Inujima’s identity of the granite is slowly getting lost. To prevent this event, our proposal is to revitalize the Inujima’s stone in a wide multidisciplinary project. The aim of the project is to reconcile the rebirth of the Inujima’s granite with a series of activities that will refer in different ways to the stone. The main quarry site will be the new identity “heart”, from which a path will start or end. Along the path will rise, in different positions in relationship with the surface of the island, several places with different thematic areas (art, entertainment, culture, research and technique), willing to promote and identify the island and its historical stone. From a landscape point of view, the architecture of the pavilions and the path will adapt themselves to the orography and the hills of the island, creating a organic bond between nature and construction. In relationship with every thematic area identified, the pavilions will host different activities aimed at increasing the recognizability, the potential of the territory and therefore inform and raise awareness on the issues inherent in the matter of Inujima’s granite uses, history and peculiarities, inviting to an active participation both for professionals and local people. The pavilions will host art exhibitions, live acting performances, narrations of the history, the myths and legends of the stone, and workshops. During the workshops, master craftsmen will be invited to have the opportunity and the honor of working with the precious granite of the island again, teaching younger artists technics and secrets of the processing of this stone. The products of these workshops, which can be small sculptures, design or furniture objects, or home decorations, will have the “MADE IN INUJIMA” label, certifying the originality of the product. We like the idea of bonding and linking together stone, ground (intended as the surface of the island) and water, three important elements of Inujima natural environment, fueling a dialogue that continues through the architecture.

MASTERPLAN 1:5000

Horizontal connection

An horizontal connection passing through the centre of the island can unite the two historically characteristic poles of the island. The path, developed between some ponds, will connect the historical area already restored (dashed black) and the one still abandoned (dashed red).

Central Void

The arrangement of major tourist interest (in black) highlights a large central void (in red) which can act as a re-connecting element.

03

Active and inactive

Lived areas (grey dots) cover only certain parts of the island, creating voids and unexplored areas (red dots). These areas are characterized by a natural landscape, within which the presence of man is manifested only by large ponds due to the extraction of granite.

Accessibility

The island can be reached via a 5-minute ferry trip from the mainland. On the island there are no cars, the existing roads are narrow and developed mostly along the outer edges of the island. The central part is currently still very wild and untouched.

Inujima Granite Learning Center is located

in the stone quarry. The project proposal is divided into two parts: a more didactic and tourist part towards the East, and a more technical one to the West, where is placed the workshop itself at the same evel of the quarry.

Belvedere is located in the centre of the island and it is formed from the path that rises in altitude to allow the view of Inujima. It also allows the view toward two ancient Shrines dedicated to the Gods of stone of the island.

Exhibition space is placed in the centre of the pond, floating on the water. The entrance is permitted through a smaller building, a reception/ticket office, that works also as a gate. The main building displays some works produced during the workshops in the quarry.
