A NEW PROPOSAL TO DEAL WITH THE CURRENT BUILDING CRISIS
9
01 | VAN TIJDELIJK NAAR PERMANENT | DE GENERIEKE DRAGER | CASUS DE HALLEN
Situated in the city Amsterdam, this project searches for new strategies for urban development to deal with the current economical crisis. Based on intensive research and simple observations, a generic strategy has been developed in which general top-down interventions and local bottom-up initiatives can be converted into sustainable solutions: valuable solutions that accomodate short term wishes, generating opportunities for long term targets within a flexible design.
WHEN PROFESSIONALS FAIL TO FIND SOLUTIONS, SMALL, LOCAL INITIATIVES START TO EMERGE. 10
In 2010 a building stop was introduced in Amsterdam, resulting in a total stop for all new building projects. Because of a shortage on financing, development companies and property owners / clients fail to find solutions for the short term, leaving precious yet neglected, vacant spaces spread over the city. What’s interesting is that when you leave the problem as it is, opportunities will present by themselves. We see that temporary program for these spaces are initiated by local groups of people from the direct neighbourhood. Because of the participation of the neighbourhood, these temporary solutions are very well appreciated. If we recognise this trend and convert it into a strategy for urban development, interesting and valuable places can arise all over the city, forming a network of small scale initiatives on large scale.

Case study: De Hallen To test this strategy, a design was made on a specific site in Amsterdam West. Location analysis determined the top-down urban scheme in which bottom-up flexibility is possible. I propose to build two buildings as the first phase, to react on the current wishes for sport facilities, housing and live-work typologies. By leaving 3/5 of the plot empty, the project can grow in the future depending
on the availibility of financing, unpredictable circumstances, requirements and wishes. Because it is unpredictable how many years the time between the phases will be, the designs for these empty spaces will be made when it is really relevant. In the mean time they can be used for urban farming, something that is already initiated and respected by the neighbourhood.
RESPECT THE NEIGHBOURHOOD, RESPECT THE URBAN FARMING.

01 | VAN TIJDELIJK NAAR PERMANENT | DE GENERIEKE DRAGER | CASUS DE HALLEN
The main focus of the design was the design of the dwelling block. When thinking about the design of dwellings, I came to the conclusion that there is a big diversity of different dweller types, all with different needs. To react to the diversity of dwellers, dwellings must have a certain flexibility and variety. To create a wide variety of dwelling typologies, research have been conducted regarding the use of different circulation types and the relation with the adjacent dwellings. The research resulted in a toolset that can be used to shape a building mass that houses different dwelling typologies.
12
I started with a long slab of 80x20 meters. By substracting a volume in the middle, three different subvolumes emerge. Each subvolume then can have its own circulation type with different qualities. Within these volumes, different typologies are designed.
USING DIFFERENT CIRCULATION TYPES AUTOMATICALLY GENERATES DIFFERENT DWELLING TYPES.

To maintain a high level of flexibility within the dwellings, I tried to design the dwellings as empty as possible. The influence of the user was an important factor for me. When you give dwellers more influence in the design of the dwelling, better dwellings can be made that suits the user’s needs and wishes.
4. Home at work 120 m2 BVO 3x
8. Skylight 60 m2 BVO 8x
Therefor, Instead of finished dwellings, I propose unfinished open structures. Each structure is characterized by one central space. The rest of the dwelling are left ‘undefined’. Functions become clear when users respond to the space, resulting in unique dwellings within a large housing block.

THE DIFFERENT FACES OF THE BUILDING RESPONSES TO THE PARADOX OF FLEXIBLE ARCHITECTURE IN A FORMAL CONTEXT.
18
The facade acts as the mediating layer between the individuality of the dwellings and the collectivity of the block within its context. The facade is made of standard HSB elements that can be adjusted to meet the needs of the spaces inside. To make sure the block fits in its context, a fiberglass cloth is placed in front of the facade, filtering the amount of visible details in relation to the viewing distance towards the building.

This project is situated in Antwerp, Belgium. The city is characterized by its diversity of neighbourhoods and diversity of people. Where on city scale diversity can be seen as a positive factor, on social scale unfortunately the diversity leads to clashes betweel social groups. This project searches for architectural solutions that contributes to the improvement of cultural tolerance. On a plot of 800 x 80 meters, typical closed blocks are placed. By opening up the inner courtyards, new types of open, collective spaces arise that can be linked to each other to create a public route through the project. By using different themes and ambiences, distinction can be made between the different collective spaces of the project. 22
BY INJECTING THE DIFFERENT COLLECTIVE SPACES WITH SPECIFIC PROGRAM, AN INTERESTING MIX OF PLACES CAN ARISE.
23

24
Dwellings The building blocks contains different dwelling typologies with different sizes, variying from a one person household to a familiy dwelling. The dwellings are defined by the placement of the core element containing the bathroom, kitchen, bedroom and storage. By opening sliding doors, the spaces around the core becomes one continuous space.
Facade The facade is an important element within this project. We have added moveable perforated aluminium panels to each building block. Depending on the ambience of the collective space it’s linked, different perforation patterns are designed. For instance, the urban forest blocks shows a pattern of abstracted tree branches, and the water square blocks shows an image of falling water drops. Each dweller has the freedom to slide the panels. By doing this, the dweller expresses his individuality without losing the collective image.
THE FACADE IS IS AN EXPRESSION OF THE COLLECTIVE OUTSIDE AND THE INDIVIDUAL INSIDE.

03 | OFFICE HOUSE
THE LIVING ROOM ACTS AS AN INFORMAL IN-BETWEEN SPACE WHERE LEISURE AND WORK CAN BE COMBINED.
26
Office house is the result of a 1-day master class workshop held by architect Dick van Gameren. Within a given envelop of 15 x 8 x 3 meters, a home/work dwelling design had to be made for a 1-person household. The goal of this workshop was to think about the relation between living and working program. When I thought about the combination of living and working, I started to think of a typical user profile and the way such a user would use a home-work dwelling. The idea of combining living and working is interesting, but it
can either have a positive or a negative outcome. Ideally, the combination of the program can for expample improve the work performance or save travelling time. But the pressence of work so close to home can affect the balance
LIVING SPACE MEDIATES BETWEEN SLEEP AND WORK.
between social and work life where one can overshadow the other, resulting in a chaotic lifestyle and on the long term perhaps even a loss of notion of life. To prevent this from happening, I propose to create formal and informal spaces. The dwelling is divided into 3 areas, where the central living area acts as an informal space that mediates between the formal sleeping and working spaces. Both sleeping and working space are created for its essential purpose. Because of the soft borders between spaces,
transitions through spaces are stimulated during the day. Inside the central space the user is confronted with both realities of living and working, to prevent the dweller from being lazy, unresponsible as well as overexhaustion, burnouts, stress etc.

LIBRARY AS CATALYST - TRANSITION FROM COLLECTIVE TO THE INDIVIDUAL.

04 | JAVAPLEIN - TRANSITIONS
The way libraries are used changed over time. Where the library used to be a place of gaining knowledge for individuals through the medium books, it now has become a place where different program from (digital) learning to public activities are mixed together. ‘Javaplein - Transitions’ proposes a programmatic organization from the more collective to the more individual progam. Derived from the programmatic organization, subtle changes in spatial qualties where defined to guide the user through the building and its various program. Experiencing floor to floor transitions will expose its true architectural purpose. The indische buurt is known as a neighborhood with insufficient public outside space. Located on the intersection of 3 important streets, the goal of the project is to stimulate social interaction in the neigbourhood. With the addition of a public library and a large public square, the design proposal creates the possibility for people to meet. The public activities that can happen on the square is drawn into the librariy itself. The bottom floors of the library facilitates the more public program such as a restaurant, exhibition space and café. The upper floor facilitates the more private program such as
books section and reading rooms. The offices are situated on the top floor. The building is characterized by the atrium in the center of the building. To adapt the spatial qualities to the programmatic organization, different architectural interventions were made. By gradually decreasing the dimensions of the atrium void as well as decreasing the ceiling heights, bottom floors have a more public character and upper floors will have a more intimate characters allowing more private program to happen. To intensify this character, the facade becomes more closed as you go up.
EXPERIENCING FLOOR TO FLOOR TRANSITIONS WILL EXPOSE ITS TRUE ARCHITECTURAL PURPOSE. 30

LOCAL MATERIALS AND BUILDING METHODS
1 out of 6 inhabitants of Rio de Janeiro lives in a favela (slum). Why? Can it be different? Design & Build aims to intensify the international and multidisciplinary debate about how to improve housing conditions in fast growing slums. The project addresses an issue that is relatively neglected by architecture and engineering courses at most universities in Europe: the worldwide rapidly increasing numbers of residents of slums and other forms of informal settlement. The project has four phases: Research, Design, Building and Evaluation. With our project, bamboo, we searched for a generic strategy based on the characteristic organic shape and growth of favela’s, combined with a flexible and expandable building concept for the houses. Based on the skills and capabilities of dwellers, we propose a new building system made from sustainable materials which dwellers can use to build their own homes in a safe way.
36
USING LOCAL MATERIALS AND BUILDING METHODS WILL BENEFIT THE DURABILITY OF THE BUILDING ELEMENT.
The element system designed by us is a big improvement compared to the current building method. The structure and stability of the element as well as the houses created with it are carefully designed to be safe, as long as the building requirements are met. On top of that it is a relatively simple system, wich dwellers can use by themselve without the help of professionals. With a good construction manual we can learn the future residents how to build their own house. The element itself is made of sustainable materials. The load bearing structure in the element is made of bamboo,
a material that can grow up to 1 meter per day in Brazil because of the specific Brazilian climate. The finishing can be done with a natural loam plaster onto a plate of braided bamboo. If we can esablish mass-production of the elements, build costs will be lower. Due to the fact that the system is generic, with some small changes in the element, the system can be used on other locations and countries where the problem of slums is present.

TESTING THE BUILDING METHOD - CASE STUDY: FAVELA MORRO DA MANGUEIRA
We interpreted the assignment to design 30 to 40 social houses in the neigbourhood of favela Morro da Mangueira. We used the given location as an example to show the possibilities of our generic element system and how the system can react to its specific context. The plot is located at the bottom of the favela. In this plan, important informal routes and facilities are kept and accentuated with housing slabs. The idea is that step by step, the whole favela will be replaced with the building
42
system to provide safe dwellings and infrastructure for the dwellers. The already existing community center will be renovated for educational purpose and an additional element factory will be placed to serve te rest of the favela. By implementing a factory, we solve 2 problems: Creating a save building method and create jobs. The abandoned gated millitary base across the street can be transofrmed into a bamboo plantage, making the plan self sustaining.
