here’s the great thing about coming to our comedy club: not only do you get come in and enjoy the comedy, but Not Just Water~Cooler Funny to you can order anything off the menu. By Tamma Hicks So you have the choice of coming Take one… Rusty and I are sitting in early for dinner in the restaurant before the comedy show or you can here at Comics Live Comedy Club in go straight to the comedy show and Corpus Christi introducing ourselves. N – So you’re saying you’re the Hicks- order in there. R – How did you find this location? panics! (laughter, phone rings)… J – We had a great time and great Take two… run at the previous venue, but we N – We are, John Roman, Nino B, decided to move to a location with a and Martin Cifuentes is somewhere bigger audience capacity, that was in in the building. Just put Martin C, because I can say his last name but I a more centralized location and that’s can’t spell it and I’m Hispanic!! (laugh- why we came downtown. Downtown is the arts and entertainment district ter, phone rings)… of Corpus Christi. We really needed Take three… J – This interruption something more centralized because brought to you by the new phone we have a lot of people coming from company (laughter)… Gregory, Portland, Aransas Pass Take four… T – Really guys? Can’t areas as well as Calallen, Flour Bluff, any of you say no to the phone? and the Island, so now we are just (laughter, and a phone rings, more 10-15 minutes away. We have tons of laughter) parking and we are easy to find; we’re Take one-hundred (laughter)… J right behind the Federal Courthouse, – Well Comics Live Comedy Club so if you’re bringing drugs you may started on June 21 when we presented the Funniest Person in Corpus want to put them under the seat or something. (laughter) Christi – 8 weeks ago. Yeah, it hasn’t N – Yeah, with some plastic wrap and been that long, but it feels like someduct tape, some mustard. Not that I times. We are at 1214 N Chaparral know! (laughter) at the old Hoffbrau Bar inside the J – Coffee grounds! Railroad Seafood Station. Which is N – Oh yeah, but mustard is the new the best seafood in town – sorry Water Street, but this is the best seafood thing. Again… I - do - not - know about - this- personally! (laughter) in town (laughter) and they have a sister restaurant in Odem Texas which This might be a little too much inforis just as good as this one. Seriously, mation! (laughter) J – We have a huge room. Generthe food here is really great. And ally we have it set up for 100 people

06

and we can accommodate up to 150 seats for bigger shows. We can bring anybody in the country here. To that room, right there! R – Speaking of shows, what is your weekly schedule? N – We have shows Wednesday through Saturday. Actually, every other week for Wednesdays, so far. J – And that could change. N – Right. We bring in all kinds of shows on Wednesdays… magicians, hypnotists, local comedians, so you have to look up the schedule on our website or Facebook. (Both are listed below) But it’s sometimes on Wednesdays at 9pm. (laughter) N – Thursday is open mic and that’s free for the public. Those shows start at 9pm. R – That’s cool. That gives everyone a taste of what you have going on. N – Yeah, of local comics. J – It doesn’t matter who you are, what you do. If you’re funny – we

ENTERTAINMENT

want to see you! If your water-cooler funny, come on out! (laughter) If you’re going to get in trouble for telling that joke at work, come down here on Thursday night and tell us! We can’t fire you! (laughter) And we’ve got $2 pints on draft! Who does that?! N – Friday and Saturday are our bigger shows. Friday is one show at 9pm and Saturday we have two shows, 8pm and 10pm. It’s $10 a seat for those shows. J – And starting September Comics Live Comedy Club will be part of the Corpus Christi’s First Friday Art Walk! R – What kind of shows can people expect to see? Regional, national with local openers? J – That’ll vary week to week. So, we’ll have major shows and highcaliber comics here. And what I mean by that is these are the guys you see on Jay Leno, David Letterman. These guys have been on Comedy Central, Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Fallon, HBO,

and Showtime. Like we have a show coming up with Alex Reymundo, who is one of the Latino Kings of Comedy; he was on the DVD with George Lopez, Paul Rodrigues, and Pablo Francisco. R – I just watched his special on Showtime last night. He’s from Kentucky, right? J – Yeah, that’s him. Funny guy! R – OK, so what about Sunday? J – Sunday? Sunday we go to church. We do stand up at First Baptist. (laughter) N – Most Precious Blood, that’s where you’ll find me. (laughter) J – We don’t do abortion jokes. (laughter) R – Who on your team who does your booking? Or do you go through an outside agency? N – That would John Roman himself! J – Yeah, I do all the booking. R – I know some things about booking, it’s not that easy. How’d you get into that? J – I first started doing stand-up comedy about 7-years ago at Crazy Times Comedy Club, which used to be at the Sunrise Mall. I started doing the open mic there and within a month I was hosting the open mic, within 3 months I was booking the club, and within 6 months I was the club’s manager. So within 6 months I went from never doing comedy to managing a comedy club, so I was thrown into booking. What I started doing was contacting the comics I enjoyed. I’ve been watching comics since I was 11-years old, so I just started calling the ones I enjoyed. And sure enough when I called and asked if they would come out to Corpus Christi they would say sure, and they’d come here. Absolutely, there is no one in this country that we cannot book. Whether it’s for here or a private party; we can get the biggest names in comedy here. R – And the advantage to that is when comics are looking for a specific stop or a three gig run, you’re here. J – Exactly! We are the only premier comedy club south of San Antonio. N- Take notes everyone! We are the only one! J – The way we book comics here is that they have to have credentials.

STEAMTX.COM

They have to have been on TV, in a major tour, real credentials. We are going to book some guy out of Victoria because his mom thinks he’s funny. And we’re not downing that guy, but we want to already know you from NBC, CBS, HBO, BET, Comedy Central, something. You can see this in our line up… Alex Reymundo, Felipe Esparza - who won NBC’s Last Comic Standing, Joe Hernandez, and the list goes on! R – And this is every week that you bring big names like these in? J – Yep, every week. J – I know we mention about a lot of male comics but there are some amazing females too! In the past we’ve had Olivia Arrington and she sold out! N – And she has the same credentials as the guys! J – There’s April Macie, Kristen Key from Last Comic Standing, Thea Vidale who had her own TV show on NBC and she also played Mama Benjamin on WWE Wrestling! So really, we don’t have just guy comics coming out here, but the women can kick your butt too! In fact, I think some of the female comics are funnier than the males because the female comics have to try harder to grab your laughs. You can count on both hands the female comics you think are funny, but for men you can go in to the triple dozens quick! N – Yeah, you can go to like 40! (laughter) J – What a lot of people don’t understand is that stand-up comedy is not just entertainment, but an art form. You start at level one and you work your way up. Take a musician – you can start a band and within a year you can be doing pretty well, based on everyone’s talent. A Comedian, on the other hand, only has their own talent and it can take years, 10 years, to hone their talent. Look at Louis CK. He’s been a rising star for about 5 years but he’s been in the business for almost 30! It’s taken him 25 years to get to that! R – So that takes me to something I wanted to ask you about… let’s see to use the right words… What are the rules... Not rules, but is there a kosher way to treating comedians that are

going on next? J – Oh yeah. Like when you go to a comedy show… Don’t heckle the comedian! You are not helping him/her! N- Yeah people, do not heckle! (laughter) J – These guys are professionals and they are fast, so no matter how funny or drunk you are – you are not going to win! (laughter) R – Ok, but I mean amongst the comedians. Is there a code of etiquette between comics? J – There is some etiquette. …Hey, Nino will you grab me a Lone Star? N – What? They’re not supposed to know we’re drinking during the interview? (laughter) But just in case sponsors are paying attention – John likes Lone Star and I like Miller Lite! M – Bud Lite Lime for me. (laughter) R – Glad to have you join us Martin! J – Ah yeah, there is some etiquette. You have to respect the comedian that’s going on before you. So if you’re the host you don’t want to be blue, and by that I mean you want to be clean, no cuss words or innuendos. As the host you want to engage the crowd, talk to the crowd. You want to know why they’re there – who’s celebrating an anniversary, a birthday, is it an engagement party, who’s celebrating a quinceanera?! (laughter) That’s your job to you tell a few jokes, and you don’t want to make it seem like you’re telling jokes, because you’ve already planned for these celebrations. Then there’s green room conversation. You know we sit around, tell each other jokes. I’ll tell you what, you tell another comedian a joke and he will automatically hate it. (laughter) He’ll tell you it’s awful , it’s stupid, it’s the dumbest thing he’s ever heard! R – And then he’s going to use it! (laughter) J – He’ll tell you that it’s hack. And hack is when it’s been done before or you’re taking it from another comic. Most comics will support each other, but then you’ll get the few that’ll say, “Naw, don’t do that in front of me.” And that’s another term we use, in front of me, meaning that you are going on before him. So as the feature,

the middle comic, he needs make sure that if he’s telling Wal-Mart jokes that the headliner is not telling them too, because then the audience assumes the headliner is taking jokes from the feature and he just kind of flops and you don’t want the headliner to flop! (laughter) You know like when the opening band comes out and plays Golden Earing’s Radar Love and your next and your closing song is Radar Love. The crowd’s not real impressed. R – When we were up in the Pacific Northwest, there were certain towns that comics would trash. So what areas are here? Flour Bluff, probably? Is it Victoria? J – Flour Bluff. Sinton. Robstown is a big on. And you know they deserve it. (laughter) N – Can’t pick on Kingsville because they’re doing something. They have a college. (laughter) J – Yeah, you have to pick on Robstown, they’re called the cotton pickers! (laughter) R –So how do people find out what’s happening? What’s your website, phone number, Facebook? M – Well, I think the website is going to be comicslivecomedyclub.com… but it is definitely listed at the bottom of this interview! (laughter) We do have a Facebook! facebook.com/comicslivecomedyclub and we just got the direct phone line set up, so when you call it will reach one of the three of us. R – Great, what’s the number? M – We don’t’ know yet, but it is definitely listed at the bottom of this interview! (laughter) Its 7 digits? T – You mean 10. M – 10? 3+3+7. (laughter) T – He’s a musician not a mathematician. (laughter) M – Ok, 10 digits and it’ll be listed at the bottom of this interview. (laughter) R – OK, so where are we (laughter)… Martin and Nino, you are both musicians and John is a comedian, so how did the 3 of you get together and how do musicians tie in with comedy? J – We are all artists that run this club. Nino and I have been friends for about 7 or 8 years and we met Martin through another comedian – his

08

brother, David Cifuentes the facebook comedian – and we brought Martin in as a partner. And the reason is that all of us have not only experience, but success in the entertainment industry. Nino B has won a Grammy award with the Kumbia Kings, Martin is a producer and has produced some of the biggest regional artist, and I have toured all over the country as a comic doing improve. N – Hey me too! (laughter) J – So we all had a general idea of what we want to do here. We’re not in it for the money; we’re in it for the art and the enjoyment of doing it. N – Here’s what we are in it for: laughter. In the world today, people need comedy and that’s what we want to provide. M – We are the only premium comedy club in the area. N – I have always been the class clown and I tried stand-up once. That explains that. (laughter) This club is my artistic release. I am a rapper and dancer and was signed with the Kumbia Kings when I was 17, so being on the road, producing music, staying busy is what I do best. Right now I’m trying to work with youth and street dancing. I’m also going back on the road with the Kumbia Kings at the end of September. That’s why I’ve only cussed once during this interview! I’m practicing not cussing for the radio, because I was doing a radio interview once and they banned me because I cussed! (laughter)

family so I needed a release while I’m home. I love comedy so this was a great fit! My comic heroes are Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Robin Williams, and Redd Fox; I grew up with them! J – It brings up a point when you talk about comedians like Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Robin Williams. You don’t just show up at Carnegie Hall and perform; you have to start somewhere. That’s why we have open mic on Thursday nights, because we want to encourage and nurture comics, so they can develop themselves. Basically, we want to build a comedy scene for the undiscovered comics because as long as we are building it someone is going to get really good. Guys like Steve Trevino who grew up in Gregory-Portland. And just last week Daryl Felsberg was here. He’s from Corpus and he tours all over the country. These guys had to start somewhere and Comics Live Comedy Club is the go-to-game in Corpus Christi!

When John and I started this venture back in 2005 I was so accustomed to being on the road and not see my

Wildcat0 BURGERS

Writer’s Block By Forrest Lee Jr.

An article about all things in song, or the creation thereof. What I’m doing at this moment, would be adding words, not the way I would speak them, but rather in an articulate way. Defining the essence of a writing style, not used in written song in four score and… well you get the point. Writing outside the box is a great way to find new ways to say the same thing. Take a line Yoda might say for example, everything is ass backwards. Write a song you must. Or… broken hearted you feel… There’s a hook right there (broken hearted you feel). Rather than write it like you would normally say it… You feel broken hearted. Try reversing the front and back of a line, because this will open up new rhymes with the final word, while still saying the exact same thing. That’s a trick I’ve used numerous times to get out of a writers road block. One friend of mine always has about 10 new hooks or ideas when we co-write. It makes things easier (as stated in an earlier edition of writers block) for me to document every word he says while trying to convey his message. Sometimes all I’ll have to do to create the hook, is reverse the money line. But if I ever get stuck, I will always try reversing a line we cant seem to follow up. And that will usually work.

STEAMTX.COM

CUSTOM HANDMADE! BURGERS Another thing that can help if your stuck on a song is to try adjusting the time signature. You can take a 4/4 time song and change it to ¾ time, or vise versa. Or maybe create a jump time diamond or push. If you’re not familiar with the Nashville numbers system a diamond is a stop that the whole band does together. And a push is when you emphasize the swing beat right before the first beat of the measure, pushing the one. A punch is emphasizing the beat on the beat. I’ve been pretty lucky as of late to have another major motion picture placement (The Possession). The song they used for this film is “I’m Gonna Pay For That”. I had to re write the song a few times due to it not flowing correctly. Even when I thought I had it complete, it still was missing something. What I did to fix it was to change the chorus ending from “till the day I die” to “but I sure had a good time”, with punches on “good” and “time”. And jumped time on the word “time” (“time” becoming the new 1 of the measure). Well back to work… Its been fun writing this article again, I hope you can use something from it to help you in your songwriting. Forrest Lee Jr is a singer songwriter, guitarist and producer in Nashville, TN. He co-manages Loretta Lynn’s Coal Miners Daughter Recording Studio. His songs have been released by several recording artists, and used in hundreds of film and TV shows.

Corpus Christi becomes the cultural hub of South Texas during the week of September 21-27th as international filmmakers, heavyhitter keynote speakers, and regional musicians gather for the first ever South Texas Underground Film Festival. Presenting one full week of independent films, live entertainment, and cultural exchange, South Texas Underground Film (STUF) prepares for their biggest feat yet. Showcasing a wide variety of music documentaries, queer films, experimental shorts, and more, the STUF Festival welcomes nationally-known filmmakers to share their work and to highlight local talent as well. Tickets for the event range from weeklong passes starting at $60, day passes for $20, and individual screenings at $5 per film. Tickets are available through the Art Center of Corpus Christi website at www.artcentercc.org. Head of South Texas Underground Film and coordinator of the STUF Festival, Mariella Sonam-Perez describes the caliber of cultural influence the STUF Festival will have on Corpus Christi’s tourism industry. “We’re hoping Corpus Christi understands the importance of supporting the film festival and how this event will represent local support for filmmaking to visiting filmmakers,” said Sonam-Perez. “The event will bring in a good amount of money to our area because a lot of people will be visiting town in support of their films and will possibly return to film because of Corpus Christi’s great film locations.”

Each day of the STUF Festival is packed with film screenings, concerts, panel discussions, and after parties; making community involvement highly encouraged and much needed. “We’ve been so grassroots as an organization that this is the first time we’ve reached out to the community for funding. We need help paying for film workshops, donations of chairs, volunteers, and for local merchants to donate items for the filmmaker swag bags. This is a good opportunity to promote local businesses and we have booths for sale during our three-day film expo as well,” added Sonam-Perez. “Several countries will be represented at this festival and we’re hoping to expose Corpus Christi to visitors in more than one positive way.” For more information and a schedule of events visit the South Texas Underground Film website at www.southtexasundergroundfilm.org or call Mariella Sonam-Perez at (361) 673- 7862.

down to their children and so on. L –You’re right, the people from that era thought we were lower than life, scum. But with their bureaucratic ways the government has polluted your brain already. And this is the reason why: Why is it or how is it that we (you’ve already claimed to be Native-American) are the only race in the human race that has to prove the quantum of blood as though we were a dog or a horse? There is no other race that has to prove who they are. In the same bureaucratic way, we are being genocide because they have already imbedded in your brain that you are only an eighth, a quarter, a sixteenth. We are not measuring cups, we are human beings. In fact, I tell people that we aren’t even human beings - we are spiritual beings having a human experience. So, in that bureaucratic way, we are being genocide because sooner than later your child, grandchild will not be able to claim any Native-American heritage by blood.

Ground

TELL ME AND I WILL FORGET, SHOW ME AND I MIGHT REMEMBER, INVOLVE ME AND I WILL UNDERSTAND... Have you driven by the site of the future American Indian Monument (at Pat & Han Suter Park on Ennis Joslin Road in Corpus Christi, TX)? We’ll bet you have, we do almost on a daily basis. What we noticed is that it never seemed to change, so our interest began. Then in May 2012 we were at Tuleta Day (in Tuleta TX) and met a group from the Beeville Chapter of the South Texas Alliance of Indigenous People. First, that’s a mouth full! STAIP is much easier. Second, they shared the information they had and of course turned our interest into a case of the “we’ve-got-to-know” and they were able to connect us with the STAIP organizers in Corpus Christi. Heck, our first conversation was with Richard Xochime Flores, the Vice-President of STAIP, and lasted more than an hour! Richard gave us great information and pointed us in the direction of the president of STAIP and Holy man Larry Running Turtle Salazar.

12

We were able to sit down with Larry last week so that we could learn about the indigenous peoples that lived in the Corpus Christi area, why was the Pat & Han Suter Park on Ennis Joslin Road chosen as the monument site, and of course how can we help get the monument from a drawing to a reality. T – I understand you are a lecturer, instructor. Can you tell me about your teachings and where you teach? L – I teach American Indian studies. I teach at the universities and colleges as a guest lecturer for students in psychology, anthropology, archeology, and early childhood education. T – What about genealogy? L – Well you may not be too thrilled with what I say about genealogy and it’s not so much about genealogy per say, but I speak about how we are still being genocide in a very bureaucratic way. Here’s an example. How much Indian do you have? T – I believe I’m one-eighth Cherokee. My great- grandmother was Cherokee and my grandfather and his siblings were taught to not acknowledge it and they passed it

ART

T – That’s a sad thought. R – When we go by the site on Ennis Joslin it feels sad to see it there doing nothing. L – It is sad, it’s incredibly sad and what hurts me so much is that it’s here, in this town, and people just don’t care. R – Let me tell you what I know, and please correct me and fill in the blanks, because I genuinely want to know. From what I understand, people have been desecrating graves and in this case construction was going up and workers were just trashing remains with total disregard. So this monument, like the Unknown Soldier’s tomb, is a place to honor all of those people whether their remains are there or not. L – It’s more like the Forgotten Soldier. R – Oh, because we don’t have the remains, but we are blessing and honoring those people with this monument. L – When you say “we don’t have those remains” what do you mean? R – I’m

referring to the ones that are gone, desecrated. L – I know exactly where those are. R – You’re kidding me?! L – Why would I do that? They are sitting in universities - UT in San Antonio and Austin and at Carr University. There are more human remains in those universities then there are American Indians alive in the state of Texas right now. R – I did not know that! Now one of the reasons we became so interested in this project is the sign just sits there and people pass by it every day without seeing it. We want to help bring you attention, awareness, and respect. L – I have a copy of the report from Ennis Joslin by TxDOT that is about 5 inches thick, and another from the burial site that was uncovered about two years ago on Wooldridge and it’s about an inch as there were only seven bodies. But there were thousands of people that were pulled out with no ceremony, with no regards and sent off to universities. Some of the funerary objects were sold to Europe, some were kept by private collectors, and some were sent to museums and universities. Right in the corner of Alameda and Ocean Drive there is an empty lot. Why do you suppose prime real estate like that is

STEAMTX.COM

empty? R and T – I have no idea. I don’t think I’ve ever thought about it. L – Rusty, they quit counting at 5,000 bodies at that spot. R – So is there going to be something… L – There is going to be nothing there. R – So that had to have been the spot! L – It is one major spot! Let me tell you why our people chose that area… We are taught and it is part of our beliefs that we get out blessings from the holy people just as the sun begins to peak out of the earth and if you are standing at that site, the sun rises magnificently. And that is what makes it such a sacred site. Let me show you this picture of the site after a hurricane in 1933. (see inset) There are 150 bodies in fetal position facing the east, which is the most sacred site. R – What tribes were in this area? L – Primarily the Karankawa, but there were also many other tribes that were pulled out of that burial site. There were also the Tonkawa, the Wacos, the Comanche, and Apache. There were many different nations, because there were no boundaries; remember this was once Mexico too. So a lot of native people would come to Corpus Christi for the food resources and more importantly the medi-

cines. Take the Kickapoo Nation, they have a reservation in Eagle Pass but they originate from the New York area. So, many nations would migrate here from all over the continent for the medicines and herbs that are found here, and when a person didn’t make the journey back, they passed away, that person would be laid to rest at the sacred site. Even when we were erecting the sign, we found a tooth. So that site is still very much alive. R – As you and I said people drive by without noticing these, what about the City? Are they helping you? L – About the only thing the City has done is given STAIP permission to erect a monument on the park property. R – What about laws? L – There is a law cosponsored by Rep. Ben Nighthorse Campbell from Colorado that was passed in 1990, Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). From that point on the laws of Indian burial grounds changed, except in Texas. Somehow it just didn’t trickle down here. What it’s really about is that in 1836, during the Indian Removal Act, they actually thought they had removed all the Indians. Now let me tell you my story… In 1836 my people picked up a Hispanic survival name, Salazar – my last name. Larry is my first name. These are survival names that we had to pick up; we learned their language, religion, culture, we became hidden in our own land. Now if I pull my hair back and “Si hablo como

ART

éste se podría pensar que soy hispano,” it is the perfect hidden identity and this was done everywhere. In the north they took on French-Canadian names. We did what was needed to survive, because our people were being shot on sight or being put in America’s first POW camps, Indian reservations. Just remember History was written by the people that won, not those who lost. R – When did you become involved in the Monument? L – I got involved in 1994 when I received a call from a Corpus Christi Caller Times writer who asked me if I was aware of the human remains found on Ennis Joslin during the road widening. This project was supposed to have lasted about 8 months; it lasted over 3 years because of all the human remains that were found. The last person they found was a 13-year old Comanche girl. We know that she was Comanche based on the funerary objects found with her and she was carbon-dated 500 years. Anyway I rushed down there as quickly as I could, but under the laws at that time I was only equipped to do a ceremony for that disturbed grave site. Right there I made a solemn promise to those ancestors to commemorate that area and to give it the respect it needs. Every year since then, around January 14th because that was when I got the call from the reporter, I have been leading a march. We march 2.2 miles and to rebless the grounds, we drop tobacco, and

13

sing our tribal songs. We will continue this until they bring all our people home. R – I have a question about the NAGPRA Law; it still is not in effect here, correct? L – It is now. I made it possible. Just this pass April I received a call from a good friend of mine, Dr. Fred McGhee, who is an anthropologist, archeologist, and cultural expert, and he told me that they were trying to pass a law at the State Capitol and he felt that I really needed to be there to stop it. It was Bill 4425 which gave away the rights of land for the first slaves that were released in the state of Texas, the soldalos (the Mexican soldiers that didn’t make it back to Mexico), and all Indian burial grounds. I got there thinking I would be one of many Indians, African Americans, and Hispanics, but I was the only one in a room full of Suits for the other side. The Suits gave their testimony on why this law should pass and then the judge asked me to step forward and state who I was representing. I said, “I am Larry Running Turtle and I am here with my ancestors (I drew a circle above me) and I am speaking for the voices that can no longer be heard. This Bill cannot go on. You have already taken everything from us, why take the bones of my father?” The judge could not slam down her gavel fast or hard enough and said, “This Bill will not become Law.” R – Wow! That just gave me chills! That is living proof that one person can make a difference! Thank you! T – Me too! Thank you. R – You know when we moved here and was so surprised that in an area like this,

14

of resources that are found here, that there isn’t a larger tribal presence. T – I remember looking at a map and asking where all the Indians were because I didn’t see any reservations. I was told by a Texan that there aren’t any Indians in Texas. And that just dumb-founded me! L – We have 3 Indian reservations in the State and they aren’t Nations from Texas. One by Livingston for the AlabamaCoushatta (they’re from Alabama), The Kickapoos in Eagle Pass (New York), and the Apache in El Paso. R – Going back to what you said earlier, there are no boundaries. So then everyone is welcome to any of your ceremonies. L – No and it’s interesting that you ask that. Here in Corpus Christi we have a sacred sweat lodge, but you can’t stop in there unless I take you. To be honest that is the only place here in South Texas that we can go. T – Is there something that everyone can go to then? L – We hold a drum circle every Tuesday evening at the Janet F. Harte Library in Flour Bluff. Everyone is welcome, however it is a ceremony and we do follow ceremonial traditions including the use of Grandfather Drums. There is also a sacred prayer wheel where you go to pray to your ancestors, so if you were from the Mohawk Nation you would stand at Southwest and face towards the Northwest where your ancestors are. For the Tsalagihi (pronounced Tala-ghee), or Cherokee, you would face towards the Northwest.

ART

STEAMTX.COM

T – So you face where your prayers are going, is that right? L – You face what you need to empower you. T – We’ve driven by the site and seen pouches hanging from the trees. I understand that is called a spirit release, can you tell me about that? L – Well, I think you’ve got two ceremonies wrapped together. A Spirit Release Ceremony is done a year after a loved one or good friend has passed away. Actually a year to the day we go out to the site and do a sacred prayer so that that person’s spirit can take his final journey. The other ceremony you are asking about is the prayer tie. We take a 2-inch square of fabric that we bundle tobacco in and hang from the tree. We pray with the tobacco, so the theory behind the bundles is that it will stay on the tree for a great number of months until it biodegrades and the tobacco falls to the earth. At that time your prayer is complete. R – OK, so now we understand why there should be a monument and where it will stand. Can you tell us about the monument? L – It will be a Holy Man facing the east with his hand raised towards the sky holding a war fan, which is a sacred fan – the wing of an eagle. The Name of the monument is Ishka. This is an Apache word meaning until I see you again. R – We saw an artist’s rendering while we were in Tuleta and we understand that this person has said he would do it when the time is right. L – No, he said he’ll do it when the money is in. The monument we have designed will be done by Dave McGary, who is an incredible artist that works in bronze and hand paints the beautiful designs. He did the monument in Washington DC of Ten Bears who was a Dakota Chief. McGary does amazing work and as this is the second largest burial site in Texas, we wanted something that would stand for all the things our people did and died for. T – Richard had told me that STAIP was looking for a grant writer. Have you found

STEAMTX.COM

anyone yet? L – No, not yet. Besides looking for a grant writer, we have a few things coming up by year end that I feel will help us immensely. First, I am in a movie that will be released in October, Sacred Journey of the Heart (link provided below). Our project has touched the heart of the producer who has asked me to give a presentation at the film’s release and she plans to make a donation as well. I also have a book coming out at the end of the year, The Pipe and The Pen. Which is a lot of my teachings that I am leaving behind which are about the Native American teachings, staying on the Red Road (the path of life), and the sacred bundles (instructions on how to live on earth) we were given. My co-author for the book is Dr. Pamela Two Spirits Reader.R – Speaking of donations, can people go to your website and donate? L – Of course they can, we have PayPal accounts set up. R – Thank you for taking time from your busy schedule to teach us about the Ishka Monument, your people, and the area we are in. There is so much wisdom to learn. T – Yes, thank you. I have learned a great deal from you.

Wildcat Burgers Just In Time For Football Season!

If your looking for a good burger look If your looking for a good burger look no further. Wildcat Burgers out in Calallen, Texas makes their burgers by hand and grills them to perfection. The owner, Jason Hatcher invited me out to dinner last month and promised I’d love the food. I brought some friends out to take that challenge and he delivered on that promise and sent us home with our bellies full and our taste-buds satisfied. I love a good burger joint because they always smell great and stack the things ridiculously high, Wildcats is no different. Like I said I brought some friends out so we could try a variety of food and that we did. To start, fried pickle chips, onion rings, and hot-wings. The pickle chips ($6.99) were the best I ever had, golden brown, crispy and accompanied by ranch. The onion rings ($6.99) were picture perfect, ginormous hand battered rings with a crisp coating that flaked and crunched with each bite. I was talked into trying the ghost-chili wing challenge but their order for the chilis didn’t come through yet and luckily I was off the hook. Instead we had a 1/2 dozen of their spicy garlic wings ($4.99) which were hot enough already. The wings were big and juicy with a traditional buffalo sauce and a garlic twist that

STEAMTX.COM

was just right. Time for the main course. Three of us, two burgers and a philly; the Bagwell ($8.99) was a chargrilled 1/2 LB patty burger smothered in cheese, fresh cut avocado, the works and, like all their burgers, on a sourdough bun delivered daily from an Austin bakery and toasted perfectly. The burger of the night was the Earl Campbell ($9.99); 2 1/3LB patties stuffed with grilled peppers, onions and cheddar, topped with the works and chargrilled to juicy medium rare. It’s a big burger and works best if you cut that sucker in half. I’m on the lookout for the areas best philly and these guys are in the mix. The “Pete Rose” ($7.99) had everything a philly should have, juicy grilled steak, peppers, onions and mushrooms, smothered in melted swiss and stuffed in a toasted hoagie. The main difference here is the attention to detail. The chef, who is the owner’s son and not just some hired gun off the street. In fact Wildcats is a family owned and ran restaurant with Jason’s wife Amie (w/a little bun in the oven) greeting customers and taking orders. Son #1 in the back line-cooking and their daughter bussing tables and doing dishes. Son #2 just graduated from Calallen High and playing ball at TAMUCC. They have a baby do in September which should be a busy enough time, “Better not be born on a Sunday” says Jason. With football season around the corner Wildcats should be booming. Check a game

out on one their many big screens and stop in on Friday nights after the Wildcat games, they’ll be open late feeding fans win or lose. Keep an eye out for the Wildcat Burger Special of the Month; September’s is the Coach Danaher Burger with Pico, grilled jalepenos, pepper jack and a secret Wildcat sauce. If you have the guts try either one of the food challenges. The first, a challenge weighing in at 3LBs the burger with all the works and a pound of fries needs to be consumed in an hour. The second is the Ghost Chili Challenge for the hot sauce lovers. 11 of the spiciest wings in town in 11 minutes (No water, no milk). Good luck with that. If your not up for the challenges stop in any ways for a bite, you won’t be disappointed. Wildcat Burgers 15013 Northwest Blvd Calallen, TX (361) 767-CATS

Pear Ratz “Still Hungry…Still Hurtin’”

With three studio albums since 2006, you can think of “Still Hungry…Still Hurtin’” as a “greatest hits” collection recorded live. They have their own sound that has come to be called “Ratz rock,” a gritty mix of Texas country and good ‘ole rock ‘n’ roll. There are fast songs, slow songs, songs to dance to, songs to drink to, and even a lovely little murder ballad. Check out Pear Ratz next time they’re in town, or head to pearratz.com to “give ‘em a listenin’ to.”

Apologies

all of himself to his muses: women and booze, and his love: the road.

Austin-based indie-folk musician David Ramirez just released his latest album Apologies, and I have to say that I was very excited to get it. As I write this, the album sits at #2 on the iTunes singer/ songwriter album chart. His prior fulllength release American Soil was met with very solid reviews and has become a necessity for every road trip I take. Apologies shows a lyrical growth and vocal maturity that could only be achieved from heartbreak and late night shows in smoky bars.

His music has always been not just autobiographical but very geographical. Throughout his entire discography, you can hear songs about where he’s been, where he’s going, and where he wants to be. I have been following Ramirez since his first album, 11503 Lansbury, released in 2005, and these two albums are nothing alike—night and day. Apologies is a glimpse into the broken and healing heart of a true traveler. This album could serve as a beautiful caveat for any future artist who wants to leave everything behind and hit the open road. It is a long journey and many do not survive. It sounds as though Ramirez has left everyone behind for too long, and is finally ready for them to hear his Apologies.

David Ramirez

As open and revealing as this album is, you might wonder what Ramirez is apologizing for—Apologies isn’t a cliché album title. When you look at his tour schedule or listen to any of his music, you can see that his life centers on touring and recording. In one of the songs on this album, “Stick Around,” Ramirez writes that he’s traveled 160,000 miles in four years, and I believe it. In Apologies and especially in his song “Friends and Family,” it is clear that he is remorseful that he has given

When Grandpa Was A Kid by Paul Strand

Paul Strand was born on his family farm near Cloquet Minnesota in 1939, the second child of Clifford and Viola Strand. In 1945 the family resettled in what is now SeaTac Washington. Throughout his childhood Paul moved frequently, attending 21 schools before finally dropping out of the 10th grade in 1956. He then spent 3 years in the US Army and 3 years as a carpenter before returning to school and received a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Washington University near Spokane. After college he worked as a public assistance case worker and later as a computer programmer. Childhood was a mix of joy and disappointment and thanks to his caring family he was shielded from many of the

Readers are guaranteed to enjoy this sometimes poignant, sometimes sad, sometimes humorous but always intriguing account of the adventurous life lived “When Grandpa Was a Kid.”

www.whengrandpawasakid.com

“When Grandpa Was a Kid” is about more than one boy and his uncommon experiences. It’s about the common experiences of his generation. Seven-year-old Paul strolled through the orchard, sampling the antique apples that surrounded the abandoned farm house. He wondered how long he would live in this place. After all, he had already resided in more places than a kid his age should have, and would end up attending twenty schools in nearly as many locations. Paul’s experiences while growing up in the Pacific Northwest include adventure, humor and a portrayal of how life was, “back then.” Our SeaTac International Airport was a forest where kids watched bulldozers clear runways. Well-traveled hills that now lead to freeways are the ones where Paul sped his soapbox racers. And because of his family’s nomadic lifestyle; he watched his dad build their tiny home of whatever their patch of forest provided, lived in a 4,000 trailer house community at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, spent time at the infamous Briscoe Boys School and lived in a house built by the kindly brother-in-law of Dinah Shore.

Family of country music legend Waylon Jennings hits the right note with the Waylon Fund Fund supports TGen research into diabetes and its associated complications PHOENIX, Ariz. — Oct. 11, 2011 — The late country music legend Waylon Jennings is famous for songs like Good Hearted Woman, Luckenbach Texas, and Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys.

N

ow, his “kicking down the doors” style of music will infuse the Waylon Fund for Diabetes Research. Working with Waylon Jennings’s widow, Jessi Colter, and their son Shooter Jennings, the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) today announced the establishment of the fund to support and accelerate research into diabetes. Jennings, who lived much of his storied career in Arizona, died in 2002 at age 64 from complications of diabetes. The Waylon Fund will support state-of-the-art investigations into the genetic and genomic origins of diabetes —a disease that afflicts nearly 26 million Americans— in an effort to produce better treatments and give patients better quality of life. The fund already has received nearly $80,000 in contributions. “I am honored to put Waylon’s name behind TGen’s diabetes research efforts. I have met the researchers and am confident that donations in Waylon’s memory are an investment that will lead to better ways of preventing and detecting the disease,” said Jessi Colter. The new TGen initiative is drawing special support from the country-music industry. Broadcast Music Inc. (BMI), Ernest Tubb Record Shops, and Music News Nashville already are promoting the fund. Just as Waylon’s “Outlaw” genre challenged the Nashville establishment and spearheaded the crossover appeal and re-popularization of country music, the Waylon Fund will enable TGen to challenge conventional

ideas and discover novel ways of attacking diabetes. “TGen is extremely grateful to the family of Waylon Jennings, who have so generously allowed his name to be the inspirational centerpiece of this promising new research effort,” said TGen Foundation President Michael Bassoff. All contributions to the Waylon Fund will be put to work immediately to speed the development of new treatments by enabling TGen researchers to conduct comprehensive genomic, or DNA, analysis of diabetes, using the latest technology. Dr. Johanna DiStefano, Professor and Director of TGen’s Diabetes, Cardiovascular & Metabolic Diseases Division, leads a team of researchers focused on the genetic factors that cause or contribute to complications due to Type I and Type II diabetes. Under Dr. DiStefano’s direction, TGen’s team of scientists has important work underway in five areas of diabetes research: heart disease, diabetic nephropathy, obesity, liver disease, and individualized treatment strategies. From Dr. DiStefano’s most recent work, which replicates findings and characterizes a cellular pathway that contributes to diabetes through changes in gene expression not DNA sequence, to the discovery of genes and genetic markers that contribute to our overall body of knowledge surrounding diabetes and its associated complications, TGen is at the forefront of today’s diabetes research.

The Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) is a Phoenix, Arizona-based non-profit organization dedicated to conducting groundbreaking research with life changing results. Research at TGen is focused on helping patients with diseases such as cancer, neurological disorders and diabetes. TGen is on the cutting edge of translational research where investigators are able to unravel the genetic components of common and complex diseases. Working with collaborators in the scientific and medical communities, TGen believes it can make a substantial contribution to the efficiency and effectiveness of the translational process. TGen is affiliated with the Van Andel Research Institute in Grand Rapids, Michigan. For more information, visit: www.tgen.org.
