The Distant Mountain Original title : Au loin une montagne Authors : Chongrui Nie ISBN 9782368462553 28€ - 264 x 270 pages - 300 x 210 mm
The story of a young artist life during the Cultural Revolution. A poignant testimony of incredible resilience. China, 1966. Chongrui Nie comes from a literary family and is targeted by the cultural revolution. He will not be allowed to go to art school as he had always hoped, but instead, he is sent to an arms factory in Guan Cen Shan in Shanxi province. Struck by the beauty of this mountainous region and by the warmth of the local peasants, Chongrui Nie considers the experience a blessing and not a curse. He draws everything, all the time: landscapes, temple statues, scenes of daily life, machines, tools… And since he got there, he was drawn to the mountain twice, at fourteen-year intervals.
THE AUTHOR Chongrui Nie was 23 when the Cultural Revolution started. He was forced to abandon his creative interests and work in the Chinese National Architecture company No.6 in Beijing as a simple laborer. He stayed there until 1979 when he was moved to the Beijing Slide Manufacturing company which was recruiting artists for a propaganda. For sixteen years, in his spare time, Nie manages to publish lianhuanhua format comics (a small traditional Chinese format) and get some of his illustrations included in magazines. He then becomes an editor and publishes works professionally. He is discovered in France in 2010 when the first volume of his six-book series Juge Bao is published by éditions Fei. Today, Chongrui Nie lives near Paris. Au loin une montagne took three years to create and is his first intimate and very personal work.

A biopic that sheds light on the unknown aspects of the renowned Elisabeth de Bavière’s life: intense, controversial – sometimes scandalous for her time – “Sisi” was more than the tragic and lovable heroin trapped in the pages of History books and immortalized by movies. Well-educated, world traveler, she was fiercely independent and deeply conflicted: how could she be an Empress and remain free as a woman? Through this biopic, Giorgia Marras reflects on the women conditions in the 19th century – it is like a mirror reflecting today’s society.
