Welcome to Craig message from the mayor
Welcome to Craig, Colorado! Craig has an approximate population of 9,000 and is located two hours from Interstate 80 north and one-anda-half hours from Interstate 70 south. Our local economy is driven by energy, agriculture, tourism and recreation. Craig is the county seat for Moffat County, the second largest county in the state of Colorado in land mass. We have almost 3 million acres of land or just less than 4,800 square miles made up of 40 percent private and 60 percent federal lands. Moffat County is the Elk Hunting Capital of the World with the second-largest elk herd in the entire United States. Moffat County is also home to one of the largest wild horse populations in Northwest Colorado as well and the largest Greater Sage Grouse populations in the United States. If you like the outdoors with abundant recreational opportunities or you are looking to start up a new business adventure, then Craig is the place to be! Craig is the mega-center for outdoor activities, and I would like to encourage you to consider visiting our one of our annual events. The kick-off to summer starts with our annual Grand Olde West Days over the Memorial Day weekend. Following that is our Whittle the Wood carving contest in June. On the Fourth of July, we have the Veterans of Foreign Wars parade and a barbecue in Veterans Memorial Park. County Balloon Festival at Loudy-Simpson Park down by the Yampa River. The annual Moffat County Fair in August is an event you won’t want to miss either. We have more open space in this county than most and are blessed with blue skies and clean air.
We are a city and county that is supported by the coal industry, which includes four coal mines between Routt County and Rio Blanco County — both are within 100 miles of each other. Craig is home to one of the few airports in the state of Colorado that parallels a beautiful 18-hole golf course and restaurant alongside the Yampa River. Bald eagles can be seen nesting on the 15th fairway, a sight to behold. On behalf of the city of Craig, I would like to welcome you to our community and hope you enjoy your visit. Please take time to visit our museums, take a tour of Colorado Northwestern Community College and The Memorial Hospital on top of the hill. Craig is the place to be and we are open for business. — Ray Beck, Mayor of Craig

Learning at all levels moffat County sChool DistriCt
Moffat County School District is rich with learning opportunities for the students of Craig. Starting with the youngest residents, the district offers multiple preschool options for children between the ages of 3 and 5, who can attend morning or afternoon sessions at the Early Childhood Center within the district administration building. The program is the hub for all early childhood development in MCSD and is staffed by numerous child care professionals. Preschool is also offered through each of the four elementary schools within Craig city limits: East, Ridgeview, Sandrock and Sunset. They are spread across town and each feature their own charms and dedicated teachers for their students grade. Programs promoting literacy are student favorites and the schools continue to implement technology into the classroom more and more each year to enhance their children’s worldviews. Higher education When it comes to post-secondary education, the Craig community has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years and will only continue to expand. In 2011, Colorado Northwestern Community College’s Craig campus went from being a small central location with buildings spread all over town to a single larger site where all its academic programs could thrive. CNCC offers many options for a variety of interests. Its career and technical programs allow pupils to get hands-on experience in the such as cosmetology, massage therapy, mine training and auto and diesel technology, with ample space for practical learning. The college’s proximity to The Memorial Hospital adds to a strong partnership between TMH and CNCC’s nursing program.
Courses in subjects like English, biology, business studies and more are transferable to larger schools should students decide to move on to a different path. The institution’s Craig and Rangely campuses are seeking out new educational opportunities constantly. Additionally, CNCC launched a paleontology program in the summer of 2015. Thanks to taxpayer funding, the regular instate tuition rate is half for CNCC students who have lived in Colorado for more than one year and Moffat County for more than six months, allowing an affordable college experience for full-time students or for those hoping to enhance their knowledge in a single subject. Additionally, the school hosts many events place for the community to learn.

Not everybody learns at the same pace, in the same manner or with the same emphasis. For parents seeking a different experience for their children beyond the traditional public school classroom, there are choices within Craig. For high school ages, Moffat County School District provides the Youth Experiencing Success Alternative Program, which caters to students who feel Moffat County High School uncomfortable in a larger school setting or if they have other needs, such as a unique family situation or even a full-time job. The Alternative School allows students to chart their own course with four-hour sessions at the MCSD administration building or at home, if necessary, using the computerbased Apex Learning, which covers the same educational standards as MCHS. The style of the program also allows them to participate in MCHS extracurricular activities and sports if they’re inclined, while being able to either catch up to where their peers are, or, in some cases, graduate high school early and move on to college or a career sooner. A similar set-up is available in Craig with 26

Inside scoop
how to hunt in ColoraDo
For newcomers to Colorado, the most important thing to do before hunting is to become a Colorado resident by getting a new ID. Non-resident hunting rates, especially
expensive. The next step is to take a hunter education course through Colorado Parks & Wildlife. Hunting education is available throughout the year all over the state in a variety of formats. Some take place over one weekend, with two lengthy days of instruction, while others are a couple hours per night over the course of a week. The course teaches about hunting safely, gun safety and hunting laws and regulations hunter education course that works for you and sign up is inexpensive. At the end of the course everyone who passes receives a hunter safety card and may now legally hunt in Colorado. After that, getting a hunting license is necessary. year in April in Colorado. Hunters apply for a if they earn a tag for that spot lottery-style. The limited draw is the only way to hunt certain animals in Colorado because of the overwhelming demand for those licenses. Hunting a bull moose or bull elk in certain units can take years of applying before getting lucky. But the longer you apply, the better chance you have of drawing a tag. Hunters who don’t draw earn points each year and those with more points are given a higher opportunity to draw in future years. If you don’t get the licenses you wanted in the limited draw, there’s still an opportunity to pick up over the counter licenses. Leftover licenses can be bought online at the CPW website, or are sold at a wide variety of stores around the state. Once you’ve got a license, you’re good to go! Just make sure to hunt with the proper amount of hunter orange and follow gun safety laws (all covered in the hunter education course).
