THE SANSOM STREET PROJECT

WINDOWS ON TOMORROW: A new building and rooftop garden will be at the center of the Sansom Street Project. On the cover, we see a future view of the garden from Silverman Hall's main staircase.

INVITING SPACES

OPEN VIEWS: A dramatic, translucent entry hall to the new building signals our welcoming character, a hallmark of Penn Law.

LEAD THE SANSOM STREET PROJECT will unite our compact campus, reflect our dynamic growth and create spaces that

support our core strengths.

Replacing the existing Sansom Street structure, the new building will maximize space, beginning with a dedicated

floor for OUR WORLD-CLASS FACULTY, almost 50 percent larger than a decade ago. Its greater openness will also

underscore OUR CROSS-DISCIPLINARY FOCUS, with 30 joint-degree and certificate programs that bring other Penn

faculty and students to us — and take us across campus.

In the same footprint as the old building, OUR STUDENT-CENTERED, INTIMATE ENVIRONMENT will flourish, stronger

than ever. New hallways, doors and bridges strengthen connections. New crossroads will promote collaboration and

dialogue among faculty and students, faculty and colleagues, and students and peers — advancing the life of the

mind at Penn Law.

SMART DESIGN PENN LAW will soon have an intimate, modern home second to none. Kennedy & Violich Architecture has captured the Law School’s essence in a new building that is timeless and yet reflects our time. Its design blurs the division between outdoors and indoors, as natural light plays a central role throughout. The façade will project a different tone depending on the time of day. An innovative system of light wells and photo-sensors will distribute daylight into corridors, conserving energy, and will synch with interior lights to respond to cloudy days and evening's approach. The stunning rooftop garden, the first at any law school, tops off the new building.

ONE HOME: The Sansom Street Project casts Penn Law in a modern light while it comfortably connects with our three historic structures.

UNIFYING THE CAMPUS RIGHT HEIGHT: The new building's dimensions will maximize both space and light and fit comfortably with the surroundings.

NESTLED BETWEEN Silverman and Tanenbaum Halls, the new building ties together the Penn Law community more tightly than ever — often in highly inventive ways, such as a bridge across the roof of The Goat. The striking new entrance will put out a welcome mat, while complementing the historic rowhomes and popular businesses on the south side of Sansom Street.

BEST FOOT FORWARD: For the first time, an entrance, clearly visible from the street, creates a fitting introduction to Penn Law.

SECRET GARDEN: While the courtyard will be the greenest space visible at street level, the green rooftop above will become a new Penn Law destination.

HARDLY MOOT: A modern, light-infused courtroom will rival any space of its kind.

LIGHT PALETTE: A translucent Vermont marble used for the new Sansom Street entrance will support the bright, open feel of the overall design.

COMMUNITY

CONNECTED MODERN COMMUNITY: Stepping into the new building, students will enter a comfortable, relaxed environment, featuring a brand-new lounge, the renovated Goat and many other collaborative spaces.

DYNAMIC SPACE: A roomy, two-tier auditorium will accommodate an entire class, host major lectures and convert into a stateof-the-art teaching space.

A LASTING DIFFERENCE The $33-million, 40,000-square-foot Sansom Street Project will do more than raise a new building. It will raise Penn Law’s sights for the future. Part of a decade-long capital investment of more than $50 million, the Project follows a multi-year, top-to-bottom renovation of Penn Law's other three buildings. Together, these coordinated efforts have helped Penn Law keep pace as we grow our faculty and curricula. Now it is time to add this final, fitting stroke to our master plan, signifying our pride of place on Penn’s campus and among leading law schools. In the same school where, for 220 years, bold ideas have taken root and new legal disciplines have been nurtured, this new building will take our history fully forward in the 21st century. The new building’s innovative design — from its green attributes to the integration of past, present and future — will help us attract outstanding students and retain top-tier faculty. It will ensure Penn Law stays flexible and prepared for new advances. It will enhance our warm environment, support faculty and students, and promote the cross-collaborations that are central to educational excellence at Penn Law.
