CONFERENCE THEME There is an incredibly large number of fortifications, castles, manors, fortresses and other buildings, situated in Croatia, that bear witnesses to ancient historical days, conquests, battles, romances and legends. There are for example, medieval remains of forts – from parts of the city (Karlovac, Osijek), fortresses and standalone forts (Klis, St. George in Hvar, St. Michael, St. Nicholas and St. John in Šibenik, Brod fortress, Punta Christo in Pula, Medvedgrad in Zagreb and many more), castles (Trsat castle in Rijeka. Bosiljevo, Stara
Sušica…) and many more fortifications that will be showcased at the conference. Some of these buildings are currently in the process of revitalization, transforming during the summer into stages for concerts, theater shows and performances; some are functional, but some degrade every year and surrender to the ravages of time. Infrastructure renewal is demanding and expensive. Most of the fortifications and similar buildings haven’t been archeologically explored nor have

any conservation background. Property relations have not been fully resolved. These are all obstacles to the physical reconstruction of these sites. What viable options remain? Digital interpretation, stories, events… innovative solutions that bring life to the sites, show historical events in a new and fresh way, enable and encourage development of new tourist products and enrich experiences for visitors of all ages and groups.

To present and give importance to these unique historic and cultural buildings, and through demonstration of good practice to display a variety of features that can easily and in a technologically innovative way revive the history and create attention of visitors.
