By now all students in Years 8 and 10 will have their iPads and MacBooks respectively. The Year 8 students enjoyed the first day to familiarise themselves and the subsequent team–building excursions to Woodhouse. I’m very pleased that Dr Michael Carr-Gregg presented workshops to the staff and an evening session for parents on Tuesday 14th February. He is an outstanding speaker with very useful advice for parenting adolescents. The Annual General Meeting will be held on Monday 27th February, 6.00pm refreshments, 6.30pm meeting commences in the Brighton Theatre. I encourage you to stand for Governing Council – you gain insights into the workings of the school, but more importantly, the school gains from your ideas. Brighton Secondary School has agreed to participate in an ongoing fundraising opportunity created by the Credit Union SA. It’s called “School Community Rewards” and can bring direct financial benefit to our school.

Credit Union SA has developed a program that allows its members to nominate our school to receive financial benefit (at no cost to the credit union member or the school). All the financial products that our school community (teachers, parents, grandparents and friends) have with the Credit Union SA will generate ongoing annual benefit to the school. These funds will boost the ongoing fundraising efforts of our school community, which can then be used for any purpose the school wishes.

From a product perspective the contribution to the school is based on 10% of the gross margin the credit union earns on each product category. For example, based on an average home loan of $225,000, the school would earn $450 per loan, per year. A personal loan for $15,000 would contribute $135 per year. continued on page 2

CONGRATULATIONS Velvet Klass, Year 12, represented South Australia twice, competing at the Under 17 level in Futsal (indoor soccer) and then the Open Women’s Championships. We would like to congratulate Ruben Flinn, Year 11, for gaining entry into the Port Adelaide Aboriginal AFL Academy. Ruben was chosen out of over 70 young men to be a part of this Academy through a trial process. Ruben will now be training at Port Adelaide Football Club once a week for the entirety of the year and completing a Certificate III in Fitness through this program.
OPEN WEEK Brighton Secondary School Open Week will be held from 10th – 13th April 2017. Guided tours of the school in action will be available at 9.00am and 2.00pm on 10-12th and 9.00am on 13th April. The Principal’s address will follow each of the guided tours and will be held in the Brighton Concert Hall. YEAR 7 TO 8 TRANSITION The 330 Year 8 students have settled in to secondary schooling very well. They have come to Brighton Secondary School from approximately 50 different primary schools. The main focus of the first week was to get to know their teachers and fellow students and to learn to navigate between classes.
During their second week all Year 8 students participated in a Year 8 Orientation team building day at Woodhouse in the Adelaide Hills. They had the opportunity to spend the day with their home group and the other home groups in their House. The day was filled with a variety of challenging yet fun team building activities. YEAR 8 ACQUAINTANCE AND iPAD INFORMATION EVENING Every year, our new Year 8 students and their parents gather for an Acquaintance and iPad Information Evening in our beautiful Brighton Concert Hall. This year, students were more excited than ever to learn about the school, meet some of their teachers and start using their iPads. Teachers then spent the following day helping students set up their devices and learn essential iPad skills to improve their digital literacy. Similarly, the Year 10 MacBook Rollout night was a big success, with students very eager to get their hands on their new Apple MacBook Airs. Students learned how get the most out of their devices throughout their schooling, and how to use them safely. Thanks to all involved for smooth and successful device rollouts for 2017. MUSIC NEWS Regional Tour On 7th of December, the Brighton Secondary School Concert Band left for a regional tour to the Copper Triangle. We performed at many primary schools and learnt a lot about becoming a better musician. This tour was an incredibly rewarding experience, and I highly recommend that all music students make the most of opportunities like these. Before we left to our first destination, we had an all day rehearsal. In the rehearsal, we polished up our repertoire and focused on elements such as dynamic contrast, tone and style. We then split up into our sections and learnt a piece which showcased the sound of that particular instrument family.

During the tour, we got to learn many performance skills which could help us in future performances or auditions. Some of these skills include having stage presence, getting the audience involved and being confident in front of larger groups. One of the most surprising things was the amount of audience participation we received. It was great to see the audience get involved and enjoy our performances.
On 9th of December 2016, Brighton Secondary School took part in Minda’s Christmas celebration, Carols on the Lawn. Emma Borgas and Andrew Barrett took the Treble and Boys Chamber Choirs to perform a short set of well-known carols. Special mention must be made of the choristers who jumped straight off the bus from the Concert Band regional tour to participate in this community event.
One of the highlights of the trip was getting to know the other members of the ensemble who you didn’t know very well. We developed friendships with students from other year levels and learnt more about other members. On one night, we held an ‘AntiTalent Night’ which was a chance to have a laugh and talk to people you wouldn’t normally talk to.
Tour Down Under
Overall, this tour was an amazing experience, and I encourage everyone to participate in a tour like this. It was an opportunity to learn many things (not just in regards to music) which will be very valuable in future years. Jae-Marie Elliss 1003R
I had the honour and privilege to perform the Australian National Anthem at the Stage 3 Opening of the Tour Down Under. It was a wonderful opportunity to be part of such a large community event which is not only known nationally but internationally as well. This was a truly proud moment and one I will never forget. Proclamation Day Service
Brighton Festive Carols In partnership with The Very Reverend Frank Nelson, Dean of St Peter’s Cathedral, we developed a new format for our Christmas carols service held on Wednesday 14th December. Brighton Festive Carols showcased our choirs and Brass Ensemble with contributions from Esmond Choi and Amelia Monaghan on recorder. Students read verses from the gospel according to Matthew and Luke in a service that focused on light, joy and singing. Special thanks to Emma Borgas for her stupendous contribution to this celebration.
SACE Merit Ceremony Once again, Big Band 1 performed in the gardens of Government House as guests arrived for the 2017 SACE Merit Ceremony on 7th February. We were extremely fortunate that this outdoor event took place on the one day of the week that was not raining or extremely hot. Congratulations to Esmond Choi, Lilla Davies-Ardill, Christopher McDonald and Kimberly Wong for achieving merits for Stage 2 Music subjects.
On 28th of December I had the amazing opportunity to sing the National Anthem at the 2016 Proclamation Day service, under The Old Gum Tree. As approximately two hundred people gathered for this early morning service, His Excellency the Honourable Governor Hieu Van Le and his wife arrived. After speeches by the City of Holdfast Bay Mayor, Stephen Patterson, and the Governor himself, I sang the National Anthem. I was accompanied by the City of Holdfast Bay Concert Band which had a few recently graduated Brighton Old Scholars. After the performance I was photographed with the Governor’s wife and the Mayor. It was an honour to represent the school at this historic South Australian event. Lizzie Hartley 1103R

Combined Year 8 class Science Equipment Scavenger and Orienteering hunt
SCIENCE NEWS It’s lab orientation week in Year 8 Science this week, and two of our classes have done things a little differently this year… Ms Shattock’s Year 8 Think Bright Science class and Ms Moyle’s Year 8 Science class participated in a collaborative scavenger hunt that saw students racing each other (and the clock) to collect as many laboratory items as they could. Students were posed with challenging clues that required some serious creativity and critical thinking to solve, and then navigate their Brighton maps to find the laboratory apparatus. Gauze mats were hidden in trees, Bunsen burners in classrooms, thermometers in bookshelves and beakers in gyms … safe to say the whole school got some science equipment education throughout their morning! It was an absolute pleasure to watch students working together to solve the clues and learn about the equipment they’ll be using in lab practicals throughout their schooling. We’re looking to take this to the next level next year with some augmented reality apps … watch this space! Until then, keep an eye out for a stray test tube or two. VISUAL ARTS NEWS Brighton Sculpture Festival 2017 Congratulations to Isobel Lorton (Year 12 Visual Arts 2016) who achieved a Highly Commended Award for her ceramic sculpture, ‘The Traveller’ in the recent Brighton Sculpture Festival. Isobel created a masterful portrait figure in clay with a black glaze. Isobel constructed the work over several months developing her skills and concepts to a high level. Year 10 students from Ms Frank’s class also exhibited work in the exhibition this year. These students produced figurative clay forms with a gold finish. The abstracted forms were the results of a class investigation on the work of British artist Henry Moore. Well done Ms Frank and Year 10 sculpture class!
Year 12 SACE Art Show 2017 Works for this significant exhibition are selected from the best student works in Year 12 Visual Arts and Design. This year five Brighton Secondary School students were selected for the exhibition from their practical studies as Year 12s in 2016. Congratulations to Emma Hanlin, Abbey Miller and Isobel Lorton – Visual Arts, and Mikayla Stewart and Francesca Olds - Visual Design. These students’ outstanding works will be exhibited later this term in the Adelaide TAFE Gallery. We look forward to visiting the exhibition with our current senior art and design classes.

THE DAYMAP PARENT PORTAL The DayMap Parent Portal is proving a great tool for parents to keep up to date with their child’s timetable, published results and end of term reports. If you already have a log in, and have a Year 8 joining Brighton Secondary School this year, you will be able to use your current log in, and using the drop down box in the Portal, access your child’s data. Remember it is easy to get a log in to access this data, anywhere, anytime over the internet. If you have not previously registered, here’s how: 1. Go to the Brighton Secondary School website (www.brightonss.sa.edu.au) 2. Click on the ‘LOGIN DAYMAP’ tab 3. Click ‘PARENT PORTAL’ 4. Choose ‘NEW USER’ 5. Enter the email address that you have most recently supplied to the school 6. Enter your child’s school ID number (you will find it at the top of any student report) 7. Follow the prompts 8. A log in and password will be sent to your email address 9. Go back to the Brighton Seconday School website and log in

If you have more than one child at Brighton Secondary School, you can access each child using the same password and log in! Once in the Portal, use the drop down box on the top left hand side to select your child’s name from the drop down list.

iBOOK EXPO The last week of Term 4 was a busy one for many of our Year 9 students who hosted over 150 primary school students for an iBook expo. As part of their cross-curricular Challenge Based Learning Unit, Ms Shattock’s Year 9 English class and Mrs Brennan’s Year 9 Art class produced iBooks for children, and in the last week of the term, they presented these to their eager audience. The challenge posed to Ms Shattock’s class of ‘authors’ was to write a story that both entertained young children and also informed them of an important issue in society. Some of the chosen issues included same-sex marriage, depression, divorce and being environmentally friendly. They not only had to produce a high quality narrative, but also a writer’s statement that would inform their ‘illustrator’ of what they wanted the book to look like. This was a challenging task, and required students to draft, redraft and polish their work to a professional standard. These narratives and writer’s statements were then passed onto Mrs Brennan’s class of ‘illustrators’. They spent a few weeks completing discovery activities to learn how to use the elements and principles of art in their illustrations, convey emotion and create simple yet dynamic imagery. After workshopping a range of art techniques, they produced illustrations for the stories using techniques such as watercolour, paper cutting and drawing. These were then carefully scanned and made into beautifully polished iBooks.

A key component of any CBL unit is the authentic audience, and this is where the 150 students from Brighton Primary School came in. The Year 3 and 4 students were absolutely enraptured by the stories and loved getting to know the Year 9s. They voted for their favourite books which saw author/illustrator teams competing in a heated grand final reading. The winning iBook was ‘For Better or Worse’ by Chelsea Vigants and Lara Grocke. A big thank you to those who were involved…especially the Year 9s who worked hard to prepare for the day and read their iBooks (a very brave feat with such a large and young audience). Days like these remind students that the work they produce in school is relevant and important. We were overwhelmed by the high standard of some of the final products, and saw each student develop their creativity, collaboration and problem solving skills throughout. YEAR 8 WOODHOUSE EXCURSION In Week 2 all Year 8 students as part of the transition to secondary school program, had the opportunity to take part in an all day team building day at Woodhouse in the Adelaide Hills. Woodhouse offered beautiful surroundings and an opportunity for our students to be challenged and best of all to have fun. Together with the support of the Year 11 Peer Leaders, our Year 8 students had the opportunity to take part in a variety of team based activities led by the experienced staff from Active Education. ABSENCES FROM SCHOOL • If students are absent from school due to illness or other unavoidable circumstances, parents are required to telephone the school’s absence phone line on 8375 8231 on the morning of the absence. This is a recorded message, available 24 hours a day. Alternatively, parents may email the school at absences.student@brighton.sa.edu.au preferably by 10.00am on the day of the absence, and include the child’s full name, the date they will be absent and the reason for their absence. • Parents / students may be required to provide a medical certificate to explain absence which exceeds three consecutive days, or for any absence on the day that a SACE summative assessment task is due.

CAN YOU HELP IN THE CANTEEN?
The school Canteen offers excellent food services to students and staff. The school Canteen is a source of additional revenue for our school. The profits generated are used for providing additional educational amenities for the students. Over the years, the profits made at the Canteen have been a direct result of the amount of generous voluntary help parents have been prepared to provide. Parents involved with the Canteen have not only found it a worthwhile social activity by mixing with other volunteer parents, staff and students, but an excellent way to help them understand the structure and processes involved in their child’s school. We realise that many parents lead busy lives and are therefore offering some different time slots to encourage you to be involved
in the school. Anytime that you are able to contribute will be greatly appreciated. On the day of volunteering you and your child will receive a free lunch. As part of DECD Policy all volunteers must have a police clearance and a RAN certificate (Responding to Abuse and Neglect). If you do not have a current police clearance please see Jayne Hall at Student Reception, with your 100 points of identification. Also if you do not have a current RAN certificate please contact Student Reception. Please remember both the Police Clearance and RAN Certificate can take time to obtain. We would greatly appreciate your assistance by filling in the tear-off slip below and returning it to the school ASAP.
