ISOLATION b o o t h Is Your Band in Your Hand?

By Danna D’Amore

Are you a band or solo artist with grand aspirations of making it in the Music Industry? That is awesome! My cowgirl hat goes off to you. But and however…The Business of Entertainment, yes, I said “Business” of entertainment is much more about business than it will ever be about the “entertainment” part. During the last decade I have worked with over 120 bands and approximately 30 solo artists, give or take a few-( and believe me, I would have loved to give a few away!) All semi-kidding aside, there are two vital things that I have come to understand concerning why Bands fail to attain their goals of fame, fortune, and renowned in the vast world of music. The first and less severe of these two reasons is because they simply will not let go of their music as a “hobby!” Vocalists and musicians alike fear the whole “sell-out” idea. But that is exactly what it is, an idea - not a sound, reliable, objective fact. Would someone please tell me how playing and making music as a living is selling out? This “idea” is more of an excuse for musicians to stay lazy and safe in their sleepy towns and tired, old, mid-level, oblivion Bands! The second reason musical artists fail, and the more potent of the two I believe is that they are not willing to trust others with their music, career pursuits, and dreams of success. Until bands come to terms with these two specific scenarios they will never, and I mean never, have what they say they so desperately desire.

longevity acquired life experience and proven achievements, are able to get bands and solo artists to their next destination. Is your “Band in Your Hand?” I sure as heck hope not! If it is, than beware lest you hold on so tightly to your egos that you squeeze yourselves right through the cracks of your tightfisted fingers, taking the ever-lasting fall that 98% of artists take: plunging to their mid-level-band-oblivion deaths! www.soundmachinestudio.com

The Art of Speed "The Art of Speed: Coastal Bend Bonneville Connection" opened at The Art Center of Corpus Christi Sept. 21st and ran through the 30th. The show celebrated achievements by three local "speedsters" with land speed records in the world's fastest Corvette and on motorcycles too. Four vintage motorcycles were featured with views of Bonneville Salt Flats, from prints, slides, and video. "Form follows function" applies to the creations of Bob Lewis, his brother Jon, and David Pilgrim. They are challenged by people from around the world that come to the salt flats to get the greatest speed possible from machines they build in hopes of a new record. Steam Magazine went to the exhibition and got some nice pictures to share with our readers. It was a very interesting and informative show. The Way to Building Ishka In the August issue we featured the story of Sacred Grounds: the Ishka Monument and Larry Running Turtle’s dream to ensure this monument becomes a reality. Larry shared with us about two events happening in October: the release of a movie he is featured in, “Sacred Journeys of the Heart”, and the canonization of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha. “Sacred Journeys of the Heart“, produced by Ronna Price, is an inspiring documentary that will be released in Scottsdale AZ on October 19th. This is a very informative and educational compilation of lessons, instructions, and discussions featuring professionals, experts, and wisdom keepers from around the globe. Larry Running Turtle is one of the wisdom Keepers featured. The film pertains to matters of the heart, spirituality, and philosophy. On February 18, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI announced at Saint Peter's Basilica that Saint K a t e r i Tekakwitha, an Algonq u i n Mohawk Catholic woman, is scheduled to be formally canonized on October 21, 2012. She is the first Native American woman to be venerated in the Roman Catholic Church. She was beatified by Blessed Pope John Paul II in 1980. A special mass will be held at 10:30AM at Holy Family Church on Nogales St, Corpus Christi followed by a blessing prayer, drum circle, and Aztec dancing on the school grounds of Central Catholic School, 1218 Comanche. Paying reverence and restoring dignity and honor to the downtrodden and desecrated souls of our native ancestors has long been the desire and mission of holy man Larry Running Turtle Salazar. For information on how to donate or purchase a copy of “Sacred Journeys of the Heart” DVD, visit our website: staip.webs.com or call: Larry Running Turtle Salazar at 361-5636702 or Richard Xochime Flores at 361-215-9499.

M Yeah, I used to go to Houston and Austin for open mics where I got to know the people there, but I just never really came to Corpus because when I was going out I just went further. So I’m really glad that I’m coming up here, not just the Executive Surf Club but to Corpus in general. Everyone is so welcoming and just so cool. I met you in connection with The Kings Showcase II back in July. My family and I loved it and had a great time. It was kind of hard to find, but man once you were there it was awesome! I’m sure I’m not the only one asking, but when is the next one?

I feel that way too. It is really a bohemian time in Corpus Christi as a musician, performer, and artist. There is just a great feeling of what’s going on. So what are your plans for the future and where can people catch you?

M Hey thanks. We had a great turn out, a lot more people than at the first one and 15 bands. It was a great day! Yeah, I’m thinking it’ll be two years from now. I have some other projects that I want to work on.

M Well, I’m working on shows for October. I have a new project out called the “New Folk Scare” which is 3 to 5 groups going out and doing acoustic shows. You know trying to get people to work together not against each other.

Speaking of other projects, you are a musician/singer/songwriter and your album “16 Flowers” just came out. What is your genre? M Um,I guess technically it’s referred to as adult contemporary, which is pretty much what all the singer/songwriters are dating back to the likes of James Taylor. I consider it folk. My thoughts are that you were similar to James Taylor, yet you were very true to yourself and your own spirit. So tell me about the album, you have quite a few tracks on there. M There are 16 songs and they are all inspired by one individual. You know it was a girl that I had fallen so deeply for that I couldn’t do anything except write about it. The good stuff and the bad and I just felt that the material was too good not to record. So where did you record? M A few tracks were done at Southern Cross Studio in Refugio and the rest were recorded at blue Light Studios in New Jersey. How did you end up in New Jersey? M That was my first road trip and I actually won the recording time through Sonicbids (a website for musicians/bands that helps in booking gigs), but to get it I had to sell a certain number of tickets. So I recorded a CD and did a video and sold the ticket with a t -shirt, CD, and DVD for $25. That’s really cool that you aren’t afraid to think out of the box. I noticed that you have been coming into Corpus Christi more often and attending the open mics and doing shows.

steamtx.com

Oh, well then you should read Isolation Booth this month. That is exactly what the article is about. M I also want to get out and tour in support of “16 Flowers” in November sticking to mostly South Texas. I went through a music/radio-submit and I’ve been getting good response and a lot of requests for the CD, so I really am hoping that by spring I’ll be able to do a national tour. So what shows do you have coming up in October and how can people find you? M I’ll be at the Office club on 6th Street in Kingsville on October 13th. Otherwise the easiest way to find me is online at www.theoldfolkhouse.com and facebook.com/mathiasindiesolkrock By Rusty Hicks

Did you catch Jack Ingram on Day Jobs? It’s a Great American Country (GAC) series that takes country stars back “before they made it big” and has them experience a day’s work in either a job they had held or a job they always wanted to do. While growing up Jack’s father had a ’55 t-bird , and later a ’56 t-bird, however, he didn’t work on them, something Jack had always wanted to do. So he took the job and learned a few tricks of the auto trade from Greening Auto in Nashville.

.

Just about everyone knows Jack is a great songwriter, puts on a great show, and is very busy! I got a few minutes to catch up with him before he headed on stage. How often do you get a chance to play here? —We get to Corpus Christi at least once or twice a year; we love playing there and always have a great time. You have been very busy! I recently saw you on Day Jobs and then Texas Music Scene as the Whataburger performance of the week and that was an awesome version of "Love You". But I have to ask about your plane show. You partnered up with the Boot Campaign and Southwest Airlines to perform Live At 35,000 Feet on a flight from Austin to Dallas. What was that like? —It was great and one of those memorable experiences! I’ve always wanted to break out my guitar and play and I’ve been asked on flights to play, but I had never done it. I’m glad I was given that opportunity to and to share it with Jeremy Smith (a returning vet) and his fiancée.

For up-to-date show information and watch for that new album check out Jack Ingram at www.jackingram.net and follow him on twitter.com/jackingram

All of your fans are anxiously waiting for a new album. When can we expect your next project? —I’ve been working on it for about 6 or 8 months and it’s about half way done. I’m hoping to release it in Spring 2013. I know you are about to go on stage in Fayetteville, AR so I’ll wish you a great show! Thanks for taking a few minutes to talk with me.

Writer’s Block

By Forrest Lee Jr.

Tools of the Trade At last my signature Washburn Forrest Lee Jr Acoustic Bender is available. It's a songwriters tool as much as a great radio tour, and session guitar. Please read on for some other cool writer tools. Here's what I'm talking about. Just like all the other writers, I'm always on the lookout for tools out there to help me come up with interesting melodic and rhythmic twists. The Roger Linn Adrenalinn is one of the hottest writer tools around because it does a few things: it gives you a beat, and plug in a guitar... and viola! It tweaks the tone to the beat you've chose. So you come up with a cool rhythm pattern by hitting a single chord. I've even heard these "work tape" tones make it to the real major label record! I had originally used the idea of an acoustic B bender equipped guitar for radio touring. I had to play pedal steel licks acoustically; very hard without a bender. Then a producer friend of mine wanted one to use for a friends record. They wanted to do a lot of acoustic stuff, but it all had bender licks, so they needed an acoustic bender. Since his first record went to number one on the country charts, we have high hopes for this one. So I went to work on the acoustic bender process. They did use it extensively on the record, and for all the radio gigs. Then it dawned on me while I was on tour in Florida. I had the prototype with me. The boys in the band are all writers in our writer group. And we often kick back after the show, crack open a cold beer and write. This time I had the Washburn with me, and I could play signature steel type licks right out of the gate! This lent itself to writing more Country style songs because I had the ability to hear what an arrangement might sound like with steel guitar. We ended

steamtx.com

up writing 3 songs that night. I've since used it for every writing appointment, and we always write 3 songs in the time it usually takes to write one. There are several awesome writers tools out there that I suggest everybody at least check out. Try the Adrenalinn, Its cool and it gets you're groove on! Check out the Forrest Lee Jr Bender Acoustic from Washburn, the inner chord bends alone will give melody ideas a twist. And get a copy of Masterwriter (they have a demo to try). Also as fun as it is to scribble down ideas in a notebook or on the back of a napkin, make sure you have a laptop connected to the internet so you can Google information sources . If you are writing about a specific subject, person or place, do your homework with search engines. If you're on an airplane and you get a gut feeling, then the little white bag in the magazine pouch works pretty good... unless you need to use it for something else... I wrote an alternative country song about all my heroes on one. It was weird. I was in the airport and ran into Radney Foster and Ebo, and they were flying to Texas for a gig, as was I. We chatted for a few minutes and then hopped on our planes. They headed for Corpus, I

MUSIC

was flying to Dallas to play at Gilley's with Trent Willmon. I started thinking how many of us were living in Nashville, but flying back to Texas for gigs. There are LOTS of Texans in Nashville. Feeling my own mortality, I wrote a song about Stevie Ray Vaughn, Buddy Holly etc... and what Waylon must have felt after giving up his seat on that plane. I love the song even though it’s very dark subject matter. Anyway, all of these things help speed up the writing process and get your creative juices flowing, with the exception of the airplane bag. Forget I said anything about that. Forrest Lee Jr is a singer/songwriter, guitarist, and producer in Nashville, TN. He co-manages Loretta Lynn’s Coal Miners Daughter Recording Studio. His songs have been released by several recording artists, and used in hundred of films and TV shows. www.ForrestLee.com Hey Coastal Bend! Forrest will be here October 18-22 at Beeville Western Days (10/20) and he will be doing guitar clinics!! Check online for more details and his schedule! Facebook.com/steamtx

If you’d have told me two years ago that I’d be living on the Third Coast, I would have asked where that is! For that matter, I would have said you were kidding had you told me I would know a surfing champion, but here we are sitting in my living room a couple miles in from the Gulf talking to the Texas Junior Woman’s Surf Champ and her dad, Coral and Duke Earwood. So Duke, you were in the Air Force, how did you end up in Corpus Christi? D We are from here and we’ve been away a few times, but there’s something about this town that just drew us back. Of course, if it were up to Coral we would be in Hawaii, California, somewhere else with waves. My dad taught me. I taught Coral and my son, but he’s more into skateboarding. When did you start surfing, Coral? C When I was 7 years old. Jeff Dolan

Really? You were old! Sorry, but I was expecting 2 or 3. C Well, my dad was in the Air Force and so we weren’t always stationed near a coast. But my dad is the one who got me into it once we moved here. I would sit on the beach and I would watch him and all his friends out there having a great time. D We have a picture of her first time on a board. The surf was far from excellent, choppy and brown and the little short waves, not what I could surf in so we put her on a board and I knew from the git-go that she’s a natural! She stood right up, had the right stance, and put her hand on the wave. The only thing wrong was her leash was on the wrong foot. How old were you when you started competing? C I think I was 9. My dad’s friends all had kids that were doing it, so I decided I wanted to try it. I just read that you won a Junior Women’s championship.

Jeff Dolan

C Yep. The TGSA (Texas Gulf Surfing Association) has four competitions held throughout the surf season and then a state competition. They add up all the points you receive in those five and then you get a ranking. I was ranked #1 Junior Women’s Surfer – Texas and I came in 1st at the state competition too. The contests are in Surfside, Galveston, South Padre, Port Aransas, and here (Corpus Christi). D The TGSA rules are that you have to make it to every contest, place in the top two in all three heats (quarter, semifinal, and final). You can’t surf in a lower age group, but you can surf up, so this year she surfed in the girls (1216) and junior women’s (up to 20). She got 2nd or 3rd in girls, which is good; but she got 1st in junior women’s which was a much better accomplishment because of her age. This year she’ll be surfing junior women’s and women’s.

Jeff Dolan

12

C Oh, and I’m going to start long-boarding this year. I am sponsored by Benjamin’s who pays for my division fees and gives me great discounts on all my gear. Right now my dream is to surf for Volcom, that’s my favorite brand.

steamtx.com

What size board do you use? C Right now I surf short-board. In fact my current board is 5’4” and my next one will be shorter, but I’m getting into longboarding too. D It used to be that you wanted a board that was at least a foot taller than you. Not anymore. Last year you went to Costa Rico; was that for a surf competition? C No, that was just a surf trip. Some family friends were going and I was fortunate enough to get to tag along. We were there for about a week and a half. It was amazing! Everything is so luscious green, the trees were beautiful. There are monkeys and toucans everywhere. Just so pretty! What about the water and waves, big difference?

Coral on the Waves

C Way different! The waves break harder, so when I was going under the wave I could feel the pressure coming down on me. Some of the places I surfed had a reef or rock bottom and I’d never done that before. Did you hit? C When I was asking for advice I was told not to fall, so I tried really hard not to! One time I did lose my board and had to walk to shore, which is a little sketchy because besides sharp rocks they have sea urchins there, so you really have to watch each step. But it was amazing! It is the number one place I want to go back to!

Coral's first time out, age 7. Notice her leash is on the wrong foot.

So, what did you do this summer? C First, I went to California for the Volcom Nationals. In September of ‘11 I competed in the Volcom Bush Fish contest which was difficult for me because the age group I surf in is 25 and under so there’s a higher level of talent with the older women. I ended up taking 1st place and was invited to surf the Volcom Nationals. So my mom and I went for 5 days in May. I competed against girls from around the world in the Volcom VQS Tour in Huntington Beach, CA. I felt so intimidated going against these girls and I didn’t place, but I am honored to have even made it there and now that I have that experience under my belt I think I’ll compete better. C The rest of my summer I spent working at the Quicksilver and Roxy surf camps as a surf instructor, where I taught people how to surf; best job ever if you ask me. Seeing how stoked the kids were to catch their first wave is an amazing feeling, I can’t wait to go back to work next summer!

So when Isaac was spinning just off the coast of Louisiana you were probably out there, huh?

What was your most gnarly set of waves?

C Yeah, the pictures by Jeff Dolan are of me at the TGSA State Finals and those were waves from Isaac.

C They were here, during Katrina. Those were the biggest waves I have ever seen. Yeah, when everyone is running away from the hurricane or tropical storm – surfers are cheering and running into the surf!

So how do you pick a wave? You know watching on TV I’ll see these wave coming and the surfer just goes thru and I’m thinking why’d they skip that one? CONTINUED on PAGE 24….

Here we are at Buckin For Boobs with Johnny Kiser, of the Johnny Kiser Band, who I’ve been trying to get together with for quite a while. Johnny has been playing a lot and in the studio recording. So, Johnny tell me about your new CD.

Johnny Kiser Band One Song At A Time

J – Well, it’s going to be a five-song EP. One song was released two years ago, One Beer At A Time and others have just been released in Corpus Christi. They play them here and there on the country stations. But all the recordings and the EP should be done in the next 2 months. That’s what we are shooting for. When did you start playing guitar and singing? J –Well I started when I was 7 years old, but I didn’t really get into preforming until about 4 years ago. People were always telling me to do something, take my voice somewhere, but I was young and I was just looking for a buzz. Well, people start for lots of reasons and all that matters is that you did as I know music is not that easy. I really think you’ve got something going and are one of the best bands in the area. JKB is a four piece band putting out a great sound. Tell me who is in your band? J –First, thank you. I really appreciate that. Like the saying goes, behind every good man there is a great woman. Well in music, behind every good singer is a great band and I think I’ve got them. My drummer is strong as an ox, a very good guy! His name is Larry Lee Haynes. He is phenomenal and the back bone to us. Didn’t he win a drum contest? J –Yeah, he actually has won two years in a row; one here and one in San Antonio, if I’m not mistaken. And of course we have one of the best guitar players in South Texas, Jason Neely; the son of the great Sam Neely. David Villarreal is on bass and he is just awesome, but a busy guy. I think he plays with about three other groups, but he’s great.

** Photos by Raul Salina J –We’re working on a few. I’m not making any promises or saying much more than that. Locally we’ve got some people behind us, giving us support. L&F and Cavender’s Boot City, no signed sponsorship but they help us out. And we really appreciate it. It’s always good to give a shout to those people, make sure they know you appreciate it. So, we always ask for a good story from a musician – you play a lot, so do you have one to share? Embarrassing is always good. J –Embarrassing? On stage? Well, I can’t remember where we were playing. But we’re in the middle of a song and this woman walks up and grabs my crotch. I didn’t know, still don’t know who she was. It totally caught me by surprise; i missed a few words. You know it was kind of funny, but whoa. Well, I know you need to be going and get ready to play. But I wanted to say thanks for taking time to talk and we really look forward to seeing and hear more from you.

Do you guys have any endorsements, sponsors?

submitted it to the z101 website and it took off. They put one of our songs in rotation, which is pretty cool. Since then we’ve been taking our time working on full length album. A friend of ours has been doing the recording and out of 18 we’ve recorded over a two-year span, we’ve picked 13. Now we are working on the mixing and mastering. We are hoping to have it out the first part of 2013. Great, we’ll be looking for it. In the meantime how can people get a copy of your demo?

was able to catch up with Pete Soares the spokesman for RESZ, a Corpus Christi alternative rock band that will be performing at Ziegfest. Ziegfest is a two day festival at Whataburger Field on October 5 and 6 featuring music, BBQ and beer! Congratulations on winning the battle of the bands at house of rock on September 13th! Resz is an interesting name. How did you come up with it?

We have the CD-demo and t-shirts available at all of our shows. We keep selling out of t-shirts, so if we don’t have them at a show you can contact us online and let us know.

We started with “resolution” and just played with the word. We ended up shortening it and adding a “z”.

Speaking of online, how do people find you?

Who’s in the band and how long have you been together?

On Facebook.com/reszband and you can follow us on twitter: resz_official

I play rhythm guitar and do backup vocals, Adrian Guerra - vocals, Rick Pinentel - lead guitarist, Michael Garcia - bass and he’s the newest member, and Phillip Hand – drums. We’ve been together for 4 years. I see that you play around town quite a bit, are you planning to spread out and tour? Because of schedules we haven’t been able to tour much, but in December we will! We play around town quite a lot at places like House of Rock, Theo’s, Threads, and others. Tell me about the battle of the bands? House of Rock set up a 12 band online contest. The four bands with the most votes played the show. We were up against some good bands. That’s really cool. So as the winners you will be playing at Ziegfest on Saturday October 6th. Do you know what time? Our set is 3:45-4:30pm and we are the only local band to play on the main stage. Do you have a CD out? We have a demo cd we published after just being together 6 months. We

The King of Evil Disco Wayne Static & Static-X @ Zero’s 10/19 We’re relaxing from our hectic schedule and by finding a quiet space in a closed restaurant at the Art Center in Downtown Corpus Christi. Out the window we are facing there is a calm, peaceful view overlooking the bay and marina, when the phone rings… Hot damn! Can you believe it? It’s Wayne Static! Yep, Mr. Static! The King of Evil Disco! So where are you tonight? W We’re in Omaha Nebraska. I hear it’s a pretty flat place. W Yeah, that it is and a lot of people choose to live here, which I can’t really understand. A lot of metal heads? W Oh yah, totally. We checked out your schedule and you are on the road a good chunk of the year. Can you tell me about this tour? W Well, the Noise Revolution Tour started in July and will end October 28th. We broke the tour up into sections and the last leg started on 9/22 – that’s when Ill Nino joined us. We won’t be back on the road until sometime in 2013. I’m planning to get some rest and spend time in the studio. Wow you have an unbelievable line up for this leg of the tour and I give props to Zero’s for bringing it in. I’m sure it’ll be a sold out show. W Yeah, we have a big bill and we’re playing mostly smaller venues on this tour, so we expect them to sale out. We always have a great show in Corpus Christi. There are a lot of metal heads so we always do

well there. What album are you promoting with this tour? W The last album I put out was PIGHAMMER in October 2011. It’s under Wayne Static and it’s just pure evil disco, so anyone who likes Static X will love PIGHAMMER. And like I said I want to go back in the studio. I’m really looking forward to writing some new material and hopefully get a new album out next year. Static X has been around for 18 years, which in rock time is forever. I’m sure you started out like most groups… the 7passenger band-van. W I did that 7-passenger van for about 2-weeks and then I said there’s no way! So we went and rented an RV. Fortunately our album took off pretty quick and we went to a bus. Oh yeah, my wife travels with me so we have a suite in the back of the bus. Nice and comfy. So most of my career we’ve had a bus. Ok, so I’ve got to ask… How do you keep your hair up?! W You know, I’ve been doing it for so long that it’s kind of natural now. I just shoot it with some hair spray and it stays. Well, thanks so much for giving us a call – this was really cool! Don’t miss Wayne Static and Static X at Zero s on October th!! D It’s a really fine line. If you’re too far back, you can’t catch it; if you are ahead of the wave you’ll get pitched. C You have to watch where the waves are breaking. To surf smart and catch the waves you want you need to watch the weather, know where the ground swells are, and the direction of the wind. There’s a lot to know, it isn’t just paddling and standing up. How about safety. Do you have a surf buddy? C No. Everyone on the beach watches for everyone, so I don’t really need one. Sharks. Is this something you worry about?

Coral on the Waves, Original artwork by Dicky Neely

C That is probably the most common surfing question. It’s not a big worry. I’ve seen a few, but it’s not something I think about. Like at surf camp, we tell the kids that as long as they aren’t swimming in chum, they’re pretty safe. Basically I have the mindset that as long as I don’t look like a fish or smell one, I don’t have worry about it.

24

D Not too long ago I saw a spinner shark by Bob Hall Pier. He jumped right in front of and I’d never heard of such a thing before. So I paddled in, walked down the beach a way,

and surfed from there. What about the mullet? I think they must be the dumbest fish, they jump constantly and I know people that have been hit by them. C I have had minnows get caught in my suit while I was paddling and I’ve been smacked a few times by jumpers. My dad had one get caught between his chest and the board, that was pretty funny. What’s really cool is to be lying on your board and have one jump over you. Dolphins? C Dolphins are good, because they scare sharks away. So when we see them we’ll slap the water to draw them in. Dolphins are just so cool and so beautiful.

Coral at the VQS Competition, 9/29/12. She placed 3rd

C That’s a really hard question to answer sitting on the couch, but if we were in the water I could explain better. It’s determined by where you’re positioned. You want to be just past the white water, you want to be able to feel the wave grabbing you as it is curling.

OK, so you’ve been surfing since you were 7 and doing these types of activities which are a big part of your life. Are there college scholarships that you can get for surfing?

C The TGSA has scholarships available, but like any other there is an application and interview process with the president. I know I need to start applying. That’s cool. So what are your future goals? C Well, I’d love to be a professional surfer, but my plan is to be a marine biologist so I can always be on a coast. D What helps with that is we have friends that are marine biologists and she sees them doing what she wants. They work half the year in Bali, Indonesia, anywhere and surf the rest of the time. C Exactly. When they come back from I am always so excited to hear their stories and

learn about what they were working on, because there are many fields of marine biology and I want to find one that suits me and my interests. I was watching you surf and it is very physical, do you work out every day? C It’s very physical. Just to get out to the surf is very strenuous. You don’t just decide, “Hey I’m going to surf now” and be good at it and you either really like it or you don’t. But exercising for surfing? No, I’ve never worked out for it because it’s a full body work out. You run up and down the beach, paddling out is all arms and back, pushing up uses your abs, back and arms. Then you need to stand and balance on the board which is your abs and legs. But now that I’m in soccer, I have to work out because it’s a completely different in shape. Soccer, huh? C Besides surfing I also play on the high school JV team soccer. I started half way through my freshman year and learned everything I know from Coach Lopez, who I occasionally surf with. November we start tryouts again, which I am dreading, but am also very excited for it to be over with. Our JV team last year was undefeated champs, and we plan to stay that way. You also skateboard, right? Is there really a similarity to surfing? C Oh yeah. If I can’t hit the water, I’ll hit the concrete waves. It really keeps you in the mind set and helps with your footing and balance. The only bad difference is that when you fall it hurts more. Ok, last thing I can think of, school. You’re a junior this year? How are your grades? C Yeah, school is school. It’s gets in the way of surfing sometimes. I’m an A/B student, of course I have to be if I’m going to be a marine biologist, so I have set high standards for myself. D Coming from a parent’s perspective, she knows her priorities and she does what she needs to. Final note: Coral competed in the Volcom QSL’s on September 29th and took 3rd place. Way to go Coral! ** Special thanks to Jeff Dolan for the use of his amazing photos of Coral. Facebook.com/jeffdolanphotography ** We also want to thank Dicky Neeley for turning Coral into a cartoon. ** For more information on the TGSA go to www.surftgsa.org

CRAZY A Memoir by HR Stokes III aka Sandy Stokes

The Dirty River Boys started loud and fast with an old Christian hymnal, lest anyone forget their roots around these parts. A few songs in, they announced a good old fashioned “Dirty River Boys Chinese Fire Drill,” and immediately switched instruments with each other. With harmonicas and mandolins tossed about the stage, they played a fun little ditty and then switched back to their instruments of choice. They played a few more songs, paused for a shot, and then played a few more songs. It was my wife’s first time seeing DRB in concert and said, “It’s like hipster meets country… meets awesome.” She also compared them to Mumford & Sons, which I didn’t realize until she mentioned it. But England can keep those guys—Texas has the Dirty River Boys. The CD itself was also very enjoyable. Before I listened to their new album, I wondered to myself why (and how) a band that plays such energetic live shows would record another studio album instead of a live album. When I heard their slower, deeper songs like “In These Times,” “Another Night,” and title track “Science of Flight,” I realized why. These are songs that a lot of people wait for in live shows so they can go to the bathroom without “missing anything.” This album gives the Dirty River Boys a chance to remind us of their depth and true talent. Check out their new album or any of their past music as well, and be sure to catch their next show. -- Shawn Blair

Reviews: CD/Show/Book

The Dirty River Boys recently returned to Brewster Street Icehouse in Corpus Christi to celebrate the release of their newest album, Science of Flight. San Antonio’s own Two Tons of Steel opened for them and did a great job warming up the crowd with their well-known rockabilly sound. After some old songs, new songs, and pretty good covers of “I Wanna Be Sedated” and “Norwegian Wood,” it was finally time for the main act.

ART

I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s and I will be the first to admit I had a protected childhood. My parents didn’t let me watch the news, listen to rock music, or experience any of the craziness Sandy Stokes talks about until I was in my late teens. So basically I missed all of this, however I have heard stories from my husband and his friends that are very similar to Sandy’s recollection which just made this book more of trip!

CRAZY A Memoir is a humor-

ous, adventuresome romp about weed smuggling in the seventies and eighties. CRAZY is a fast paced story of how a kid growing up privileged in a sleepy, big town moved into the outlaw world of fast living and survived to tell about it. His description of his military service as a "tie-dyed hippie in army greens" and his determined attempts to stay out of Viet Nam had me laughing out loud. Feeling lost and unsure about life following the drug related deaths of most of his friends, Sandy hitchhikes around Mexico and ends up attending college in Cholula where his career in weed smuggling begins. You can let yourself go remembering back to how close legal and illegal were in those days. Sandy keeps a fast paced, easy to read, humorous narrative of his adventures which keeps your attention to the very end. Though Sandy is now sixty years old, he still tries to maintain his arrogant, renegade, womanizing, outlaw status. He spends his The Russ Stokes Group time between Port featuring Lightening Wes Aransas TX and the Carver, Cholula, Mexico, 1974 African continent. This is his first in a series of memoirs and it leaves you wondering what’s next! — Tamma Hicks Available at amazon.com and 1,000 pounds of weed, www.crazyamemoir.com Cholula, Mexico 1975
