Newsletter ISSUE 8 I November 2016
From the Principal Recently, Brighton Secondary has had a high profile on the world stage. Congratulations to Year 10 students Nicole Kascak, Jesse Stevens and Luke Battjes who won second place in the F1 in Schools competition in Austin, Texas as well as the prestigious World Record for the fastest car. Congratulations to students Ellen Hamilton and Sung Bae who won Silver in the International Culinary Competition, beating one Japanese and two French culinary schools in the process. Other outstanding showcase events this term included the Year 12 Valedictory, the Jazz Cabaret and Lift Dance. All DECD schools are externally reviewed. Our School Review was in the last week of Term 3. The school develops two or three lines of inquiry for the Review Panellists to collect evidence. Our inquiries were as follows: 1. To what extent is learner voice evident across the campus? 2. As all students have a device and staff have multiple devices including interactive projectors, to what extent is challenge evident in the task design? 3. To what extent are the school’s professional learning and performance development processes effective in building teacher capacity to stretch and challenge the students.
The Review Panel was most complimentary about the diversity of opportunities available to students at Brighton. They offered the following directions for us to explore over the next four years before we are reviewed again: 1. Develop coherent, whole school, expectations that all students will achieve their potential. 2. Create expectations of, and opportunities for students to be responsible for their learning, so that staff and students are accountable for improved outcomes. 3. Embed professional learning into consistent and accountable pedagogical and assessment practices, to challenge all students to achieve their potential. 4. Raise the expectations of leaders and teachers to use data accountably to inform their work, and use Daymap to store and share their professional documentation and communicate with colleagues, students and parents. The official report will be published on the school’s web site as soon as it is available. Last week our Holdfast Partnership had its Annual Review resulting in similar directions regarding Learner Voice, use of data and engaging parents.

Culinary Mountain Bike Challenge Challenge Congratulations to Sung Bae and Ellen Hamilton for receiving a silver medal in the ‘International Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge’ held in Sydney recently. They competed against some of the top culinary schools around the world, made lifelong friendships and met some incredibly prestigious chefs along the way. Both students worked together to produce a beautifully presented chicken roulade with pumpkin puree, turned potato and blueberry chicken sauce. Ellen and Sung practised for numerous hours after school to perfect their dish. Well done on this amazing achievement!
Congratulations to the boys who represented Brighton in this year’s challenge. Well done to Luka Moase, who came 3rd in the Individual U15 event. Fastest F1 in Schools Car in the World! 2nd position, World F1 in Schools Finals, Hyatt Regency, Austin, Texas, USA. Brighton Secondary School has taken on the world in the name of STEM - F1 in Schools, and was good enough to finish overall 2nd in the World Finals. In the process, we produced a brilliant F1 car running system, which when assembled with their designed Launch Energy Recovery System (LERS), smashed the world record, to post an incredible .916 of a second, for the 20metre sprint! It is now the fastest F1 in Schools car on the planet, ever. We won the coveted Fastest Car award, and featured strongly in many other categories to finish a close second, to a team of Year 12 students from Greece. The Brighton Secondary School team consisted of Nicole Kascak, Jesse Stevens and Luke Battjes, and we collaborated with the 4th placed National finalist, St Bede’s College, from Melbourne. One of the features of our team campaign was the wonderful Pit Display. The purpose of this display is to showcase the team branding, and highlight their design processes. It was named in the top three at the event. Following their victory, the team were treated to Paddock Tours and a visit to the Mercedes F1 garage, at the Circuit of the America’s track in Austin.

Pictured are the two fastest F1 cars in the world, i.e. the Nico Rosberg Mercedes, and sitting top of his car, are the two Brighton world record F1 in Schools cars. Not bad! Pictured in the Mercedes Garage, with the Fastest Car and COTA trophies, are Jesse Stevens and Luke Battjes who designed and manufactured this wonderful piece of STEM engineering. They combined principles of aerodynamics, mathematics, and complex Numeric Coding to produce these cars. The primary and backup racecars are worth in excess of $1000 each, and feature many advanced assembly techniques.

They tested their design concepts using a variety of methods, including: (i) Finite Element Analysis (FEA) (ii) Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) (iii) Using 3D printed prototyping (iv) A minimum of 150 tests on the track. (v) A range of digital assemblies (vi) Coding and manufacturing prototype vehicles (vii) Several codes for wheel and axle designs. Nicole was the team manager, and was responsible for the overall success of the team. We collaborated with 3 students from Melbourne, who finished 4th at the recent National Finals in Penrith. Nicole had the difficult role to liaise with both parties on a regular basis. The F1 in Schools campaign is multifaceted, and requires far more than just the engineering of the car. Nicole is to be congratulated for her world-class communication and organisational skills. Pictured here is the team one minute after breaking the World Record, and pointing to the digital readout official time of .916 of a second. Volleyball News Special Interest Volleyball - Quiz Night On August 27, the Brighton Secondary, Special Interest Volleyball Parent Committee; held a very successful quiz night in the school gym. This was the first major fundraising initiative of the SIV Parent Committee for quite some time. The committee worked very hard to create a fun filled evening for all; including games, raffles, auction items, prizes and activities. The quiz night was attended by over 250 parents, friends and students who clearly had a wonderful time while also contributing to the amazing $6,000 raised on the night. The money raised will contribute to the purchase of a shade structure for the Beach Courts for the Special Interest Volleyball program. The SIV Parent Committee wishes to thank all local businesses and organisations who contributed donations for prizes, auction items and the very successful wine wall. There were many who donated generously but to mention just a few – LG, Peter Shearer Menswear, the Marion Swimming and Aquatic Centre, the Richmond Hotel in the city, Corey Wingard, Ashley Williams, Brunnings garden products, the Bay Hotel Motel, the Broadway Hotel and many, many more. Special thanks must also go out to Tom West and Nick Blewett who very kindly donated their time to develop and run the quiz night. Without a great Quiz master and their side kick – there is no quiz night. As Chairperson of the SIV Parent Committee I would personally like to thank the amazing members of the committee who put in many hours of work to make the first quiz night in 5 years such a wonderful success. It was a truly amazing achievement from a small group of dedicated and energetic parents. From little things, big things grow! Stay tuned for the 2017 fundraising event which will be open to all Brighton Secondary families and friends. Tish Champion SIV Parent Committee

Year 9 Volleyball Challenge On Monday 21st September, Brighton Secondary School participated in the annual ‘Year 9 Volleyball Challenge’. Heathfield were our guests as three boys and three girls engaged in a series of round robin matches. Hallett Cove also hosted a similar event that included a further five Brighton teams. This format also included a round robin series before finishing with a champion of the court competition where students from both schools were randomly mixed. Year 11 SIV students were responsible for coaching our Year 9’s and in some cases joining them on the court. They were supportive of their younger peers and provided valuable feedback. This was reflected in the enthusiasm the players displayed and the pleasing standard of play. Players shared officiating duties including refereeing and scoring. To their credit, they performed these tasks admirably helping to ensure the day ran smoothly. Although the challenge was informal and official results not kept, the matches were played in a competitive yet friendly spirit. Many thanks to all the teachers and students and in particular Wayne Lancaster from Hallett Cove for an enjoyable experience. Shane Durbridge Volleyball Teacher

Music News In week 10 of term 3, Stage 2 Music students were assessed in their final performances by two visiting SACE markers. All students are to be congratulated on their hard work this year. We wish them well for their upcoming exams. On Friday 14th October, David Speirs, Member for Bright, hosted a party for everyone celebrating their 90th birthday this year in his electorate. The Amoroso String Quartet set the mood beautifully on this sunny afternoon as guests enjoyed refreshments in the shade of Townsend House. Other performers at the Primary Schools’ Festival of Music were Jasmine Duggan, Michelle Sienicki, Big Band 1 and the Boys Chamber Choir. Finally, we have now taken delivery of all components of our “Toy Cupboard”. Soon students will be able to borrow these items which include a drum machine, looping station, MIDI keyboard and sound module. Andrew Barrett Head of Music

Outdoor Education SACE Stage 1 Outdoor Education Glenelg River Kayaking Expedition On Tuesday 25th October we packed the trailer and headed off in the bus to the Glenelg River for our kayaking expedition. It was a 6½ hour drive, but when we arrived and saw how lush, green and stunningly beautiful the environment was, the hours spent in the bus became a distant memory. The stringy barks were abundant, and the understory was a mass of Bracken ferns, Wattle and Tea Tree. We were lucky enough to spot a koala high in the Eucalypts while we were paddling. With the recent flooding of the river, there was a lot of mud on the banks and this made for some challenging entrances and exits from the river. We worked well as a group and supported one another, so everyone felt safe and had a positive experience. Our second days’ paddle was a challenging 20km. We felt tired at the end of the day and slept well, satisfied with our accomplishment. The Princess Margret Rose cave tour on our third day was a highlight. The formations were stunning, particularly the impressive “Wedding Cake” pillar and the “Chandelier”. It was a fantastic experience and the group bonded together really well. Geography News Year 8 Geography Costal Field Trip September 20th The big idea for Year 8 Geography in Term 3 had been: Is it possible to slow coastal erosion and to change costal landscapes if we can understand the physical processes and human activities along Adelaide’s coastline? After studying the physical and human impacts, and analysing Adelaide’s Living Beach Strategy the plan was to undertake some hands on fieldwork along our coastline. On a cold drizzly Tuesday morning in week 9 the class set out to see first-hand Adelaide’s strategy to tackle coastal erosion. The specifically designed field trip started at The Glenelg Gates and moved through the marina, Glenelg Jetty, Somerton Park Surf Life Saving Club and concluded at Wattle Reserve. Students participated in gathering data on points of interest, they recorded a range of photographs for future comparisons and were quite active in removing unwanted rubbish along our coastline. Year 9 Geography Biome Excursion September 23rd Year 9 Geography have been studying terrestrial and aquatic biomes. Biomes are communities of plants and animals that extend over large areas including forests, deserts, grasslands and marine environments. As part of their studies, the Year 9’s embarked on an excursion to see close up what these environments look like and the animals that inhabit them. On Friday week 9 the class visited the rainforest and wetland environments at the Adelaide Botanical Gardens. Then they made their way to see some of the fascinating animals and their habitats at the Adelaide Zoo. Among the many highlights of the day was the Macaw exhibition, where the South American bird flew through spectators. This really hit home to students the importance of looking after our rainforests where much of the world’s wildlife resides. Clynton Oakley Geography Teacher
“This day out not only allowed us to learn about biomes but also it gave us a chance to learn more about our classmates” – Heidi Brewster “I enjoyed the trip to the Zoo a lot. It was really fun hanging out with friends and the teachers. A really awesome day out” – Wen Chen “I enjoyed the trip to the Botanical Gardens and the Zoo. It was more memorable than just looking at photos in the classroom. It was great to explore the outdoors with our classmates” – Zoe Maland “I enjoyed our trip to the Zoo. It was great to see all the animals in their biomes after all the work we had done on them” – Imogen Birt “It was a great day learning about the animals and their natural habitats. Lift Dance Theatre ETRE Workshop Performance October 20th After six months of development work from the dancers it was time to put the result in front of an audience under lights. The two day season showed the potential of ETRE with its power and lyricism. The audience saw for the first time how a concept and a floor design of coloured lights can be developed from words. The choreographic vocabulary recycled continually as it evolved from a common beginning and over three sections the colours reflected the overall mood while the rigid Mondrian patterning created a framework. After a further three months of development, ETRE will take its place in the 2017 Fringe.
