Waves of Success

all the best of the worst. Outstanding musicianship combined with creative flair and style makes for an evening of pure energy and entertainment.

Celebrating 27 Years The Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas (HWNT) is celebrating nearly three decades of advancing women in public, corporate and civic life with its “Waves of Success” 27th Annual State Conference at the Omni Bayfront Hotel in Corpus Christi on October 25-27, 2013. Dr. Mary Jane Garza is the organization’s first state chair from Corpus Christi since the organization’s start 27 years ago. Three Corpus Christi women also sit on the organization’s Board of Directors. Established in 1987, HWNT is an Austin-based 501(c) (3) non-profit organization that seeks to advance the educational, cultural, social, legal and economic well-being of women through a broader awareness of their role in society, business and family. “Women have been instrumental in bringing change in every aspect of our country’s success,” Dr. Garza stated, “And this conference will showcase the successes of women in public, corporate, and civic life.” Among the topics to be discussed are making life transitions, marketing, financial smarts, healthcare, building collaborative partnerships, social media and self-defense. There will be a Trailblazer Reception, a Las Estrellas Luncheon, prime rib dinner, a salsa night and much more. Confirmed speakers for the “Waves of Success” conference include: Corpus Christi native Sarah R. Saldaña, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas. In September 2011, Saldaña became the first Latina U.S. Attorney in Texas. She leads four staffed offices with nearly 220 employees, including approximately 100 attorneys. The Northern District of Texas spans 100 counties and approximately 95,000 square miles. Most recently she served as the Deputy Criminal Chief in charge of the District’s Fraud and Public Corruption section, leading the successful prosecution of the Dallas City Hall public corruption case. Judith Canales: On April 30, 2012, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced the appointment of Ms. Canales as Acting Deputy Under Secretary for USDA Rural Development. In 1996, Former President Bill Clinton appointed Canales as Deputy State Director for Texas Rural Development. She also has worked as the Acting Associate Administrator for Rural Business and Cooperative Service in Washington, D.C. She served as the Legislative Representative for the Department of Housing and Urban Development. She also served as the Executive Director of the International Hispanic Network, a national membership organization of Hispanic city managers, which promotes professional excellence among Hispanic executives and public managers in local government. Most recently, Agriculture Secretary Vilsack appointed Judith Canales as the new State Executive Director for the USDA Texas Farm Service Agency. Teresa Niño: In April 2011, Ms. Niño was selected to lead the newly created Office of Public Engagement within Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. In this current role, she oversees the Medicare Ombudsman's Group, Tribal Affairs, Emergency Preparedness and Response, and the Partner Relations Group. Yolanda Garcia Olivarez: In August 2009, Yolanda Garcia-Olivarez was appointed Regional Administrator for SBA’s Region VI in August 2009. As Regional Administrator, Olivarez is responsible for the delivery of the agency’s programs in Region VI, which is headquartered in Dallas and includes Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma. The SBA helps Americans start, build, and grow businesses. Register before October 4, 2013 for $115/members or $150/non-members. For registration information visit www.hwnt.org. Sponsorships are still available. 361 537-1313

“Success is a lousy teacher. It seduces smart people into thinking they can't lose.” —Bill Gates

Smart people are dumb J. Michael Dolan (1:13) They’re dumb at playing small. They’re dumb at being afraid to share their truth. They’re dumb at discussing petty showbiz gossip, even dumber at spreading it. They’re mostly dumb at demanding their way and very dumb at needing to prove they're right. They’re dumb at giving up AND giving in, and they’re way too dumb to think of themselves as being smart. Look, I’m working on not being judgmental, and I try not to discriminate, and I call myself on it every time I talk down on somebody. But the truth remains, I love hanging out with smart people. I love walking away from a long conversation, blown away by somebody’s smart ideas. I enjoy grappling with deeper issues, with smart people who aren’t afraid to grapple with deeper issues. I even love the swagger of smart people, the way they glide into a room with the nonchalant confidence of a prima ballerina. And I enjoy regular weekly conversations with smart, foolhardy artists & treps who have absolutely ridiculous, utterly impossible huge goals and are nevertheless determined to achieve them. Smart people, who are not afraid to go deep, and get to the real truth that confronts their lives, tests their relationships, and stalls their careers. I also love it

when smart people express genuine humility and play themselves down, giving others the upper hand, because it’s the smart thing to do. And I love reading smart books by smart authors, like Gladwell, Pressfield, Godin, Bruce Lipton, Deepak Chopra, Tom Cambell, Ray Kurzwiel, David Hawkins, and Elizabeth Gilbert. Of course I learn something from everyone I encounter—of course I do! But often my breath is taken away by a smart film director or a brilliantly written screenplay, or the genius lyrics and melody of a great composer, or a really intelligent band manager, or the phrasing of great poetry, or even the coding of a genius programmer. I even respect & admire the brilliance of a smart basketball coach, like Phil Jackson. Now there’s a really smart guy! Wanna learn how to market your music, publish your book, sell your script, turn your big corp into a global one, or incorporate the benefits of meditation into your daily business? Then read his new book “Eleven Rings.” Truth is, the more I hang out and interact with smarter people than me the more my awareness expands. The more I humble myself in the presence of smarter people than me, the more my level of consciousness rises. And the more I read smarter people than me, the more I realize how far I still need to go. Truth is, I just like playing racquetball with someone better than me.

To continue our discussion from last month, I’ll have to pull an old sports analogy to make the point. My dad always said, “son, in football, the key to winning is to keep the game in front of you. Well, to have successful recording projects you must do the same. Structure is the key to creating clarity between producer, engineer and artist. But most don’t know how to structure this on paper. So let’s list the points that matter.

I’ll post a spread sheet that covers these ideas in the next couple of weeks. You’ll be able to find it under, “The Paper Trail” heading on our websites at contactcreate.com and criticalsul.com. Stay tuned as we add to these documents and come at them from the artist standpoint in the next article!

A brilliant medical engineer and veteran astronaut are on a seemingly routine spacewalk when disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving them completely alone, tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. Any chance for rescue may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.

BOOTH

1) Basic information – Name, genre, label, management, producer and contact information. This helps to show that you want to get a handle on who they are. 2) Budget – break down the sessions by segment: tracking, overdub, editing, mixing, mastering. Estimate the hours per segment by multiplying the day rate x the number of days and include how many songs will be worked on. 3) Create a joint calendar on Google or something like that and set a recording schedule with start and end times. You act as the admin and are the only one who can edit the doc. This allows the basic structure to exist in plain sight for all to access whenever they like. 4) Be clear about what happens each day and what the cost is to the client. You can use this to show where your contribution is saving them money (and why asking for more sacrifice from you would be an insult), where they are being efficient or not and lastly, what the cost of adding time would be and why it would or would not be in the projects interest to do so. 5) Get half of the total agreed when you book the time. Get half of the balance when you go to mix down and get the balance when you hand over the masters. The schedule will mean more when they paid for the highlighted days that appear on the calendar. Failing to meet the dates means money out of their pocket…. …. hell of motivator for the vast majority I say!

STEAM: The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell, your 4th double studio album, was released in a time where bands have a hard time selling records. Staring at those declining industry numbers what was the thought behind a double album? FFDP: The thought came from the fact that we basically took a portable recording studio out with us on tour and in our down time we found ourselves there, creating new music and trying out different sounds. When we came off the tour we found we had a stock pile of material ready to be brought into a studio for recording. We found the flow went well and after about twenty two or twenty three songs we realized that a double album was inevitable. STEAM: We love the anime styling of your albums and poster artwork. How involved is the band in the creation of those pieces? FFDP: Our artist has actually created artwork for both the Spawn and Batman comics so he is extremely talented and focus’s the creative direction based on the sound of each new album we put out. We have some input but it’s really his vision. STEAM: Hailing from Las Vegas, a city whose glitz and glamour can seem saturating at points, was it difficult to find your place out there in the city of sin where ‘What Happens in Vegas Stays in Vegas’? FFDP: There’s an okay music seen there. We actually moved there after being signed so we had our foot in the door already to some extent. There’s quite a thriving music scene there, like most cities you travel with a lot of talented people looking to get their break. It can be tough sometimes to appeal to crowds more interested in the flash of a slot machine than the lights of a stage but as it is a highly traversed town, dedicated musicians can find success. STEAM: Why the move from Los Angeles? FFDP: It’s overcrowded. So many people make the

SOUTH TEXAS UNDERGROUND FILM FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL STUFF

Words by Rachel Mills, STEAM Mag.

Already going through 48 Hour and Seven Day Film contest withdrawals? Put down that ticket to the latest Hollywood box office dross, it won’t satisfy you. What you need is a film festival glutted with independent films from all over the world.

kilter by her apparently possessed apartment, replete with talking fruits, vegetables, and an evil glazed ham.

The South Texas Underground Film Festival (STUFF) is a 4day international film, music, and visual art festival. Starting Thursday, October 3rd more than 100 films will be screened from over 20 countries including: Australia, Canada, Egypt, India, Iran, Italy, Norway, Scotland, Sweden, Serbia, Ukraine, and the United States.

The film, which was eight years in the making, is a mix of live-action and stop -motion photography. Kim and Lori Anne Smithey star as the tormented lovers and Victoria Blake and Stefan Griswold provide voices for additional characters.

Film selections include features, shorts, and animations spanning genres from horror and comedy to experimental and documentaries. There is also a showcase devoted to Texas filmmakers who, along with many of the US filmmakers, will be attendance for the event. The award-winning film, “I Love You, Apple, I Love You, Orange,” written and directed by Horam Kim, is one of the feature-length I LOVE YOU APPLE, films in the festival. “The I LOVE YOU ORANGE inspiration for the film came from a short story that I wrote a long time ago about a talking studio apartment,” said Kim.

Although Kim has won several awards for his short films, this is his first feature-length film. “I Love You, Apple, I Love You, Orange” will be shown on Friday, October 4th at 3:30pm at the American Bank Center, Harbor View room.

What seems like a simple story about a lonely woman struggling to reconcile a previous romantic relationship is thrown off-

McFernin set out to film the rally itself and had sent several families flip cameras to document their travels to the march. Later, when reviewing the footage, she realized that the real story was actually within the individuals, instead of the main event. “Their stories are the reason we march,” stated McFernin.

Another award-winning film featured in this year’s festival is the documentary, “March On,” directed by Laura McFernin. The film tells the stories of five families who felt the need to take off work, travel across the country, and attend the October 11, 2009 National Equality March in Washington, DC.

“March On” Sunday, October 6th at 1:15pm @ the American Bank Center Harbor View room

Although the lack of film crew experience resulted in some “shaky hands and unstable shots”, McFernin was ecstatic with the results. The hours of film truly conveyed the individual and their stories. “The camera was an extension of their story,” said McFernin, “through their unique stories, I hope that people will want to take action and March On!” “March On” will be shown on Sunday, October 6th at 1:15pm at the American Bank Center Harbor View room. Another unique story is the vampire-cannibal romantic-comedy short film, “Call Me Crazy.” The film, directed by Adam Orton, has all the basic love story components: boy meets girl, they fall in love, boy

loses girl, boy must overcome obstacles and confront darkness within himself to win girl back. One small difference – they meet in home for troubled youths because she murdered her boyfriend, drank his blood and tweeted about it and he killed his girlfriend and cooked her in a Crockpot for Sunday dinner. “At the core [this] is a love story…about two people searching for a part of them that is missing,” said Beau Batterson, writer and producer. Loosely based on true events (the real vampire and canni-

bal are happily married and living in a psychiatric hospital in Sweden), the story touches on overarching themes such as love and death. “There is enough blood and gore to satisfy the horror enthusiasts without turning off the romance fans,” stated Batterson.

Chris Pagnozzi and Jessica Denney star as (wo)man eating Isaac and blood-thirsty Michelle. Additional roles are played by Sean Bolger, Marla Rodriguez, and Eric Akeson.

Additional festival activities will include music showcases, mini-conferences, discussion panels, after-parties/mixers/ tea parties, and a midnight bike ride following the 10:30pm screening of “Breakin LA.”

Texas Country is an all-time favorite of mine. Not only because I’m born and raised, but because a lot of the time it hits home with me! Mark McKinney is no different. A family man, Austinite, and Texas Country man who sings his way into our hearts with “The River Song” that is basically written for everyone who has ever floated a river. He has worked on a new CD for us called “Standing My Ground” that will be available at iTunes October 1, 2013 or pick up a copy at live shows after October 15th. Mark says the inspiration for his diverse array of country music is, “Life. Life’s a journey and you kind of take stuff from different aspects of your life, different stuff you’ve done, watching things your friends go through and traveling and a little bit of all.” “I don’t ever like to try to rewrite the same kind ’a song or the same kind ’a vibe over and over. That’s probably one reason why my music is pretty diverse. Sometimes I’m in the mood to write something real mellow, and other times in the mood to write something maybe a little more rockin’, and sometimes I want to write a heartbreak song and then I want to write something about a good time or a drinkin’ song. So I’m kind ‘a back and forth all over the place in that. “ “I’ve always wanted to keep my music diverse enough to where my fans don’t know what I’m going to do next.” Not only in his music, but in life, Mark likes to keep it real and is really down to earth. He has used www.txmusic project.com to help get his music out there with a skit offering out executive producer Words by - spots for donations, on his new cd, as well Amber Phelps, as showed off some of his acting skills. STEAM Mag. He loves to vine and tweet and keep up with all the social network avenues as well as teach his two children from home. His son is his #1 critic and helps Mark keep up with what’s cool and plays the fiddle, while his daughter loves everything her daddy does and plays piano. Mark’s children inspire him, as any father’s children do, and so much so that they both have an intro cameo in “Pretty Little Mess” on his album “Standing My Ground”.

Mark and his brother, Eric, who runs Wonderland Studios, had played in a band together throughout middle school and high school and pursued music since 1998. They signed with Virgin Records Nashville under Mark McKinney and the Cosmic Cowboys. Unfortunately for Mark, this record never came out as around that time Virgin Records became Capitol Records, and let them go. Mark never gave up his dream. He kept writing and started back up around 2007 putting out his first solo album and has been writing and sharing his music ever since. Wonderland Studios was a project that Mark’s older brother, Eric and he, had started part time and Eric ended up buying out Mark’s part so that Mark could pursue his music. This new album is the first that Mark has self-produced and partnered up with his brother on. Living just minutes from Wonderland Studios and in Austin, a live music Capitol as it is, Mark has traveled to many other fantastic places. One such place being France, where he was awarded the “Live Performance of the Year” while opening for Kevin Fowler. Mark says, “Oh, it was so cool! Fowler’s an old buddy of mine. When I first moved down to Austin we had met years ago, so we knew each other and when I started doing this Texas Country thing full time, he put me on a bunch of tour dates with him. And then we got the offer to play the Equiblues Festival in France in 2008 and they had Fowler headline on Saturday and me headline on Friday and it’s really cool. It’s like this whole western rodeo style thing with country music fans, in the middle of the mountains of south France. They toured us around and showed us castles and a bunch of history and fed us and gave us great wine.” What an amazing experience for an up and coming to be honored with such an award. He’d love to play Italy or Red Rocks in Boulder, CO. amphitheater one day. So all you up and around there, look out! Being to France and accomplishing this major award, doesn’t go to Mark’s head. He is still a laid back man of the house and

With their third release in as many years, the Stacy Jones Band sounds more confident, ballsier and sounding like they are having one hell of a good time recording "No Need to Spell It Out." The Stacy Jones Band is a four piece which calls the Pacific Northwest home. They are a talented bunch of players and have been honored with the 2010 Best Female Vocalist and 2009 Best New Band awards from the Washington Blues Society, so they have a lot to live up to with their latest release, and they don’t disappoint.

long To Me” would go down with a cold one in a dirty juke joint, while “Do What You Wanna” is a sassy hip shaker for all to enjoy. Above all else, “Heavy Water” and “Think I Feel Like Leavin'” are two of the best songs the Stacy Jones Band has ever written. “Heavy Water” is a sexy smoldering jam with haunting harmonica in the background, and it builds to a powerful chorus. “Think I Feel Like Leavin'” is a throwback blues jam you might have heard coming out of the small bars of Mississippi in the 1940s. It’s a pleasure to watch a band grow through their records, and Stacy Jones Band has certainly done just that. No Need to Spell It Out shows that this quartet has matured to be one of the best blues/ soul/rock bands not only in the Northwest, but the entire country. ** The Stacy Jones Band will be on tour winter of 2014. Watch our event calendar for listing dates!

With 12 original new songs, the Stacy Jones Band – Stacy Jones (vocals, harmonica, keyboards, acoustic guitar); Tom Jones (bass, vocals); Jeff Menteer (guitar, vocals); and Rick Bowen (drums, vocals) – rip right into it with the opening track “No Matter What.” With Stacy Jones killer harmonica playing over the band’s steady groove, you are in for a roadhousestyle good time. Jones’ vocals are bright, powerful (and thankfully not buried in the mix), because she can wail her heart out – channeling her inner Etta James, Janis Joplin and Beth Hart. The fact that she is also a very skilled harmonica player and keyboardist makes this front woman a force that can hold her own. On stage is where these new tracks are meant to be played. “You Be-

Throughout human history, the Bat has been a creature of much interest and has generated many sets of beliefs among all peoples of the world. The Maya saw it as an important intermediary between the earth and the sky, living in caves yet with the magical gift of flight; it also was viewed as able to mediate between the living and the dead and viewed with powers of fertility and sexuality. As messengers between the worlds, the Bat was associated with human sacrifice, linking this practice of the spilling of human blood with the Lords of the Underworld.

This image shows the god, Chaac, who was associated with life-giving rain and water. He was of tremendous importance to the Maya whose livelihood was dependent on agriculture and even moreso because of the lack of rivers in the Yucatan peninsula. The principle sources of water for the Maya were cenotes: large, spring-fed pools or sink-holes in the limestone rock formations found in that region. He was usually pictured as an old man, and he was associated with frogs and toads whose habitat was aquatic. His large, curved nose embodied the lightning bolt. In Mayan mythology, he inhabited caves and cenotes which were also believed to be gateways to the spirit world. He had four manifestations that were associated with the cardinal directions and four colors: Black for the West, White for the North, Yellow for the South, and here he is shown as the Red Chaac of the East.

This figure in ancient Mayan lore is associated with the sun, and his name is sometimes translated as “Sun-Eyed. For this reason, he has large square eyes, an aquiline nose, and here he is shown seated viewing the Earth on a magic mirror from his celestial perspective. He was also considered by some to be an aspect of the supreme deity, Itzamna, who was said to descend to Earth when the sun was at his zenith during midday to consume the offerings of the faithful. According to some legends of the Lacandon tribe of Chiapas, Kinich will descend from the sky and destroy the world and have his jaguars consume mankind.

The Crocodile played an important role in the Mesoamerican worldview. Mainly associated with fertility, this was an aquatic creature that was believed to bring live-giving rain. In Mesoamerica, there is a dry season and a rainy season, and if the rains did not come, then the crops failed and the people starved. As a creature of the water that also walked on land, this divinity was seen as an intermediary between the land and water. In this dual role, the Crocodile was a principal metaphor for the world itself which is both solid and liquid.

clear skies open windows & dry pavement ahead Travis Tritt

SHOW INFO: 10.11.13 Concrete Street Amphitheater Corpus Christi Words by - Leigh Brannon, Three Sixty Spin / Blue Onyx Music LLC No sky is bluer, no air crisper, no leaf greener than after a storm, and Travis Tritt is adding a musical addendum to that list with the release of The Calm After .... Part metaphor and surprisingly literal, the title is reflective of a fresh and focused start for one of the most successful and acclaimed musical creators of his era. The turmoil his music has come through to get this point, however, is very real. "I feel so humbled and blessed to be where I am right now," says Travis, who will release the album on his own Post Oak Records. "My voice has never been stronger, I'm constantly playing and working to become a better guitar player, banjo player, vocalist and songwriter. I am honestly as excited about the creative process and performing now as I was the day I signed my first record deal." The highly abbreviated Tritt timeline has the young Georgian incorporating lifelong influences in Southern Rock, blues and gospel into his country during a honky-tonk apprenticeship that led him to Warner Bros. His 1990 debut Country Club and its succession of hits put him in the vanguard of the genre's early

'90s boom. At the same time, his conspicuous lack of a cowboy hat and musical aggressiveness set him apart. The next eight albums and scores of hit singles led him to amass more than 25 million in career album sales, two Grammys, three CMA Awards and a devoted fan base that filled venues coast-to-coast. Tritt recalled the first time he heard his debut single “Country Club” on the radio. On his way back to Atlanta from a showcase in Nashville in 1989, Tritt and his band were packed into two vans when he heard the DJ introduce “Country Club.” “We didn’t even have a tour bus at the time,” he said. “My drummer would drive one van and I drove the other. We were coming out of Nashville and we were almost to the point where the radio station was almost completely faded away and we heard the disc jockey say, ‘Coming up next is a song from a brand new artist named Travis Tritt. The song’s called ‘Country Club.’ We’ll play that next.’” Overjoyed, Tritt immediately made his band pull off to the side of the road. “[We] sat and waited for it to come on because we knew if we had gone any 20 STEAM MAGAZINE OCT 2013 WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/STEAMTX further we were going to lose

WEBSITE: www.travistritt.com SOCIAL: travistritt the station,” he said. “There was just something about that moment. It was almost surreal to have finally realized that all those years of hard work and now you’ve finally got a song on the radio. It’s unbelievable.” A 2006 recording session for a Sam Moore album proved fateful when producer, musician and American Idol judge Randy Jackson complimented Travis on his vocals. The meeting led to a co-production collaboration on Tritt's next album, which would eventually be titled The Storm. The name, unfortunately, fit in ways no one would have expected. Released in 2007 on the independent Category 5 Records, The Storm soon became embroiled in one. The company founder was funding the label through ill-gotten revenue in his principle business. "Because of the legal problems he ran into, which eventually led to him going to jail, the promotional push dried up and the label eventually failed," Travis explains. "The album never really got an opportunity to see the light of day. We did release a single and we got great response with reviews, but there was never a properly executed marketing or promotion plan." Nevertheless, the label's demise sank the project and led to years of litigation. The final

settlement, reached in 2012, remitted master recordings for The Storm to Tritt. He knew exactly what he wanted to do. "I’ve been talking about starting my own record label for five years, and it all hinged on having those masters back in my control so we could kick off with that." Hence, The Calm After .... Pleased as Travis was at the opportunity to re -introduce music he'd poured himself into, he was also intent on fulfilling his initial vision. Originally a 12-track release, the album's sessions actually yielded 14 finished recordings with the two unreleased selections being Tritt's take on the band Faces' "Stay With Me" and the Patty Smyth-Don Henley duet "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough." The latter had been intended as a pairing with an established female country artist. "When we were closing out the album, the timing was off because the scheduling just didn't work out for the short list of women I thought had the soul to make that song special. So we basically shelved it." Fast forward several years, and Tritt discovered that if the perfect duet partner doesn't materialize, you can always grow your own. On a family car trip, the unreleased track came up on his iPod. "My 15-year-old daughter Tyler Reese, who had never heard the song, started

singing along in the backseat. When it ended she had me play it again five or six times. I was listening to her sing it and I was impressed, but I didn't say anything. When we got home, I told my wife that I thought she could really do a great job on this song. We agreed, so I took her in the studio last year and had her sing the female parts. I know I sound like a biased parent, but she really did nail it and the proof is in the track." As his daughter's voice takes wing, Travis Tritt finds his own career enjoying a new spring. He already has plans to follow the initial release with a variety of music projects, including a new, mostly acoustic project with former No Hats Tour chum Marty Stuart. "We've got four tracks done on sort of a throw -back project that is on the exact other end of the spectrum from The Calm After ..., which is very heavily produced," Travis explains. "I'm playing acoustic guitar, Marty is on acoustic and mandolin, there's an upright bass, keys, light percussion and that's it." In the meantime, his performance slate is full as he rolls out a full-band production in 2013 following three years of well-received soloacoustic shows. He's also become a force in Atlanta sports, performing at the 1996 Olympics, two Super Bowls, a World Series Game, the opening of the Georgia Dome, the final Braves game at Atlanta-Fulton Country Stadium and, in 2013, the NCAA men's basketball championship. Through it all, music is still what gives him joy. "I turned 50 years old this year, strictly going off the date my mother told me that I was born," he laughs. "I need to go back and

check my birth certificate, because I don’t feel that old. In my head, I still feel like I’m 28years-old. I have the same energy, the same amount of love for live performance and for working in the studio that I had when I was first getting started. "The odd thing is, and I can’t explain this, but I think I’m singing better than I did in my 20s and 30s. I know it’s not supposed to be that way, but there’s just a control that comes with maturity. Plus, I’ve got a higher range now than I had when I was in my early 30s. And since we started doing the acoustic shows, people come up to me commenting on my singing or, more often, my guitar playing. "I get that a lot. In fact, that's how I ended up working with Randy Jackson. After I came out of the vocal booth on that Sam Moore session, Randy looked at me and said, 'Man, I had no idea that you had that blue-eyed soul thing going on.' "We've even joked about having t-shirts made up that say, 'I Never Knew Travis...' followed by phrases like, 'Played The Banjo Like That,' 'Can Sing Like That,' 'Had That Many Hits,' 'Is That Good A Guitar Player.', etc. You know, it's fun," he smiles. "At 50, to still have a career and be able to surprise people with music – I'm humbled and very thankful. It's a God given gift." Which is another way of saying that for Travis Tritt, it's nothing but clear skies, open windows and dry pavement ahead. WWW.STEAMMAGAZINE.NET OCT 2013 STEAM MAGAZINE 21

What makes a restaurant good to me? Nice atmosphere, tasty food with a great presentation, friendly service, and good friends to share it with. We met Jason and Liz the other night for dinner. It was their turn to pick and the rules are that it has to be a place the others haven’t eaten at. Yes, we have rules for dining out and as you go along you’ll see there are more. Their choice was outstanding! Kuzina Mediterranean Grill on Saratoga Blvd (between Weber Rd and Jefferson St). Like a lot of people when I think of “Mediterranean” my mind jumps straight to gyros and baklava. In fact Jason had been to Kuzina’s 4 or 5 times and hadn’t tried anything else! Which brings us to a couple more rules… Everyone at the table orders something different (no two meals the same) and everyone tries everything – only exception to this rules is an allergy. Now these rules can sometimes get in the way. Passing plates can get messy and if the entrées are small no one really gets a good taste and I, for example, do not eat meatloaf or Brussels sprouts! Fortunately, we didn’t have any problems at Kuzina! We started off with a Kuzina Mediterranean Combo featuring baba ghanouj (roasted eggplant with sesame tahini, garlic and lemon juice), dolma (grape leaves stuffed

with rice, mint, and tomatoes), falfel (chick pea croquettes), hummus, and tabouli with fresh pita and pita chips. Each entrée came with a dinner salad and the 3801 Saratoga Blvd #113, homemade balsamic oregano dressing was amazing! ActuCORPUS CHRISTI TX ally we asked to buy some to take home, but they aren’t (361) 857-0002 ready to bottle it just yet. SUNDAY—THURSDAY Everything was so fresh and… Wow. Yeah, that’s 11 AM—9PM what I can say. Wow! FRIDAY & Saturday As we chatted and nibbled our appetizers and salads 11 AM—210PM away we learned about Kuzina Mediterranean Grill and www.KUZINARESTAURANTcom the owners, Jordan and Ramzi Sukker (means sugar). The brothers are originally from Jordan and before moving to Corpus Christi they lived in Wichita KS To the right are the Sukkar where they had had a Mediterranean restauBrothers, owners of rant. for vegetables and herbs, so not only is Kuzina’s fresh, it’s healthy too and they note on the menu what items are vegan and vegetarian! Ah and then our entrées! The first thing we noticed was the basmati rice that was adorned by green rice made with cilantro and parsley and the steamed vegetables. I’m not a big rice eater but the flavors were so light and, well… Yum! Anyway, as expected Jason ordered the Gyro with fresh flatbread and tzatziki sauce that was to die for. The rest of us said surprise us and they did! Next was the Shish Kabob Trio with Black Angus Beef, Chicken, and Kefta (ground beef with spices, almost like a sausage). The Tandori Spicy Chicken was brought out third. The chicken was marinated for 2-days in Indian seasonings giving it that kick! (not shown) Our fourth plate was a tender roasted Chicken Provençal with the perfect mixture of herbs, lemon and garlic. I think the last plate was the one we all kind of dreaded. Not to say that we were afraid of the Braised Lamb Shank; it’s just that lamb has to be prepared carefully or it comes out greasy, rubbery, and usually has a dark flavor that no one really likes, but you eat it anyway so grandma’s feelings aren’t hurt. Liz was the first to try the lamb and then she didn’t want to share with us! Talk about good! Fall off the bone tender, no dark flavor or rubberyness (is that even a word?)! The Sukkar brothers wouldn’t give us all their secrets but they did say the recipe is from about 1945 and calls for marinating the lamb shank in 60 spices before slow roasting it for 9 to 10 hours. Well, at this point we were not just full, but ready to go run a lap or two around the track. Yeah, that’s what good fresh food will do for you; however we chose to have dessert instead! Mmm was the only thing you could hear coming from our table! Homemade baklava – not to sweet or nutty – and the tiramisu… Ahhh! One last note about Kuzina Mediterranean Grill, although they don’t have a license to serve alcohol you are more than welcome to BYOB.

Ladies Market Day Bringing Back Tradition

Most small towns across the state offer ‘second Saturdays’ or ‘farmer’s markets’ but the small town of Karnes City, 55 miles south east of San Antonio, hadn’t offered anything like that to its 3000+ residences, in the history of this small town. Local resident, Jessica De Los Santos, while trying to get her small business of candles off the ground, was also inspired by women who own and operate their own businesses and wanted to start something to show appreciation and help network these women and her new business. And so, Ladies Market Day was born. Jessica is a mother who works at a lucrative oil and gas company and has two young daughters in dance, baseball and numerous school events. She has a huge heart and would give anything she has to help others in need. Before the oil and gas boom a few years ago, Karnes City was just a speck on a map. Now the population has almost doubled and there are new residences and families that look for weekend adventures and things to do. Kenedy, Texas has a beautiful park with a gazebo, windmill and native botanicals, Joe Gully Park, but Jessica wanted to host a venue indoors, complete with air conditioned comfort for both crafters and customers. Jessica began Ladies Market Day in 2012 and has hopes to maintain its fun atmosphere for shopping and eating, multiple times a year, for years to come. Come see her and the ladies that represent Ladies Market Day, November 2 from 10:00 to 5:30 at the Kenedy City Hall. Concession is catered by the wonderful O’Daddy’s

Mike Zito & The Wheel On her fourth album, Star Anna takes another step away from her beginnings as an Ellensburg sidewalk busker and alt country ingénue, and heads towards a more gritty urban sound with the brooding ten song album title Go To Hell. Star also leaves behind her long time band The Laughing Dogs, partnering with Tye Baille as band leader, co writer, producer and who plays amazing piano and keyboards throughout. Star does not play guitar on the album, focusing on that breathtaking voice, thus along with Bailie’s influence making the album more melodic and piano centric. But fear not, the album has plenty of guitar from axe man Jeff Fielder who kicks off the album with the swampy rebuke “For Anyone,” and is bolstered by the thumping rhythm section of Julian McDonough (drums), and Will Moore (Bass). On the mysterious title track Jacques Willis joins the ensemble on vibraphone, elevating the macabre blues to a theatrical show stopper, supporting Star as she shouts from the rafters then whispers to our soul. Long time fans will enjoy the twang and grunge of the edgy rocker “Let Me Be,” and the country sing along “Mean Kind Of Love.” Many will no doubt be surprised by the pop leanings of “Power of My Love,” a super radio friendly track with an infectious hook that finds Star Anna emulating Adele more than Patsy Cline. The last two tracks on the album are pure fun as the group rolls out a rousing rendition of Tom Waits “Come On Up to The House,” featuring some greasy slide guitar and barrel house piano to accompany Star’s gospel fueled wail . The punked out “Smoke Signals,” follows like a bonus from the vault or a long lost Runaways track leading us to believe Star Anna may have even more tricks up her sleeve. http://www.staranna.com

Guitar man Mike Zito picked out his A team of musicians and crack audio engineer David Farrell and headed into the Dockside Studios in Maurice Louisiana for six days and created a love letter to the Lone Star state called Gone to Texas. The thirteen songs set of bluesy countrified soul rock was wonderfully tracked and mixed with a deep warm sound anchored by the stout rhythm section of Scott Sutherland on bass , drummer Rob Lee and Lewis Stephens on keys who bolster Zito’s greasy guitar playing and tenacious vocals. Saxophonist Jimmy carpenter adds just enough color to give the sound a modern edge and vocalist Susan Cowsill will make you swear this album is a set of duets with Bonnie Raitt. The opening title track has the perfect slow burning groove of a road trip across our nation’s biggest state in the lower 48. What could be more anthemic than the line “I’m gone to Texas with my guitar by my side, gonna find me a woman and make her mine,” Willie nelson couldn’t have said it better. Zito invited renowned slide man sonny Landreth to add his signature sound to the track “Rainbow Bridge,” fueling the Little Feat inspired groove that pays tribute to the bayou country. Zito and Cowsill get sentimental on the smooth lovers lament “I Never

Knew A Hurricane,” then Zito takes a solo turn channeling Son House with his own Delta tome “Death Row.” Then the album quickly shifts gears as the rhythm section is set loose to unleash a funk firestorm on “Don’t Break A Leg.” Then another of Texas’ favorite sons Delbert McClinton trades barbs with Zito on a classic honkey tonk shuffle “The Road Never Ends,” swapping solos on harmonica and slide guitar on a classic blues penned by Zito and Devon Allman. Speaking of Mr. Allman, Zito sounds remarkably similar to Devon’s father Greg with his lazy southern drawl and emotive delivery though out the album and especially on the tales of tribulation “Voices in Dallas.” And “Wings OF Freedom,” with Stephens playing some very Chuck Levell inspired piano for good measure. Zito closes the album with a dead on rendition of the gospel song “Let Your Light Shine on Me,” filling the shoes of the late great Blind Willie Johnson and his powerful bass thumb-picking and gravelly tenor. The guitar evangelist from Beaumont Texas was reported to have been arrested for nearly starting a riot by singing in front of a New Orleans courthouse; a true testament to the power of song. http://www.mikezito.com/

Alternative and Classic Rock fills the airwaves there and as such I think it’s having an effect on the scene in general. STEAM: You have a great history with the Mayhem Festival, starting off on a side stage and now headlining it this past summer. Do you feel an obligation to mentor any of the younger bands on the tour this year? FFDP: We cut our teeth at Mayhem. We had a song climbing the charts at the time we broke out onto that second stage so things seemed to come together for us at the time. We’re fortunate enough to be where we are at in 2013. Mayhem certainly helped us and for these younger bands I hope they look to us for inspiration in the hopes they too can climb the ranks and headline one day. STEAM: You recently joined on with the Shiprocked

Cruise, leaving port from Miami this January. Are there any specials preparations that are made differently when playing on a ship, considering you have to take climate, acoustics and the fact that it’s a moving vessel into consideration? FFDP: Not really. You just kind of figure it out as you go. We’ve played so many different scenarios and placed over the years that you just roll with the waves. STEAM: 'Lift Me Up,' the lead single from the album, features Rob Halford of Judas Priest. What was it like working with him and how did that collaboration come about? FFDP: We finished the song before working with him and all felt how cool it would be if Rob sang on it so we reached out to his rep and he was receptive. He flew into Vegas and recorded it in our studio a few days later. We actually went out to dinner with him afterwards and hung out with him and he turned out to be a super humble guy who is smart and talented. It was an awesome experience.

Local Food:

Transforming Our Food System

An editorial from MOTHER EARTH NEWS October/November 2013; http://www.motherearthnews.com

Thousands of ordinary people across the country are launching communitysupported agriculture programs, farmers markets and neighborhood gardens — and remaking their communities as they do so. All across this country, ordinary people are remaking the food system. They’re turning away in droves from industrial agriculture toward sustainable and local alternatives. Driven by concerns about food safety and quality, as well as disgust with inhumane treatment of livestock, people are queuing up to join communitysupported agriculture (CSA) ventures — or to start their own farms. They’re launching farmers markets as well as schoolyard and community gardens by the thousands. And they’re revitalizing communities as they do so, getting to know their neighbors and reinvesting in the places where they live. Steven McFadden, author of The Call of the Land: An Agrarian Primer for the 21st Century, estimates that 6,000 to 6,500 CSA programs are now operating in the United States. Considering that the first two such enterprises were founded in 1986, that’s some significant growth. (To find a CSA program near you, visit www.localharvest.org.) Hundreds of beginning farmers are learning their vocation through programs such as Community CROPS (Combining Resources, Opportunities, and People for Sustainability) in Lincoln, Neb., and Farm Beginnings in Illinois, Minnesota and other states. These new farmers are often remarkably creative at finding land to work. Kate Canney, for example, farms two-thirds of an acre spread out over six backyards in her town of Needham, Mass., as well as a 3-acre field that’s part of another farm. The Edible Schoolyard Project has helped launch more than 2,195 gardens since its creation in 1996. Rooftop gardens are sprouting in many cities, while

organizations such as Urban Patchwork, a nonprofit farm network in Austin, Texas, are helping neighborhoods produce quality food. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has tracked a 364 percent increase in the number of farmers markets in less than two decades — from 1,755 in 1994 to 8,144 in 2013! The number of winter farmers markets is skyrocketing, too — the USDA reports a 52 percent rise, from 1,225 in 2011 to 1,864 in 2012. “Winter farmers markets offer additional opportunities for farmers to generate income year-round,” says USDA Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan. “These investments are a win-win. Farmers have more stability, and consumers have a reliable supply of local food, regardless of the season.” People who don’t have access to winter markets can turn to delivery services such as Door to Door Organics, which brings organic produce and pantry items to its members’ kitchens. Local food — and the benefits it brings to communities — isn’t some temporary trend of the foodie elite. It’s driven by economic and environmental concerns, as well as the deep belief that good food, sustainably and humanely produced, should have a place at every table. We find these positive developments to be exhilarating. The current industrial food system — which has only been around since the end of World War II, after all — must change. Many communities are making impressive progress in building local, sustainable food networks. We’re all for a food system in which everyone wins, from farmer to diner to the little frog in the pond. — Read more: www.motherearthnews.com

From MOTHER EARTH NEWS, by Steve Maxwell When's the last time you sat quietly in the outdoors? Do you even have a place where you can sit in your garden or woodland? Every property owner should have at least one bench to enhance a favorite spot. Our trio of build-ityourself bench designs lets you choose the quick, inexpensive and easy Plank Seat; the Leopold Bench with its clever backrest design; or the solid, classic look of the Jordan Pond Bench and Table. And, we have detailed plans and materials lists available to help those of you who are not e x pe r ie nc ed woodworkers. The Plank Seat A couple of log sections and a sturdy board are all you really need to make the Plank Seat for a quiet spot by a garden,

lakeshore or campfire ring. Although a few tools are handy for building this bench, they're not essential. If you don't have any short logs handy, ask a friend with a chain saw to cut a couple of 12- to 14-inch-long stumps off a log for the two uprights you'll need. A simple plank across the top does the rest. A rough-sawn 2-by-12 is terrific here,

but a piece of milled, construction-grade lumber works, too. Whatever you choose, the bench will look best if you extend the seating plank beyond the uprights by 6 to 8 inches. If you're a traditionalist, fasten the plank to the stumps with hardwood dowels driven into holes bored into the stumps. Hotdipped galvanized spikes or 4-inch-long wood screws are a faster, though more modern, alternative. Place the stumps on a well-drained spot so they last longer, and peel the bark as it loosens over time. The large, flat seating plank is ideal for visitors to carve their initials in as a reminder of their time at your place. Think of it as a great big outdoor guest book. Leopold Bench (pictured) Great writers give the world more than words; they offer a new way of seeing, and that's the enduring legacy of American naturalist Aldo Leopold. Author of the 1949 environmental classic A Sand County Almanac and cofounder of The Wilderness Society, Leopold spent a great deal of time thinking about our place in the natural world. He promoted conservation of natural resources and an ethical relationship between people and the land. His simple, sturdy bench design reflects these ideals. Leopold designed the bench while visiting the run-down farm he purchased along the Wisconsin River in central Wisconsin. Leopold, his wife, Estella, and their five children renovated the only structure on the property — a chicken coop — into a small cabin for weekend retreats. "The Shack," as the structure is now called, is the only chicken coop on the National Register of Historic Places.

The bench, The Shack and Leopold's writings are all reflections of his commitment to living lightly on the land. A handsaw, drill, a few bolts and some screws are all you need to build your own Leopold Bench. You could use cedar or some other rotresistant wood. Even inexpensive spruce or pine will last 10 years or more outdoors, especially if you put the bench under cover during the off-season. Screw replaceable wooden foot pads to the bottom of each leg to extend your bench's life even longer. To order plans for the Leopold bench, please go to http://goo.gl/bsHfJ. Jordan Pond Bench and Table If you've ever visited Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island along the coast of Maine, chances are you've stopped in at the Jordan Pond House restaurant. For almost a hundred years, park visitors have enjoyed afternoon tea and piping hot popovers served on the restaurant's lawn overlooking the pond and the grand scenery of Acadia. Our third design — a bench and matching table — was inspired by the sturdy, classic outdoor furniture used at the Jordan Pond House. The Jordan Pond Bench and Table are easy to make. Standard 5/4-by-6-inch decking lumber, weatherproof glue and corrosion-resistant screws make this design strong and long-lasting.
