Emotion. The catalyst that turns information into experience, imparts duration on the fleeting moment, transforms existence into living. There's no escaping it – thank goodness. If we are to become mortals and gods. If we are to understand that it is there, in our feelings, that we come together and become more human. We create performances and concerts, engage in discussions, tell stories both inside our home on Syngrou Avenue and beyond it. We connect the new reality of our digital world with the arts. We invite you to accompany us along the way, and we bombard you with opportunities to join us. We want to take part in the conversation about the big things and the little things that concern us. We don't own the truth, but we are searching for it. We aspire to the surprising, the unexpected, we seek out the intellectually intense, the emotionally challenging. We demand to be moved, our far-reaching ambition is this: to make our lives more beautiful, or at least more interesting. To change, to ponder and develop, to think and to think differently. As individuals, not as target groups. As simple as that, but yet so hard. We won't change the world. But it's worth setting out to do just that. We want to act and react, to bring together people and ideas. Above all else, we want to feel. Off we go then. To the OCC, where emotions are strong.

The OCC is transformed into a National Assembly. The French revolution is happening here and now, all around us, and Joël Pommerat and his wonderful company suck us into the vortex of history, showing us just how contemporary everything the pioneers and opponents of European democracy said and did 228 years ago really is. France's most talked-about production (Molière Award, 2016), with fourteen actors and an army of extras portraying dozens of characters: kings, presidents, parliamentarians, cardinals, hot-blooded revolutionaries and indignant citizens. Receiving rave reviews wherever it is performed, Ç a i r a is event theatre and an experience that is in turns violent and tender, funny and topical, ingeniously entertaining and profoundly enlightening on many levels. An epic project for democracy.

F l i x i t a t t h e O C C returns for eight special events between October 2017 and May 2018. A series of screenings with surprises up its sleeve which will introduce audiences to new artists, travel the world, and put the cinema we want to see on the big screen. This year's series will open by ushering in autumn and casting out melancholy. So make a note in your diary under October 13: "The Autumn of Yasujirō Ozu", a small tribute to one of the greatest auteurs of the Golden Age of Japanese cinema and a great filmic philosopher. We'll be screening two of his masterpieces —A n A u t u m n A f t e r n o o n and L a t e A u t u m n —in digital copies restored by Japan's Shochiku Studios in association with the British Film Institute. TALKS & THOUGHTS 17.10.2017 MAIN STAGE 19:00
One of the most read crime writers, Jo Nesbο will be in Athens to celebrate the twenty-year anniversary of the publication of his first novel. Born in 1960, the journey of this important writer shows his restless spirit. Before becoming a writer, this non-conformist and adventurous Norwegian had a brief career in football and an even shorter one as a stockbroker. He was also a successful pop star in Norway. One day he decided to turn to writing and write a story about what he considers as the only elements worth writing for: crime and love. During a flight from Oslo to Sydney, Nesbο wrote his first novel T h e B a t , for which he won the 1997 Riverton Prize for Best Norwegian Crime Novel of the Year. Thus the legendary detective Harry Hole was born. One of the most popular literary characters of our times, he celebrates twenty years since the publication of the first book of the series. During these two decades, Nesbο’s dark and exciting novels as well as his scripts for films and television have turned him into one of the leading representatives of crime fiction. In 2017, the film adaptation of his novel T h e S n o w m a n will receive its international premiere, starring Michael Fassbender.

The unexpected-verging-on-the-unreal fusion of Ornette Coleman's musical philosophy/method and the 70s disco scene in a sonic environment full of punk, funk, soul, noise and post-punk vibrations and echoes. Marc Ribot grew up in New Jersey and started playing the guitar in a garage rock band. He has been a resident of New York since 1978. He hasn't stopped playing and recording since, performing with Chuck Berry, Rufus Thomas, Wilson Pickett. Then came his collaboration with John Lurie and the Lounge Lizards, which also gave him the opportunity to contribute to the soundtrack of Jim Jarmusch's cult films, M y s t e r y T r a i n and D o w n b y L a w . The 80s found him working with Tom Waits, helping him refine the New Americana aesthetic of R a i n D o g s and another six of the legendary songwriter's albums. These were followed by a host of recordings with John Zorn. Ribot defined his signature sound in the company of the bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma, the drummer G.C. Weston and the superb Mary Halvorson, who made her name with Anthony Braxton. The band is joined by a string trio featuring a violin, a viola and a cello. The OCC heads out to... sports stadiums! Specifically, to the basketball courts and covered sports halls of schools and municipalities in Athens and the Greek provinces. The performance by the choreographer Menti Mega initiates schoolchildren into art's big questions in an original and ground-breaking way: by bringing them face to face with the exciting world of sport. D r i p l e s & T r i p l e t s appropriates the format of popular survival reality shows and talent contests to subvert both to devastating and hilarious effect. Forget about winners and losers, about sports fanatics and the commercialization of physical skill, the stereotypes of beauty and bodily health. They do things differently in the arts. Art's not about points; it's about other things. Or, as the graffiti artist wrote: "poetry's an extreme sport". «887»
Robert Lepage returns to the OCC six years since T h e F a r S i d e o f t h e M o o n ; this semi-autobiographical, science-fiction elegy was the work with which OCC introduced the great Canadian theatre creator to the Greek public. He returns with 8 8 7 , a one-man show and his most autobiographical work to date. Lyrical and pensive, and at times playful or melancholic, 8 8 7 is an existential scenic journey that seems to draw on the famous line by French philosopher Roland Barthes: ‘The only country we truly know is our childhood’. The set is a polymorphous, revolving dollhouse. A model of the apartment block on 887 Murray Avenue in Quebec City where Lepage grew up, it is filled with miniatures of domestic appliances, as well as figures of family members and other residents. It is as if a magic chest is opened, through which this great storyteller, thinker and unique performer-narrator goes deep into the mysteries of existence. SERGE AIMÉ COULIBALY It is a whirlwind of movement, poetry, political thinking, and worship for life and freedom; a solid African piece without the usual clichés. The explosive production of Serge Aimé Coulibaly from Burkina Faso draws inspiration from the music and ideas of Fela Kuti, the charismatic musician, political activist, and uncompromising artist from Nigeria who used his art as a political weapon. The political character of K a l a k u t a R e p u b l i k is not superficial; it is the very crux of the work. The title refers to the name of Fela Kuti’s first residence at Lagos. In turn, this echoes the name of his first prison cell, where he was detained as a political prisoner. The sets allude to Fela Kuti’s legendary club T h e S h r i n e , where he sang of hope and uprising. Based on Kuti’s music, the brilliant soundtrack creates a distinct universe that supports Coulibaly’s narration. With this music as a backdrop, the seven dancers make history with their bodies, just as their electrified dance raises questions with regard to the artist’s position in contemporary world, particularly in Africa. The "Transformations" cycle is an opportunity to try out different ideas and ways of listening to new pieces and works from the contemporary repertoire free of all restraints and restrictions. The subject of this experiment is Franz Schubert's emblematic song cycle, W i n t e r r e i s e , musical settings for poems by Wilhelm Müller. The lieder cycle was translated into Greek by Dionysis Kapsalis and subsequently, the translated poems were set to music in three separate song cycles by Nikos Xydakis, Dimitris Papadimitriou and Tasos Rossopoulos, respectively, and performed under the title A Winter Journey: Three routes. This series of "Transformations" will be brought to a close with an experiment in the opposite direction. In A D i f f e r e n t W i n t e r J o u r n e y , the Greek composers' songs, "transformed" for piano and voice along with several of Schubert's own lieder, will be performed by Myrsini Margariti (soprano) and Dionysios Sourbis (baritone), accompanied by Dimitris Giakas on piano. The seventh annual industrial design encounter sets out to give Greek industrial and product designers a voice. For, despite a domestic environment that is anything but conducive to productivity, these vibrant and creative men and women have managed to make their presence felt (often abroad, too), contributing to "Greek design" in the process. The event aims to bring together design insiders so they can evaluate each other’s work, exchange experiences/views/quests, and communicate with a broader public. ‘What does it take for people not to be boring’, asks Maxim Gorky in S u m m e r f o l k written in 1904. A work with numerous characters that has rarely been performed in Greece, S u m m e r f o l k will be presented at our Youth Stage. Maria Maganari’s production transports the work from pre-revolutionary Russia to contemporary Greek summertime. Often we see holidays as a way to ‘escape’. But can we ever escape ourselves? Gorky’s holiday makers waste their time in chatting, being grumpy, arguing, getting drunk, and having unrequited loves in an atmosphere of idleness. Not all of them, thankfully. Some of them, the younger ones, bring to mind Gorky’s conviction that ‘Man is the only wonder on Earth’.

DEMONS BY FYODOR DOSTOYEVSKY
KONST BOGOM
The innovative Russian director, whose 2016 production of T h e K a r a m a z o v s was critically acclaimed, returns to OCC yet again with Dostoyevsky. The vast fictional material of the Demons (1870–72) is adapted for the theatre by Konstantin Bogomolov (b. 1975), marking the first time OCC has invited a foreign director to work with Greek actors. Bogomolov will transport us to the dark universe of Stavrogin, Verkhovensky, and the rest of Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s antiheroes. A polyphonic work of a borderline character, a political libel, and at the same time a philosophical novel of a confessional and sarcastic nature, the D e m o n s focus on the activities of a cycle of young nihilists. MUSIC 24—25.11.2017 UPPER STAGE 21:00 At the borderline of music and theatre, Georges Aperghis ‘composes’ a whirl that speaks about loneliness: an actress-singer, a video, and quick and unexpected alternations between song, speech, and text. A woman is sitting at the table surrounded by two screens. Two small cameras depict her figure. The text is like a puzzle, composed by the various and different aspects of a person, the numerous thoughts, and self-dispersal. T o u r b i l l o n s refers to a complex and multifaceted character, revealing a kind of mental multiplicity. It is a story about loneliness.
LONS The work has an unusual form, consisting of quick interchanges between song, speech, and text. An exceedingly demanding work (in terms of skills), To u r b i l l o n s is a portrait-performance of an actress-singer that transgresses language.

Arab musicians and singers narrate in their own language T h e S o n g o f R o l a n d (La Chanson de Roland) – a French, medieval epic poem of the eleventh century – with a wonderful set as a background. Consisting of hundreds of small pieces, the set looks like an enlarged miniature of the maps of Aleppo, Baghdad, and Istanbul. Drawing on the poem’s topic (that is, the battle between Christians and Saracens), which he recomposes, Wael Shawky comments on and subverts the stereotypical gaze of the West on the East. A large group of traditional musicians from Arab countries, along with four exceptional singers, sing this epic tale in the style of f i d j e r i , the music of the pearl fishers who are slowly disappearing. Costumes, instruments, and the musical language of the production transport us to the Arab countries of the Persian Gulf long before the discovery of oil, where people once lived on the commerce of pearls and sang in this way.

Frances—Marie Uitti The cutting-edge duo of Gareth Davis & Frances-Marie Uitti is coming to the Onassis Cultural Centre, offering to the public a musical experience that knows no borders or limits. Taking as their stating point works of two great Italian composers of the twentieth century, namely Giacinto Scelsi (1905-1988) and Salvatore Sciarrino (b. 1947), the soloists transform the original works through new approaches to interpretation. At the same time, they explore the crux of their thematic structures. At the core of the concert is the eclectic affinity between performers and composers, which becomes clear through the works composed especially for the performers; for instance, A v e M a r i a , P a t e r N o s t e r , and A l l e l u i a in the case of Scelsi and L e t m e d i e b e f o r e I w a k e . . . and A i l i m i t i d e l l a n o t e in the case of Sciarrino. Plunged into the hidden world of the composers, the audience is taken on a journey by the two musicians who offer new interpretations and approaches to the works, in what is a breathtaking journey that turns into a compelling musical experience. What will happen, if you follow five dancers who do not fear plunging with great speed into the void, in pursuit of happiness? Ioanna Portolou’s new work focuses on risk. The choreographer creates an imaginary space, through which each one feels safe enough to offer an unknown and unique version of oneself. TEXT: EFTHIMIS FILIPPOU DIRECTOR: DIMITRIS KARANTZAS
Τhis is the first collaboration between author and award-winning scriptwriter Efthimis Filippou and Dimitris Karantzas, the critically acclaimed director from the younger generation of Greek directors. The starting point of this collaboration was a discussion about Bernard Marie Koltès’ shocking work R o b e r t o Z u c c o (1990). Just like in Koltès’ work, Filippou’s original play, titled Ρ ο μ π / R o b , also talks about a serial killer. However, the production of these two Greek creators at OCC turns spectators into both witnesses of and accomplices in a mysterious ceremony about a dead man who was murdered. He is reborn through the narrations and testimonies of victims and his followers. He comes back to life to be glorified and eventually devoured by a society that always needs to create leaders, saints, or mere scapegoats. Are you ready for a production that is an unorthodox rite of violence, stereotypes, memory, identity, rationality and irrationality? CHRISTOS PAPADOPOULOS
98
If Europe's dance scene considers Christos Papadopoulos a new and rising star, it is because his minimalist, poetic artistic universe is, in the end, a place we can inhabit. Though reductive, this world constructed out of detailed choreographic design and exhausting physical dance, but also out of musicality and a sense of group solidarity, does smell human. I o n is based on a metaphor: if ions are electrically-charged atoms or groups of atoms moving together in one direction, then this image may reflect reality as it is shaped by people moving and interacting in space. Papadopoulos and his company have set out to explore the condition of coordination, the mystic link which makes people in a group communicate even when they out of each other’s sight, even when they are unaware of the connection.

KAT VÁLASTUR For many years, the choreographer Kat Válastur has been exploring the various meanings with which the body-on-stage can be imbued: from the "heroic body" of her Corpus series—which took Homer's O d y s s e y as its starting point— to the "body as potential" as a primary and necessary condition for exploring the collective. The focus of R a s p Yo u r S o u l is the talking body, starting from the "focal point of the primordial": the mouth. If the tongue is mankind's primary organ of expression, then, the choreographer asks herself, could we not perhaps consider the stage as an oral cavity in which the body is conceived as another "tongue"?

Creativity, self-confidence, cooperation and communication for school children through the art of dance. D a n c i n g t o c o n n e c t  isn't just a dance festival for teenagers; it's an institution conceived of and set up by New York's Battery Dance Company which brings young people together to learn what contemporary dance is, how to realize their potential, set their imaginations free and, above all else, how to collaborate and work as a team. With partners in 54 countries around the world, the OCC is taking contemporary dance to teenagers in their schools for the sixth consecutive year. After Patras, Ioannina, Trikala and Komotini, it's now Chania's turn to join the dance, along with five schools in Athens. The classroom, the school gym, the playground and even the corridors are transformed into a space for artistic creativity and rehearsals. The programme is completed with two shows. First, the students of Chania, will perform at their hometown, and then, all participating schools on the Main Stage of the OCC. Co-Organized by:

Having developed an impressive code for communicating with one another, the four resourceful improvisers from Norway and France shape their sound universe in real time and make music unlike any other. At what point does sound become music and music sound? Having built their art on the foundations of this very question, Dans Les Arbes throw themselves into the search for the middle ground between sound and music. Blurring the dividing line between the two, they create spontaneous compositions of a refined beauty.
With their new album, P h o s p h o r e s c e n c e (following on from two CDs with the emblematic ECM), this outstanding Franco-Norwegian ensemble is set to initiate Athenian audiences into its unique sound-world in its Greek debut at the OCC. BACCH BY EURIPIDES
When rock music electrifies Euripides' words, when punk plugs the myth of the B a c c h a e into the mains, then Dionysus the great, the divine, will sing. Making his OCC debut, Aris Biniaris turns the clash between Pentheus the king and Dionysus the god into an angry hymn to the division of the human soul into logic and instinct. A fan of on-stage interaction between music and drama and a dedicated scholar of ancient tragedy, the director dares couple the subversive power of rock to the violent tragedy of the B a c c h a e in a production which sets out to work all our senses up into a frenzy.

Can Mozart's R e q u i e m serve as the stimulus for a surprising encounter between music and dance? If it’s Alain Platel, Fabrizio Casso and the Belgian C de la B collective who are managing the encounter, of course it can! Jazz inflections and operatic arias, traditional musical idioms from Africa and, of course, Cassol's own harmonic experimentations, give the R e q u i e m an entirely new on-stage dimension. Platel stage directs the fourteen musicians— some of whom were also involved in their previous production, C o u p F a t a l —, attempting what might be termed an unorthodox polyphony. ECHO AND NARCISSUS From the myth of Echo and Narcissus, which first outlined the concept of media, to the digital 21st century. Undertaking the roles of composer and librettist and inspired by these two mythological figures, live coding presents a digital opera addressing contemporary themes. Ovid's tale of Narcissus, who is transfixed by his own reflection, and Echo, who is condemned to wander disembodied through eternity, is staged by Medea Electronique using live coding and code poetry: the code is written in real time and generates the opera's sound as well as its libretto. In so doing, it remains open to a performing art which is forever changing and enriching itself with new tendencies and practices. Apart from being consistently focused on the work of up-and-coming choreographers, this year OCC attempts to open to the public various spaces inside and outside of the building, on and off stage. Our aim is to always bring out the particularities of the Greek choreographic scene, as well as the artists’ thoughts and reflections on our times. Just like this young generation of choreographers, the Festival depicts the present on its own terms. As eclectic, contemporary and daring as the new generation of artists, the festival captures the present in its own terms.

Can art help bring secrets still hidden in the earth to the surface? Can we redefine our national identity through a critical approach to the fragments of our past? Is there such a thing as a socially-engaged archaeology? Can we envision the future of a city through the prism of alternative interpretations of its monuments, contemporary and ancient? The 5th Fast Forward Festival focuses on Archaeology as a discipline which engages not with continuation and immobility but with rifts, discontinuities and transformations on the boundary between scientific method and fiction. Bringing together art and science, it sets out to propose a non-linear approach to history through the multiple temporalities of the material. Artists working in Greece and internationally will explore the defining role Archaeology plays in forming national narratives and collective memory along with its dialectical relationship with cultural heritage.

When technology defines our life and our relationships, isn’t it time to start from the beginning? Shouldn’t we walk to the river source? A journey to the source of dance – a journey to what is anonymous... A N O N Y M O looks back to a time when art wasn't something created by particular, named individuals, but a practice which brought people—and kept communities—together. It immerses itself in these societies' dances and modes of expression, which are rooted in human contact, holding, group cohesion and shared joy. It observes our lives through collective body memory, the experience of passing traditional dances on and their complete transformation into a contemporary movement idiom. It is the representation of a dance which, though it has creators, insists on defining itself as "anonymous" as it seeks its roots in rites of initiation and participation. The work is underpinned by research which Tzeni Argyriou conducted during her residency at the OCC in 2016–17; the material has already been presented at international events.

C r i t i c a l M e c h a n i c s : Participatory workshops for adults on various upto-date technologies. These range from virtual and augmented reality, natural computing and sensors, digital games, three-dimensional design and printing, to the use of analog technology that continues to survive like a zombie in an increasingly digital world. C r i t i c a l E n t r e p r e n e u r s h i p : Seminars for young artists enabling them to grasp basic professional skills, and to familiarize themselves with tools that put their work in the digital value chain. The themes range from understanding such issues as copyright and main business models of the art world, to writing applications for funding and participating in festivals, as well as the distribution and funding of their works through digital platforms.

iDANCE PROVIDING ACCESS TO CONTEMPORARY DANCE EDUCATION FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES How can we boost access to culture for people with disabilities? Continuing its involvement in this area, which began three years ago with the Unlimited Access project, the OCC is striving to make the self-evident possible in creative partnership with the Holland Dance Festival (Netherlands), the Skånes Dansteater (Sweden), and the Stopgap Dance Company (UK). Determined to overcome the obstacles which people with disabilities face, the European iDance programme is staging educational dance workshops for mixed groups of people both with and without disabilities.
