“I’m from a small town outside of Corning, N.Y., where most people get a factory job, marry young, and stay put. I wanted to be a teacher and thought about going to a community college, but I hadn’t considered a four-year school. Then I heard about Nazareth through a guidance counselor. Nazareth has good people, people who really know my face and my name. I will be the first in my family to graduate with a four-year degree, and I definitely plan to get a master’s degree. I never thought I’d push myself so hard and achieve so much. I feel honored and blessed to have this experience.” chanel wright ‘08, undergraduate student,

impact on students “My experiences working in a corporate environment left me eager for change. I was ready for a new career and a new perspective on life. Looking back, though, I don’t think I expected all this. With so many opportunities, it’s impossible to get through a day without smiling at the possibilities ahead. At the School of Education, I know I am doing what I was meant to do. It might sound cliché, but when you find yourself at a fork in the road and you choose the right path, it’s exhilarating. I think that opportunity is here for everyone.” sarah schwenk ‘09, graduate student, Master of Science, inclusive education (childhood)

“At Nazareth, we really do transform students’ lives. The act of transformation involves engagement and connection. In chemistry, getting undergraduates involved in research is key. Faculty members engage with students one-on-one; we get to know them, and they us. Take Kevin: a sophomore, a good student but very quiet and reserved. Doing research has helped him become more confident, more involved. He is considering going to Spain to continue research we’re doing collaboratively with international colleagues. A shy sophomore may turn into a junior who goes abroad to pursue his passion — that’s transformation.”

Through What We Offer A broad liberal arts education integrated with professional preparation in service to the community. These three elements, interwoven and inextricable, form the nexus of the Nazareth experience. Musicians who put their gifts to practical use as music therapists. Math majors who understand the arts as an expression of the human spirit. Students in the health sciences who volunteer in our free clinics. Inside the classroom and out, we equip students to see the world through multiple lenses.

By Who We Are A cohesive college community, more like a family than a campus. Our students, many living away from home for the first time, are immersed in an environment that is deeply supportive and challenging at the same time. Engaged faculty exhibit genuine commitment to student success, and small class sizes help reinforce the teacher-student bond and forge peer-to-peer connections that often last a lifetime.

In What We Do A strong sense of civic engagement that prepares students to be citizens as well as professionals. At Nazareth, it is never enough to simply know. We encourage students to put their knowledge to work in the service of others; community outreach is in our genetic makeup. As individuals we improve the small space on which we stand; collectively, we grow and strengthen the community in which we live.

Investing now in people, programs, and infrastructure will make a difference in our students’ lives for decades to come.

The campaign will not only enhance today’s services to the community, it will influence the future by strengthening core competencies and enriching the region’s artistic environment.

an investment in nazareth is an investment in the region and the nation Addressing Critical Shortages In keeping with our focus on the future, Nazareth educates students in health professions facing critical shortages — nurses, physical and speech therapists. Because more than 60 percent of our graduates remain in the Rochester area, the community is the direct beneficiary.

school districts graduate from Nazareth’s School of Education — and hundreds more come to us for continuing education — our heightened emphasis on math and science education will have a direct impact on the region’s ability to fill positions in health care, technology, and other disciplines dependent on those skills.

Hone a Competitive Edge To compete regionally, nationally, and internationally, America needs students with sharper math and science skills. Since nearly one-third of all teachers in area

Our Commitment To The Arts For over 40 years, Nazareth College has served as an artistic hub for the region. Our Arts Center welcomes 75,000 annually to the area’s premier mid-size theater, while the Rochester Children’s Theatre reaches 20,000 youngsters through performances and classes. Nazareth’s reputation for presenting emerging dance troupes is positioning the entire area as a national center for dance.

A Good Citizen Whether providing free rehabilitative health services to nearly 1,000 people a year, or organizing volunteers at Clairvaux Farm, Nazareth sets the bar high for civic engagement. Our focus on service attracts the best partners: Our work with Xerox and Kodak made science magic for scores of 5th to 9th graders attending a Harry Potterthemed summer camp, and Nazareth’s leadership helped garner $1 million in seed money for a math and science high school.

“Attracting and retaining young professionals is critical to Rochester’s economic growth. It is crucial that we provide opportunities for young people to become involved and gain first-hand knowledge of the issues facing their community, thereby stimulating a desire to remain and work to make it better. Nazareth College and its students put this philosophy into practice every day, and we are a better community as a result.” mayor robert j. duffy

impactoncommunity “The physical therapy clinic at Nazareth is wonderful. The students are the wonderful ones — fresh and full of ideas. They’re fun to be around, and their enthusiasm is contagious. I had a lot of frustration at other facilities, and the expense of co-pays or out-of-pocket costs were too much. It’s discouraging to be told your allotment of physical therapy sessions has been reached when you still need the care. At Nazareth, they commit to you — and give you support — for the long term.” beth ruckert, patient, Physical Therapy Clinic, two years at the clinic

“Nazareth College graduates are a vital part of the teaching community in Rochester’s schools. Their particular emphasis on math and science adds value to our instructional program and is crucial to our community’s future. We are fortunate to have so many of our teachers come to us from Nazareth. The quality of the education they receive is evident from the moment they step into the classroom with their students.” bill cala, acting superintendent, Rochester City School District 4

“This is a moment when there is more interest in and appreciation of arts and culture in this community than we have had in several decades. There’s a huge momentum. Nazareth has a long-standing history of strength in the visual and performing arts, and this effort of President Braveman’s to enhance the performance space at Nazareth is going to make the College even more important and integral to showcasing the arts in Rochester.”

As we look to our future, three clear paths emerge.

sarah e. lentini, president and ceo, Arts and Cultural Council for Greater Rochester

strengthening the college, enriching the community Building a Stronger Nazareth Focusing first on our own campus, we want to build an identity commensurate with the reality of the Nazareth experience. We must ensure that all students, regardless of economic status, can access what we offer. We will create greater opportunities for research and student-faculty engagement and grow new academic centers in areas that speak to the future, such as a Center for Interfaith Study & Dialogue.

Preparing Teachers and Healthcare Providers A critical shortage of educators and healthcare professionals undercuts America’s ability to innovate, compete, and prevent and treat disease. Nazareth’s singular strengths in those areas position us perfectly to respond. By improving our math and science capabilities, we enhance our preparation of classroom teachers and healthcare practitioners and enrich the region’s corporate legacy of innovation and technology.

Positioning the Region as a Cultural Destination Among the many lessons we have learned as a leader in the arts, three stand out. Culture enriches. Creativity heals. Arts attract. Recognizing that nearly all our students either participate in music, art, and theatre courses or serve as spectators, we must enhance resources to match demand and better prepare those who practice in the growing fields of music and art therapy. An expanded Arts Center will build on existing strengths and help position the entire community as a cultural destination.

emerges “Our students come to us knowing how to succeed within the framework of conformity that they’ve lived in. We challenge them with diversity and difference, helping them to grow through significant engagement with faculty, community, and each other. Again and again students cite that as the core of their Nazareth experience. Our role here is to make the world big and raise the students’ confidence in their ability to engage it.” deborah dooley, dean, College of Arts and Sciences

“When people hear theater, they think of New York City. When people hear motion picture industry, they think of Los Angeles. When people hear math and science education, they should think of Rochester.” charles schumer, senator from new york

now… More than ever before, the world needs what we have. • We are positioned at the heart of a regional conversation that relies on Nazareth’s expertise in education, health care, and the arts. • We are forging relationships with Rochester-area colleges and universities that complement, rather than compete with, our agenda. • We are building partnerships with international corporations headquartered here that will leverage our strengths and benefit the College as well as the community. We enlist your support to help us meet the demand.

moment “Nazareth has reached a special point in time; a confluence of strengths and people combine to make this our moment. We have a beautiful campus, a fully committed board, a strong sense of community, a clear vision, and a great president. As a small school, we make a great investment, for gifts have so much more of an impact here. What we do now will make a difference in our future.” judy wilmot linehan, chair, Board of Trustees

A new Center for Math and Science will enable us to enhance preparation of students and teachers in these critical skills.

building a math and science center: $18 million

to build

10

We Have We Can • A strong core curriculum in the liberal arts. We envision a Center that will: • The broadest array of healthcare degrees in the region. • Shape leaders in math and science • A superb track record in educating teachers. education. • Improve our ability to deliver critical components of a quality liberal arts education. • Prepare healthcare professionals who can couple compassion with the technologically advanced care that modern medicine requires. • Create summer programs for primary and secondary school children that support and enhance what they learn during the academic year. • Design continuing education programs for math and science teachers who wish to learn fresh techniques and approaches to spark interest in the classroom. • Actively encourage and support Nazareth faculty and student research in math and science.

We Ask Ambitious plans demand facilities to match. Our new Center requires: • New space that will offer state-of-theart equipment — including biology and chemistry labs equipped with the technology needed for advanced coursework and research. • Smart classrooms to accommodate a growing student body — space that will complement new teaching methods, including case studies, group learning, open and guided inquiry, and studentlead workshops. • Updated computer technology and scientific instrumentation throughout. • A safe, open, and attractive environment that will afford easier opportunities for interdisciplinary conversation and student interaction.

expanding the arts center: $10 million

to expand

We Have • Broad student engagement and participation in the arts. • Strong professional programs that prepare students as music and art therapists. • A 40-year track record as an important part of the region’s artistic community. • Singular strengths in dance that raise the stature of the entire region in the performing arts.

We Can • Support an ever-growing student population as individual artists, practitioners, and spectators. • Expand our music program — one of Nazareth’s fastest growing — to accommodate more students and offer better learning, rehearsal, and performing spaces. • Stage a much wider variety of theatrical and dance performances and develop a summer dance program that attracts people to the region. • Provide dedicated, secure exhibition space that offers essential gallery experience for our studio and fine arts students, faculty, and community artists.

An expanded Arts Center will grow our artistic footprint and enhance the stature of both school and community.

12

We Ask Our dreams far outstrip our current facilities; the aging infrastructure of the Callahan Theater, its inflexible design, and the lack of suitable classroom, practice, and exhibition space demand attention. We must: • Update the acoustics, lighting, seating, and stage design of the Callahan Theater, creating a traditional proscenium design more suitable to dance and a wider variety of theatrical performances. • Add new classrooms and labs for teaching and practicing therapeutic arts and create an acoustically superior student performance hall that will seat 800 people and allow choral, concert, and orchestral ensembles to perform together. • Create a secure art display space where students and community artists can learn exhibition and curatorial practices, as well as display their artwork. • Add performance and practice spaces for students in music and theatre courses. • Design and install adequate ventilation for the studio arts spaces to ensure a healthy environment.

enhancing the endowment: $25 million A strong endowment represents the difference between a good school and a great one. Good schools have select students, a solid curriculum, an engaged faculty. Great schools have the means to capitalize on them, to seize opportunities, to broaden access and diversify the student body, to enrich faculty. To innovate. To lead. To grow the College, we must grow the endowment. In quality, we are more than commensurate with our peers; in resources, we are not. The average endowment per student for peer schools is $126,000; Nazareth’s is $20,000. We narrow the gap with tuition dollars, but to be dependent on tuition is to be vulnerable to the vagaries of a fluctuating economy and changing demographics. An expanded endowment will secure our future in critical ways. Increasing Access Many Nazareth students come from families of modest means, and scholarship assistance often determines their ability

to attend college. In 2006, we provided 96 percent of our full-time undergraduates with scholarship or gift assistance. The College is committed to helping every qualified student take full advantage of the Nazareth experience. This year, doing so meant allocating nearly $12 million in institutional funds. Enhancing Faculty Nazareth expects the best from its students; with endowment funding, we ensure that faculty members are also able to give their best. Enriching faculty enriches students; we look to increase opportunities for facultystudent research, lessen teaching loads to promote scholarship, and facilitate participation in conferences, workshops, and other professional opportunities that enable faculty to remain at the top of their fields. Broadening Perspective International education and travel are hallmarks of an academic experience in a global society. Nazareth is capitalizing on the many benefits to students and faculty that result from our growing partnerships with institutions worldwide. The endow-

ment supports international enrichment programs of all kinds — from traditional study-abroad opportunities to campus visits by international scholars who broaden our thinking. Greater Engagement Nazareth College is committed to community. What students do off campus is as critical to their development as what they do on it. Increased endowment will allow us to enhance opportunities for students to engage the community, expand the service-learning component of our curriculum, and enrich our teaching through scholarship by creating a new Center for Civic Engagement. The Heritage Fund Contributions to our Heritage Fund allow us to maintain the beauty and functionality of campus buildings. Income is used for the renovation and maintenance of our architecturally notable neo-Gothic campus buildings, some of which date back to the early 1940s.

growing the nazareth fund: $7 million If a strong endowment helps realize the potential of the future, a healthy annual fund enhances the possibilities of the present. Influencing Individual Lives Your gift to the Nazareth Fund has a direct and immediate impact on academic and campus life. Annual giving is a collective effort that, more than any other initiative,

14

influences individual lives. The Nazareth Fund supports essential services to students, such as the First Year Program and Career Counseling Services. A much-needed source of income, the Fund buys print and electronic reference materials for our library and strongly supports athletic programming.

“A strong endowment ensures Nazareth’s future and allows us to do excellent work consistently. It provides scholarships that help to diversify our student body and give students who have the grades but not the financial resources the opportunity to be here. Diversity is a very important part of the college experience. Like a liberal arts education, a diverse campus gives you a broader perspective on the world and better prepares you for what the future holds.” andrea costanza, nazareth alumna

toenhance “At Nazareth you learn to think independently. The professors not only challenge you to form opinions, but they also teach you to back those opinions up, to effectively communicate your perspective. I am grateful for the scholarship that enabled me to be here and to have this opportunity, and I definitely want to go on to graduate school in education research. The numbers, data, and analyses can stimulate improvement in our education system. The question becomes: What will I contribute?” scott paeplow ‘08, undergraduate student,

Expanding Alumni Participation The Nazareth Fund also connects our alumni to the College and gives them a way to continue our legacy of making a difference. We seek to increase our alumni participation rate from 20 percent to 27 percent and, over the course of the campaign, make an additional $7 million available.

Bachelor of Music, music education with a minor in mathematics

“Why is a strong endowment important? It allows us to offer more scholarships, which provide access to a quality education to those who are more than capable but cannot begin to afford the cost of a Nazareth education. It enables us to support international study, broadening students’ perspectives and preparing them to live in a global society. It helps us provide care to the underserved on and off campus and supports our focus on civic engagement. In short, it supports access, education, and engagement and strengthens the entire Nazareth experience.” shirley szekeres, dean, School of Health and Human Services
