ON OUR SHOULDERS FOR THE NEXT GENERATION AT UNIVERSITY OF THE SCIENCES
A POWERFUL GIFT SCHOLARSHIPS CHANGE LIVES.
“IF I HAVE SEEN FURTHER, IT IS ONLY BY STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS.” — SIR ISAAC NEWTON
“WE MUST EMPOWER OUR STUDENTS TO SEE WHAT IS POSSIBLE AND TO UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY CAN MAKE POSSIBLE FOR OTHERS.” — PHILIP P. GERBINO, PHARM.D., PRESIDENT, UNIVERSITY OF THE SCIENCES
Donors who invest in scholarships at University of the Sciences support the education and careers of young people who might otherwise be left out. Many are the first in their families to go to college, become American citizens and launch careers in science and health care. That’s why each year we join with our scholarship donors to secure so many of our students’ futures. In 2008–09, we provided more than $22.3 million in direct support to 1,907 students. We are proud to recommit to this priority and broaden its impact through On Our Shoulders, University of the Sciences’ multi-milliondollar campaign for new and increased scholarship funding. Our success will bring more students and their talents to University of the Sciences and make us more competitive among peer institutions. Most important, success will have a deeply personal impact, enabling scholarship recipients to graduate with less debt and focus fully on their careers in fields that are changing the world. WE ASK YOU TO JOIN US IN INVESTING IN THE NEXT GENERATION — AND IN OUR COLLECTIVE FUTURE.

A DREAM RENEWED
ALWAYS LEND A HAND. Marvin Samson lives by this golden rule. At age 10, Samson found a muchneeded afterschool job by helping a neighborhood pharmacist. He worked at the drugstore all through high school, learning the pharmaceutical business from the ground up. Decades later, Samson is helping students at University of the Sciences chart their own futures, even as he pays tribute to that first mentor, who lent him a hand. “Mickey Lev was a 1941 University of the Sciences graduate. He taught me what it meant to be a community pharmacist: not just knowing customers and listening to them but often serving as the first line of medical treatment. Doctors would sometimes write ‘P.P.’ — ‘poor person’ — on a prescription. Mickey considered it our obligation to make that medication affordable.” But Samson couldn’t afford to attend University of the Sciences, so Lev set Samson on his career path by introducing Samson to fellow alum Herb Garde ‘48, who ran a small pharmaceutical business. Now, the founder and CEO of Samson Medical Technologies wants to give young people the chance he did not have. From chairing the University’s last capital campaign to a deep, ongoing commitment to fund scholarships, Samson sees his support as “an opportunity to live the American dream twice” by nurturing the dreams of others. “When you help someone get a good education, it’s going to help that person for the rest of his life,” says Samson. “I feel blessed to have the chance to influence other Mickey Levs and Herb Gardes. When you grow up like I did, you simply help out whenever you can.”
DID YOU KNOW? BETWEEN 2005 AND 2009, UNIVERSITY OF THE SCIENCES DONORS CONTRIBUTED MORE THAN $6.2 MILLION TO SCHOLARSHIPS, INCLUDING $5.3 MILLION IN GIFTS TO ESTABLISH NEW ENDOWED FUNDS AND GROW EXISTING ENDOWED FUNDS.
REACH ACROSS GENERATIONS
THE LONG LIST OF DONORS who have supported financial aid at University of the Sciences begins with the individuals, families and graduating classes who have established more than 150 ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS and made gifts to existing endowed scholarships. To create a new endowed scholarship, a gift of $50,000 or more, which can be made over a period of one to five years, is carefully invested to provide financial support in perpetuity. You can name the fund in honor of a loved one, family member or mentor, perpetuating that name as well. Once the scholarship is fully funded, a portion of its annual earnings will benefit one or more students who meet the preferred qualifications of the scholarship. In addition to receiving statements of your fund’s worth, you will see its lasting value first-hand through profiles and opportunities to meet your scholarship students.

IN HER SHOES
ANGELA HOANG ’14 still lived in Vietnam when she first heard her parents speak about America. There, they said, the family could find opportunities. Maybe their three children would become the first in the family to pursue college degrees. Today, Angela is living the American dream — and realizing her parents’ aspirations — as a student in the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy’s intensive, six-year Pharm.D. program. “Pharmacy is the only thing I ever wanted to do,” she says. “Many people can’t go to the doctor all the time. Pharmacists are the ones who can help guide their healthcare decisions.” Angela appreciates the intimate environment, accessible teachers and challenging coursework at University of the Sciences. But what has perhaps shaped her experience most so far is becoming the first recipient of the Dr. Susan M. Blyskal Endowed Scholarship. “I met Dr. Blyskal on the day she found out about the scholarship. Her husband had named it for her as a special birthday present,” Angela recalls. “She was crying. Dr. Blyskal is also a pharmacist — and an immigrant. That means a lot to me.” Angela hopes she is setting an example for her brother and sister as they think ahead to higher education. She would like to continue that tradition of achievement beyond her family, too, possibly as a scholarship donor. “One day I would like to give back, just like the Blyskals. After all, helping others achieve the American dream is part of the American dream.”
CHANGE A LIFE TODAY
MANY University of the Sciences students benefit from the immediate impact of NON-ENDOWED NAMED SCHOLARSHIPS. An individual or organization may create this kind of scholarship by pledging a specific sum each year, beginning with a minimum outright gift of $10,000 — or $2,000 a year over five years.
DID YOU KNOW? DESPITE OUR STRONG FINANCIAL AID PROGRAMS, 2009 GRADUATES FROM UNIVERSITY OF THE SCIENCES INCURRED AN AVERAGE DEBT OF BETWEEN $70,000 AND $104,000, DEPENDING ON THEIR
Donors to these scholarships see the value of translating their giving into action. Unlike a gift to establish an endowed fund, a gift for a non-endowed named scholarship can be spent right away. It does not accrue over time but carries some of the same benefits as its endowed counterpart, including naming rights, the ability to specify preferred qualifications of the recipients, a profile of the current recipient and the opportunity to meet the young person whose education you are helping support.

PERSONAL CONNECTIONS
FAMILY COMES FIRST for Maria Sebastian ‘13. She credits her family for her work ethic, strong values and long-standing desire to go into health care. Maria’s mother is a registered nurse, and other relatives include a radiologist, speech therapist and physical therapist. At Samson College of Health Sciences, Maria found the perfect program, a five-year masters track in occupational therapy, and the added bonus of a scholarship that is helping her achieve her goals. In a recent letter, Maria thanked the family of Harry Schwartz, Class of 1923, and his wife, Lena, who first endowed her scholarship. “Any amount of financial aid is a tremendous help,” she says. “Next year my parents will have all three children in college. I want to do my part to help my parents provide me with an education.” True to her words, Maria does more, logging hours as a work-study student and returning to Northeast Philadelphia on weekends to maintain a Saturday job. Still, she hopes for the opportunity to thank a Schwartz family member in person. “I want to explain how much this career path means to me. Becoming an occupational therapist will allow me to build more personal connections with my patients," she says. “Working with a patient to achieve a milestone is satisfying. No matter how small the improvement, it will make someone’s life measurably better.” Maria hopes one day to pay back what she is receiving. “If I have the resources, I want to offer scholarships to future students at the University. I want to give other students the opportunity that the Schwartz family gave me. Everything we do reflects who we are.”
DID YOU KNOW? UNIVERSITY OF THE SCIENCES PREPARES STUDENTS FOR SOME OF THE FASTESTGROWING SCIENCE AND HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONS. FOR EXAMPLE, BETWEEN 2008 AND 2018, THERE WILL BE 17 PERCENT MORE PHARMACISTS, 26 PERCENT MORE OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS AND 39 PERCENT MORE PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS IN THIS COUNTRY.

EVERY DOLLAR COUNTS
STUDENTS MAY NOT KNOW THEM BY NAME, but the hundreds of University of the Sciences donors who designate their annual gifts to the GENERAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND make a lasting contribution to the lives they touch. Every scholarship gift of less than $10,000 helps grow the general scholarship fund and EVERY GIFT COUNTS. University of the Sciences places a high priority on positioning our graduating students for success in their chosen fields. Beyond educational attainment, that means helping graduates leave with less debt to burden them and their families. Providing that help is most challenging in years when the economy is in flux and there are fewer resources to go around. Each and every dollar for scholarships gives us more capacity to connect students with the best education and the brightest futures.
