So much for the “Lost Generation” of the Covid era! These are stunning results which prove beyond any doubt that our pupils have come through the difficulties of the last year and a half with flying colours. Their fortitude, determination, and resilience have been rewarded, and they are moving on to the next stage of their lives in the strongest of positions. Warmest congratulations to all of them from all of us. – Matthew Mostyn, Headmaster

Rudiments Prose Competition Congratulations to our Rudiments Prose Competition winners. After outstanding performances from all finalists, the following students, judged by Damian, Maggie and Imogen, were awarded First, Second and Third place:
Cornelia Scott Lara Yagudaev Millie Gibson and James Brookman
Mrs Ager and Mrs Applegate with the Prose Finalists.
Elements Project Week Following their summer examinations, Elements took part in a Project week, the focus being ‘Green Fashion: Sustainable Solutions’. Pupils all attended an introductory workshop on the Monday morning, participating in a range of group activities stimulated by video excerpts from the Stacey Dooley documentary ‘Fashion’s Dirty Secrets’.
Mrs Noble, Assistant Head
Groups then worked together to respond to the stimulus in a range of creative ways, including upcycling, presentations, poetry, drama, makeup design and so on.
They were asked to include an aspect of Charity, Faith in Action/ Community in their project and the assessment criteria centred around the High Performance Learning values and skills; Creative, Empathetic and Linking. Our teachers helped guide the pupils, led by Head of Drama Mrs Schiff, Head of Art Mrs Applegate and Drama and English teacher Mrs Wylie. Our thanks go to Mrs Yorke and the teacher working party for developing the stimulus and introductory activities and to the Elements form tutors who gave their time to overseeing the pupils working. Out Rhetoric Drama helpers were invaluable in the help they gave throughout the week. We were delighted to be able to make excellent use of our new stretch tent, bought for us by The Friends of the School; it was perfect for outdoor learning and was used as a space for the Drama activities and final performances and presentations. We were incredibly impressed by the way pupils worked together to generate ideas; their resourcefulness and creativity produced some fantastic results.
Elements Project Week We had a lovely final morning getting ready and watching/ peer assessing exhibits. All groups performed/ exhibited to their form, and then the nominated groups below performed to the whole year group in the Stretch tent. Talbot and Challoner were elected by the teacher judging panel and our Rhetoric Drama helpers to be overall winners. They met with the headmaster to talk through and show him their work.

Teenage Cancer Trust As an Edmundian community, we have raised an astounding £37,104.93 for the Teenage Cancer Trust! Every penny goes towards supporting a young person and their family through the challenges that they face with specialist guidance and support. Thank you to staff and students for your creativity, time, commitment and commitment, all of which made this possible. Thank you to our wider Edmundian community for your generous donations, time and support.
Enrichment Week This year's Enrichment Week did not disappoint! With restrictions still limiting certain activities, Mrs Pitman and the team planned a fantastic schedule of activities, including: Kwik Cricket and Frisbee Dodgeball Rounders and Handball Football and Old Athletics (tug of war, egg and spoon etc.!) Colour run Birds of prey Stage combat Physical activity day CCF - paintballing, rifles, archery, assault course Dance
"The last four days have been absolutely tremendous, and to see all of your children – and all of the staff – having so much fun and so evidently enjoying themselves has been truly uplifting. Goodness knows, they have earned it." - Matthew Mostyn, Headmaster
Raptor Foundation The Raptor Foundation visited the College and brought four Birds of Prey to teach our Elements Students more about adaptations, food chains, and how the centre works to preserve and protect the birds through education and conservation. Our speaker, Elliot, was very knowledgeable and taught the students the role of birds of prey within our own country and across the world and what the consequences of losing a single species would mean to us in terms of the spread of disease economic downfall. Mrs Mallabone, Director of KS3 Science
The students were lucky to see both Minnie the Barn Owl and Spike the Harris Hawk flying around the Hall. They learnt about how the owl flies silently and why the hawk must have bells on his leg to warn any prey that he is around because he is not a natural predator in the UK. Lastly, the students dissected some pellets. We put together the bones to find out what they had been eating in the last few days! These are regurgitated from the birds and contain the undigested parts of their food. A massive thank you to all involved in the work at the Raptor Foundation, and we hope some of our students can visit the centre in the future.
1000 Trees Planted We are delighted to have planted 1000 trees thanks to Mrs York and The Woodland Trust! At St Edmund's, we are fortunate to be set in a remarkable 400 acres of green space, and we want to ensure that we are supporting rather than harming the nature around us. Throughout the past 18 months, in particular, time in nature has been a critical factor in supporting mental wellbeing. Across the globe, we are increasingly aware of the damage that has and continues to be carried out to our environment. Equally, we are increasingly educated on the small steps that we can take to prevent it. Our tree planting is coupled with our #PlantingNotPrinting initiative, whereby we are not printing our prospectuses this year and are instead providing them digitally and in a smaller, fully recyclable and eco-friendly version. Thank you for your continued support as we strive to make choices to benefit our environment. "This photograph marks the 1000 trees we have planted in the last 2 years with the help of the woodland trust!" - Mrs York, Geography Teacher
Sport Sport had to take a different format in College this year due to the ongoing pandemic. However, it was with great joy that the Trinity term saw the return of College sport as we know. We took full advantage of making the most of having fixtures against the opposition. We started the term with a tennis fixture against Brentwood, which saw student progression throughout the match. Tennis continued throughout the term with Saturday fixtures against Bancrofts and Highgate. Sadly, the great British Weather meant we lost the planned fixtures against Forest and Chigwell.
Miss Hebdon, Head of Girls' Games and Pole House Mistress
We entered a team into the U13 and U15 team tennis league, respectively, with great success. It was an extremely close match for the U15 players against Presdales. After the four singles, matches and two doubles matches, the scores were tied at 6-6, meaning a double tie break was to be played. Unfortunately, the girls were just pipped to the win with the final points of the tie break. The U15s went onto face Bishops Stortford College, where they had a convincing win over the opposition. U13s had an extremely competitive game against Presdales but unfortunately could not clinch the victory. Covid struck again to cancel the fixture against Haileybury due to positive cases with the opposition. Girls football was also a heavy feature of the term, with fixtures against Haileybury, Brentwood and Chigwell. Again, the rain stopped play for a couple of planned fixtures. The U15s had an excellent match against Haileybury, with end to end football. The girls took an early lead with but Haileurby fought back to level the game. Spurred on, St Edmund’s kept pressing, finding the back of the net again to win 4-3. The U14s had a great game at Brentwood with lots of oohs and ahhhhs from the parents. The girls put on a great display of football but couldn’t quite keep hold of the lead. Athletics with the final sport to feature throughout the term with students competing in the Hertfordshire County Athletics League. There were four league matches, and the girls did not disappoint in their performances. There were too many excellent performances to name them all. However, a few notable performances were from Ellie Pinsent and Keira Ferns in Shot Putt, Kiana Hawes in the 800m, Tabitha Woodhouse and Isla Roberts in the 1500m and Lois Lawrence in the Discus. All students represented the College with pride and performed exceptionally well throughout the competition.

Sport The Trinity term saw some wonderful performances in Cricket, Tennis and Athletics.
Cricket The students played many block fixtures, and the Elements side played A and B matches against numerous schools. They managed to also get to the County Cup Semi-Final, although narrowly lost out to St Albans in a thrilling match. Mr Cunnah, Head of Boys' Games and Challoner House Master
The Rudiments team also did well in the Cup Competitions and recorded an excellent win against John Warner School. Joss Rodman played some outstanding cricket and recorded some valuable runs.
The Grammar side also performed well and reached the Semi-Final of the tournament. Excellent performances throughout the season against Chigwell and John Warner were highlights. Syntax had a successful season and managed to put on a display in the County Cup. Good victories and performances by Harry Smith and Jed Chick throughout the season were valuable in their success.
Athletics On a cold and wet afternoon, the U14 and U16 athletics teams travelled to Ridlins park for the first County League Athletics meeting. Hitchin Boy’s and Stanborough School provided tough opposition in all events, but the St Edmund’s boy’s fought hard across track and field events. The meeting culminated with the relay events, which both teams performed well in. Notable performances from the U14 squad included Jos Rodman, who won the Javelin, Loni Akinola finishing 2nd in the 300m, Tom Hill 2nd in the 1500m and Aler Erdal, who finished 2nd in the 200m. In the U16 competition, Yibo Jin registered some encouraging distances in the triple jump to finish in 3rd place. A number of Grammar students competed well often against boys in the upper end of the age group. The weather held off for the U14 and U16 athletics team’s visit to Ridlins park for the second instalment of the Hertfordshire County League Athletics. Some great competition across the board with several notable performances throughout. Aler Erdal continued his form from last week with a 2nd place finish in the 200m. Ellie Pinsent threw outstandingly in the U14 shot put to finish in 1st place, with Charlie Haughey finishing 3rd in the U14 boys' event. Koray Erdal finished 3rd in the U14 boys 100m, with several other students exceeding their previous performances from last weeks event. In the penultimate race of the event, the U14 boys 4x100m relay team performed exceptionally well to finish 2nd in the race, rounding off what was a great afternoon of interschool competition.
Tennis St Edmund’s participated in the annual Aegon Championships in Junior and Intermediate Level. All students played very well and recorded victories against Bishop Stortford College and John Warner School. Close losses to Haileybury. Sadly due to Covid restrictions, the next round of the tournament has been put on hold.

Careers News Rhetoric Students Develop Skills for Future Employment
A group of Rhetoric II students have been working with Vicki Demirdjian, an Employability Coach, focusing on Post-18 Options. Mr Snell, Head of Careers
Each student has undertaken a Four-Step Module Process:
Module 1 – Person Centred Mapping – exploring individual aspirations, spending time deciphering what options are available, including University, Apprenticeship, Gap Year, and Internship. Through detailed and focused mind mapping, they have produced some rather interesting maps over the past term. Module 2 – Reverse Career Analysis – following on from information gained in Module 1, they have been looking at possible options and how to get there. This can be applying for an Apprenticeship, University, or work. Module 3 – Individual Roadmap – a clear and concise timeline of next actions and the tools needed to complete each one. Module 4 – Practical Skills – Interviewing Skills/techniques, Role Plays, CV Creation, LinkedIn Navigation, Job Search, Uni/Degree search, Job Boards, Recruitment Agencies, Business Media Profiles. Each Module has been conducted as a workshop which the students have found interactive, informative, and fun but, most importantly, will aid them with the confidence and knowledge to move ahead with positivity and focus after leaving St Edmund’s College. Vicki has really enjoyed working with the students and wishes them the best of luck in their chosen futures. If you would like further information, please contact Vicki Demirdjian, vicki@employmentcentre.co.uk
OE Sporting Success Congratulations to Mia and Courtney, U21 and U19 London Pulse National Performance League Double National Champions! An excellent achievement, we are very proud of your success.
Last Day of Term Snaps from our final day of term Fun Run! We hope they didn't bring too much mess home with them...
Speech Day Unfortunately, we had to cancel our original Speech Day plans following the postponement of the easing of lockdown restrictions. As we were unable to host a day of activities as planned, we instead created a digital Speech Day, consisting of a speech from Bishop Paul McAleenan, Mr Paul Raynes, Chair of Governors, Mr Matthew Mostyn, Headmaster, Mrs Kate MacDonald, Senior Deputy Head, Head Girl, Lucy Edmunds, and Head Boy, Yossaphol Songsri. While we were pleased to share the day with you virtually, we very much look forward to inviting you, with hope, in person next year.
