INTRO
O-
How it all started Everything starts from a simple idea. The message and aesthetics of this brand are built around the people who lack one particular human sense, eyesight. To us designers, eyesight is the most key sense that we treasure most. This made us think that although blind people cannot see, they still feel everything around them both in terms of material objects and emotions. “It’s not just what you see, but what you feel.” Through this message and thought process, we decided to build the brand around one of the means blind people can understand written vocabulary: “Braille”. In addition, we wanted to show the importance of the “eye” by the combination of both of the senses together, sight and touch. Our mission for the 2015 annual exhibition is “to provide a high quality, unique and inspirational experience within an enjoyable environment for both art enthusiasts and the members of public by providing a visual package as part of the experience that is not only aesthetically, but 10

even emotionally pleasing. By focusing on design rules and boundaries, the user will consider to engage with the exhibition. This exhibition will also promote the works of the students in all the courses not only through the holistic exhibition but also online.” Together as one united team, we gathered, observed and reviewed several different solutions in order to package and provide an outstanding experience both for the exhibitor and the viewer. Working hand in hand with HSBC’s “water programme”, not only did we focus on the five human senses, but also solutions that spread awareness on water management through intelligent and eye-catching design.

“chosen to compliment the visuals” Shaping the brand One can understand better how to set up one whole space that functions well together and focus on what it wants people to see. By taking this approach, together we sought to work on developing our main concept, design a timeless meaningful logo, selecting the right pantone colours, choose an appropriate typeface and design an effective functional way finding system. Having thought of all these processes to implement the above solutions throughout the school structure in a way that helps the viewer understand what they are seeing and where they are going. For way-finding purposes: additional, defining colours were assigned to the individual sections of the exhibition, making it easier to navigate through the institute. The main logo and the logo mark both come in two colours: white and a distinct blue, whilst a clean and fun sans-serif font was chosen to compliment the visuals. These are placed 14
on a dark grey background: another brand colour preferably used throughout all the visual content. In the spirit of digital and print design, all text is identical in structure and alignment to keep everything clean, minimal, and consistent. In regards to social media, when uploading and sharing files related to ‘Tikka’ on social media, the hashtag seen here was requested to accompany the content in the post.

The Invite This year’s invite has taken a new shape: this year it includes the school’s map to facilatate navigation. This way the ones that would be attending the exhibition would know beforehand where each class would be exhibiting. The map has been folded in a Turkish fold, so that it closes inside a squared folder that also holds the actual invite with all the information regarding to date and time of the opening night.

Facebook cover photo To redesign the Institute’s Facebook cover it was decided to take a photo of the school’s tower and edit the Tikka logo inside the tower’s clock.

“a countdown to the opening night�
Colour coded banners To create a countdown to the opening night it was decided to design colour coded banners: these like the invite, show in which section the classes would be exhibiting during the exhibition. Each banner was uploaded everyday before the opening night. 32

“they drew up limitations and solutions�
Deciphering the way The way finding and tactile designs met with the Maltese Association for the visually impaired people and secured in detail their experiences. The team discussed certain newly crucial points, they drew up limitations and solutions. As it happens, way finding was very challenging this year, as they had to find a way to accommodate the visually impaired as well. They brainstormed for various inspirations and signage to make it easier for the blind. The indoor signage was made up of the names of courses according to the room they are in. The outdoor signage was done in an innovative way to correspond with the brand identity. The use of lights and colours were to be done in a certain way to regulate the movement of the way finding systems. 38

“navigate better around the premises”
MAPCAST Year after year, there has been lack of navigation during the final scholastic year’s exhibition at the Institute, leading to a confusion and traffic that could be easily reduced. To help solve this problem, an app was created by a group of B.A. (Hons) in Graphic Design and Interactive Media students for one of the units, to help visitors navigate better around the premises. In order to make this happen, an interactive map was developed to direct to user to their whereabouts. 46

Sensory Room The sensory room was done for the visitors to enjoy, however, it was specifically done for the visually impaired. This room consisted of various installation that every viewer would enjoy but they were especially made for the visually impaired to enjoy art as well. 50

“water projection was used”
Projection This year’s projection unlike the years before has taken a different route - the projection was not projected on the school’s tower instead a stage was built by the HND in 3D Design and Interiors Year 2 students and then the projection team projected on this stage. This year’s projection also took another different and new route as for the first time at the Institute and probably in Malta, water projection was used - this to implent with the HSBC water programme. All the water that was being used was collected after the show and none was wasted in this performance. To go along with the projection, there was also a performance dance that was taken care of by one of the B.A. (Hons) in Graphic Design and Interactive Media students. 56

“festival and jamming session�
Tikka Buzz This year apart from the opening night, two students from the B.A. (Hons) in Graphic Design and Interactive Media, organised a festival and jamming session to promote even further our exhibition. During this festival there will be participating local bands - known Maltese bands like Airport Impressions and even smaller bands from our school. While this festival was on, the exhibition was open yet again to the public that was attending the festival. 66

“mouth watering burgers”
Tikka Grill ‘em all The fund raising ‘Tikka Grill ‘em all’ event turned out to be a great success. We all worked hand in hand. Some mouth watering burgers, drinks and Fontanella’s well known chocolate cake, which was served to satisfy everybody‘s tastes buds. We were situated at the main entrance of the institute for four hours straight. Photographs and footage were continuously being taken, whilst simultaneously, flyers were being distributed to promote the event. A poster was created beforehand to create promotion for the fundraising. 78

“design was dependent on the grid� Class plan The class exhibition was designed in room studio one. The design was dependent on the grid. The floor plan was made to scale obstacles and traffic flow was taken into consideration. It consisted of various features such as the feature wall, center stands, installations stands, computer stands or tables and the wall installation. The room consisted of ceiling tiles which change into wood to form a border to attract the attention of the audiences towards the centre of the room. The featured wall is divided into three main sections. The section for the visitors to leave comments on a roll of paper, the rating station and the students’ names. The computer stands/tables are an alternative solution to prove a display stand whether to computers or any other materials. They are cheap to produce and give a raw texture to the room that compliments the other stands. 90
The center stands were placed in the form of a grid of 1m by 1m. It holds the capacity of four students three printed based and one 3D installation. They removed the idea of the box stands that would be fit into the wall die to the fact that they may fall off the walls due to their weight. A stand that incorporated the window frames was designed out of wood. The design of the room relied heavily on bricks as one of the main static features. The collection of money from sponsors and class colleagues was an ongoing process.
