AS TOLD BY THE HOMEOWNER
There are lots of stories/rumors floating around out there about this house. Some we created, just for the fun of it, but we’ve heard many more. Frankly, we’ve enjoyed “stirring the pot” just for the amusement of hearing some of the stories making the rounds.
When the legend becomes fact, print the legend— A LINE FROM THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE
The lot was purchased back in the late 70s. If you come across a picture from that era you’ll see only a couple of houses on Ski Trail Lane. Back then it was just a dirt road and not all the utilities were even available. After 30 years we decided it was time to finally build our “Dream Home” up on Ski Trail Lane.
We had 30-some odd years to ponder what we wanted. Initally we gave our architect Joe Patrick Robbins only a few must-haves. We learned from our last property the benefit of one-level living and that we wanted the garage, two primary suites and the great room/ kitchen all on the entry level.
My wife was responsible for all the interior design. She spent countless hours designing and picking out furnishings, fixtures, hardware and materials. Fortunately, our builder, Dan Potts, and about 5 key people figured out how to make it all happen over a six year period. One of the design elements of the house that was originally challenging were the flat roofs. They were necessary however, due to the height restrictions and the high ceilings. The beams in the great room were a feat in themseleves – modern glulam beams that took a lot of distressing to make them the way they are today.
There are so many unique elements to this house it’s nearly impossible to describe them all.
We told our builder we wanted granite rocks the size of Volkswagens. Each rock is individually drilled and rebar attached to hold them to the wall. How some of them were placed into position is still a mystery, reminds me of the pyramids.
The front door is always a topic of conversation—it was carved with a chainsaw by a Sheldon Roberts, who we met at a chainsaw festival in Craig. The door weighs close to a ton, and a steel worker made the hinges that would hold the artwork.
The wood work in this house is incredible, and most was sourced in the area. The flooring and some of the oak beam work came from old oak barn somewhere in the midwest. We sourced the heavy interior doors that we wanted locally and the process took couple of years to finish.
One of the details not specified on the plans was the staircase. We insisted on large steps necessitating a spiral staircase and came up with the idea of a tree coming up from the bottom to wrap a staircase around. How they found a tree and made the staircase fit around it is still a bit of mystery. An eagle was carved at the top and a bear at the bottom. The scene on the wall going down the staircase all came from the family ranch in the Elk River Valley. The room that may be our favorite in the whole house is one of the half bathrooms that represents an elevated out-house. With rutic wood paneling, a “hole” where the toilet is, unique rusted metal finishes and again huge boulders that makes the sink look like it’s built into the rock, it’s probably the most unique bathroom in Steamboat.
Centralized, state of the art systems control the lighting, heating, air conditioning, entertainment and security throughout the residence. Each room in the home has an iPad with Savant app to control all features. All mechanical is on the lower level and includes four boilers—one for hot water and radiant floor heat on each side of the home, one for the driveway snow melt system and one for the two exterior decks. One of the homeowner’s design criteria was to make the home very secure for times when they would be traveling. The lower level doors are heavy steel core doors and by intent cannot be opened from the outside. Western Security and Ring cameras keep the perimeter safe.
