UNDER CONSTRUCTION
A GUIDE TO STEAMBOAT’S DEVELOPMENTS IN PROGRESS,
AND IT’S NOT WHAT YOU MIGHT THINK
It seems like you can’t throw a rock in Steamboat without hitting a construction site these days—from downtown to Mount Werner, there are holes in the ground everywhere with large crews and heavy machinery buzzing with activity. What’s with all the development?
“It’s not what you might think,” says David Baldinger Jr., Steamboat Sotheby’s International Realty Broker. “There is a lot of new construction activity, and most of it is in the affordable housing and lodging categories. I think it’s a positive sign for the marketplace,” he says. Baldinger attributes the recent explosion of hotel development to a need created by a vacuum after a handful of hotels were converted into condominiums in recent years. “That created a demand for more lodging,” Baldinger says. And of course there is a constant need for more affordable housing, with the Yampa Valley Housing Authority and local employers like UC Health stepping up to provide
new developments for Steamboat’s workforce.
“These massive construction sites around town might be alarming to some,” Baldinger says, “but the footprint of a completed development is a lot smaller than the initial excavation might suggest. These construction sites look major when they’re digging, but aren’t as big once they’re completed. A lot of it is for parking and landscaping, but the completed structures aren’t nearly as big as it might seem.” And while there are a few high-dollar luxury developments, that’s also a good sign of Steamboat’s vitality and continued growth and an indication of a burgeoning real estate market.
From downtown to the mountain, here’s a rundown of what’s digging.
LAGOM
Swedish for “not too big, not too small, but just right,” this privately developed multi-use complex featuring 24 tiny homes and 34 mini storage units is located on 13th Street, within walking distance to the heart of downtown Steamboat. While the units will be available for rent, these Scandinavian inspired units were specifically created to meet the urgent need for affordable workforce housing with private, well-built, bright living spaces. Kruse Builders are proud to be the first private developer in Steamboat to offer a complex that is 100% deeded as workforce housing, all without the use of a single taxpayer dollar. The goal is to help alleviate the massive demand for housing by offering well-designed, affordable living spaces for those who contribute to the local workforce. These units will be
available to anyone who qualifies as part of the local workforce, regardless of income level, giving a whole new meaning to the phrase “private equity.”
RIVERVIEW
Location doesn’t have to come with a 7-figure price tag, at least not for the 11 local employees who will be lucky enough to score one of these brand-new deed restricted units that will be set aside for local workers to rent at Riverview. Last January, Steamboat officials approved development plans for the 104-unit residential apartment project, situated along the Yampa River behind Natural Grocers. The developers, Gorman & Company, a Denver based firm, primarily focus on affordable and workforce housing. The city will get first dibs on the 11 deed-restricted apartments, including 3 studios, 4 – 1 bedrooms and 4 – 2 bedroom apartments before the remaining units hit the market. Talk about winning the lottery, this local housing will be the ultimate score.
NEW FIRE STATION & CITY HALL
It’s hard to miss the construction site smack dab in the middle of downtown on 10th Street and Lincoln Avenue where 2 city blocks will be transformed into a civic campus. The new city hall building, encompassing over 15,000 sq ft, will include a 3-story design that features public restrooms and meeting space and incorporates department adjacencies for improved efficiency, collaboration, and citizen service. Local firefighters will be loving the upgrades of this brand-new
downtown fire station. For starters, it will be a lot bigger, with more than 18,000 sq ft and 2 levels with drive-through access from 3 bays that will make it easier to park, move and store its trucks. The downtown site will also create a civic plaza between the facilities where the local community can gather and host events and local programs. A $750,000 Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) grant was awarded to the project—that’s what we like to call investing in the community.

CENTRAL PARK HOTEL
Construction officially kicked off in June for The Central Park Hotel near City Market, a much-needed lodging solution for easy access to downtown and the mountain. The 4-story, 180-room hotel will join the Sheraton Steamboat Resort Villas and the Residence Inn Steamboat Springs as local Marriott-flagged properties. Roger Gregory, Chief Executive Officer

COTTONWOODS AT MID VALLEY
When it comes to affordable housing, it doesn’t get much better than The Cottonwoods, located along the Core Trail close to Yampa River. Slated for completion in late 2025, 86 below market condos will be offered in 1, 2, and 3 bedroom configurations. The location can’t be beat, with easy access to both downtown and the ski area by free bus, bike, or short walk. This development was generously subsidized by a publicprivate partnership between YVHA and the developer, Lone Tree Trust, LLC to create this $110 million condo/ apartment housing development. Public contributions included $2.34 million from the local mill levy. Phase II will add 2 more 4-story buildings, offering 150 affordable rental apartments for the Routt County
at Serac Capital Partners the developer behind the project, says the hotel will be “Steamboat-centric” with a mountain lodge motif that will incorporate local art. The development will feature a resort-style pool, a bar and lounge area as well as a full-service restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating. With a lack of lodging in this area, it will fill a need for locals and visitors to be able celebrate happy hour all day—and night—long.
workforce and retirees. This is a great example of the community’s ongoing commitment to providing affordable housing for its local workforce.
ANGLERS FOUR HUNDRED
An employee housing development that truly showcases the efforts and resourcefulness of YVHA’s ability to resource tax credits to provide affordable housing, Anglers Four Hundred was achieved with $14 million provided by the state of Colorado, and the only project that was approved for such state funding on
downtown Steamboat, Anglers Four Hundred provides a total of 75 new affordable 1, 2 and 3 bedroom units across from the Sundance at Fish Creek shopping plaza and immediately adjacent to McDonald’s and Vectra Bank’s new location. The development targets those who earn from 30% to 80% of the annual median income, or $35,630–$95,280 for a household of 4, finally putting the “affordable” back into local housing.
7
THE AMBLE
The big hole in the ground between The West Condominiums and Steamboat Grand will be a new, all-electric residential community by East-West Partners and part of the overall upgrade of the base village redevelopment as newer, more modern luxury developments are completed. There are 42 residences, from 1 to 4 bedrooms, and are being offered for between $2.25–$7.7 million. This mountain modern development is all about energy efficiency and hopes to run at net zero with mechanical systems designed to capture, retain and reuse energy. The development will have pedestrian connectivity to the base area and other luxury amenities including heated spa and pool, fitness center, and underground heated parking. This is the kind of modern, sustainable luxury development that speaks to Steamboat’s future.
CRAWFORD SQ AT BURGESS CREEK
If you’ve driven up Burgess Creek Road in the last year, you probably noticed the construction site at the bottom that is just inches off the road on a cliffside perch overlooking the ski area. There are 3 duplexes with a total of 6 units, 4 of which are for sale, being offered between $7.1–$9.5 million. Each has its own heated attached 2-car garage, and ranges in size from 3,606 sq ft, 4 bedroom, 3.5 bath to over 5,000 sq ft, 6 bedroom, 5.5 bath. The project is expected to be completed by July 2025 and is another example of the modern upgrades that will elevate Steamboat’s overall real estate market and usher the resort onto the stage of world-renowned luxury ski destinations.
9 SKI TIMES SQUARE PROJECT
There’s more than luxury condominium developments going on at the ski area. The big dig going on at Ski Times Square is a civic improvement project that’s being funded by the Steamboat Springs Redevelopment Authority (SSRA). The Ski Time Square Drive Public Turnaround and Complete Streets Improvements
Project will formalize Ski Time Square Drive, upgrade the streetscape with new snow melted sidewalks and upgraded landscaping. It will also be a huge improvement for car traffic with a new public turnaround at the end of the public right of way. Construction was substantial complete in early November, 2024 with landscaping and final touches complete in spring 2025.
CREEK’S END
When it comes to local employers stepping up to meet the housing needs of its employees, UCHealth and Yampa Valley Medical Center have set the bar with a 42-unit, $30 million housing development to provide reliable housing for its workforce, located at the end of Walton Creek, just over a mile from the hospital. According to a hospital spokesperson, the housing units would be available to employees through a “weighted lottery,” which would provide for staff in certain critical roles and departments to qualify for an additional name entry into the drawing. The development has 2 – 3-story buildings, with 6 – 1 bedroom units, 24 – 2 bedroom units, and 12 – 3 bedroom units. The complex is expected to be finished by the beginning of next year and is just what the doctor ordered.
HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS
Just east of the ski area in what is fast becoming hotel row, is the construction of a new 4-story, Holiday Inn Express. The hotel will help fulfill the need for more lodging with 92 guest rooms and 9 planned staff housing rooms to help meet the housing needs of its employees.
With a crew from Steamboat-based Giovonni
Construction busy at work on site, the project will also employ about 50% local subcontractors. Lodging properties like these will provide visitors with a place to stay until they are struck with the Yampa Valley Curse—and eventually end up with a place to call home.

PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR HOME IS
HOW TO GET THE MOST RETURN ON INVESTMENT WITH HOME RENOVATIONS
Anyone who has done home renovations knows what a rabbit hole it can be, making endless decisions about everything from countertop materials and flooring to plumbing fixtures. It can also add up—fast. But there’s a big difference between renovating your home for yourself and doing it to increase your home’s value and curb appeal when you plan to sell.
That’s an important distinction to make, says Jackie Mahoney, Broker Associate, Steamboat Sotheby’s International Realty. “I’ve had a lot of experience renovating our own homes and also flipping houses, and there is a big difference when it comes to
$ $
everything from style to budget,” Mahoney says. “Not only are you going to be more budget conscious but you’re also going to stick to a more classic, timeless style that has a broader appeal.” The focus is on upgrades that improve home value and appeal to buyers as opposed to something that satisfies your own personal style and flair.
Colorado mountain homes are a breed all their own when it comes to the specific elements buyers are looking for. Here are the top 4 ways to improve your home value with simple upgrades that will give you the most bang for your buck when it comes to a return on investment.
WASH AWAY YOUR WORRIES
They say you only get one first impression, which is why a home’s exterior is just as important when it comes to renovations that bring a big return on investment. “Believe it or not, a power wash to the exterior can go a long way,” Mahoney says. “It’s all about curb appeal and you’d be amazed how much a power wash can improve the appearance of a home. It’s all about presentation and it’s a lot more cost effective than replacing windows, siding or decking.”
A fresh coat of paint can also improve value by giving a home a clean, updated look without breaking the bank.
IF YOU CAN’T TAKE THE HEAT, UPGRADE THE KITCHEN
“It’s common knowledge that when it comes to renovations, kitchens matter the most, simply because that’s where we spend so much of our time,” Mahoney says. But it can be tricky to execute a budget-friendly renovation, especially when it comes to kitchens, where upgrades can add up fast. “Cabinets can get extremely expensive, especially if you’re talking about custom,” Mahoney says. You’re going to get a lot more out of your money investing in new appliances and countertops, especially if you’re resourceful. “We once found a refurbished Viking stove online, but it doesn’t have to be top-of-the-line. You can still find affordable, nice looking appliances at big box stores, but it makes a huge difference in terms of giving a kitchen an upgraded look.” The same goes for countertop materials—it doesn’t have to be Carrara marble, but if a kitchen has dated countertops, that’s going to cost you a lot more in the long run in terms of home value than investing in something clean and updated.
SMALL ROOM, BIG CHANGES
When it comes to bathrooms, “all of it matters,” Mahoney says, from vanities and sinks to faucets and fixtures. Start with the bigger picture. “Tile is a big one, from flooring to the shower and bathtub.” There’s a lot you can do with porcelain tile by using different patterns (think: herringbone) shapes (geometric tiles are trending) and large-format tiles. “Stick with neutrals and clean, timeless design that will have a broader appeal,” Mahoney says. Another trick of the trade—removing walls to turn a smaller space into something more luxurious and spacious, which can be especially effective with bathrooms and closets. Dual sinks and more modern vanities give bathrooms an instant upgrade and new plumbing fixtures can also make a huge difference, Mahoney says. “Bronze and black are popular, but brushed nickel is still clean and timeless. Again, be careful to avoid anything too trendy.”
SHED SOME LIGHT
If there’s one thing interior designers are always thinking about, it’s lighting. “Updated lighting can make a profound difference in a space,” Mahoney says. The key is ambient lighting and updating old fixtures and bulbs that create that harsh overhead lighting that’s a thing of the past. LED lighting strips can be used everywhere from beneath vanity drawers and behind mirrors to along ceiling and floor seams. Automated lighting is another big one—lights set on a timer that will illuminate automatically, say in the bathroom, and then set on a timer to shut off, feel very
modern and updated, but don’t cost a lot of money. These subtle touches relatively inexpensive and can make a space feel more modern and appealing.
FROM THE GROUND UP
Flooring in Colorado, especially in mountain homes can be tricky. Heavy use, especially for our outdoor, equipment-heavy lifestyle, require flooring that is bomb proof, scratch resistant, and won’t buckle over time because of the dryness. “Plank vinyl flooring could be here to stay in Colorado,” Mahoney says. “It’s still going to look nice in 5–10 years and is neutral enough not to be outdated.” Look for heavily grained patterns that don’t show dirt and dust, which can be hard to keep up with in our dry climate. It’s not cheap, but good flooring is worth the investment.
Figuring out when to spend and when to save are a delicate dance when it comes to getting that return on investment in home renovation, but in general, you want things to be as clean, updated, and timeless as possible. “It’s all about presentation,” Mahoney says. “Not everyone has the ability to imagine the potential for a home, but a few simple upgrades can bring that vision to life.”

STEAMBOAT COUPLE DEBUT BACKCOUNTRY YURT OPERATION
SARAH PETERSON HAS BEEN SELLING REAL ESTATE IN STEAMBOAT FOR NEARLY A DECADE, AND NOW SHE AND HER HUSBAND, COREY, OFFICIALLY HAVE THEIR OWN PIECE OF PARADISE. IT’S NOT OF THE LUXURY VACATION HOME VARIETY SHE’S SO WELL VERSED IN AFTER ALL THESE YEARS, BUT A SLICE OF COLORADO’S UNTOUCHED MOUNTAIN WILDERNESS THAT ALLOWS ITS GUESTS A TRUE OUTDOOR ESCAPE AND GETAWAY.
The longtime Steamboat couple were named concessionaires of the yurt system located in State Forest State Park in January by Colorado Parks and Wildlife and have been working hard all spring and summer to get their new venture, Yonder Yurts, up and running for the 2024–2025 winter season.
The couple, who are passionate about the outdoors, were repeat visitors as guests when they started dating and enjoyed many weekends over the years to cross-country ski, camp, hike and fish. They fell in love with the pristine wilderness area, located in Gould, Colorado outside Walden, about an 80-minute drive from Steamboat. “Being able to disconnect and spend time together in nature has always been really important to us. We loved going there when we first met and then later, with our kids, and have so many great memories. We always fantasized about what it would be like to run a place like that ourselves one day, but it almost seemed like too big of a dream to grasp,” Sarah says. “When we found out the contract was up, we knew it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and we knew that we had to try.”
Sarah said it was an amazing experience to partner with her husband, who has worked at Steamboat
Resort for 20 years and is currently the Vice President of Operations, Maintenance, and Facilities. “It was the perfect blend of our skill sets,” she says, noting his background in managing on-mtn construction projects and operations at the resort, and her strength in sales and marketing after so many years working in real estate. “We really enjoyed working on the proposal together. When we met with the park rangers, it went really well and everything just sort of fell into place.”
“We were thrilled to collaborate with State Forest State Park in reintroducing the beloved yurt system this summer,” Corey said. “We have long recognized the potential to enhance the previous yurts, so when the opportunity arose to become the new concessionaire, we were absolutely thrilled. These remote yurts hold a special place in the hearts of park visitors, and we’re honored to play a role in bringing back this unique offering.”
As soon as the couple learned they were awarded the contract last January, they got straight to work. The first order of business was to build the yurts with Freedom Yurt Cabins, all-season hard-sided models. There are 7 total yurts, named Grass Creek, Dancing Moose, Medicine Bow, North Fork Canadian, Clark Peak and Upper and Lower Montgomery Pass. All but
one yurt will have new decks, built to optimize the surrounding views of the Never Summer Mountain Range. Skylights in the domes of all the yurts offer premium nighttime stargazing. Guests can choose between 20 ft yurts that can accommodate up to 9 people and 16 ft yurts with room for 6. The yurts include a wood burning stove, solar power, equipped kitchens and bunk beds (some with full size lower bunks). “These hard-sided yurts are more comfortable and better insulated with a higher R-value than the soft-sides ones,” she says. “Over time, we plan to add more amenities to make the experience even more comfortable for our guests.” There’s also a 25 ft yurt that will serve as an office and staff housing. While
the Petersons will keep their day jobs, they will have an on-site manager and will be making the commute to Yonder Yurts most weekends.
Yonder Yurts plans to preserve the purist’s wilderness experience that first attracted the couple years ago. Enjoy cross-country skiing, backcountry skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling and ski touring, but with a relatively short ski in. “It’s ideal for a first-time backcountry experience, whether it’s families with kids or people who want to escape to the wilderness without having to worry about a long or technical approach,” Sarah says. After all, she and her loved ones made memories there—now it’s time for you and yours.

THE BUZZ
A GUIDE FOR CLEAN
ENERGY AND BENEFICIAL ELECTRIFICATION
There is a lot of talk these days about new development that is “all electric” and (literal) buzz around renewable energy and sustainability, but what is the difference between new buildings that tout “all electric” and the old-fashioned electricity we have always had?
“When talking about electrification, it’s important to clarify between electrification and beneficial electrification” says Mike Beyer, Energy Resources Specialist, Yampa Valley Electric Association, a member-owned electric co-op serving 23,000 members in the 7,000 square mile territory surrounding Steamboat Springs and the Yampa Valley. Electrification means you are shifting the end use of energy sources from fossil fuel to electric. But what YVEA has focused on with its extensive rebate program is to encourage its members to implement updated products and systems for Beneficial Electrification.
SO, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
“Beneficial Electrification solutions will benefit YVEA members, local communities, and the environment such that it achieves one of the following without adversely impacting the others.
• Save members money over time
• Improves quality of life
• Enable better grid management
• Reduce negative environmental impact
We are not just trying to sell our members electrification. We want to promote products that help our members, the grid and the environment as well,” Beyer says.
Shifting to “Beneficial Electrification will help align the consumption of energy to when the power is being produced. Implementing these systems is straightforward for new construction, but retrofitting existing homes can be a bit of a challenge. Still, it is doable.
“It is worthwhile if it saves more money over time than it costs upfront. Individual homes can make a difference on the overall efficiency of the grid,” Beyer says.
That is why YVEA is dedicated to helping its members with rebates on various products to facilitate Beneficial Electrification that is not only good for quality of life, the environment, and grid management but also for your wallet.
HEAT PUMPS
Heat pumps are more efficient than conventional heating systems like boilers or electric heaters because they transfer heat rather than generate it. A typical heat pump has a coefficient of performance (COP) of around four, meaning it produces four times as much energy as it uses. Heat pumps extract heat from an outside source and moves it from the compressor to the indoor coils. In the summer, the process uses a reversing valve to move the refrigerant to the outdoor coils and cools the home. “An amazing byproduct of installing a cold climate heat pump is it will provide the comfort of air conditioning in the summer as well as heat in winter,” Beyer says, noting that it must be a cold climate heat pump because a standard heat pump will not operate efficiently in our climates lower temperatures.
Installing heat pumps is a no-brainer if you’re talking about new construction, but if you are interested in doing a conversion to your existing home there
can be challenges, the first step is to get an energy assessment to understand the upgrades you will need to allow the heat pump to operate efficiently—YVEA rebates are available through the Yampa Valley Sustainability Council. There are several types of heat pumps to consider: air to air (including mini splits), air to water, and geothermal. Air to air uses existing or new duct work, previously used with a gas furnace, to move the air throughout the house, air to water goes through existing or new pipes in the floor or radiators on the wall, which is why these two types of heat pumps can be a challenge to retrofit into an existing house. M ini splits, however, can be added to any existing home. Mini splits allow you to control the temperature in each individual room or zone and can help save money on your energy bill.
ELECTRIC VEHICLES
“If you drive an all-electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid, YVEA offers a rebate on installing a level 2 charger at your residence. Whether you are thinking about purchasing an EV or already own one, it is crucial to be able to charge your vehicle at home and keep it fully charged for those trips out of town,” Beyer says “It is best to charge your car between 10pm–3pm.”
ELECTRIC LAWN EQUIPMENT
“I just transitioned to electric lawn equipment this summer, and I love it,” Beyer says. “It’s actually a great introduction to Beneficial Electrification.”
All outdoor equipment, from lawn mowers and snow blowers to weed whackers, trimmers, and chainsaws are now available in all-electric versions. “No more gas cans in the garage, no more oil changes. These electric units offer quiet operation, minimal maintenance, and low emissions. Also, no more gas fumes leaking into my home. And my 10-year-old daughter was mowing the grass this summer,” Beyer says. Better yet, rebates are available through YVEA, and many vendors offer a 30 percent (Colorado tax credit) discount at the register. “It’s a no brainer.”
HOT WATER HEAT PUMPS
Like heat pumps that are used to heat homes, hot water heat pumps can also be used to heat domestic hot water the same way, by moving heat from one place to another instead of generating heat directly. Hot water heat pumps are 3-4 times more efficient than standard resistive water heaters and gas or propane hot water heaters. “It works the same way as a cold climate heat pump. It is just a tiny heat pump on top of water heater storage tank,” Beyer says. It is best to plan for installing these before an emergency replacement is needed. Ask your local HVAC installer if they will work for you. This is another way to maximize energy efficiency in your home and to bring your costs down. It is a win for you and for the environment.
HOW DO HEAT PUMPS WORK?
By transferring heat rather than creating it, heat pumps deliver hot water 3–4 times more efficiently than conventional water heaters.
Heat pump pulls warmth from air
Warm air is compressed, increasing its temp
heat to the water
HEAT PUMP CLOTHES DRYERS
There are energy efficient home appliances coming into the market all the time, and one of the latest and greatest are heat pump clothes dryers. “They don’t need to be vented to the outside, which is a huge bonus,” Beyer says. “There is even a combo unit that is a washing machine and a heat pump dryer in one. In two hours, your clothes are washed and dried which is really cool.” These units operate on 110-volt power instead of 240-volt, and YVEA offers rebates on both dryers and combo (washer/dryer) units.
SMART BREAKER PANELS
“These should really be included in all new construction,” Beyer says. A smart breaker panel allows you to effectively manage the energy loads within your home from your smart phone. “You can turn something on or off remotely. It is an amazingly valuable tool that should be a standard feature of any smart home. It is also the wave of the future when it comes to energy management.”
SMART THERMOSTATS
If your number one concern is a high electric bill during the coldest months when your household is constantly using heat, it is worth your time and money to invest in a line voltage smart thermostat that allows you to control the thermostat from your smart phone. “We give rebates on up to six of them,” Beyer says. “It’s a simple trick to make sure your electric baseboard is off or at least turned way down when you are not in the living space, or at least have it on lower.” This is a huge bonus for second homeowners who are not always around and for property owners that have short-term vacation rentals to prevent high electric bills that result from heating an empty or unoccupied space. YVEA rebates are only offered for line voltage thermostats that control electric baseboard heaters.
HEAT TAPE TIMERS
“Even in the coldest winter months, your heat tape does not have to operate 24-7,” Beyer says. “Yet most YVEA members have it on 24-7 from November through March.” It is incredibly simple to install a
timer and program your heat tape to operate from 6am – 4pm. “This small measure will cut the cost of your heat tape usage in half,” Beyer says, suggesting if you monitor it, you can reduce it even further. This is yet another example of the ways energy efficiency is also beneficial to your pocketbook—and who does not want that? Save even more money by taking advantage of YVEA heat tape timer rebates.
It does not matter if you implement one or all these energy efficient options—now you can warm your home and your heart knowing you are doing your part for the planet. //yvea.com
PERSPECTIVE A MATTER OF
THE FIRST-EVER WINTER CARNIVAL: FINDING ROOTS AT WOODCHUCK HILL
When Robert “RC” Dieckhoff learned he was selected as the artist to create this year’s Winter Carnival poster, the first thing he did was take a deep dive into its history. Inspired by the first-ever Winter Carnival in 1914, which was held at Woodchuck Hill (the current site of Colorado Mountain College), he researched everything from locating the precise spot where the first ski jump was erected and the purpose of the inaugural event to its geology and spent countless
LOCAL ARTIST ROBERT DIECKHOFF FINDS A NEW ANGLE ON THIS YEAR’S WINTER CARNIVAL POSTER
hours going through photo archives at the Tread of Pioneers Museum. “I was surprised to learn that a lot of people didn’t know the first Winter Carnival was before Howelsen Hill even existed.”
It’s not surprising Dieckhoff turned to history and geology to begin the process of creating the design for the poster. The intricate analysis and theories Dieckhoff employs in his extensive creative process involve a multidisciplinary approach to creativity that integrates science, math, and history. “I won’t go beyond an initial sketch until it fulfills a mathematical formula; math is the foundation of our physical reality” says the 76-year-old, who has lived in Steamboat since 1998. “The spatial relationship is how one space, created by shapes, relates to another by size, shape, color, density and position. To be an artist, you have to understand physics. It’s integral to everything.”
ART
A LIFE SHAPED BY ART
A young surfer who grew up in San Diego, Dieckhoff started painting when he was four years old. But it wasn’t until 1967 when his mother, also a professional artist, entered one of his paintings in the Cabrillo Arts Festival that he realized his potential. “I was in Vietnam and didn’t even know she’d entered my painting in the contest,” he says. “It won second place, and I didn’t even know how I did it or exactly what I had done, I just knew I wanted to do it again, to figure out how to replicate it.” His lifelong career began painting signs for a local surfboard company in exchange for surfboards, and quickly evolved into illustration, doing commercial work for magazines and manuals, and eventually fine art.
He quickly outgrew the tedium of working with oil paints (“took too long to dry,” he says) and moved onto acrylics and an early interest in digital graphic art that, in the 1970s turned out to be ahead of its time. “My professor told me the computer I’d need would cost 250 thousand dollars,” he says with a laugh. “I said, ‘forget that.’”
After his tour in Vietnam as a Navy radio technician, Dieckhoff traveled to Japan in the late ‘60s where he became fascinated by the Ukiyo-e Japanese
masters. “It was an accepted way of doing things, as in Impressionism, Surrealism or Abstractionism,” he says, and it’s continued to have a huge influence on his work to this day. Characterized by a vibrant color palate, bold outlines to define shapes, and the unique spatial effects and perspective, Dieckhoff’s designs are characterized by surrealism—or what he calls “peripheral compression”—that evoke an almost psychedelic quality reminiscent of the era when he came of age.
“I’ve heard people describe it as a fisheye, but the eye can actually see a view scape of more than 260 degrees with a peripheral perspective,” he says. “I’m taking that and squeezing it into a narrower rectangle to emphasize a subject or a certain component of the design.” Dieckhoff says he views his subjects through proportional relationships woven in dynamic equilibrium with a play of color and contrast to define dimensions. Now that technology has caught up and become considerably more affordable, Dieckhoff has finally been able to create his designs on an iPad Pro, though he still uses a sketchbook outside and takes dozens, and sometimes hundreds of photographs to bring back to his studio. “They haven’t designed a screen I can see in sunlight yet,” he says.
INSPIRATION
FINDING INSPIRATION IN THE YAMPA VALLEY
Dieckhoff says he’s found a lifetime of abundant inspiration in the iconic landscapes of the Yampa Valley. “Northwest Colorado is particularly sacred and unique because it sits in an impact zone where the plains meet the mountains,” he says. “This creates energy, stimulates imagination and encourages artists to touch space.”
From his roots as a ski bum working odd jobs, Dieckhoff became a prolific artist over the last 52 years and has shown his work at galleries ranging from the White House to Hawaii. He’s also had an integral role in the local art community as the Founding President of the Steamboat Art Museum, Steamboat Public Art Board, and curator for the Steamboat International Art Board.
He spent countless hours on sifting through all the photo archives on the Tread of Pioneers website to learn as much as he could about that inaugural Winter Carnival event before he even thought about sketching. He discovered that when Marjorie Perry took the train to nearby Hot Sulphur Springs, Colorado to attend a Winter Carnival event, she watched Carl Howelsen ski jump. She managed to convince him to then come to Steamboat, where he built a jump on Woodchuck Hill, and the first Steamboat Carnival was born. It also introduced Steamboat to competitive skiing and ski jumping, which until then, had only been used for transportation.
Consistent with techniques employed by Ukiyo-e masters, Dieckhoff repeats Howelsen’s figure three times in the Winter Carnival painting that also features the bold colors and challenges in perspective that have come to define his work. “I hope that the
poster will commemorate this piece of Steamboat history and this site on Woodchuck Hill as the original Winter Carnival venue,” he says. “It was truly an honor to be a part of it.”
