-

ing with a guided tour from one of numerous local guide operators. Companies like Steamboat Snowmobile Tours, High Mountain Tours and Saddleback Ranch offer safe, guided trips for families and groups. Expert riders with their own sleds can venture out on their own, exploring snowmobile-accessible areas near Rabbit Ears Pass to the east and Buffalo Pass and Steamboat Lake to the north. Riders will likely encounter some of the hundreds of miles of groomed trails maintained by three local snowmobile clubs — Routt Powder Riders, Steamboat Lake Snow Club and Northwest Colorado Snowmobile Club. Whatever you do, be mindful of the clearly marked motorized, nonmotorized and multiuse areas.
Go for a ride. ■ Maps of the trail systems, highlighting critical elk and deer winter range and motorized and nonmotorized boundaries, are available at the Forest Service district office at 925 Weiss Drive in Steamboat (970-870-2299) and at the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association visitor’s center at 1255 S. Lincoln Ave. ■ Season pass permits for the Buffalo Pass Backcountry Winter Recreation Area also are available at the Forest Service office. There is no fee to use the area, or for the permits, but each user is required to obtain one at the Dry Lake Campground trailhead or at the office. ■ Off-highway vehicles operating on any public lands or trails in Colorado, including snowmobiles, must be registered or permitted for Colorado use by Colorado State Parks. Out-ofstate residents must purchase a $25 Colorado Non-Resident OHV permit. View www.staythetrail.org for more details, as well as trail resources, maps and links to the Colorado State Parks registration Web site.

And for most folks, it can be done for a fraction of the cost of a day on the slopes. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are energizing activities available to anyone with a little sense of adventure. The valley is home to five diverse Nordic touring areas, not including the marked trails on Rabbit Ears Pass. Nordic centers in the valley stretch from Catamount Ranch in the south to Vista Verde Guest Ranch and Steamboat Lake State Park in the north. Of course, there’s excellent skiing right in town, including the Steamboat Ski Touring Center, with expertly groomed trails and daily lessons at Rollingstone Ranch Golf Course on Clubhouse Drive. The trails crisscross Fish Creek, where snow pillows dot the streambed. There are good beginner options on the trails at Howelsen Hill, but experts also will be

challenged by the hilly routes that have hosted international competitions. Resident aerobic warriors pound the trails on Emerald Mountain behind Howelsen. If the touring centers don’t offer adequate adventure, well-equipped and experienced skiers will find nine cross-country and snowshoe trails on Rabbit Ears Pass in the Routt National Forest ranging from 1.6 to 7 miles. The trails are marked by blue diamond emblems that are nailed to posts and trees along the routes. Informal maps can be picked up at the Hahn’s Peak Ranger District in the large building on east U.S. Highway 40, roughly across from the Holiday Inn. Skiers on Rabbit Ears Pass should carry backpacks with topographic maps and a compass, emergency supplies and extra clothing. Visitors from lower elevations may have to make adjustments in their itineraries to account for elevations above 9,000 feet on Rabbit Ears. Snowshoeing options abound, too. Whether it’s a walk at Steamboat Lake State Park or a run on Rabbit Ears Pass, snowshoeing is an activity for all ages and fitness levels. Many
snowshoers, particularly those unfamiliar with the backcountry and the area, prefer to stay near well-marked and groomed trails. Snowshoers are reminded to stay to the sides of groomed Nordic trails used for cross-country skiing. All that’s required to snowshoe are a pair of semi-waterproof hiking boots, warm socks, winter clothing and a pair of snowshoes. It also might be wise to bring a camera. Snowshoes are available to buy and rent from almost every outdoor sporting goods store in Steamboat Springs.

Take a seat Vacation or not, sometimes there’s nothing better than sinking into a comfy chair and letting the entertainment come to you. Steamboat has two movie theaters playing new releases, including the six-screen Metropolitan Wildhorse Stadium Cinemas in Wildhorse Marketplace (just a short drive down Mount Werner Road from the ski area base). Downtown offers the Carmike Chief Plaza 4 Theater. Use your mobile phone or computer to log on to ExploreSteamboat. com for this week’s movie times and listings. The $11 million expansion has produced a beautiful and state-of-the-art library facility.
Just add water You don’t want your day away from the slopes to leave you cramped and sore. Loosen up those legs by heading to Howelsen Ice Arena downtown for a public skate session with the family. Call 970-879-0341 for public skate times and more information. Whatever you do, don’t you dare let

Why not bag an 18-inch rainbow trout to complement your 18-inch powder day on the ski mountain? There’s a reason winter fishing continues to attract more and more anglers to Northwest Colorado each year, and it’s as simple as a fact of nature: Fish don’t stop eating just because it’s cold outside. The challenge for anglers is finding open water, and the Yampa River’s tailwaters beneath the Stagecoach Reservoir dam about 25 minutes southeast of Steamboat Springs is a great place to start. It’ll take cross-country skis or snowshoes to get you access, but the decreased wintertime fishing pressure is worth the extra effort. If it just sounds like too much work on your vacation, Steamboat Springs boasts several top-notch fishing guides and outfitters, several of whom will be happy to provide snowmobile access to some of the area’s best winter angling destinations. Steamboat Flyfisher, Straightline Sports and Bucking Rainbow Outfitters are good places to start regardless of your Steamboat fishing aspirations. The Shack— The breakfast hot spot
When most of
Steamboat is still asleep at 6 a.m., the kitchen is bustling and the counter is full of regulars at The Shack Café. The breakfast hot spot is usually full of workers having their morning coffee and locals scanning the headlines, perched on green bar stools in the rustic, wood-paneled restaurant on Lincoln Avenue. Some local devotees have been known to visit The Shack for one and sometimes two meals a day, and seasonal residents will want to put a visit to the café on their to-do lists.
“We have people saying ‘We had to go to The Shack before we left town,”’ said Merdy Davies, who has been serving pancakes and avocado burgers at The Shack for more than 20 years. The Shack has been feeding hungry locals and tourists downtown since 1969. Current owners Jay and Marci Baverstock bought the then-Waffle Shack in 1978 after leaving jobs in California to live and raise their family in Steamboat Springs. The carefully crafted menu includes the classic bacon and eggs, homemade hash brown potatoes and grilled sourdough toast freshly cooked to order. Other signature dishes include Mac’s Omelete, made with diced sausage, chilies, jack cheese and salsa.
Popular breakfast favorites include the spicy huevos, The Shack’s kicked-up version of huevos rancheros, and the Jay’s choice, a traditional breakfast platter of bacon, eggs, pancakes and hash browns. Most entrées are less than $9. Although The Shack is best known for serving breakfast all day, the kitchen also offers lunch dishes beginning at 11 a.m. The lunch menu includes an extensive sandwich board, with offerings such as the standard club sandwich or French dip, served with onion rings, French fries, baked beans, coleslaw or cottage cheese. Diners also can choose entrée salads or Marci’s long-standing favorite — the best cheeseburger ever built. Although The Shack mainly caters to the “meat and potatoes”
crowd, a number of vegetarian options have been added to the menu in recent years. At breakfast, vegetarians have a variety of omelets and griddle dishes to choose from, including waffles, pancakes and French toast dishes. At lunchtime, vegetarians can choose between the veggie burger, grilled cheese sandwich and the grilled vegetable sandwich with tomatoes, onions, bell peppers, mushrooms, avocado and cheese on whole wheat bread. Customers can expect friendly and attentive service from the staff, many of whom have been there for years and greet regulars by their first names. “People know they’ll find a familiar face here,” Merdy said.

Double Z Bar and Bar-B-Q— A friendly place to eat and drink
The Double Z Bar and Bar-B-Q is an organic high-
country collision of cowboys and ski bums who found common ground over beers at the bar. Head downtown to the evening’s real event: a beer and barbecue throwdown at the Double Z Bar and Bar-B-Q. Double Z — winner of the “Best of the ’Boat” for burgers, fries and barbecue — is a small but friendly bar with patios in the front and back. The lively bar and grill quickly fills to capacity most
nights. The crowd is eclectic— a talkative, welcoming, mostly local mishmash of extremesports enthusiasts tugging at eyebrow rings, ruddy-cheeked Shaun Whites wrestling with undisciplined locks, rumpled plaid-clad fishermen fresh out of the creek, rodeo chasers in sharp-creased jeans, and polarfleeced tourist families of four, dizzily ravenous after a taxing day of high-country recreation. You’ll find them all at “The Z.”
If you have a love of barbecue and are not afraid to get your fingers dirty, this is the place for you! Barbecue is nothing without its sauce, and Double Z’s is made on site. The sauce is balanced and sassy, a tangy-silky glaze that is at once bold and delicate with confident layers of tomato, garlic, smoke and sagey ranchland air. Try the sauce on a rack of ribs, pork or beef. The meat is slow smoked to perfection, not burnt but smoked, and not fatty but meaty. Go ahead and gnaw; you won’t feel
inhibited here licking your fingers. Ask for baked beans and crunchy coleslaw on the side. Servers at the Double Z are as casual as the place itself. There is no formality here, so relax and enjoy. If you’d like to see for yourself what Steamboat is really like, stop in. If you’re in the mood to stay in, pick up the phone because Double Z delivers for lunch and dinner. And if you just can’t get enough, you can also buy a tub of Z sauce to go.

Riggio’s Ristorante— Traditional Italian cuisine
All New Pizza Menu
✵Exceptional Italian fare ✵Great wine ✵Relaxed atmosphere There is something unique about traditional Italian cuisine that separates it from the culinary styles of other countries and regions of the world.
For Rich Most, owner and executive chef of Riggio’s Ristorante, passion is the defining characteristic of the Italian people and their food. That passion for family and friends, great wine and perfectly prepared meals has made Riggio’s a Steamboat favorite.
Welcome to Riggio’s, an escape to authentic Italy. Located on the west end of downtown Steamboat Springs, Riggio’s is a local’s favorite and award-winning restaurant that blends the culinary styles of Northern and Southern Italy with a creative revision of classic Italian dishes. Perfect for a romantic dinner for two or a traditional family meal of homemade spaghetti and meatballs, Riggio’s offers up something for everyone.
Riggio’s is an establishment run by a family held together by wife Stacy Most. Family is at the center of Italian culture, and owners Richard and Stacy Most carry this philosophy throughout the restaurant between staff and guests.
That success begins in the kitchen, where Most and his professional staff use only the freshest ingredients. Riggio’s offers a blend of culinary styles from Northern and Southern Italy, as well as creative revisions on classic Italian recipes that create signature mouth-watering dishes. The aromas of sautéed garlic and fresh lemons, rosemary and sage float from the kitchen into the main dining room, invoking thoughts of the Mediterranean that are brought to life in this newly renovated warm Tuscan atmosphere.
“Consistency is one of the most important aspects of success for any restaurant, and that’s something Riggio’s has accomplished for 20 years,” Rich Most said.
Large, full-color Jim Steinberg landscape photographs of oldworld Italy and the rugged Rocky Mountains of Colorado adorn the restaurant’s warm walls.
A large upstairs seating area is ideal for private parties, large gatherings and other special occasions. Riggio’s menu has been carefully crafted with years of tinkering and adjusting dishes until a perfect balance is found. Many of these dishes have become local favorites. Riggio’s offers nightly specials and Chef Most likes to get creative and incorporate fresh ingredients such as seafood risotto with truffle oil and taleggio cheese or Colorado lamb topped with an arugula hazelnut pesto. The restaurant’s carefully selected wine list is constantly revised to offer patrons top selections from around the world

experienced, professional staff is a key to the restaurant’s success Most said. Riggio’s is fortunate to have one of the best staffs in Steamboat. The customers will recognize the staff year after year, which really reflects the family feeling the restaurant promotes. And family is how all patrons are treated in this superb Italian restaurant. In fact, don’t be surprised if Lida Most, the owners’ 7-year-old daughter, visits your table to ask about your meal and your dining experience at her parents’ restaurant. Tap House— Where everybody knows your name
Tap House sports grill — in the heart of downtown Steamboat Springs between Seventh and Eighth streets — offers the best of both worlds.
With more than 50 HD TVs and full satellite capability, The Tap House provides sports programming that rivals any bigcity sports bar. And although it features a large dining room and bar, The Tap House retains the small-town charm and comfort unique to Steamboat. The spacious dining room is a favorite spot for locals and tourists.
The bar often has been referred to as the Cheers of Steamboat — “the place where everybody knows your name.” The analogy always puts a smile on the faces of local owners Gary Saxe and Melissa Baker. “What really keeps our customers coming back is our quality food at very affordable prices,” Baker said. The owners understand the need for a place where the entire family can enjoy a meal in a laidback atmosphere. The Tap House offers all the traditional sports grill food — burgers and fries, battered chicken fingers, onion rings and heaping piles of nachos.
But the restaurant is equally proud of its authentic Mexican entrées such as the burritos, fajitas and tacos. The Tap House expanded its Mexican menu this year to include chimichangas and fish tacos. And, of course, there are the buffalo wings. Often regarded as the home of the best wings in town, The Tap House offers seven varieties of wings: mild, medium, hot, hot barbecue, barbecue, spicy garlic and the ever-popular oriental barbecue — which uses local legend Dean Martin’s sauce. The other sauces are made locally by Wing-Time. Tuesday is Wing Day at The Tap House, when 33-cent wings
are offered from 11:30 a.m. to midnight. Wing Day is so popular that owners track sales by weight, usually selling 2 to 3 tons of wings a month. “Not only is Wing Night a great deal, but it has become a weekly social event,” Saxe said. If your appetite demands more than wings after a long day of enjoying the Yampa Valley, The Tap House has appealing entrée choices as well. Take your pick from ribs, a half chicken, a tuna dinner, an 8-ounce sirloin steak, a 12-ounce New York Strip or a 16-ounce rib eye. All are served with your choice of soup or salad, French fries, mashed potatoes and gravy or rice for $9.95 to $19.95.

Saxe and Baker are avid supporters of local and Colorado sports teams and events. And unlike big-city hot spots, The Tap House owns an impressive collection of winter sports memorabilia commemorating and honoring the hundreds of Olympians — past and present — who have competed or lived in Ski Town USA. Plus, the 50 HD TVs ensure there is not a bad sports-viewing seat in the house. You won’t miss any of your home team’s games while you are on vacation! “Our philosophy is to be able to get any sports available by cable, Direct TV or satellite,

including high-definition sports,” Saxe said. The restaurant and bar area also features the popular NTN Network, a national sports, trivia and poker interactive game. There’s no cost to play. While waiting for your meal to arrive or for others to finish, children and adults can entertain themselves with the restaurant’s arcade games. The bar area also boasts a Foosball table and internet jukebox. As its name suggests, The Tap House proudly offers more beers on tap — 21 — than any other restaurant in town. Domestics, imports and microbrews are available at a reasonable price.

What is Contemporary Rocky Mountain Cuisine? You can find out at bistro c.v., where they serve fresh, local food and carefully selected wine in a trendy, yet casual atmosphere. Although they update their menu regularly, staples include the Chicken & Chorizo Pot Pie and Ingrid’s Mussels. Both are favorites among locals, and it is no wonder why. The pot pie is as delicious to eat as its presentation is beautiful to see, brimming with homemade chorizo and roasted chicken in a cast-iron dish and topped with a

savory corn crust. The Bouchot mussels are flown in directly from Maine and, like all the bistro’s seafood, are “caught to order” – served less than 24 hours after catching. Bistro c.v.’s other meats — beef, pork, lamb — all come from local Routt County ranches. The focus at the bistro is on local, organic and sustainable products, and you will taste the freshness in all the menu items. The wine list is created with the same principles. Owners
Kevin Caparrelli and Brian Vaughn carefully select their wines from small, boutique vineyards that focus on sustainability. Your friendly server will be happy to pick a wine to complement your entrée. If you would like a truly unique dining experience, then be sure to stop by bistro c.v. With its moderately priced, fresh and innovative menu, excellent wine list, and friendly service, bistro c.v. will certainly become your next “must-do” in Steamboat.
