coffee order 101, so you’ll know exactly what you want next time. The large variety of drinks can leave us feeling extremely overwhelmed. However, this article will explain the most common types of beverages that appear in almost every cafe, so you can confidently get the drinks you want. Let’s start without further ado by Stefan Pardi: Cafe au Lait

This Frech name means “coffee and milk”. This is an exquisitely simple order, where it all starts with classic black coffee. Your preferred type of milk is then heated to warm and poured into the cup. If you are looking for “just coffee with milk”, go for a Cafe au Lait and don’t forget to mention your milk of choice. Say, “Can I get a Cafe au Lait with oat milk, please?” Mocha

Mocha reminds me, tragically, of the time when I would order an “iced mocha with soy milk” and repeatedly question why the barista keeps messing up my order with iced chocolate. This phase happened for a whole month, it is unbelievable how I kept sticking to an order that I don’t like. Mocha is made with 2 to 3 shots of expresso and 1 to 4 pumps of chocolate syrup, explaining its rich chocolaty taste. A hot mocha order is served with steamed milk and foam on top, whereas the iced alternative includes milk and whipped cream. Latte

A latte cup ratio is ⅓ coffee and ⅔ milk, an additional 1 cm on top is reserved for foam. You can always ask for additional flavoured syrup in your latte and, of course, your milk of choice. If you are looking for a light, refreshing and sweet pickmeup in the afternoon, order a “latte with soy milk and hazelnut syrup”. The common types of syrup are hazelnut, caramel, white mocha and vanilla. It would take a couple of tries to finally decide on your favourite syrup. While hazelnut embraces quite a nutty and warm taste, vanilla sweetens your drink a lot more intensely.

Iced Americano

An iced Americano consists of 1 rich shot of espresso and cold filtered water for a diluted effect. The ratio for this drink is similar to a latte, except that it’s water instead of milk. This drink goes perfectly well for a groggy, tired morning. The cold feeling of ice and strong taste of black coffee immediately saves your brain from drifting apart, preparing you mentally and physically for a productive day. Machiato

Machiato is simply combining a shot of espresso with a small splash of milk. Being made with a small amount of milk, macchiato has a much stronger flavour than other drinks. With other variations being available, such as the latte macchiato, people could also enjoy a cup of hot milk with a splash of coffee. A cup of macchiato is much smaller than other drinks, with a standard serving at just 37ml. Stay Caffeinated & UpToDate with us at Stefan Pardi, owner of Di Stefano coffee shop.
