Building Connections

Winning second place in the Battle of the Brains was incredibly rewarding for Joshua Mendiola and his team. In just 24 hours, they developed an app to address health inequality, bonding over their shared connection to St. Edward’s University and a commitment to justice and equity.

Claire Lawrence ’24 Communication

Lawrence always knew she wanted to write. Her experience as editor-in-chief of Hilltop Views revealed that she also enjoys leading a newsroom and mentoring younger reporters. In fall 2022, Lawrence reported at the Austin AmericanStatesman newspaper.

Jeff Miner ’11

Part detective, part analyst, part storyteller, the Finance graduate was the global business lead for Google’s Creative Works team in New York City, where he helped companies improve their digital advertising to reach the right customers.

Work hard. Be flexible. Play the long game. Think about what you want to be doing at age 30, and find the jobs that will get you there. If you have your dream job right out of college, you have the wrong dream. You go to college to develop the skills and strategic thinking to find the right career path — because what you want is a career you can grow with, not a job.

Make learning a daily practice.

My field of work changes really quickly, so it’s up to me to continue educating myself so I can stay ahead of the curve. Stay curious and keep learning, even if you don’t think it applies directly to your job. When you’re genuinely curious, you’re able to be more open-minded and creative.

Austin Opportunities Kickstart Careers

Lupita Aguilar ’20, Forensic Science,  is a medical examiner investigator for Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office. She interned with TCME her senior year.

Jackson Wagner ’21,  Video Game Development,  was the quality assurance lead at Worldwalker Games in Austin. As an intern with Worldwalker his senior year, he helped develop Wildermyth, a new video game.

Myrka Moreno ’19, Digital Media Management, is an audience engagement producer at The 19th, an Austin-based independent newsroom. Her internships with The Texas Observer and Annie’s List gave her an edge in the job market.
