GRAPHIC DOCUMENTARY – MUSIC AND SOCIETY – STEINKIS

REDBONE, A STORY OF ROCK AND RESISTANCE From the rise of rock to Native American struggles, the story of Redbone is an important part of United States history

While the Native American Movement was being founded in 1968, four Native American musicians wanted to use their art to defend their culture. Backed by Jimi Hendrix, they started Redbone and rapidly become idols of the younger generation of their people.

REDBONE is a cross between biography and journalism. Based on historic research and interviews with the musicians and people close to them, the story tells the tale, through the use of flashbacks, of how these activist musicians influenced the mindset of their country and how they took up the cause for the Native American minority in the US and Europe and became legendary.

GRAPHIC NOVEL – ART & HISTORY - STEINKIS

REFUZNIK, THE IMPOSSIBLE DEPARTURE Refuznik: The Soviet Jew to whom Soviet authorities denied permission to emigrate. The true story of the sculptor who was forced into exile so she could practice her art in freedom. Bella Goldberg was born in the Soviet Union two years before the death of Stalin. Of Jewish origin, she experiences antisemitism from a very young age. The only thing that gives young Bella hope in the height of destalinization is her sculpture, which is tolerated as long as her work serves communism. Insubordinate, she quickly sides with the artists considered “degenerates” who reject Soviet Realism. But she quickly realizes that there is only one solution, leave the country for Israel. Set in the Soviet Union of the 1950s and 1960s, Refuznik covers the reality gap between communist values and the daily life of the Soviets under the yoke of an unjust totalitarian system.

Original title : Refuznik, l’impossible départ Authors : Flore Talamon, Renaud Pennelle Size : 18 x 25 cm Pages : 126 Price : 18 € Pub. Date : 06/March/2019 EAN : 9782368461716 THE AUTHORS A Sciences Po graduate and ex business and consulting executive, Flore Talamon now spends her time writing children’s books. Her first graphic novel, Salam, Toubib (Delcourt), was published in 2016, under the pseudonym Claire Dallanges. She was inspired to write Refuznik after meeting the artist who now lives in Paris. A graduate of ESAG, and after having completed several advertising and design assignments, Renaud Pennelle illustrated his first graphic novel, Sagarmatha. His work impressed the film director Abdellatif Kechiche who asked him to do the art for a graphic novel adaptation of his film Vénus Noire. This was followed by Des Fourmis dans les jambes. The style that he used for Refuznik, which is sometimes very close to expressionism, brings the artist’s emotional intensity across perfectly

GRAND REPORTAGE – WITNESS OF THE WORLD – STEINKIS/LES ESCALES

In 2019, Steinkis launches a new collection of graphic grand reportage with Les Escales (Editis)

FALLOUJAH, MY LOST HOME TOWN Feurat is a journalist. In 2003, he went to Falloujah in Iraq for a story. But Falloujah is not just any town in Iraq, it is his parents’ home town. The place where he spent his vacations as a child. The town with a river whose name he carries… The present and the past, the professional and personal, the adult and the child all come to light at the same time… The memories come back, and another Iraq emerges, one that is humane, colorful, complex, lively. And a town that is, in spite of everything, rich from its history, culture, traditions and inhabitants. What do we know about Falloujah other than its destruction in 2004 and it having been taken over by the Islamic state? Nothing. It is this nothing that Feurat replaces through his double approach, sensitive and factual on one hand and gentle and precise on the other.

ONE SHOT COMICS – SOCIETY – JUNGLE IMPRINT

RADICAL WARS, A DIVE INTO ARMED RADICALISATION In a world much like ours in many ways, society projects its anxieties on a small yet not insignificant segment of the population: Star Wars fans. Their ways are seen as growing increasingly distant from modern society values. Everyone is keeping a close eye on them and they are regularly stigmatized in the media. This rising sentiment is primarily due to a small extremist faction of this community, the Jedistes, who choose to follow the doctrines of their idols to the letter, even going so far as to use their light sabers on the civilian population and set off to planet Tatouine to fight battles. A TV talk show host decides to invite three Jedistes to be on his show, a couple of whom have just come back from combat, to hear their point of view and to better understand what motivates them to take up arms in faraway lands… The book will come with an educational packet, and a foreword written by Seraphin Alana, an academic teacher and Unesco expert.
