In 2015 Brighton Secondary School continued to strive to, ‘Do all things well.’
Principal Comments
The facilities upgrade following last year’s major redevelopment included the Spence Study Centre; the new digital sign; new signage around the school; the upgrade of the school’s Reception area; the perimetre fencing and the tennis court fencing. The Year 11 and 12 students love their new dedicated area for study and relaxation in the Spence Study Centre, opened later than expected in July. The Centre adjoins the new Learning Laneway developed throughout 2015 with ‘active learning by doing’ in mind. The teachers and students designed and created a dynamic area with innovative seating, mini golf and display areas for pop-up classes. ‘Fun Fridays’ became a regular event for the students to enjoy at lunch time with students performing music, dance and sport activities to the delight of their peers. The Learning Laneways launch had pop-up stalls and entertainment. Highlights included the staff band, called Governing Council, and the illuminated light show projected on the wall of the new Bright Centre. This was inspired by the Assistant Principal, Jill Brindley, to depict the history of light in the 2015 International Year of Light. The technical side of the show was created by teacher, Nic Tubb. Brighton Secondary School is renowned for its events. The Moon Lantern Festival held on the Brighton Esplanade with our Holdfast Partnership schools and kindergartens brought the community together to fundraise for our Cambodian kindergarten built last year with the assistance of the Brighton World Challenge students. A highlight of the evening was the song entitled, ‘Unity’, composed by Andrew Barrett with lyrics written by student Rebekah Rath. We anticipate ‘Unity’ will become our Partnership’s theme song to be performed at Partnership events in the future. The official combined Music Centres’ event to farewell Head of Music, Jeffrey Kong, brought together famous old scholars to perform with Jeffrey and the 2015 music students. The Annual Music Spectacular raised the benchmark for excellence yet again with the addition of lighting and special effects afforded by the new Concert Hall. More awards were achieved in the Music program. The Brighton Symphony Orchestra performed at

the Sydney Opera House and achieved a gold standard in the Australian Music Festival against ensembles from the USA, China, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Indonesia and other Australian States. At the Adelaide Eisteddfods the Treble Choir won the Junior Large Choir section. Although not staged at Brighton, another significant event was the F1 in Schools World Championships. Our team, ‘Precision Racing’, comprised of Year 10 students, represented Australia in Singapore competing against adult teams from 34 countries. The Volleyball program continues to out perform its competitors by winning the prestigious State Championships. The Science Department won more Oliphant Awards in 2015 than ever before including the prestigious top school award, presented at the State awards ceremony held in the Brighton Concert Hall. Students participated in the Culinary Challenge World Championships in Tahiti after having won the Australian title. The main priority for teachers’ professional learning in 2015 was experiencing how to ‘flip’ the classroom. Teachers record content for students to view independently at home and thus provide more time in class for the higher-order thinking tasks of analysis and evaluation with the teacher present to assist them. continued on page 2

Brighton’s new Teacher Recording Studio has enabled staff to further develop useful video of their lessons for students to access anywhere and anytime. The digital learning leader, Jeremy LeCornu, is in high demand to share our expertise with South Australian schools and schools interstate. Teachers and students are fortunate to have a robust computer infrastructure and a personal mobile device in the MacBook Pro. Apple recognised Brighton as an Apple Distinguished School in 2015 and two teachers, Jeremy LeCornu and Samantha Moyle, as Apple Distinguished Educators were presented to their peers in Singapore. Samantha Moyle also won the state nomination for the BHP Billiton Science Teacher of the Year Award in 2015. Toby Ward was awarded the South Australian Science Teacher Upper Secondary Award and Jeremy LeCornu and Maj-Lis Borgen-Smith were awarded a DECD $20,000 Masters scholarship. Our range of programs includes a partnership with Port Lincoln High School to further the study of the Visual Arts with aboriginal students. A DECD $50,000 grant supports the students to travel to each other’s schools for intercultural understanding and opportunities to experience country and city life.
I attended the World Confederation of Principals in Helsinki in August where I finalised our relationships with the Stockholm Science and Innovation School, the Helsinki Taivallahden Peruskoulu and in Oslo the Lillestrom Videregaende to share teacher experiences in four-week exchanges beginning in February 2016. Other international connections include the inaugural student trip to Japan and the biennial Music tour to Europe. Brighton teachers take great pride in their work and their students’ achievements. Our school’s success is the result of strong teams. History was made in 2015 when the students’ reports went live on the web through the Learner Management System, Daymap. We are moving ever closer to real-time reporting. This year I was a finalist in the South Australian Excellence awards for School Leadership. Such recognition is more a reflection of strong teams at Brighton Secondary School, especially the Principal Team (Barbara Richards, Jill Brindley, Kane Hillman, Jeffrey Kong, Tristan Kouwenhoven, David Thomson and Sandra Hall) who strive to provide the kind of school and education that students will want for their own children in the future.

OPEN BOYS KNOCKOUT FOOTBALL TEAM Congratulations to the Open Boys Knockout Football Team who defeated Henley High School in the Grand Final. They are the first Brighton Secondary School side in over a decade to beat Henley High School in the Open Knockout Football Final, a phenomenal achievement. Bailey Williams was awarded the Peter Roberts Medal for the best player on the ground.

40TH REUNION OF THE 1975 BRIGHTON HIGH PREMIERSHIP On the 21st August 2015, the players of the 1975 Brighton High School ‘A’ grade Football Premiership team attended their 40th Year reunion at the Glenelg Football Club. 35 people attended with many making the effort to come from interstate. This team defeated Henley High School by 1 point.

Volleyball 2015 Champions

VOLLEYBALL NEWS The Australian Volleyball Schools Cup Championships was held in Melbourne from the 5th – 12th December 2015. Brighton Secondary entered 23 teams in the weeklong tournament involving 214 students and 54 support staff. At the end of the Presentation ceremony Brighton was named the overall 2015 Australian Champion Volleyball School. This award is determined by each schools highest 6 team results (male and/ or female). Brighton also won the 2015 Girls Champion School of Australia and was runner up Boys Champion School. The following 13 of the 23 teams returned home with a medal – totalling 5 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze. Brighton Secondary won a medal in 9 out of the possible 12 Junior Divisions (Years 8-10) in this event. Congratulations must be extended to the students who competed on their excellent conduct both on and off the court during the week and the resultant success that they achieved. Heartfelt gratitude and congratulations is extended to the support staff that travelled with us – Teaching staff, Parents and Old Scholars who coached and managed the 23 teams. Without your willingness to volunteer your time and your dedication to our students these results would not be possible.

SECONDARY SCHOOLS CULINARY COMPETITION In June, Jackson Jones, Daniel Fidler, Soumiah Al Jassar and Krystal Papandrea competed in a cooking competition held at Regency TAFE organised by the Australian Culinary Federation. The challenge was to use a whole chicken for four people. The boys’ Team were the overall winner on the day. The prize: to represent South Australia in the annual International Secondary Schools Culinary Competition in Tahiti in October. The competition saw the Teams present four main dishes with the main ingredient of the competition, Tahitian Batfish. The Brighton Secondary School team was awarded a bronze medal, which is a was a fantastic achievement against tough competition. Jackson and Daniel also spent time exploring the island and building relationships with their fellow world competitors. They visited Batfish and pineapple farms, went swimming in crystal blue water on Moorea Island and took part in cooking master classes by prestigious French and Tahitian chefs. Jackson was also awarded an apprenticeship at the Rydges Hotel next year thanks to the professionalism and skill he demonstrated at their fundraiser dinner earlier in the year.

BRIGHTON SECONDARY SCHOOL NAMED APPLE DISTINGUISHED SCHOOL Brighton Secondary School is pleased to announce that it has been recognised as an Apple Distinguished School for 2015-2016 for its innovative and effective implementation of Apple technology to enhance teaching and learning. The Apple Distinguished School designation is reserved for programs that meet criteria for innovation, leadership and educational excellence and demonstrate Apple’s vision of exemplary learning environments. Principal Olivia O’Neill stated, ‘we are very proud of this recognition as it is evidence of the great work of our students and teachers. Apple is pleased to welcome Sam Moyle and Jeremy LeCornu to the ADE Class of 2015. Both Sam and Jeremy attended the Apple Distinguished Educator Institute in Singapore in August. This was a fantastic professional learning opportunity and they will now be able to share their experiences and new knowledge with the rest of our staff. DIGITAL LEARNING 2015 was another stimulating year for Digital Learning at Brighton Secondary School. Every student has their own device – iPad at Year 8 and 9 and MacBook at Year 10, 11 and 12. Staff and students found the ability for interactivity and creativity on iPads very beneficial. Students were able to collaborate, question, research, design, create and analyse with ease. Using the iPads was exciting, with teachers constantly discovering new and innovative ways to enhance teaching and learning. The MacBook is now used for three years through Years 10, 11 and 12. This ensures optimum functionality and minimises the chance of obsolescence which is inevitable with technology. The MacBook has the capacity and capabilities to support the rigour and demand of senior schooling. The teaching staff worked on developing their ability to use technology to enhance their teaching. A major focus of the teacher professional development program was to utilise technology to flip the classroom. Flipping the classroom is all about making the most of face-to-face lesson time with students. Teachers worked on producing short video clips of their curriculum content that students could watch outside of lesson time. This meant that more lesson time was allocated to student-centred learning activities and teachers were able to work with smaller groups of students or individual students to help them apply and extend their knowledge. The staff and students look forward to further progress of the Digital Learning program in 2016.

LEARNING LANEWAYS 2015 saw the launch of the Learning Laneways initiative at Brighton Secondary School. A Learning Laneway was developed where students with a range of interests came together to participate in authentic learning experiences through project and challenge-based learning. The Laneway provided a space where students demonstrated their problem solving skills, resourcefulness, imagination and creativity in activities such as DJ-ing for Beginners and Dynamite Science Challenges.

JAPANESE TRIP Year 9, 10 and 11 Japanese students travelled to Japan for 3 weeks. They visited Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Miyajima Island, Himeji and Osaka. They also had the experience of a life time visiting two schools and staying in two Homestays at Hakuo Middle School and Toyodai Himeji School which is our sister school.

STEM 2015 STEM at Brighton Secondary School can take you places and introduce you to people! Pictured are just some of the opportunities we enjoyed this year, as a result of our STEM program. The Subs in Schools team members, on the left Brad Ratsch, and Peter Baker-Hutton meeting the Premier, Hon Jay Weatherill in the Technology Pavilion at the Adelaide Show in September. Then in November, the team addressed 50 members of the Submarine Institute of Australia, where they met and discussed the design and manufacture of their boat with the Hon Christopher Pyne, Federal Member of Parliament. The National Champion F1i’S’s team, are also pictured with the Premier, a day before leaving for Singapore to compete in the World F1i’S’s competition. We are already involved in the biggest STEM activity in the world, the F1 in Schools challenge, which currently engages some 20,000,000 students from over 25 countries. Briefly, the students face the design, testing and manufacture of prototype F1 vehicles, using many sophisticated testing and analysis tools such as Autodesk Flow Design, Virtual Wind Tunnel, CATIA for Finite Element Analysis and a range of Computer Aided Manufacturing programs to simulate and ultimately manufacture car bodies. In addition, 3D printing has been a part of Brighton Secondary School for nearly four years now, and as a prototyping tool, it has changed the way we all design. Many parts of the championship cars are tested and printed using this technology. Students in this competition also study the physics associated with aerodynamics, rotational inertia, and the maths needed for drag coefficient, frontal area and force in newton calculations, to name a few. Verbal presentations, enterprise and engineering folios and pit displays/marketing are all part of this STEM completion.

THE WORLD F1I’S’S FINALS – SINGAPORE, SEPTEMBER 2015 As National Champions, Precision Racing won the right to represent Australia at the World F1i’S’s event, held at the Convention Centre, Singapore, during September. There were 47 teams from over 30 countries represented at the event, with many of the competing students in their 12th year of schooling. Precision Racing were Year 10 students, but still managed a very creditable 10th place.

SPECIAL INTEREST MUSIC HAS AN EXCEPTIONAL YEAR Brighton Secondary School Special Interest Music had an exceptional year of music making and wider community work. Brighton Secondary School’s reputation for developing and nurturing outstanding vocal and instrumental performers continued to grow throughout the year. High calibre musical performances included: • Martin Oakley, Head Prefect sang Advance Australia Fair at the Tour Down Under celebration at the Bay • Big Band 1, under Mark Cameron-Smith, gave an outstanding performance at the Brighton Jetty Classic 10th Year Anniversary • the Year 12 Knight Over Day group performed at the Adelaide Showground for Carnevale • the Concert Band, under Andrew Barrett, opened the 28th SACE Board Merit Ceremony held at Government House • the Year 11/12 Choir and Tour Choir performed at the Adelaide Fringe Festival held at Elder Conservatorium, Adelaide University
• B righton Belcanto, under Emma Borgas, performed Australian and New Zealand anthems at the Brighton Jetty for the ANZAC Day Dawn Service • a number of groups and soloists performed for the Jeffrey Kong Farewell Concert staged by Brighton Secondary School, Fremont Elizabeth City High School, Marryatville High School and Woodville High School • all major ensembles were showcased at the Spectacular Concerts held in the Jeffrey Kong Auditorium • the Public School Music Festival Foyer Concert featured talented soloists from Brighton Secondary School • t he Brighton Secondary School 2015 Tour Choir sang at Roma, Firenze, Padova in Italy, Innsbruck and Wien in Austria, Prague in the Czech Republic, Jessen in Germany and Warsaw in Poland.

Jeffrey Kong Retires

JEFFREY KONG, BRIGHTON SECONDARY SCHOOL MUSIC PROGRAM (1976-2015), HEAD OF MUSIC (2006-2015) Jeff’s memory will live on in Brighton through the Jeffrey Kong Auditorium and through his students over the past 40 years who respect him for caring about them and challenging them to succeed beyond their expectations. In 1976 when Jeffrey Kong began his teaching career at Brighton, the Brighton High School Music Centre was a small music department with distinguished music educator Neville Hannaford as Head of Music. In his time at Brighton Jeff Kong engaged regularly in professional development and completed an Honours degree at Elder Conservatorium. In 1980 he went to the US to study Chamber Music and Vocal Accompanying with Gwendolyn Koldofsky at the University of Southern California. In the later part of the same year he returned to Australia and worked as a vocal coach and repetiteur at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music’s Opera School where he was given one week’s notice to learn and perform Puccini’s opera La Boheme in its entirety. He recommenced at Brighton in 1981. In 1992 he won an Italian Government Scholarship to study Chamber Music and Accompanying at Rossini Conservatorium of Music in Pesaro, Italy with Lorenzo Bavai, pianist to the famous Spanish Tenor Jose Carreras, one of the ‘Three Tenors’. His study in Italy was cut short following his father’s untimely death, returning to Hong Kong to be with his mother. In 1995 he was appointed to the position
of Music Coordinator at Brighton Secondary School through to 2005 when he was promoted to Head of Music. The Brighton Secondary School Special Interest Music Centre continues to showcase the gifted and talented music students and assist in training pre-service music teachers. Jeff’s desire to enhance student learning and performance skills as well as his love of Western Music, guided him to plan and lead many International Tours for Brighton ensembles. These tours have enabled students and staff to perform in some of the finest concert halls, conservatoriums, cathedrals and highly esteemed schools throughout Australia, Asia and Europe. His final year at Brighton Secondary School will conclude with a grand tour of Italy, Austria, Poland and Germany. His leadership created a strong faculty of outstanding educators, each an expert in their field. Many of our relationships with the wider community have been forged by Jeff and his desire to raise the profile of the Brighton Music program both in South Australia and on the international stage. He will be succeeded as the Head of Music by Andrew Barrett, an outstanding musician, composer and conductor.

DEAN COLE Brighton Secondary School Design and Technology 2010-2015 Dip T(Sec) B.Ed(Design & Industrial Arts) Dean began teaching in 1977 at Fremont High School, formerly Elizabeth Boys Technical High School. He was one of twelve in the faculty. Schools that he has taught at include: Grant High School, Mount Gambier, 1978-1991 Allendale East Area School, 1992 Northfield High School/Ross Smith Secondary School, 1993-2000 Modbury High School, 2001-2009 Brighton Secondary School, 2010-2015 Subjects taught include: woodwork, metalwork, computer aided design, plastics, photography, junior science and health. Dean has enjoyed teaching design and technology as these subjects involve the HEAD, the HANDS and the HEART. His belief has been that “success is the birth right of every child”. J.S.
