AB Dvinci is an up and coming rap artist from Corpus Christi, Texas. His brand of hip hop is a mixture of gritty, honest lyrics, and southern soul with just enough bounce. In December of 2013 Dvinci released, Sleepin on the Southpaw. This album is an all-original production by Dvinci and inludes some of the best engineers, producers, and artists in the state. On his previous album, Guapo Gusta (2011), Dvinci had collaborated with Corpus Christi's own DJ Koop Knocka.

You can get both albums in Corpus Christi at Disc Go Round and Underground Sounds as well as online at iTunes, CD Baby, and Google Plastered.

In support of Sleepin on the Southpaw Dvinci released a new video in May via Youtube.com, "Skatin on em". This video was directed by Ryan Bazan in collaboration with Michael Castro.

Dvinci is making his own mark in the rap game. He along with Novanation and House of Rock are presenting Claim the Crown on June 19th. This show is featuring some of Corpus Christi’s finest rap and hip hop performers including a Beat Showcase by the 361 Kingz. The show will be hosted by Emakulate with DJ HeavyHands spinning.

BANGING YOUR HEAD J. Michael Dolan (:21) Really? Do you think more "effort" is going to make a difference? Do you think more “struggle” is going to do it? What about “trying real hard,” will that get you closer?

Every day the voice in our head prods us to work harder with more effort. However the biggest successes in my life had less to do with “effort” and more to do with a clear vision of where I wanted to go, a mountain of rigorous research to light the way, a ruthless commitment to shield me from distractions, as much cocky confidence as I could muster, and a boatload of courage to bolster those scary, risky choices and decisions.

I realize those are overused, contemporary buzz-words. However for me, those worn out clichés’ have grounded me more and driven me farther than I ever imagined.

SABOTAGE J. Michael Dolan (:20) Watch out for it. It will do you in every time. If you’re the leader of a rock band, owner of a small biz, or the president of a big corp. you have to watch out for others.

However if you're the CEO of your own world you have to watch out for your Self!

Sabotage shoves worthwhile projects to the back burner and moves easier and safer ones to the front.

Sabotage causes great ideas to get squashed because something someone said caused you not to believe in them anymore.

Sabotage provokes unique concepts & designs to be replaced by more conservative, benign ones.

Sabotage sends dreams & visions to the “waitlist” because of doubt & uncertainty.

SHIVERING DENIZENS SEX DRUGS & OUTLAW COUNTRY (SELF RELEASED) If Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart built a country band it would be much like Seattle’ own kings’ of “Raunchy Tonk,” the Shivering Denizens. The quartet spent ten days in Nashville with Andy Gibson at his home studio and the result s their new album Sex, Drugs & Outlaw Country.

The ten song collection is a sonic delight as Gibson (who plays for Hank Willians III) added his superb steel playing to the mix and brought in veteran session players Billy Contreras on fiddle and Rory Hoffman on piano. The Denizens have built a ravenous following with their crackerjack delivery of jacked up two step and rockabilly beats to accompany their tales of debauchery and trashy beer drinking sing alongs. Leader Ron E Banner is in rare form here as he kicks off the album with ”Barroom Brawler,” the story of a character we’ve all seen a time or two. The fiddle joins rapid fire banjo from Lee Harvey Hartwood for the spin your partner round song of a broken hearted cowboy “Vixen Blues.” The high lonesome pedal steel arrives on another tear jerker two step about romance and drug abuse “Bubbles In A Spoon.”

REVIEWS skills on the standup bass during “Crooked and Crazy,’ as Banner paints a self portrait of his life as a honky tonk hero that is no doubt a fan favorite of the band’s live show with its raise one up and shout it out chorus. The blue movie soundtrack “Cell Block 69,” must have been inspired by the Orange is the New Black Netflix series, a “song about women in prison,” or it may just be a misogynists wet dream. The lighthearted “Carnival Song,” gives Gibson another chance to show off those pedal Steel skills, and then we get a dose of old time religion during the bluegrass holler “We’re All Gonna Die.” The barrel house piano perfectly sets up the scene for the rambling “Barefoot and Pregnant,’ a great dance song about a gal who “even though she’s pretty, she’s mean as hell and gritty,” just the way the Denizens like em’ http://www.theshiveringdenizens.com

JAMES BYRNES ST LOUIS TIMES (BLACK HEN MUSIC) Veteran actor Jim Byrnes is familiar with working in ensembles and painting pictures with a cast of characters. For his loving tribute to his home town St. Louis, Byrnes teamed up again with Steve Dawson, the musical director and production guru at Black Hen Music, who gathered some of the best roots musicians in Canada together to record the basic tracks for the April 2014 release St. Louis Times.

The twelve tracks are a mixture of songs that were recorded by St. Louis musicians like Chuck Berry, Stump Johnson, Little Milton, and Peetie Wheatstraw, along with several new tunes written by Byrnes that pay tribute to the city of his birth and the music he grew up on. Authentic is the best accolade to assign to the collection recorded by Dawson on vintage equipment at The Henhouse studios in Vancouver, BC. The brilliant rhythm section of Jeremy Holmes on bass and Geoff Hicks on drums chose fat tones and smooth grooves to support each reinvention and adaptation. John Hammond is first among the guest stars adding greasy harmonica to the Albert King classic “I Get Evil,” and the low down blues “Somebody Lied, “both of which feature Dawson’s renowned slide guitar. Darryl Havers anchors the Chuck Berry staple “Nadine” to a funky groove on the Wurlitzer allowing Byrnes room to work the lyric.

The sassy seductress Colleen Rennison trades barbs with Byrnes on the Fontella Bass and Bobby McLure hit “Miss Me,” bolstered by the addition of a tight three piece horn section. Hammond returns to join in the bawdy rag time ramble “The Duck Yas Yas Yas,” complete with soaring clarinet and tuba. Byrnes’ narrative “The Journey Home,” could easily be found in a Ken Burns film. Of course no tribute would be complete without W.C Handy’s blue print “St. Louis Blues,” delivered here with love and gusto, while the reading of “Cake Alley,” sounds like a remaster of the 1930’s gem. Colin James adds some slick picking to the easy swing of “That Will Never Do,” a tune first recorded

by Little Milton at iconic Bobbin Records in East St. Louis.

Byrnes and Co. close the album with a mournful take on Lonnie Johnson’s “Another Night To Cry,” milking the emotion out of the ballad from another St. Louis Bluesman who found refuge north of the 45th parallel. ~ http://www.jamestbyrnes.com

STEAM: In a recent interview with the band Garbage they said that the most important thing they had to learn over the years was to be able to have a life outside of music. Looking at where you guys are now, John Rzeznik’s recent marriage and you just having a baby, do you agree that the real success is that life outside of music?

GGD: I agree especially if you start in this business when you are a kid, eighteen or nineteen years old.

When you try to do anything for a prolonged period of time you are going to miss out on a lot of things.

In this business those life events seem to happen later on when you have the time to do so. I think you have to have that life because the current music industry can warp your perspective on things if you don’t.

over the years including most recently Taylor Swift performing ‘Iris’ at some of her concerts. Do you credit those STEAMMAGAZINE.NET younger musicians as the reason you have such a wide age range to your fan base?

GGD: I love when bands cover our material.

What I find best is the unique spin they all put on the material because when their fans search out who we are it opens their mind to our musical styling’s in comparison.

STEAM: The tour you are on with Daughtry and Plain White T’s is your largest to date. With that in mind is it difficult to put together a set list comprised of your classics and new material?

GGD: Actually there was a very lengthy heated discussion about as we were trying to figure out what would go into our seventy five minute set list. We love playing material from the new records so I can say there will be a good balance between new material and our hits.

STEAM: Everyone remembers the 1999 Grammy STEAM: A slew of artists have covered your material

STEAM: Unlike other veteran rock groups whose album sales are diminishing an only really serve to be part of their memorabilia the Goo Goo Dolls still have the availability to sell out concerts and still top the album charts. What makes you different from a band like Van Halen or even more recently Aerosmith who failed to grab a spot on the charts?

GGD: I think it’s our fans. They have been great in supporting everything that we do. Management also plays a role as well making sure we are performing in prime locations and providing great promotion for our album and concert events. I think the other thing to note is that while there might be some internal drama you won’t catch any of us on TMZ. We’re a tight nit group with amazing chemistry that is respectful and grateful to the jobs we have. We would never jeopardize that by making tabloid fodder; that only serves to hurt, not help.

PawPaw Fruit – This interesting fruit tastes like a mixture of mango, banana and melon. It’s native to the woodlands of the eastern United States, spreading across the eastern part of the country to eastern Kansas and Texas, and from the Great Lakes almost to the Gulf. The fruit grows on a narrowly conical tree between 12 and 20 feet tall, with dark green, obovate-oblong, drooping leaves growing up to 12 inches long. Maroon, upside-down flowers produce multiple fruits. The pawpaw is the largest edible fruit native to North America. Individual fruits weigh 5 to 16 ounces and are 3 inches to 6 inches long. The larger sizes will appear plump, similar to the mango.

The fruit ripens during a four-week period between mid-August and into October. A 100-gram serving contains 29 calories.

It is a branching, scraggly looking plant with blue or lavender flowers. At the base, leaves resemble dandelion leaves, then are alternately spaced and much smaller as they get higher up on the stem. Young leaves can be tossed in a salad, and mature leaves can be used as a cooked vegetable. Chicory has a somewhat bitter taste.

Leaves and root are eaten most frequently, and although the flower is edible, it is very bitter. One cup of raw greens contains 41 calories.

Dandelion Greens – These invasive greens found practically everywhere – yards, woods, between cracks in sidewalks – are first noticeable by bright yellow flowers, then by the tall feathery puff of a plume growing on top. One cup of cooked greens has 35 calories.

Mushrooms – These delicacies can be found on land that has some kind of spring of water flowing through it, and decaying, rotting trees that have fallen.

Morels grow alongside these trees, usually nestled in decaying leaves. Frequently, just the tip of the morel will be visible, so careful searching is important. Conical in shape, their caps have a wrin-

Look for long and narrow leaves, with several leaves extending from each stalk, ranging from 2 to 8 inches long. Hickory trees always have an odd number of leaves, ranging from seven to 17 on any given stalk. The leaves have serrated edges. Look for a woody outer husk on the nut, which is dark to light brown; it may be partially cracked open to reveal the nut inside.

Nine nuts equals 186 calories.

Persimmons – Persimmon trees grow from New England to Kansas and Texas to Florida, with unique bark structure of thick, gray-black blocky squares about 11/2 inches across in a mosaic pattern. Leaves are up to 6 inches long and 3 inches wide, dark green on the top, and lighter green on the underside. Persimmon leaves grow alternately, have an elliptical shape, and are pointed at both ends.

The ripe fruit is a deep orange color in the fall and midwinter. The taste is a mixture of plum, date and apricot.

One piece of fruit contains 32 calories.

Every week, the team at STEAM Magazine reviews music submitted by hundreds of artists from all over America. The torrent of submissions never slows down day or night and there is no shortage of good bands or their good music. But that's not the point; music fills our lives at nearly every hour and the average person listens passively, un-phased by the next flawless derivative of guitar-driven, three -chord harmony. The purpose of the music press ought to be to reveal why certain artists deserve your attention.

STEAM: It seems like this band's trajectory is unconventional in a number of ways-- electrified fiddles and mandolins, musician diplomats, etc...

Where do you see this going in the next year?

Next five years?

This June, STEAM Magazine is proud to present Future Roots band, The Boston Boys, as the artists whose radical genrebending and originality pumped new blood into our brains and sexual organs. Simply, this band makes you want to use both at the same time. A quick comparison to The Wood Brothers, Ray Charles, Paul Simon, or Punch Brothers is only partially satisfying because "Future Roots" seems to embody an expanding spirit of musicianship beyond their years. We decided to sit down with the band and ask a few questions.

STEAM: What's the backstory behind the band's formation and the "Future Roots" vibe?

The Boston Boys: Each member of the band had a childhood immersed in at least one distinct form of American music, whether that be soul, bluegrass, jazz, or the evolution between blues, country, and rock n' roll. In 2012, we secured our tour with the U.S. State Department in North Africa and the Middle East because of this original, American sound and being able to impart it through educational workshops that introduced students to some deeper cuts in American music. Seeing the communication barriers crumble because of the music and collaborators we met along the way brought us to say that we play "Future Roots" music. It's a nod to who we are as well as how we would like to make an impact.

STEAM: Do you find it intimidating to meet such different audiences around the world? How

weeks. We were notified that we got the Residency just four weeks in advance, so half of the songs were composed and arranged during that studio time, contextualized by all of these ideas and exercises from the morning classes. The entire experience was transformative because it got us thinking about who we are as a band in a much deeper way. The next record is already written with these considerations, so it's just a matter of scheduling recording time at this point.

BB: Every tour is better than the last and we just need to stay focused on what matters-- creating communities through music. What's unconventional about that?

is your original music received?

BB: Working abroad like this does not feel intimidating so much as it is an ideal challenge for working musicians. Oftentimes, we have two or three events per day (one or two workshops at a school or community center, followed by a concert at night) and a stack of new songs to learn and perform with the local musicians in the next location.

But you're right, the audience and their energy carries the day every time. We are very lucky to be working with the embassy staff because they really have their hand on the pulse of the music scene and know who to go to when they want to put on a show. It's common for them to pack out a city theater with 400+ people that already know all of our songs from watching them on YouTube.

To us, it seems like these audiences are starved for live Western music and that they love America!

We were in Egypt two months before Morsi's abuses set off massive protests, and those fans continue to contact us on Facebook and Twitter today. Our

tour was nearly six decades after Louis Armstrong inaugurated this State Department program with his own performances in Egypt. Today, many Egyptians want their country to be a democracy.

Our video “What You Say?!?� (YouTube.com) documents some clips from our tour to Morocco in January 2014. We recently returned from Colombia and our pictures are posted on Facebook.

STEAM: You just released a new EP called, Idea of Love, in May. It is very different from your earlier releases, so I'm curious to know how you may have altered the creative process for this EP? BB: Idea of Love is special because it's the product of being the first band to complete the Music Residency program at Zoo Labs, an exceptional nonprofit studio in Oakland, CA. Every day, we took classes in the morning, followed by 12 hours of studio time to make this EP. Essentially, we received mini-MBA's in music entrepreneurship and had free reign over a top notch studio for two

In the next year, we want to expand on our work in music education by taking our workshop programs to public and charter high schools in the U.S. All of us owe our chops as musicians to the mentors that worked with us while we were in school and pushed us to go attend Berklee, where we met. In light of our work with State, we feel like these workshops give us purpose beyond the band's original music and the touring scene.

At a time when creativity and adaptability could not be more valuable, politicians want the schools to be designed for supporting existing needs rather than angling for the future and innovating. Kids are either caught in the middle or squished by their college debt, if they are lucky enough to get there in the first place. Perhaps a national conversation on education economic reform through music is more of a five-year goal.

Personal experience (good and bad), events of historical significance (joyous and tragic), stories about the colorful childhood my father spent in New Orleans (and he can spin a tale with the best of them) are at the core of most of my narrative portraits. But dreams, nature and emotions naturally play a part in the creative process, as well.

Does inspiration come to you or do you actively seek

it?

I don't think one can hunt down inspiration; I believe sometimes it comes knocking at your door; other times, you trip over it.

Is there one piece this is special to you, or that you particularly enjoyed creating?

"The Katrina Triptych" (2007) is the work I consider my most accomplished. I was raised in southern Louisiana and profoundly affected by the event itself (Hurricane Katrina, 2005) and the lives so tragically affected. The unique culture and history of New Orleans is irreplaceable and is rooted in the AfricanAmerican community that has resided there for centuries. I felt

overwhelmingly compelled to express my emotions on canvas. The Katrina Triptych was conceptualized as both a document and spiritual representation of this American tragedy. A giclee print of the painting was gifted to the Lord Mayor of Koblenz, Germany - a gesture of goodwill by delegates from their sister city, Austin. Many prints of the original have sold in Austin, New Orleans, Houston, San Francisco, Palm Beach, Florida, Santa Fe, Savannah and various European cities. It is my hope to be able to bring the original triptych to New Orleans in some capacity for the 10 year anniversary of the event.

STEAM Please tell me about the story behind the Anne Frank narrative painting.

CF I was "gifted" inspiration in the form of a request from an Austin gallery regarding this painting; they wanted me to create something as a symbolic remembrance and respect to those who lost their lives during the Holocaust...at the same time, artistically denouncing the horrors of war. One of my greatest honors and most humbling moments was being on hand when this painting was displayed, along with photographs taken by her father Otto Frank, at the Houston Holocaust Museum. It hung at the museum for six months, and was afterward purchased by a private collector in New York City.

STEAM What are you currently working on?

CF I've been quite involved creating illustrations and

graphics for a coffee-table book "Historic Landa Park: Its Springs and Its People" authored by Rosemarie Gregory and Arlene Seales, which will commemorate not only the history of this New Braunfels landmark but also provide funding for preservation and improvements on the park through its sales. The book is projected to be back from the press and available to the public by the end of 2014.

My project in current development is a narrative portrait of my parents, my intent is to portray them as they see each other and recreate the often joyous, occasionally tumultuous timeline of their life together, Naturally, this is such a personal piece of work but my hope is that any who see it would say, "Now that's how I'd like my parents portrayed for perpetuity, too."

Either way, the old bus is getting a makeover and will soon be ‘On The Road Again.’ Austin Restaurant Week founder Taylor Perkins and his entrepreneur business partner Michael "Stix" Tashnick won the sale auction, which went for over $80,000, for the 1983 Eagle tour bus and plan on turning it into a moving museum. Fans will now be able to charter the bus, which was once called "the Scout" and later "Me and Paul" after Nelson's 1985 album and song, for concerts, festivals and other events.

The new owners claim that the bus is in perfect running condition. Proceeds from the bus's rental will benefit Farm Aid, the charity Nelson cofounded with Neil Young and John Mellencamp to help out family farms.

If you’ve seen her red carpet photos lately, I’m sure you’ve noticed a much different looking Miranda Lambert. Her slimmed down figure has been gracing website photos and magazine covers on a regular basis. It seems to be all anyone is talking about regarding the country star these days.

Even though she has a new album, Platinum, set for release June 3 and a tour about to launch, it’s her new figure everyone seems most concerned with. But then again, it is kind of hard to ignore a 20-pound weight loss on an already petite frame. She is committed to sticking to this new path and living as healthy as possible while maintaining a very hectic schedule. need a getaway? Not to the same old place where everyone else is, because everyone goes there to escape?

And I bet it’s safe to say there a few things you would like to do… river tubing, relax by the pool, explore a city or two, check out the local music scene, shopping, something for the kids to do, and of course stay somewhere where you can reach everything with short drives.

Well, I know the perfect place for you!

Each room has its own porch with a sitting area which is a great way to watch the wildlife and they have a field that the kids can run and play games. We have seen deer, rabbits, and all types of birds including a nest of cardinals. Of course no bed-and-breakfast would be complete without breakfast, so the staff serves up a Texas style breakfast every morning!

It is just so charming and she sleeps on a wonderful day bed that also has a trundle bed for when she brings a friend. It also has a go-between door to the Bluebonnet Room for when you have a larger group staying together. But I have to say our family favorite is Granny’s Attic! The bathroom wall is constructed of an eclectic assortment of antique doors and the bathroom features an antique soaking tub with a hand held shower. There is a queen-size bed against one wall and a full-size bed under a dormer window. The second dormer niche has a collection of antiques that you would expect your grandmother to have hiding up there. If my Granny had had an attic, I imagine it would have been like this!

Because for the last 21-years the Miles’ (Ed Sr and Billie - owners, Ed - property manager, and George - tavern manager) have taken great care in making sure each room is not only decorated in a calm, inviting atmosphere, but that the beds are like lying on a cloud that drifts you off to a wonderful slumber… And they do! The Miles’ also ensure that the houses and rooms are kept as they would have been in their hay-days, so the outsides of the buildings as well as the hardware inside (door knobs, hinges) are all as close to original as they can be. They and the staff strive to make your stay as relaxing as possible from the heaven-sent beds (all the rooms have either a queen or a king size bed) to the stand-up showers or jetet me explain how centrally located tubs in many of the rooms, GHI is and I’m sure you’ll get a giggle JUNE 2014

We have made it a point to stay at GHI every chance we get, but I didn’t realize that we didn’t have to drive 10 miles to get to the Historic District of Gruene until just a few months ago when we thought we’d try a new road… Turns out, GHI is only 2.5 miles from the District. Boy, did I feel goofy! Anyway GHI is also just 16 miles from Canyon Lake, the Guadeloupe River is about a half mile down Highway 46 and there are tons of tubing companies! Did I mention this is New Braunfels – the home of Schlitterbahn?! Of course HIS is only 6 miles from the Outlet Mall in San Marcos, so where else do you want to stay during the holiday shopping season?

Ok,

now that you’ve cooled off and gotten your shopping fix, now we need some food and entertainment. You can head to any of the great restaurants as they are all so close but I like the Phoenix Saloon in downtown for some true Texas chili and Oma’s Haus on Highway 46 for authentic German cuisine – they even serve Wiener Schnitzel. For music and drinks we stay close too, in fact we don’t even drive… We head over to the Tavern in the Gruene which is on property and next to the pool! They have great

bartenders and they bring in awesome music from all over Texas and Ray Willey Hubbard hosts their Tuesday nights. At the end of the night it’s just a quick walk back to your room and that wonderful bed!

... it’s lunch time in downtown Corpus Christi and you’re thinking you only have 40 minutes because you need 10 minutes to get to and from the office. So where do you go?

Well, there are fast food places, but really, do you want that? Nope. There are a bunch of restaurants that serve the same old thing you’ve been eating forever, so no; you don’t want that either. How about some place new?

Some place that you wouldn’t expect? Maybe get a salad, a sandwich, or pizza? Mm, yeah, Pizza! hen let’s go to House of Rock! Yep, the same great place you head to for awesome shows, great drinks, and Beer School on Wednesdays. House of Rock! They now serve lunch and dinner into the late hours. Before you jump to the “oh, great bar food” conclusion, you have to look at the pictures! Mind you, they didn’t dress this up for us – this is how beautifully they serve it… always! And if you think it looks pretty, just wait until you get a taste!

Casey Lain (owner) and Adam Rios (Kitchen Manager and chef) have taken every step possible to make your meal the best - from hiring a great kitchen staff to hand slicing the mozzarella and vegetables to getting locally grown produce daily to making meatballs from scratch. The menu makes choosing your meal quick and easy and the weekly specials give you a chance to try new items before they are added. You can also order pizza by the slice and these slices are huge! e started our meal off with Little Smokes with Rooster Sauce which has a little kick to it and Meatballs with their in-house marinara. Believe it or not these are the first meatballs I’ve actually eaten more than one bite of in years. I have always been afraid, and usually proven true, that meatballs are just disguised meatloaf, but not so in this case. Adam’s staff makes the meatballs from scratch twice each day (and sometimes more) using their own recipe. The Little Smokes had that tasty little zip that makes them a favorite. Once you add the sauces you’ve got yourself a real treat! I can see why these are so popular.

The Meatball Sandwich was so pretty I wasn’t sure we should eat it, but that thought only lasted as long as it took to get my fork unwrapped from the napkin. The wonderfully creamy mozzarella and tomato slices were drizzled with a balsamic vinaigrette reduction that really brought the flavors together. The Fresh Spinach Salad with goat cheese and bacon was topped with sweet sundried cranberries rounding out the fresh flavors.

Again, the dishes were served so pretty that we didn’t want to dig in, however our growling stomachs won and we split them all! The Meatball Sub was amazing! Those great meatballs on a fresh hoagie roll with melted provolone and covered in marinara sauce. Absolutely tasty!

Then we tried the Italian Grinder… this was the table favorite! Thinly sliced genoa salami, pepperoni, and capicola on a hoagie roll with romaine lettuce, Roma tomatoes, pepperoncini and topped with an olive

oil and balsamic vinaigrette reduction. My favorite was the weekly sandwich special – the Italian Stallion. Sliced hand-cased Italian sausage on a hoagie roll smothered in marinara sauce. Even now it makes me hungry!

his is the point when our eyes were obviously too big for our stomachs, because they brought out the final piece de le resistance… The Supreme Me Pie! And of course it was a large, so we shared with friends in the bar and still took a couple slices home.

The crust, sauce, and five-cheese blend provide a flavorful base for the other toppings. Ours had pepperoni, green bell peppers, black olives, mushrooms, and red onions. According to my son the best test to pizza is how it tastes the next day (hot or cold) and the House of Rock’s Kitchen does a fantastic job!

y suggestion is that any time you are in downtown Corpus Christi and hungry head to the House of Rock! Oh, did I mention the Kitchen is open until midnight on the weekends and 11pm on the weekdays? And don’t forget about Happy Hour with drink and food specials! So really, there is no excuse to be hungry!

Thank you. Well, you know I spent some time there and listened to it while growing up. My dad used to listen to all kinds of different music, including Al Hurt and that kind of stuff, so it must have had some influence on me and it just kind of soaked into my songwriting. This band is kind of new with Howard Yeargan (accordion, harmonica, keyboards, and backup vocals) and Jay Warren (drums). Howard came in about a year ago and Jay started with us last December.

They are both very talented and picked up my style very fast.

Tell me about the album just released “Slim Bawb and the fabulous Stumpgrinders, Gristle and Guts”.

We cut it a few months back and it’s just us three playing. It’s basically how we sound live. I wrote the title track, Gristle and Guts, after my grandson was hit by a drunk driver. That song and some other events really got the album going.

I dug out some tunes from my California days and added my Cajun style. Howard has two songs on the album that he wrote. For the most part I write everything by myself, however I did cowrite Journey Man with a friend; we’d written the first two versus in 1978 and I finished it this year.

I think you have a very distinct writing and it’s not something you’d expect from anywhere but Louisiana.

Instruments, who custom built a bass pedal using video game buttons, so I have the prototype and a backup. I can play this easier than the organ pedals.

Well that leads right into your show… Sometime during the night you bring out an alligator skull to play bass for you. It’s a great bit, how did you come up with this idea?

When I was using the organ pedals I used to carry around a brick wrapped up in a rum bottle case, it looked like a miniature fiddle case, and I would bring it out and set it on a pedal, so I could go wander around the club playing. Since I had these buttons made I needed something much lighter and I had this ‘gator skull; he fits with what I do. You know a lot of performers take themselves very seriously and I try not to do that.

I want to make sure folks are having fun, so I bring the gator out.

And where can we see your show? Rumor has it that you could be coming to the coastal bend?

We play the last Sunday of each month at Gruene Hall and the first Sunday at Oma’s in Gruene. Howard is from New Braunfels so we’ve been playing there more, but you can catch me all around Austin. To keep my schedule full I also pedal steel with Jordan Minor and Tony Taylor as well as picking and singing in the "Chubby Knuckle Choir". I’m talking with a couple clubs in your area, but the best way to find out where I’ll be is on my website.

I’m a faux-Cajun. An honorary Coonass. (laughing) This is the first album I’ve had a three-piece on. The last two were just me and a drummer, because I play bass with my feet.

I wanted to ask you about that. How did you come up with this idea of playing bass with your feet?

Was it out of necessity or ingenuity?

A little of both. I have always stomped while playing and I play the pedal steel, so I thought I could try bass. with his own brand of Cajun sound and formed Slim Bawb and the Fabulous Stumpgrinders. Slim Bawb is a talented singer/songwriter and plays banjo, reso-guitar, mandolin, mandola, electric guitar, pedal steel guitar, and foot pedal bass. Actually, to better define his style of music you could say Cajun-country with some folk and funk twisted in.

Bawb (aka Bob Pearce) has been a professional musician for 40years and, although that isn’t a record by any means, this has been his only job and for 35 of those years he has only played his own music which isn’t something to brush off. In fact he recently released his nineteenth album. In Sacramento he lead the band Beer Dogs for 20 years. During the last weekend of each summer they hold a reunion concert at an outdoor venue near the Sacramento River.
