Now in its fourth year, the She Rocks Showcase will take place on Thursday, July 13 at

2017 She Rocks Showcase presents a unique opportunity for female artists of all styles and ages to perform in front of industry experts, media representatives, artists, fans and more during the Summer NAMM convention.
Artists are encouraged to submit their best material for an opportunity to perform at the showcase. All materials must be submitted by May 12. Showcase slot selections will be announced by May 31. Performers will also receive a free day pass to the NAMM Show on Saturday, July 15. A NAMM badge is not required to attend or participate in the Showcase.

Clear thinking is logical, it’s predictable, it’s unsurprising and it’s rational. It can also stall your train of thought, stifle your creativity and dam up your constant freeflowing stream of crazy genius ideas. When we’re in the throes of solving a problem, working on a scene, composing music, redesigning a website or editing a video, the outcome is NEVER clear. In fact, it’s usually foggy, and filled with indecision, hesitation and frustration. Important because the very last thing we want when we’re in the zone of creating, solving, inventing or attempting, is to be clear thinking. ROBERT CRAY & HI RHYTHM ROBERT CRAY & HI RHYTHM (JAY-VEE RECORDS) BY RICK J BOWEN After 40 years and 20 albums guitar man and certified soul man Robert Cray can do just about anything he wants, so for his latest record he chose to go to the source and dig deep into the roots of the music he loves. Cray traveled to Memphis with his friend, renowned Grammy Award winning producer and drummer Steve Jordan, to make a classic soul and R&B album with the surviving members of Hi Rhythm, the band that helped create that sound at legendary Royal Studios. The sessions feature Jordon on drums and Cray on guitar and vocals along with Rev. Charles Hodges (organ and piano) and Leroy “Flick” Hodges (bass), and Archie “Hubbie” Turner (keyboards), re-creating real funk and certified soul in the studio that is set inside an old theater and has remained unchanged since Al Green cut all those classics for Hi Records 50years ago. The 11 song set includes three new tunes written by Cray and eight remakes of beloved but not well known tunes by well-known writers. The album opens with Jordon driving a version of Bill Withers’ “The Same Love That Made Me Laugh” so fat and fleshed out with B3 and strings sounding as if it was originally from an old 70’s recording until Cray’s signature piercing guitar tone joins the mix. Powerful tribute is paid to Memphis soul legend O.V. Wright on the horn-driven version of “You Must Believe in Yourself.” Cray then reinvents “I Don’t Care,” the first of two tunes written by Sir Mac Rice, known for writing “Mustang Sally,’ giving them his west coast blues treatment of sleek tenor vocals, four on the floor funk and milking the chorus hook for all it’s worth. Cray chose two Tony Joe White songs for the album, and coaxed White to come up from Nashville to sit in. First up is the soul-searching ballad “Aspen, Colorado,” the other is the swirling extended jam “Don’t Steal My Love,” with Jordon digging deep into the groove while the guitars trade around. Cray’s first two original tunes sit in the middle of the set starting with “Just How Low,” a timely grinding political diatribe calling out the man “who wants to build a wall and sit up in his tower,” followed by the more subdued soul rhumba love song “You Had My Heart.” Curiously Cray splits the 12/8 Rhythm and Blues classic “I’m With You,” from Doo-Wop group The 5 Royales into parts one and two, fading in and out around a vamp for the glorious never ending guitar solo, as if to say, just because he couldn’t get enough of it he didn’t want to make us sit through six plus minutes of joyous self-indulgence. DOAK SNEAD CATALOGUE (HEAR-SAY RECORDS) BY STEVE GOLGSTEIN Doak Snead has certainly earned a dignified spot among the long list of Texas singer/ songwriters. He has gained lots of attention for his own brand of Progressive Country music, a.k.a. Redneck Rock over the years. With CATALOGUE, Doak looks back with a personal compilation of 14 songs recorded between 1991-2009. The collection consists of previously unreleased recordings, demo sessions from his days at Reba McEntire’s Starstruck publishing, and his own favorites. They are all done in Doak’s sparse, understated manner. His voice is a little bit Guy Clark meets Robert Earl Keen at Townes Van Zandt’s house, but the songs are uniquely his own. It’s interesting to see his writing skill progress and change over the course of time. “Already Missing You” is a loving tribute to his soon-to-be wife, Kelley. The ballad “Lonely” was written in Nashville while Doak worked as a tour guide at RCA. You can almost smell the beer and sawdust on the redneck rocker, “Mama’s Lonesome Hideaway.” “Hooray for True, True Believers” is an uplifting tune about hope and having faith in yourself. “Sister Rosa and Her Man” pays homage to a spiritual woman who has found contentment with the only love she ever needed to know. “I Propose a Toast to You” takes an upbeat trip down memory lane with good friends. “1717 Saginaw Street” is another nostalgic look back at a house that was more than just a home. Doak sings about his own personal love voyage on “Another Magdalene.” “Beneath the Friday Night Lights” is Doak’s own account of small town high school football that puts you right there. It’s easy to see why these songs hold a special place in Doak Snead’s musical heart. CATALOGUE is filled with personal stories of love, life and spirituality, and performed with a sincerity that grabs you on the first track and doesn’t let go. DEAD SOLDIERS THE GREAT EMPTINESS (AMERICAN GRAPEFRUIT) BY ROB DICKENS From Memphis Tennessee Dead Soldiers Reveal The Great Emptiness. I would love to see them strut their stuff live. Memphis Tennessee band Dead Soldiers released their second album The Great Emptiness (released on American Grapefruit) March 31 2017. Since 2011 the band has been writing and performing, boasting a core group Michael Jasud (Lead Vocals/Guitar), Benjamin Aviotti (Vocals/Banjo/Guitar), Clay Qualls (Vocals/Bass/Mandolin), Krista Wroten-Combest (Vocals/ Violin/Keys), Nathan Raab (Guitar/Mandolin/Bass/Keys), and Paul Gilliam (Drums). Recent showings at SXSW (South-By-Southwest) in Austin and Memphis' own Beale Street Festival continue the momentum for this energetic band with much promise. The Great Emptiness opens with the compelling, rolling 'When I Die, such a passionate statement. 'White Collar Blues' and 'Teddy Bears' exhibit ramshackle rawness. 'Old Time Religion' provides crowing harmonies while 'Still Climbing The Mountain' and 'Georgia Tann' show a tender side, the former building to an emotional crescendo. 'A Love Song' could have been recorded in a bar given its brassy earthiness. 'The Smartest Man In The World' contains some sharp insights and a gloriously full sound. There are urgent warnings a-plenty in 'Prophets of Doom' (see clip below), the second single from the collection. The closing 'Cheap Magic' leaves us with a strong image of The Great Emptiness. Dead Soldiers are known to enlist an array of personnel from the Memphis music scene whenever there is space on the stage or the studio, and the collaborative, fun approach is one of the triumphs of this record. I have been to Memphis a few times and reveled in the history of this amazing city. The Rolling Stones created the blueprint for the sex, drugs, and rock and roll life of a rock star. Blues aficionado and guitar/harmonica player Brian Jones formed the band in 1962 with his mates; Mick Jagger on vocals, Keith Richards on lead guitar, Charlie Watts on drums, Ian Stewart on piano, and Bill Wyman on bass. (Ian Stewart suffered a fatal heart attack in 1985 at age 47.) They rode the first wave of the British invasion to the top of the charts and were in friendly competition with The Beatles for the top spot on the charts throughout the 1960’s. The Beatles recorded their last album in 1969, while The Stones most recent studio album came out in December 2016. By the time they recorded “Beggars Banquet” (1968), Brian’s drug abuse was out of control. When he wasn’t passed out at a recording session, he played so poorly that they’d switch off his amplifier without him even realizing it. He was ousted in June 1969 prior to an American tour, and within a month was found dead in his swimming pool. He was replaced by 20 year old Mick Taylor who had turned heads playing with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. Taylor debuted with the Stones on “Let It Bleed” (1969), an album that had very minimal contribution from Jones on only two songs. “Sticky Fingers” is the Stones’ ninth album and the first that features Taylor on every track. Recording began in 1969 at Muscle
Shoals Sound Studio in Alabama and was completed on their own mobile recording facility in London. The album is as famous for its notorious art work as it is for the outstanding music. Conceived by pop-artist Andy Warhol, the suggestive cover has a man in blue jeans, complete with a working zipper. When unzipped and opened up, a matching pose of the guy in tighty-whities appears. This is also the first album on their new Rolling Stones Records label, and the first to feature the iconic tongue and lips logo that they still use. The music stands with the best in their long history. With help from folks like Ry Cooder, Billy Preston, Nicky Hopkins, and Bobby Keys, they rose to the occasion with the force of a freight train. Not much can compare to “Brown Sugar,” “Wild Horses,” “You Got to Move,” “Bitch,” “Dead Flowers,” and the driving “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking,” which is the recommended track. But, on second thought, just play the whole album.
“Rock ‘n’ Roll” was John Lennon’s 6th solo album, and his last before putting his career on hold for five years. It’s almost as well known for the intrigue, drama and lawsuits connected with it, as it is for being a tribute to rock and roll by one of its own giants. It all started when John Lennon lifted part of a line from Chuck Berry’s “You Can’t Catch Me” for The Beatles’ “Come Together.” The owner of the line, and the song, was Morris Levy who sued. As part of the settlement, John gladly agreed to record an album of some of his favorite oldies, including three other Levy owned songs. John corralled Phil Spector to produce and they were off and running to California. This all coincided with the beginning of John Lennon’s infamous “lost weekend.” Unbeknownst to everyone, Spector had been taking the master tapes home, then wound up in a coma after a near-fatal car crash. Not knowing where the efforts of his labors were, Lennon completed work on another album, “Walls And Bridges.” The tapes were eventually returned, but
Levy was upset that another album was released before the one with his songs and threatened to sue again. John calmed him down and to show good faith, gave him some rough tapes of some of the songs, which Levy quickly released as a mail order only John Lennon record. It was on the market for three days before Lennon and Apple Records got an injunction. This was followed by the rush release of this album, another lawsuit from Levy, and a successful counter suit from Lennon and Capitol Records. As for the music, John pretty much stayed true to the originals, but also stamped it with his own, unmistakable touch. Even with a reggae beat, it’s still “Do You Want To Dance.” Every musician that got wind of this wanted in on it; Leon Russell, Klaus Voorman, Bobby Keys, Jim Keltner, to name just four. It sounds like everyone is having a blast. The results are fun rockers like “Be-Bop-A-Lula” and “Boney Maronie.” Add a couple Chuck Berry covers, a couple Little Richard, and it’s the real thing! The cover photograph by Jurgen Vollmer, a friend from The Beatles’ earliest days in Hamburg, Germany, is a fitting nod to the past with 20 year old John Lennon and the blurred images of George Harrison, Stuart Sutcliffe, and Paul McCartney. If you only sample one track, try “Peggy Sue.” The Buddy Holly classic has a couple interesting twists of Lennon.

Multi-Medium Artist Continued from Page 11 and I thought, “Hey I think I can do this.” So, that's really how I started. I found that I don't need to buy those specific squares of glass. I get my own glass sheets and break it into the shapes I want. And I don't just use glass from the art supply stores, I go to glass shops and get their scraps and I also go looking for it with my grandkids and husband. We go down by the railroad tracks or to old buildings. In fact, when the kids come over that's what they ask to do. Go look for glass. You can find broken glass all over the place! Some of it can be real thick and some is very colorful, so I try to include some of that old glass in every mosaic. Well, that's an awesome way to reuse and I don't think I would have ever thought of going to get glass like that. What kind of protection do you have to wear or use when you’re working with the glass? Well, I'm pretty bad about that. In fact, my mom just bought me a couple pair of neoprene gloves. Those are the best I’ve found because they have a grip on them and they fit tightly. Gloves have to be tight fitting or they slide and are too hard to use. I get cut all the time, so I really do need to remind myself to keep the gloves, but I find myself pulling my glove off and going about arranging that way. Of course, nothing two or three bandages can’t cover, but that’s not enough to discourage me, that's for sure! What do you use to set your glass?
When I create art, I strive to portray a momentary glimpse of fleeting events that capture the spirit of my subject.
The mosaics are on wood. I glue the glass down first and then I grout it. In your opinion, what is the best part of art? You know, I don't just teach the kids at school; every time the grandkids come over, they all want to work on is art with me; which thrills me to death that they do, even if they leave a big mess for me to clean up! The way I look at Art is that when I'm gone my art will live on. And hopefully my grandkids will teach it to their kids and so on down. My husband passed away in December and I'll tell you if I didn't have art I think I probably would have gone crazy. It's a good way to express yourself and to relieve stress or get your feelings out. And I'll tell you, you’ll forget about everything! I can't tell you how many times my husband would come in asking if I was going to get supper for him, because I've been out there working on stuff and time just slipped by.

Ramón Clavería, President of CAMCo, musician, composer, singer, performed for 48 years before retiring. Now he and his wife Cathy (VP of CAMCo) are dedicating their time to launching musical careers for new talent. I chatted with Ray to find out more. When did your career start? I began my musical career in Miami, FL at the age of 12 performing on the weekends at local teen dances. At 15 I started and was the lead vocalist for the teen vocal group, Ray and The Quarternotes. Our first single record, You'll Always Be Mine and Rose, was released on the "Scott" record label in

1958; I was 16 at that time. I have performed with the Quarternotes throughout the USA, Canada, and the Caribbean, sharing the stage with such greats as Johnny Rivers, Joey Dee and The Starlighters, Little Anthony and The Imperials, The Platters etc. How did you did you decide to open a recording studio? I retired from the music industry in 1998 and in 2010 my wife, Cathy, and I decided we would open a recording studio in Corpus Christi. Henry Stone,
the president of Marlin Record Corp., was instrumental in getting me into the music business and now it is time for Ray to pass it on. Tell me about your current talent search and what you have to offer to young/up-coming singers and musicians? Cuban American Music Company, Inc. (CAMCo) opened with the idea that we would help new talent fulfill their dreams. We are currently holding auditions for teen vocalist male and female. The chosen will receive a recording contract through CAMCo Records. What’s the best way to contact you for more information and to set up an audition? Phone calls are always the best for us and you can always check our website too! The Carlos Brothers were the first group I knew of getting a recording contract. How did you hear about Joshua and Daniel? I happen to work with their father at the hospital. In a conversation with Garry I found out that the boys played with a band, so I went to hear them at the mall. The boys are great musicians and I signed them to the label. Have Joshua and Daniel commented on their experience? They had a great time recording, but they have said that it was not as easy as they thought it would be. They have enjoyed all the steps in getting their music out from making the video to recording to performing to an audience. What’s next for the Carlos Brothers? And that's one of my main rules: that I need to be excited about going up on that stage. Because, how can I go up on stage and ask people for their money and to go through the things they have to for a live show, if I’m not going up there to pull them in? It's kind of a simple way to look at it but really it's true.

2013 Rock n Roll Hall of Fame inductee will bring The Ann Wilson of Heart tour to Corpus Christi on June 3rd – this is the first time back for her since March 5 1984! She also has shows in Dallas, San Antonio, and Houston. I recently talked with Ann about her new music, touring, and the future.

We’ve put two EPs out with two new originals and two covers that are live cuts on each. On the tour I perform all the new original songs. time. Well, I hope that the message of these songs and the message that I send by being a female person, who started in music in an era where women were completely valueless as people. That’s a message that I’ve carried, from the 70’s through the 80’s and beyond, by just not taking no, showing up and doing what I’m supposed to do, and keeping my integrity and dignity. And I hope that this message comes through to any person watching. And that's really what's important. The messages of these songs are human and uplifting. It's about being a person, and compassion, and what could happen if you really try to understand and be present in the world.
I imagine you’re a songwriter
that is constantly writing?
Well,
yes and no; thinking about writing and writing are two different things. Right now I have a lot of ideas and I'm just at the point where I get out the paper and pen, because I'm old school and I like to write things down in a notebook. And I'm at that point right now.
I saw that your schedule has
about 60 dates, which is a pretty good sized tour. What does next year look like for you? Yep, we're going to finish out the year with the Ann Wilson Of Heart tour and I don't know what 2018 is going to bring, but I do know it will be more shows. I'm not planning too far ahead because I don't want to get locked into the same situation where you have to be somewhere for a deadline and not being able to take the time to be creative.

think Lucinda Williams. She's a real favorite of mine and I think she's got something special. The way she writes her lyrics, her voice, the way she seems completely raw, real. She's got a real sound. She's a lone wolf; you don't see her doing duets with a lot of people. I think she'd be the person I'd like to sing with.
Do
you have any advice for up-and-comers? Yeah, I do. I think whether you’re out on stage, a singersongwriter, or just working out in the garage the important thing to remember is that it needs to be from the inside out. You can't decide on what you're going to buy or what house you want to live in if you don’t fixate on the music first. You have to make sure that the music is you, it's what you want to say, and that it's good. Above all, it needs to be good and fresh. You can't plan first; you have to fixate on the music and the rest will

onnor Ray Music has announced the signing of Houston-based singer/guitarist The Mighty Orq, and will release the 2016 International Blues Challenge finalist’s label debut, Love in a Hurricane, on May 20. Recorded at Houston’s legendary Sugar Hill Studios and produced by The Mighty Orq and Josh Applebee, Love in a Hurricane features his regular touring band: The Mighty Orq (vocals, electric, acoustic, resonator, cigar box and Weissenborn guitars); Jimmy Rose (drums, percussion, mandolin); Barry Seelen (organ, piano, accordion); and Terry Dry (bass). “ 'm particularly excited about the new album because I've finally been able to combine all the elements of my various performance styles in one place,” Orq says about the new Love in a Hurricane. “There are rockers, singersongwriter tunes, solo acoustic and cigar box songs, as well as southern rock, gospel and blues. singer-songwriter Dalton Domino has debuted two new tracks from his album Corners, out on Lightning Rod Records. One Country premiered the title track, a co-write with country artist Jack Ingram that deals with Domino's personal struggles with alcohol.
"This song was a confessional for me and a realization of my past," Domino tells One Country. "I wrote 'Corners' at a period of time in my life where I had a brief pause in hating myself for the things I did in my past. I realized right then and there I didn't have to be defined by it. As well as, it's not up to anyone but yourself to make that change. It's a song that was a big deal for me personally to write. There was a lot of baggage that disappeared when I was done with it. It was the first step I took in my journey to fix who I was."

OWEN SHELLY FUNDRAISER FOR LUNG TRANSPLANT EXPENSES UPDATE… Owen is now 9-months posttransplant and we thought it would be appropriate to share how thankful we are for Owen’s continued improvement following his double-lung transplant on July 28, 2016. Unfortunately, he has experience a number of setbacks including two bronchoscopies that resulted in collapsed lungs (pneumo-thorax) and the development of a bacterial infection. Each episode has been quite painful and required a week’s stay in the hospital, insertion of chest tubes, and additional medications. Owen is now working on regaining his strength as well as maintaining healthy and positive. Currently, Owen has regular appointments, weekly blood tests and is being monitored by his medical team. He and his wife Lindsey, and their three children will remain in San Antonio, Texas, so he can be in close proximity to the lung transplant and pulmonary health professionals. We all appreciate your friendship, support and continued prayers for Owen and his family. We are blessed that Owen’s quality of life has significantly improved and he is able to be home with his family. Thank you for supporting and donating to Owen Shelly’s fundraiser.
