ISOLATION b o o t h Promoting Your CD Release

By Mason Shirley Record Producer

Making a recording is an investment. It could be a personal artistic investment, or an economic investment if you make a living playing music. Most of the time it's a little of both. So after you've spent thousands of dollars making your CD, it's time to do some serious legwork and get it out to your fans. Promoting is an absolute necessity if you expect to sale any records at all. Here are some random ideas on how to creatively promote your CD release and recoup some of that money. 1. Chalk. Go to Toys-R-Us and buy some chalk. Write chalk messages all over town with a message encouraging people to buy your album on iTunes. Try to write something catchy and memorable and chalk up any area that has lots of foot traffic. 2. Shoe Polish. Have a CD release party with your friends and encourage everyone to advertise the CD on their back car window using shoe polish. The more people who see your name the better. Let the whole town know! 3. Balloons. Go down to party city and load up on helium balloons. Write a message on each balloon with white-out and tie the balloons everywhere. Drive through signs might be a good place to start cause everyone has to sit and wait there. Facebook is over-saturated with advertisements and invites. It's time to do things the old fashioned way, but way more creative. People are bombarded all the time on the internet, it's not the only way to communicate. Use the world.

SUNSHINE WILL BE YOUR NEXT STOP The recently released debut EP Sunshine by singer/ songwriter Austin Gilliam has definitely shed some sunlight on the Texas scene. Hailing from Austin, Texas, where Gilliam has been for over 7 years, he has paid his dues in quite a few bands, some more successful than others, and this EP gives us a brief but satisfying glimpse into his true talent as a front man. The title Sunshine suggests poppy, upbeat music, but the EP simply has a great, gritty, Gilliam sound. Gilliam, along with Bassist (and childhood best friend) Bob Driver and Drummer Miles Stone “bring it” in power-trio form. While Gilliam and his band mates will not, literally, punch or kick you in the face; the music definitely will. Or at least, it’ll give you something to believe in, to stand for. It’s something you’ll want to hear. Perhaps, if you're a fan, Sunshine is what you've been waiting for. My favorite song on the album, "Strawberry Lemonade" has been stuck in my head since I first listened to it. If you are looking for a rockin’ anthem ”Maybe I’m Okay” is just for you with its Lenny Kravitz-meets-Black Crows rock/funk appeal. If you have a chance to see Gilliam live with his current band, The Politicians, pick up this EP too. Gilliam knows what he is doing, and he is finally ready to take the lead and say, “This is who I am.” STEAM Notes: “A” for vocals, b-3, power chords, lyrics, and awesome harmonies! (Midnight River Choir receives an A for their harmonious background vocals on Strawberry Lemonade!)

Writer’s Block

By Forrest Lee Jr.

Time to Tackle Structure Hello again! I’m visiting this beautiful Corpus Christi / Padre Island, TX area. I’ve played a few shows locally, Clicks Paradise, Beeville Western Days, the Sand Bar at the Holiday Inn, etc… and have been visiting with friends. It’s been an amazing weekend, y’all have so much to write about down here, I would imagine nobody would ever get writers block! That being said, I haven’t written anything since I’ve been here… until this article. So for this issue I’ve decided to tackle the subject of structure. As most writers start with simple poem like structures, many of our songs have similar sounding phrases. Also most DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) systems and drum machines default to 120BPM (Beats Per Minute). So many songs sound similar. Basic

chord structures with 1 – 4 – 5 changes will also tend to make songs sound similar. So let’s change things up a bit. I listen to a lot of Texas radio, and many of my favorite writers are Texas guys. But I do notice a lot of similar subject matter, chord structures, and song structures. I’ve worked with many Texas artists as well, playing guitar, singing and writing. All of them have very different writing styles, and a couple have #1 country hits on the Billboard charts. I’ll give you a couple examples of songs I’ve written, neither have made it to #1… yet. But both of these songs have the same 3 chords, and are in 4/4 time. This particular song,” I Want My Redneck Back” was written by Trent Willmon, Ray Neyens and I a few years ago. It was changed a few times structurally until it was something I felt comfortable pitching to other artists in Nashville, feel free to take these examples of structure and mold them into your own compositions. But please do not use the same melody or lyrics. Verse 1 Staring at the PC Screen Is sucking the life right out of me I told the boss to kiss me pension plan I’m heading back to my deer stand Chorus I want my redneck back My red wing boots and my old ball cap I want my redneck back Blue tick barkin on a fresh coon track Hangin in the holler Hank cranked up loud 5 card poker and a pig in the ground Laid up on the lake with a cold 12 pack I want my redneck back The structure of this song is a bit of a change from the normal writing style, but within the same basic rules. The verse is an A-A, B-B structure. But what makes it stand out is the timing . It’s in ½ time, and the key is drop D. But I jump time and add diamonds and

Austin Gilliam (center) & The Politicians with the Midnight River Choir

From here to Austin Every once in a while we get the chance to sit down with an up and coming artist that just knocks your socks off. That’s what we found in Austin Gilliam. Besides being a smart guy, he’s a true hard worker and crafting his guitar and vocals is what he’s all about. T So you just released an album. Is it a CD or an EP? AG “Sunshine” is a 5 song CD. It’s easier to say it’s an EP because then people aren’t looking for 10 or 12 songs. I did it this way because I could focus more on those 5 songs than trying to do 10 and maybe not get the quality I was looking for. But yeah, it’s a 5 song CD. My girlfriend did all the artwork on the CD.

T I just love the name Austin Gilliam & The Politicians. That’s just great timing for this issue. So you guys are a 3-piece right? AG Well, we’ve been a 3-piece, but with the album and some of the parts that are on it, I’ve decided to add a 4th. What I’d really like is keys. It’s not that I’m against having a 2 nd guitar, but that’s what I do. R Have you ever worked with a guitar synthesizer? It attaches to the guitar and you can play hundreds of different instrument sounds. AG Huh, I haven’t but I’m going to check on it.

R Do you have it for sale in the area? AG Actually, I just came from Surf Club Records where they put them up for sale. Charlie remembered me from a few of the bands I’d been in here. I ‘m originally from this area. T Really? I didn’t realize that. I just knew you played in this area quite often. AG Yeah, my youth was in Kingsville and then spent my impressionable years in the Calallen area. I’ve been in Austin for the last 7 or 8 years. R Yeah, sometimes it takes that long to get established in an area. I’m sure you’ve played all the clubs there. AG I’ve played Antone’s, Saxon Pub, Threadgils, and Stubbs. It’s really weird, it’s REM. I’ve played Saxon and Threadgils with one band and Antone’s and Stubbs with another, but it was all the same group of people.

12

R Well, that’s actually how you need to do it in this business.

T So you said you started out here, who’d you play with? I know there was a “W band” somewhere, but that’s all I could tell you! AG I started playing with the Scott Wiggins band from 2006 to 09. We did an album, Burn. R I’d heard that that album got great reviews and particularly your parts were highly praised. AG Thanks. We pushed it really hard and worked very hard in getting it together. Keith Davis produced it and it was pretty cool, because he’s a guitar player and he told me that it was one of the first albums he’d done that he didn’t have to go in and fix or add a guitar part. Then I bounced around and did a bunch of stuff. The next big project I worked on was

Quick Thoughts from J Michael Dolan

STEAM Magazine is proud to introduce J Michael Dolan’s Quick Read, a new guest feature columnist that will inspire as well as give you something to think about. His stories maybe short, but we have always found them to be deep. Enjoy! J. Michael Dolan’s successful entertainment industry career, which has spanned over 40 years—covering all aspects of the business, including writing, publishing, coaching, consulting, teaching, producing, photography, graphic arts, digital media and performing. In the late 60’s and early 70’s Michael worked at literally every major motion picture studio and every major television network in Hollywood, gaining valuable knowledge and experience along the way. In 1977, Michael founded Music Connection magazine, a music business trade publication distributed in bookstores and newsstands from coast to coast. The publication quickly became a “must read” for industry executives, and a trusted advocate for musicians and songwriters, who promptly dubbed it “the musician’s bible.” Shortly thereafter, Michael created Songwriter Connection magazine, which became part of the MC family of invaluable products and services. That publication was later sold to a privately held company. Michael has been a driving force in transforming Music Connection Inc. from a traditional publishing business to the successful Internet company it is today with three (heavily trafficked) websites. In recent years Music Connection magazine has been affectionately called “the most beloved music publication in the entire industry,” and after 33 years as CEO/Publisher and Executive Editor, and with plenty of soul searching and mixed emotions, Michael sold his interest in the corporation in May 2010. Over the years, Michael has created and conducted hundreds of motivational seminars, workshops and classes, throughout North America, on a variety of subjects and in 2010 was honored with a Lifetime Achievement "Star Award" from the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and the Los Angeles Music Awards.

FILIBUSTER

(Read time 0:30) / J. Michael Dolan

The awesome wife and I are in Washington D.C. for eight days. It’s a great time to visit because the entire congress is on a national “rock ‘n’ roll tour” trying to convince their fans to re-elect them. And thanks to our congressman, Elton Gallegly, we got an insider tour of the White House, and hung out in the Senate chambers— where we learned about the “destructive side” of filibusters (the use of obstructive tactics to prevent the adoption of a measure, bill, or new idea). Made me think that not only do politicians prevent each other’s good ideas from happening, we do it to ourselves too. Truth is, if you’re stalling for the “right time” to finish that script, or pondering “some day” to pull together that live show, or if you’re waiting for circumstances to “improve” before you take on that big “worthwhile” project, you may be “filibustering” yourself or your company. And the only way to break a self-inflicted filibuster (or stop the persistence of procrastination), is to stand up on your own two feet and “COMMIT!” Truth is, in Washington, it takes 60 senate votes to break a filibuster. In your world it only takes one.

Got Something To Prove? (Read time 0:37) / J. Michael Dolan

If you’re in it to prove something (even to yourself), you have a tough row to hoe. I’ve seen extremely talented artists and super smart CEO’s crash and burn because their best work was repeatedly sabotaged by a desperate hidden agenda: - “If I don't make it I'll be seen as a failure.” - “Others are counting on me.” - “I’m getting older; I need a BIG success!” - “I must prove to my family (and my self) that I’m somebody!”

- “I’LL SHOW THEM!” None of these is a valid reason to struggle in any career, let alone a creative one. Ok, let’s argue that your “hidden agenda” could be a “motivating” factor that could help propel your success. Baloney! There’s only one thing that will propel your success: doing extraordinary work! You don't need to prove anything to any one. The only thing you’re beholding to is your craft, your unique talent, and your dharma (your true purpose). Honor THAT, and you’ll have a career that lasts a lifetime.

R U OUT OF YOUR MIND ?

(read time 1:13)/ J. Michael Dolan

I think artists & entrepreneurs are better equipped to endure the beast of the mind, simply because A&E’s live in a continuous world of uncertainty, and “doubt” is embedded in their DNA. I learned early as an artist, later as an entrepreneur that hanging out between my ears was not only detrimental to my art and threatening to my business; it also clouded my thinking, stunted my career growth, stalled my decisions, and thwarted my best ideas & intentions. Fortunately, I survived the showbiz gauntlet and ultimately succeeded in manifesting success on my own terms. However, the truth is, I was saved by books, seminars, workshops, yoga, a few true gurus, a busload of swamis & sages, and 28-years of continuous daily meditation. Hanging out in India didn’t hurt either. Hopefully YOU don’t have to walk barefoot across hot coals to come to the realization that the true goal in life (or your creative career) is to be totally OUT OF YOUR MIND! In Your Mind: The relentless critic restlessly dwells Out Of Your Mind: The creative muse patiently waits In Your Mind: A distracting mumbo-jumbo of gossip & hearsay Out Of Your Mind: The bare naked truth In Your Mind: Fear & Resistance Out Of Your Mind: Adventure & Anticipation In Your Mind: Limited Answers Out Of Your Mind: Endless Possibilities Swami Muktananda once said: “The purpose of your mind is to question and doubt, allow your mind to do it’s job.” While others wrestle with their doubting mind and struggle to maintain certainty, the pro artist and committed entrepreneur silence the chattering beast by getting lost in the work at hand; creating awesome music, writing & directing inspiring films, inventing remarkable products, and providing exceptional services that benefit everyone. Always ready to embrace the uncertainty of their next offering, pro A&E’s are forever willing to work as independents and live as free-spirited outliers, who are totally “out of their mind!” Looking for more information and words of wisdom? T Funny how things like that happen. AG Yeah, it turned out working out for the better. I’ve always written own songs and played guitar, but rarely got to get any out. I’ve got 5 more songs ready to go and I’m hoping to go back into the studio in February to start on them. Although, I did spend last year playing bass for Brandon Jenkins. T Seems like there’s more country than rock. AG No, not really. Matt King and the Cutters are rock and this album is definitely rock. I’ve also played with Javier Garcia and Cold, Cold Ground and Drew Kennedy, who’s more Americana; they’re both out of the New Braunfels area. R Yeah, I noticed that Sunshine is very rocky, but has Austin Gilliam Rockin’ It On Stage, New Braunfels some great bluesy, Southern rock, and James Taylor-ish styles to it. I even hear, feel some Stevie Ray Vaughn. You really have your own style and spirit. AG Oh thanks! I was raised on Lynard Skynard, Molly Hatchet, and of course AC/DC and George Straight. But I worked as a doorman at Dr. Rockit’s Blues bar for a while and saw all these cool blues cats coming through like Tony Vega, Ruben V, and Guitar Shorty. And the cool harp players like Rob Roy Parnell. T I know you play a lot and have filled in with Buster Jiggs, but I heard that you’re sticking with them now? AG Yeah, I really like what they are doing and now that I’m out of the studio I have more time to give them. I’m also going to go back to school. I figure if my mom can do it, so can I. T Cool, good luck with school, I’m sure you will do well. Before you head off—where can people catch your show and how can they get your CD? AG Well, like I said Sunshine is available at Surf Club Records and I’m putting it up on CD Baby within the week. Of course you can get it at any of my shows and on facebook.com/austingilliammusic and www.austingilliam.com will take you to my Reverb Nation site. Besides playing with Buster Jiggs, I play Billy’s Ice House in New Braunfels on the 2 nd and 4th Tuesday of every month. In October I was invited to the Gibson Showcase with Midnight River Choir and Bart Crow. You can catch that on YouTube (look up: Gibson Austin Backroom Bootlegs - Austin Gilliam & Midnight River Choir - Strawberry Lemonade) .

Hopefully you were fortunate enough to catch the Reverend Horton Heat at the House of Rock in downtown Corpus Christi on 10/4/12. The Super Suckers got the crowd up and rowdy in anticipation of the Heat taking the stage! And Corpus Christi is very proud of our native son. What an AWESOME show! With that thought in mind we called Rick Bowen, who had just published a review the Heat’s 25 to Life album.

Pre-show, House of Rock

If the soundtrack to the new concert film and documentary The Reverend Horton Heat: 25 to Life, is any indication of the power and infectious personality of this legendary trio then the DVD will be a must have for fans new and old alike. The Dallas trio was filmed and recorded live at the historic Fillmore Theater in San Francisco in 2010 capturing the energy of The Reverend Horton Heat doing what they do best; performing live and killing it, giving us deeper appreciation for one of the hardest touring bands in the business. The tracks span the twenty five years and ten albums given to us from Jim Heath, aka The Reverend and his fire breathing signature Gretsch guitar. Although Heath claims he never set out to be a guitar hero his playing here is simply mind blowing as he rips off licks of equal parts shred, twang, surf, blues, country, rock all 100 percent fun. Many call him the god father of psychobilly, but Heath prefers to describe their sound as "country-fed punkabilly" with his focus remaining fixed on his lyrics which are filled with rapier wit and zaniness. You can’t help laughing and singing along to the chorus of “Callin’ in Twisted, and “Please Don’t take the Baby to the Liquor Store.” Everyone will raise a glass and shout during the swinging “Its Martini Time.” Not to be overlooked are the heroics of bass man “Jimbo Wallace, doing things no one thought possible on the upright, and the pyrotechnic drumming of Paul Simmons who mixes rockabilly two step shuffle with double bass blast beats that would make Vinnie Paul proud, each get well deserved solo’s and features. Props must also be given to the sound techs and production team for this album, as this is a crystal clear live sound where every nuance of the performance can be felt as if you’re sitting in the front row. ~

The Dancing Jaguar, By Alfonso Huerta The ancient Maya revered the Jaguar in many forms. As one of the top predators in their lands, it had unrivaled power in their physical and metaphysical worlds. Due to its nocturnal habits, physical beauty and glowing eyes, the Jaguar was an ever-present symbol of power, mystery, death and majesty in their worldview. In one aspect, the Jaguar is believed to represent the Sun and conferred upon their rulers their divine rights to rule, and in others the Jaguar was associated with the Moon, rain and rebirth. This print shows the Jaguar Dancing with Water Lilies, and it is believed to be an image that links the power of the Jaguar with the power of the Water Lily. The Water Lily has a dual nature as it is a plant that has its roots beneath the surface suggesting the death and the underworld, and the leaves and flowers above suggesting life and rebirth. This playful yet ferocious image is one of the most interesting aspects of this magnificent animal and the surrounding flowing water lilies give it a graceful rhythm and lyrical focus. This limited edition print is a copper plate etching and hand colored.

The Monarch Butterfly By Alfonso Huerta The Monarch Butterfly migrates from one special forest in the mountains of Michoรกcan, Mexico and from there travels all over North America. Due to its beauty, it was revered by ancient Mesoamericans, and, now that we are aware of the tremendous distances it flies throughout its life cycle, it is even more remarkable to modern eyes. Butterflies have been traditionally honored as a symbol of rebirth and change as it passes from a larva to a beautiful adult.

The Garden at My House By Alfonso Huerta This image is of the garden at my house during the height of spring. The lush landscape, the beautiful forms of the plants and the overall sense of peace that can be found in a beautiful garden expresses a certain emotional calm that I hope to express in this image.

Write’s Block Tackling Structure punches to hammer the subject home. On the first line, it’s in standard time, but on the second line “suckin the life right out of me”, the word “me” becomes the new 1 of the time signature. Essentially what I’m doing by jumping time, is changing the structure just enough to make it stand out in a sea of similar subject matter. On the last line of the verse, the timing is still 4/4 and doesn’t jump time, BUT the music stops on beat 3 with a diamond on the word “stand”. This really does take a very simple idea about quitting your job and going back to the sticks, drinkin beer, shootin deer, and generally enjoying life, to a commercial entity. In the chorus, the first and second line will power the title home. This is the, repeat, repeat and then repeat again at the very end of the chorus rule of writing! I want the listener to remember the song, and sing it in their head all day until they get sick of it. PLEASE MAKE IT STOP! Ha ha ha, that’s the commercial factor. So here’s the change up in the chorus. It’s almost like a rap for the first 2 lines, and then the diamond on the work “pack”, with a little guitar riff in the break, then hammer the title home. Now every song needs a twist, and the twist for this song is the redneck, is his girlfriend. You think It’s all about party time, but throw a little love in and viola’ it’s a new demographic. Verse 2 Just across the holler there’s a sweet young thing She can fix friend okra and turnip greens And I pray to god it ain’t too late Why did I let her get away Chorus 2 I want my redneck back She shines like chrome on a new caddilac I want my redneck back Her hair pulled up in my old ball cap Blanket on the ground way back in the woods Sweet as honey, she’s lookin so good Hoss it don’t get no better than that I want my redneck back I really hope this one gets cut by somebody, it’s a badass song, and Trent is one of my favorite artists and writers I’ve had the pleasure of working with. Now the next example is a catch little tune with a simple Buck Owens style feel and tone to the song. My buddy in Ft. Worth, Lee Anderson and I wrote this a couple years ago. (We also wrote “South Padre Sand”). It’s called “Too Ugly For Nashville” I’m too ugly for Nashville, too fat for LA That’s why I park my motorhome, at an Austin KOA I dream of playing live, at Billy Bob’s someday I’m too ugly for Nashville, too fat for LA This song was purely written for TV and Film Placement, where we can say pretty much whatever we want as long as the key words are searchable in a music library, and they need a Buck Owens style song. As ridicules as the subject matter is, many of these songs get used for shows like The Office, Friday Night Lights, Weeds, etc… As long as it’s not too offensive, you can get away with it. So the structure is very simple, totally novice, funny subject matter, and 3 chords. I never expect a song like this to make it on the radio. I have no illusions of it being a number 1 hit. In fact it’s a crap shoot as to whether anybody will ever hear it. But it’s always fun to write a few of these to get the creative juices flowing and then get to the more meaty subjects, like getting drunk, making love, quitting you’re job… you know what most of us musicians Forrest Lee Jr is a singer/songwriter, guitarist, and producer in Nashville, TN. He co-manages Loretta Lynn’s Coal Miners Daughter Recording Studio. His songs have been released by several recording artists, and used in hundred of films and TV shows. www.ForrestLee.com

cause of her age. This year she’ll be surfing junior women’s and women’s. C Oh, and I’m going to start long-boarding this year. I am sponsored by Benjamin’s who pays for my division fees and gives me great discounts on all my gear. Right now my dream is to surf for Volcom, that’s my favorite brand. What size board do you use? C Right now I surf short-board. In fact my current board is 5’4” and my next one will be shorter, but I’m getting into long-boarding too. D It used to be that you wanted a board that was at least a foot taller than you. Not anymore.

Coral on the Waves

Last year you went to Costa Rico; was that for a surf competition? C No, that was just a surf trip. Some family friends were going and I was fortunate enough to get to tag along. We were there for about a week and a half. It was amazing! Everything is so luscious green, the trees were beautiful. There are monkeys and toucans everywhere. Just so pretty! What about the water and waves, big difference? C Way different! The waves break harder, so when I was going under the wave I

Last month you might have noticed we had a “slight technical problem”, so we are print- could feel the pressure coming down on me. Some of the places I surfed had a ing the full story, “Coral on the Waves”. We apologize for the mishap and hope you enjoy reef or rock bottom and I’d never done that before. the story… Thank you, Tamma Hicks If you’d have told me two years ago that I’d be living on the Third Coast, I would have asked where that is! For that matter, I would have said you were kidding had you told me I would know a surfing champion, but here we are sitting in my living room a couple miles in from the Gulf talking to the Texas Junior Woman’s Surf Champ and her dad, Coral and Duke Earwood. So Duke, you were in the Air Force, how did you end up in Corpus Christi? D We are from here and we’ve been away a few times, but there’s something about this town that just drew us back. Of course, if it were up to Coral we would be in Hawaii, California, somewhere else with waves. My dad taught me. I taught Coral and my son, but he’s more into skateboarding.

Did you hit?

C When I was asking for advice I was told not to fall, so I tried really hard not to! One time I did lose my board and had to walk to shore, which is a little sketchy because besides sharp rocks they have sea urchins there, so you really have to watch each step. But it was amazing! It is the number one place I want to go back to! So, what did you do this summer?

C Well, my dad was in the Air Force and so we weren’t always stationed near a coast. But my dad is the one who got me into it once we moved here. I would sit on the beach and I would watch him and all his friends out there having a great time.

C First, I went to California for the Volcom Nationals. In September of ‘11 I competed in the Volcom Bush Fish contest which was difficult for me because the age group I surf in is 25 and under so there’s a higher level of talent with the older women. I ended up taking 1st place and was invited to surf the Volcom Nationals. So my mom and I went for 5 days in May. I competed against girls from around the world in the Volcom VQS Tour in Huntington Beach, CA. I felt so intimidated going against these girls and I didn’t place, but I am honored to have even made it there and now that I have that experience under my belt I think I’ll compete better.

D We have a picture of her first time on a board. The surf was far from excellent, choppy and brown and the little short waves, not what I could surf in so we put her on a board and I knew from the git-go that she’s a natural! She stood right up, had the right stance, and put her hand on the wave. The only thing wrong was her leash was on the wrong foot.

C The rest of my summer I spent working at the Quicksilver and Roxy surf camps as a surf instructor, where I taught people how to surf; best job ever if you ask me. Seeing how stoked the kids were to catch their first wave is an amazing feeling, I can’t wait to go back to work next summer!

How old were you when you started competing?

What was your most gnarly set of waves?

C I think I was 9. My dad’s friends all had kids that were doing it, so I decided I wanted to try it.

C They were here, during Katrina. Those were the biggest waves I have ever seen. Yeah, when everyone is running away from the hurricane or tropical storm – surfers are cheering and running into the surf!

When did you start surfing, Coral? C When I was 7 years old. Really? You were old! Sorry, but I was expecting 2 or 3.

I just read that you won a Junior Women’s championship. C Yep. The TGSA (Texas Gulf Surfing Association) has four competitions held throughout the surf season and then a state competition. They add up all the points you receive in those five and then you get a ranking. I was ranked #1 Junior Women’s Surfer – Texas and I came in 1st at the state competition too. The contests are in Surfside, Galveston, South Padre, Port Aransas, and here (Corpus Christi).

So when Isaac was spinning just off the coast of Louisiana you were probably out there, huh?

D The TGSA rules are that you have to make it to every contest, place in the top two in all three heats (quarter, semifinal, and final). You can’t surf in a lower age group, but you can surf up, so this year she surfed in the girls (12-16) and junior women’s (up to 20). She got 2nd or 3rd in girls, which is good; but she got 1st in junior women’s which was a much better accomplishment be-

So how do you pick a wave? You know watching on TV I’ll see these wave coming and the surfer just goes thru and I’m thinking why’d they skip that one?

26

C Yeah, the pictures by Jeff Dolan are of me at the TGSA State Finals and those were waves from Isaac.

C That’s a really hard question to answer sitting on the couch, but if we were in the water I could explain better. It’s determined by where you’re positioned. You

want to be just past the white water, you want to be able to feel the wave grabbing you as it is curling. D It’s a really fine line. If you’re too far back, you can’t catch it; if you are ahead of the wave you’ll get pitched. C You have to watch where the waves are breaking. To surf smart and catch the waves you want you need to watch the weather, know where the ground swells are, and the direction of the wind. There’s a lot to know, it isn’t just paddling and standing up. How about safety. Do you have a surf buddy? C No. Everyone on the beach watches for everyone, so I don’t really need one. Sharks. Is this something you worry about? C That is probably the most common surfing question. It’s not a big worry. I’ve seen a few, but it’s not something I think about. Like at surf camp, we tell the kids that as long as they aren’t swimming in chum, they’re pretty safe. Basically I have the mindset that as long as I don’t look like a fish or smell one, I don’t have worry about it. D Not too long ago I saw a spinner shark by Bob Hall Pier. He jumped right in front of and I’d never heard of such a thing before. So I paddled in, walked down the beach a way, and surfed from there. What about the mullet? I think they must be the dumbest fish, they jump constantly and I know people that have been hit by them. C I have had minnows get caught in my suit while I was paddling and I’ve been smacked a few times by jumpers. My dad had one get caught between his chest and the board, that was pretty funny. What’s really cool is to be lying on your board and have one jump over you. Dolphins? C Dolphins are good, because they scare sharks away. So when we see them we’ll slap the water to draw them in. Dolphins are just so cool and so beautiful. OK, so you’ve been surfing since you were 7 and doing these types of activities which are a big part of your life. Are there college scholarships that you can get for surfing?

C Besides surfing I also play on the high school JV team soccer. I started half way through my freshman year and learned everything I know from Coach Lopez, who I occasionally surf with. November we start tryouts again, which I am dreading, but am also very excited for it to be over with. Our JV team last year was undefeated champs, and we plan to stay that way.

Original Artwork of Coral, by Dicky Neely

You also skateboard, right? Is there really a similarity to surfing? C Oh yeah. If I can’t hit the water, I’ll hit the concrete waves. It really keeps you in the mind set and helps with your footing and balance. The only bad difference is that when you fall it hurts more. Ok, last thing I can think of, school. You’re a junior this year? How are your grades? C Yeah, school is school. It’s gets in the way of surfing sometimes. I’m an A/B student, of course I have to be if I’m going to be a marine biologist, so I have set high standards for myself. D Coming from a parent’s perspective, she knows her priorities and she does what she needs to. Final note: Coral competed in the Volcom QSL’s on September 29th and took 3rd place. She then competed in the 1st TGSA contest for the 2012-2013 season and placed 1st in Junior Women! Way to go Coral! ** Special thanks to Jeff Dolan for the use of his amazing photos of Coral. Facebook.com/ jeffdolanphotography ** We also want to thank Dicky Neeley for turning Coral into a cartoon.

C The TGSA has scholarships available, but like any other there is an application and interview process with the president. I know I need to start applying. That’s cool. So what are your future goals? C Well, I’d love to be a professional surfer, but my plan is to be a marine biologist so I can always be on a coast. D What helps with that is we have friends that are marine biologists and she sees them doing what she wants. They work half the year in Bali, Indonesia, anywhere and surf the rest of the time. C Exactly. When they come back from I am always so excited to hear their stories and learn about what they were working on, because there are many fields of marine biology and I want to find one that suits me and my interests. I was watching you surf and it is very physical, do you work out every day? C It’s very physical. Just to get out to the surf is very strenuous. You don’t just decide, “Hey I’m going to surf now” and be good at it and you either really like it or you don’t. But exercising for surfing? No, I’ve never worked out for it because it’s a full body work out. You run up and down the beach, paddling out is all arms and back, pushing up uses your abs, back and arms. Then you need to stand and balance on the board which is your abs and legs. But now that I’m in soccer, I have to work out because it’s a completely different in shape. Soccer, huh?
