From the Principal Brighton still has many events with only a couple of weeks left in the school year. Year 10 students are looking forward to Australian Business Week; the volleyballers are off to the annual Melbourne competition and the Year 8 and 9 panels are in train. I was delighted to receive an email from the Rotary Club of Victor Harbor congratulating our polite Year 12 students during Schoolies week. They were described as a credit to their school.
Sue Rodger, Greg Sukochev, Hannah Nielsen (Hall of Famers), Simon Naismith and Olivia O’Neill at the Sports Presentation Evening.
So many staff go above and beyond to provide opportunities for the students, such as the Shakespeare Festival; the Sports Presentation evening; the Charities and Recognition Assembly; the National Flip Con conference; the Think Bright celebration of the first class to complete the three years and the Year 7 visits, to name but a few this term. The students will attend half-days in Week 9 to provide some extra time for the teachers to prepare for 2017. During this week, the Leaders attend the annual full-day planning conference to set the school’s priorities for next year.

We are sad to farewell staff who are retiring and wish them well after so many decades of service to young people. These staff will be celebrated at a special retirement function on Thursday 15th December after school. You may like to send them an email if they have impacted your child’s education. I know they would appreciate it.

Action for Happiness Taking Action For Happiness Day – Year 11 Optimum Psychology The Year 11 Psychology Taking Action for Happiness application task required students to attempt to display aspects of flow (being fully engaged in the moment) and PERMA (components of psychological wellbeing) not often visible in a busy school environment. This was achieved through group cooperation where the students were given a wide range of choices in what they could achieve in the 45 minute lunchtime allocated to this task. Activities developed and provided for students and staff on Tuesday 22nd November included handing out free fairy floss accompanied by a positive quote, opportunities to express gratitude in a variety of ways, participate in mindful challenges, and be the recipient of a random act of kindness. The goal was to inspire a feeling of wellbeing in those attending Brighton Secondary School within a funding limit of twenty dollars per group. The act of inspiring hedonistic happiness in other people wasn’t just great fun, but also displayed the pillars of Dr. Martin Seligman’s PERMA model of wellbeing and other theoretical underpinnings. Altruistic deeds of kindness have been scientifically supported by psychology experiments such as those undertaken by Professor of Psychology Sonja Lyubomirsky and found to have positive effects. Lyubomirsky “tested whether asking people to ‘commit’ five random acts of kindness would reliably increase their level of positive emotion,” (Dean, B.n.d.).
The results positively supported this hypothesis. Another experiment by Dr. Barbara Fredrickson tested the impact of positive emotions on the brain, and uncovered the fact that “when you are experiencing positive emotions like joy, contentment, and love, you will see more possibilities in your life,” (Clear, J 2013). This displays the importance of the many actions for happiness and their effect on a person’s basic processes (thoughts, memories, learning) and their positive emotions thereby altering their sense of wellbeing. Through this Taking Action for Happiness Day, Psychology students discovered the power of positivity not only for recipients of their deeds but also for themselves as givers. This is reflected in comments made in their written reports of which these are a sample. Our activity was immensely successful; we received wonderful, if not emotional responses. It was an amazing feeling watching people’s faces light up and feel instantly happy from our random acts of kindness. Each staff member responded exactly how we thought; they presented us with huge smiles and some tears. From the feedback our group received, the staff members gained hedonic happiness from our activity as they obtained temporary satisfaction from giving and/or receiving a random act of kindness. They reported that they gained a sense of happiness and appreciation for what we had done for them. - Mollie So, the day was, in what I observed, a grand success and fulfilled its role to spread happiness very well. To the point where, … people felt sort of comfortable to dance a tiny bit while others just laughed and laughed... also just generally having a good time and actually kind of engaging in the moment more than worrying about anything else. - Jai
I have learnt that we need to spread positivity around the school more often by doing more things like we did. Our school doesn’t have many activities that the majority of the school will get involved in. Having little things like this can make it more of a community and make school a better place to be at. Random acts of kindness that were performed helped spread a positive vibe within the school creating a fun lunch that many people came out to. - Jess Our random acts of kindness went better than planned and had great success. Not only did the recipients feel happier but our group members also did afterwards. We wanted to show appreciation for people and make them feel good and I believe we succeeded in that. - Blake I have become more empowered through having to take charge where I wouldn’t normally, as well as contribute to something that requires bravery and confidence, which are characteristics I need to work on. - Cheyenne

Music News Jazz Cabaret On Friday 28th October 2016, Brighton Secondary School’s annual Jazz Cabaret was held at The Grand Ballroom. The night kicked off with entry music performed by a small jazz ensemble made up of Year 10 students. They have performed regularly together throughout this year at school events. The members are Lizzy Hartley, Marcus Formato, Yoni Rex-McGirr, Angela Winter and Alex Witty. The James Brown Experience, a 12-piece ensemble formed to develop the improvising skills of students played several of their own compositions and standards which featured cool grooves and lyrical soloists. The ‘house band’ of Andrew Barrett (piano), Mark Cameron-Smith (bass), together with drummers Tim Braslavskiy and Oliver Ryan accompanied three featured soloists as they sang Honeysuckle Rose (Jessica Delbridge), Adele’s Daydreamer (Amber Timms) and the Latin classic, Besame Mucho (Gillian Taylor). Big Band 2 took to the stage soon after the soloists and performed 7 songs from their 2016 repertoire which included solos from numerous band members. More soloists were then showcased performing songs in keeping with the Latin theme of the night: The Look of Love (Sofia Dilettoso), Dindi (Kayla Ikeeboh and Michaela Higgins), and Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps (Chloe Bentley with Craig Bentley, Cheryl Bentley and Dylan Bentley). The soloists’ set concluded with a duet of the most recognisable Latin Jazz standard, The “Boy/Girl” from Ipanema (Olivia Hallam and Hanz Matutina). Big Band 1’s Latin influenced set wowed the audience with 8 highly musical and technically brilliant performances. The evening concluded with Big Band 3 (Big Band 1 and 2 added together) playing Soul Bossa Nova - most recognisable from the Austin Powers motion picture. Special thanks to Josh Smart, Billy James and Year 11 Sound Technology class, Brett Curruthers, and Pam Parsons for all their work in the lead up to, and during, what was another brilliant evening of music.

Remembrance Day This year, we once again travelled to West Terrace Cemetery for the Remembrance Day Service. The Year 10 choir performed Advance Australia Fair, O Valiant Hearts and Coming Home – a song composed in honour of diggers returning home by Australian composer Harley Mead. Meanwhile, the school paused to commemorate Remembrance Day with Year 9 musician Jayden Doe performing The Last Post.
Year 8 – 10 Showcase On Tuesday 15th November, our year level choirs, bands and string orchestras were in the spotlight for our 8 – 10 Showcase. Most groups performed two items as well as a combined piece. The evening was a great success and a fitting conclusion to all the hard work in the classroom in 2016. We were delighted that so many of our 2017 Year 8s were able to join us for this event.
Governor’s Leadership Foundation Brighton Secondary School hosted the Governor’s Leadership Foundation presentation evening on Tuesday 22nd November. The Amoroso String Quartet performed background music before the event and the Vice-Regal Salute. Congratulations to Amber Timms who has been selected for the 2017 Class of Cabaret.

Shakespeare Festival On Thursday, November 24, the Year 10s held the annual BSS Shakespeare Festival to celebrate the life and times of the bard and his tragic play, Romeo and Juliet. Ms Kershaw, our festival organiser, welcomed students to the theatre with a poetic speech outlining why we study Shakespeare and his ongoing legacy. Ms Martin’s class put on a very professional production of key scenes from the play including the beautiful balcony scene, a happy reimagined wedding ceremony, the fiery duel between the hot-headed young men and the sad death of the young lovers. During the event all the Year 10 English classes presented their work including displays about the Elizabethan era and an interactive Shakespeare Expo where students could buy potions, portraits, music, maps and mayhem. Students also prepared a Medieval Feast which was a hit with delicious honey cakes, spice biscuits and jellies and nine decorated cakes were entered into the Wedding Cake competition. As part of the wedding celebrations, swordsmen also duelled and instructed some brave students to have a go and an authentic Punch and Judy show was certainly… different! Mr Gohl’s class gave the shortest rendition of the play - 28 seconds, for the Guinness Book of Records while other students acted out Western versions of the play, read poetry and played medieval music. Congratulations to all the Year 10 English and EAL students and the Year 10 teachers on a terrific Shakespeare Festival! Deborah Smith English Coordinator

Outdoor Pursuits Canoeing Camps During weeks 3 and 4 of this term, our Year 10 Outdoor Pursuits classes embarked on their canoeing expeditions. Due to the Murray River high water flows flooding our usual backwaters area of Katarapko, we set off on an adventure to a new section of the Murray. Loch Luna is located in the floodplains near Kingston on Murray, which joins Lake Bonney. The thin creeks and open lakes are surrounded by reeds, red gums and black box gum trees. Our students demonstrated excellent environmental etiquette, supported one another as group members and showed personal responsibility and resilience. The Coffee Cart has given students the opportunity to serve customers and sell and make a range of different coffees whilst being under pressure. Students have been able to use the knowledge and skills acquired during the course, whilst running the Coffee Cart. The cart has been used at a number of events including lunchtime service, Harmony Day, Sports Day, V-Gen Fairtrade event, Flipcon, Biggest Morning Tea and the Volunteers morning tea. Money raised during the course has helped to buy a tablet computer for taking orders, a vacuum for cleaning up ground coffee and servicing the machines. Year 9 Drama In week 7, Year 9 Drama performed their final piece for the year titled: ‘The Undoing of Strapp’. The 25-minute comedy is about a group of students on camp who discover that one of the camp leaders has been up to no good. As the group embarks on some detective work, they find out that Strapp has been selling the camp food and pocketing the money for himself. The class was divided into two groups for this task and each group had their own director. Together they set about taking the script from ‘page to stage’. The lead up 4-week rehearsal period enabled students to develop in particular their ensemble skills and actor’s tools. Each group’s final performance was unique and demonstrated quality group and individual performances that exceeded their age group. Well done Year 9’s and we look forward to seeing many of you again next year in Drama and we wish you all and your families all the best for the Christmas break. Clynton Oakley Drama Teacher

Flip Con Conference At Brighton November 17-19 marked a special occasion for Brighton Secondary School. We were chosen to host the national conference for Flipped Learning Educators – FlipCon Adelaide. The conference was led by Jon Bergmann – pioneer of the flipped learning approach and author of several books on the topic. He chose our school as a suitable venue after being very impressed during a visit to Brighton in 2015 to work with our staff. Our school stands out as one of the leaders in the country at utilizing technology to maximise face-to-face class time and the participants were eager to see our program in action. The conference was attended by over 200 primary, secondary and tertiary educators from around Australia. FlipCon was a huge success at Brighton. The conference itself was absolutely brilliant and everyone involved had nothing but praise for our staff, students and facilities. A highlight of the event was the classroom visits on Friday morning. We thank Ross Service, Narelle Brennan, Jamie Tester, Jeff Healy, Tony Mahar, Catherine Carter and their students for inviting participants into their classrooms to observe the challenging and engaging active learning that was taking place. The participants were impressed with, and inspired by, what they saw. We also thank our workshop presenters, Toby Ward, Aimee Shattock, Maj-Lis BorgenSmith and Patrick Mackay who provided high quality sessions throughout the event. Brett Carruthers and the AV team and Sean Brennan and the IT Services team ensured that the event ran smoothly and professionally. A huge thank you to them. It was a huge success and a result of a massive team effort. Jeremy LeCornu Digital Learning Coordinator

Lift Dance Theatre On Friday December 2nd the Adelaide Fringe Festival Guide 2017 was launched in Rundle Mall. The Lift dancers gathered behind the Museum for a choreographic rehearsal with Larissa MacGowan, recently a dancer with the Australian Dance Theatre, and then marched with unicorn masks to the corporate area in the Mall where they became a flash mob. A short walk down to the East End took them to Vardon Street where a band was playing and Channel 10 was doing a live cross. They became the dancing backdrop to the weather. In week 9 the dancers will travel to six of our feeder primary schools to perform and do a Q & A for grades six and seven before the intense rehearsals through January and February as we lead into the Fringe and our production of Etre. Year 8/9 Boys Knock Out Table Tennis On Thursday 20th October the Year 8/9 Boys Table Tennis Team played at Wirreanda High in the preliminary round of the SSSSA competition. In a tight contest we won on a count-back which saw us through to the state finals. Held at Woodville Table Tennis Club on 8th November, the boys were involved in an all day tournament. In the round robin stage the boys found the going tough losing to Temple Christian College and Glenunga International High School. This qualified us for the 3v4 playoff against Parafield Gardens High. They battled hard in what was a competitive finish of a very high standard of play, only to go down 4-2. Team members included Harry Takos, Dion Zaric, Costa Burston and Oscar Ward. Shane Durbridge Volleyball Teacher

The girls continued their good form winning in straight sets. This had us pitted against regular rival Heathfield who had won a close match against Renmark to make their way through to the state final. The girls made a strong start in the best of 3 set contest, playing their best volleyball of the tournament, winning the first set comfortably.
Heathfield rallied in the second set to level it at 1-1. They took this momentum into the final set and at one stage led 12-8. With only 3 points to win the title and our girls down on confidence and up on errors, it appeared we were out of the contest. Enter Eliza Jones. Combined with some great blocking and an Imogen Birt - Alex Stewart combination, she was able to absorb the pressure of 2 time-outs and a building crowd to serve us to victory! A moment I am sure she will never forget. Other players to be congratulated include Bonnie Hart, Hannah Hosking, Lauren Sharpe, Sarah Lusher, Nikki Farquhar, Zoe Maland, Eden Fitzpatrick and Amy Bell. Shane Durbridge Coach

Year 8/9 Softball State Finals Bonnie Hart, Kasey Bennett, Abby Chalmers, Amy Fisher, Georgia Hall, Bailee Kendall, Lauren Sharpe, Allysha Sims, McKenzie Ween and Charlotte Woodroffe represented Brighton Secondary School in the Year 8/9 Girls’ Softball State Knockout Finals at the West Beach Softball Headquarters on 24th November. The girls were still on a high after their 7-0 runs final innings which saw them sneak home against Seaton High School 1312 and qualify for the State Finals. The team finished 3rd at the conclusion of the day and had steady improvement throughout the day. This was evident in their last minor round game against the eventual winners Mt Gambier High School which saw Brighton beaten 6-2.
Thanks to Mr Archer (Sports Coordinator) and parents Nicole Ween (scoring) and Matthew Ween (base coaching) for your assistance and support. Troy Jacques Physical Education Teacher
Exams Two weeks of Year 12 Final exams have just concluded at Brighton Secondary. Students across the state now have a nervous wait for results available on December 20th. Throughout the two weeks almost 500 Year 12 exams were completed across 20 subjects! Nothing stands still at Brighton Secondary though! Year 11 exams kicked off two days later on Wednesday 23rd November with Specialist and General Mathematics filling the exam hall. 125 students packed the Brighton Senior Study Centre to have a chance of experiencing senior school exam conditions. I felt nervous going in, and then I felt rushed throughout the exam. After I felt relieved though, but now I have three more exams! I have had to plan my study in advance to allow for the exams all together. - Mikhaela H Over the course of Year 11 and 12 the typical Brighton student will complete 10 – 15 exams prior to the final Year 12 exams. These opportunities are provided to make the final Year 12 exams less daunting and allow the students the chance to complete an exam surrounded by other students in a very formal setting in silence….No Facebook for 3 hours! Despite the gruelling experience, students see the value in the experience.

It was good to practise. I have General Maths in Year 12 and having exams makes me study more. Being in the exam hall was good too, to see what it’s like. - Kiara P Tristan Kouwenhoven Assistant Principal Senior Schooling
