We have experienced a school year full of wonder and success, thanks to the students and staff of Brighton. They can all be very proud of their accomplishments. The Charities and Recognition assembly was a fitting celebration of students’ hard work and commitment to their studies and the community. There are many events that only occur because the staff put in time after hours: The Shakespeare Festival; the Sports Presentation Evening; the Think Bright Expo Year 9; the Think Bright final celebration in Year 10; the Year 9 Citizenship for Humanity assembly; the Thinking Carnival; the Year 12 Valedictory, just to name a few since the last newsletter. It was a delight to accompany Assistant Principals, Jill Brindley and Kane Hillman with four of our White Ribbon Ambassadors at the White

Ribbon breakfast at the Convention Centre. Next year our student Action Teams will progress a range of projects to support those less fortunate as well as showcasing innovative ideas. The “Thinking Carnival” held at West Lakes Resort, brought 170 students together to compete in teams of five to solve a problem from each of the representative schools in the south-western region. This inaugural event was most successful evidenced by positive student feedback. I expect it will develop and be an annual event.

Beginning of 2018 Year 8 students commence school on Monday 29th January 2018, 8.40am Year 8 students will meet their House Leader in the following places: • Buffalo – central courtyard • Cygnet – front oval (under the trees) • Holdfast – Brighton Theatre (in the foyer) • Rapid – Gymnasium Year 8 students will be able to check their Home Group when they come to pay school fees on the dates listed below. These Home Group lists will also be placed around the school on day 1. As per our timetable, the end of the school day on Tuesdays will be 2.30pm. The end of the school day on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays will be 3.15pm. Year 12 students commence school on Monday 29th January 2018, 9.15am. They are to meet in the Brighton Concert Hall foyer. Years 9, 10 and 11 students commence school on Tuesday 30th January 2018, 8.40am. Years 9, 10 and 11 students go to the central courtyard to determine Home Group rooms and proceed directly to Home Group. Room allocations will be posted on windows facing the central courtyard. New students to the school in Years 9-12, please meet in the Front Office foyer. Fee Collection Details for 2018 The school will be open for collection of school fees on Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd January 2018 from 9.00am to 2.30pm. This will be operated from Student Reception.
CONGRATULATIONS Katharine Dowling, Year 11, who has been chosen to represent in the SA Girls Under 16 Hockey team at the School Pacific Games in Adelaide in December.
“MOVEMBER” FUNDRAISER In Term 4 several BSS staff members raised money for the Movember foundation. The foundation aims to address some of the biggest health issues facing men: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention. On Thursday 30th of 'Movember' during recess, Mr Sizer, Mr Hillman, Mr Valamanesh and Mr Oakley shaved off their MOES for charity. In total the BSS Movember team raised $891! The team would like to thank all of those teachers, students and parents who donated to the cause. Top effort everyone!

SPORTS PRESENTATION EVENING We recognised the outstanding sporting achievements of Brighton Secondary students at our annual Sports Presentation Evening held in the concert hall Monday 20th November. Premiership teams included 8/9 Girls KO Volleyball, Year 10 Girls KO Volleyball, Year 10 Boys KO Volleyball, Open Girls KO Volleyball, Open Boys KO Volleyball, Open Girls Zone Netball Premiers , 8/9 Girls Zone Soccer and 8/9 Boys Zone Soccer. We also recognised Swimming Standards and Athletics Standards Winners, Junior Sports Person of the year, Senior Sports Person of the year and our State Cup Volleyball gold medal winners. The night was truly a celebration of our students sporting endeavors. In 2017, over 100 Brighton Secondary School students have been selected and represented South Australia in sporting competitions. We also have five Australian representatives and four Australian development squad representatives. Corey Wingard shared stories of his experiences as an old scholar and Sports journalist as MC. Ex Olympian, Bea Daly was inducted into our Sporting Hall of Fame. In her presentation she inspired and encouraged our students to persevere through the hard times, relish the good times, appreciate others support and believe in themselves, to achieve their goals. It was a very successful evening, congratulations to the Health and Physical Education and Volleyball faculties for their organisation and commitment to conduct this event. THINK BRIGHT EXPO The Year 9 Think Bright students were busy building their Challenge Based Projects (CBP) over the course of Semester 2. There were many phases of the project, from inception, group critiquing, a comprehensive folio of research, the product itself, then an expo and evaluation. The Expo allowed students to showcase the amazing projects they have tackled. These ranged from TV shows, animations, video games, scientific experiments, social justice programs, charity profiles to books with hundreds of pages. How often in life do we get the time to create something large and meaningful to us? This subject was designed to support students to build their passion up in a helpful and cohesive environment. The Think Bright team is immensely proud of the achievements of the Think Bright CBP students and excited to see what they accomplish next year. Jack Egan Think Bright Teacher
DEBATING The Brighton Blues Year 9 Debating team ranked third out of thirty four teams when they entered the quarter finals in the Debating South Australia competition this year. Aidan Damarell and Finn Mastersson, were each awarded 2 certificates for being the Best Speaker on the night, during the season. Hayley Farquar was a tireless researcher, and Olivia Douros and Cheyenne Gordon-Clark helped with organisation and support. This team did not need a coach. CITIZENSHIP FOR HUMANITY PROJECT Home Group 903 Buffalo worked to support the homeless in the local area for their Citizenship for Humanity Project. They ran two fundraisers, Guess How Many in the Jar and Spring Bulbs to Support the Homeless, raising money to create 24 substantial healthy food and hygiene packs for the homeless. In September, they organised a sleepout in the school quadrangle to experience what it is like to sleep rough and raised enough money to buy 20 sleeping mats for homeless youth. RAPID MORNING TEA CELEBRATING SUCCESS On Thursday 9th November Rapid House held a morning tea to celebrate the achievement of many of our Rapid students who had worked hard to achieve outstanding results in Term 3. MUSIC NEWS Porkie Shield On Tuesday the 5th of September, I had the absolute honour of singing the national anthem for the 7th Battalion – The Royal Australian Regiment’s Porkie Shield double header event. I sang the anthem twice to open both the rugby and then football games. It was attended by dignitaries from the Australian Army and the City of Holdfast Bay Council making it a moment of great privilege. Despite being a cold and miserable day there was a great turn out to support our hard working troops. Sadly, Darwin’s five RAH were unable to participate as they were deployed overseas, leaving it to two Adelaide teams to battle it out for the shield. Then on Sunday the 17th of September the City to Bay Fun Run was held. I provided some entertainment, beginning at 8.30am welcoming the first runners until the last participant walked past at 12.15pm. The weather was perfect for the event this year making the day even better. It was gratifying to see the runners with smiles on their faces as they went past, singing along with me. The highlight however for me would be when Ronald McDonald came over and joined in with a song. Jasmine Duggan Year 11 Student
Bassoon Quartet On the 1st of November, four bassoon players from Brighton formed a group called the Brighton Bassoon Quartet, performing at the Southern Metropolitan Music Festival at Hopgood Theatre. Gina Sinclair, Lily Liao, Liam McQuinn and Josh D’Sa performed James Bond vs Batman, arranged by their teacher Sam Penny. Many audience members had never seen or heard a bassoon before, so it was great opportunity to show off this instrument. The performance was well received. Lily Liao Year 11 Student
Showcase 2 On the evening of Tuesday 14th November, Brighton Music held Showcase 2, a concert to showcase the musical talents of the Year 8-10 students at our school. Showcase 2 was a fun night of music and entertainment. We heard a range of pieces varying from the 1960s Beatles’ classic Blackbird performed by the Year 9 Boys’ Choir, to the captivating performance of Predators of the Deep by the Year 8 Band. Over the course of the night, we heard performances from choirs, string ensembles and bands exploring a variety of different styles of music including jazz, rock, classical and TV and film soundtracks. It was a strong performance by all of the students under the guiding hands of the music directors, who ensured the concert ran smoothly. The night concluded with a bombastic performance of Justin Timberlake’s pop hit Can’t Stop the Feeling from all Year 8-10 band and strings performers, continuing the Showcase tradition and bringing another successful showcase to an end. MUSIC NEWS continued Year 10 Performance Practice This term’s learning for the Year 10 Performance Practice class was centred on preparing for performance in a recording studio setting. The preparation both mentally and musically contrasts to that of a live performance. In addition, the performance psychology in the studio also varies greatly. This unit of work concluded with an excursion to Wizard Tone Studios, one of Adelaide’s leading recording studios, for the students to record their track for assessment. The students had the opportunity to become familiar with a recording setting and work one on one with James Brown, producer and engineer at the studio in mixing their tracks. The tracks were compiled to create a digital class album which students could use as an artefact of their learning. It was a privilege and pleasure to work with the talented Year 10s, and we extend a heartfelt thanks to James Brown and Wizard Tone Studios. Primary Schools’ Concert Band Workshop I wish to acknowledge the leadership demonstrated by Year 8 students Owen Davies, Harry Edwards, Lewis Edwards, Mina Johansson, Jacob Warburton, Cameron Wright and Kevin Xia as they mentored younger musicians at the Primary Schools’ Concert Band Workshop at the Adelaide Showgrounds on the 1st November.
New Music Concert Congratulations to composers Esmond Choi, Alevia Evci, Leah Komad-Antic, Jackson Mack, Ben Waltho and Angela Winter for presenting their works at the 2017 New Music Concert on the 6th November. Thanks also to the dedicated team of performers who performed the compositions and arrangements.
Remembrance Day As has become a tradition in recent years, Brighton Secondary School provided the music for the Remembrance Day Service at West Terrace Cemetery.
AMEB Exam Results Year 9 student Ben Cook received an A+ for his 8th Grade AMEB Classical Piano exam and has subsequently been awarded the "Thelma Dent AMEB Prize" for the best 8th Grade student of the year. SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL On Wednesday 29th November, the Year 10s held the annual Brighton Secondary School Shakespeare Festival to celebrate the life and times of the bard and his works. Ms Kershaw, the festival organiser, welcomed students to the theatre with an inspiring speech outlining why students study Shakespeare and his ongoing legacy. The students were highly entertained by swordsmen, with some brave volunteers challenging the master duellers, and an inspiring juggler, who had the audience mesmerised. Ms McDonnell’s Drama class performed a very professional modern version of Romeo and Juliet. Some students performed live and others provided films, sharing their interpretations of the play. Mr Gohl’s class beat the record for the shortest rendition of the play for the Guinness Book of Records. Ms Carter’s class shocked audience members with their flash mob of Shakespearian insults.
During the event, the Year 10 English classes presented some wonderful displays about the Elizabethan era, including a herbalist display and a handmade Elizabethan costume, as well as some very informative descriptions of the lifestyles and practices of the Elizabethan people. Students also prepared a delicious Elizabethan Feast from shepherd’s pie to shortbread. There was also a wedding cake competition, where students baked and decorated with traditional recipes. VISUAL ARTS NEWS TARNANTHI - Festival of Contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art. Tarnanthi presents the art of Australia’s rich and diverse Indigenous culture. 'TARNANTHI has shed light on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art and culture in a way that we have never seen before'. Nick Mitzevich Two Year 8 Art classes visited the exhibition with their teachers, Ms Kinge, Ms Paterson, Ms Evans and Ms Golding on 28th November. The groups toured through this magnificent collection of contemporary works guided by Ms Evans who explained the relevance and meaning of significant pieces. Both groups also participated in the Studio Workshop exploring the ‘ghost nets’ through a making activity. This was a wonderful exhibition and a valuable learning link to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art and culture.
Year 12 Visual Art, Design and Photography Final Exhibition Display The final exhibition of Year 12 works was held in the Concert Hall Foyer on the 7th of November. Parents and friends warmly supported the students and enjoyed viewing many creative pieces. YEARS 8-9 2017 STATE BEACH VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS On the 13th November, 170 students from the Special Interest Volleyball program descended on Glenelg beach for the annual ‘VSA Schools Beach Volleyball Festival’.

We entered 40 teams across four different divisions for boys and girls competing against teams from Charles Campbell, Reynella East and Woodcroft College. Very warm conditions throughout the 4 A-Side competition made it tough going for all competitors. Pleasingly, we were successful in winning every gold and silver medal on offer. Most importantly, the students’ behaviour and sportsmanship was overall very good. They competed fiercely but fairly and were excellent ambassadors for the school.

YEAR 8/9 KO STATE FINALS On Friday 10th November our Year 8/9 Girls Volleyball Team ventured to Heathfield for the SSSSA State-wide KO Finals. Automatically qualifying for the tournament denied our girls the chance to develop strategies and systems in match conditions. However, we were confident that our preparation and talents would see us compete strongly throughout the daylong event. The format involved six teams divided into two pools. Our first match was against Hallett Cove. Winning 3-0 made for a great start to the day. We were able to get good court time into the entire team, with each combination proving successful. In our last minor round game against Loxton, the girls were again successful in winning 3-0 inside the allocated 50-minute timeslot. Year 8’s Leticia Giancola and Tamika Lindsay proved their worth playing some super volleyball. This was particularly
impressive considering the girls had been incorrectly playing on a women’s height net! This saw us finish top of our pool and draw Renmark in the crossover semi final. Again the girls were successful winning the best of 3 set contest 2-0. This also enabled us to settle a starting line-up for the final against Heathfield. We started sensationally, playing our best volleyball of the day and winning the first set 25-11. As can often happen, things turned in the second set with the girls going down 1925. This presented a challenge of the girl’s character. Thankfully they were able to rally and wrap it up 15-11 in the third set. Whilst everyone made strong contributions throughout the day, standout performers included Dayna Kerruish in her role as libero, Michaela Kelly setting and spiking with Tamika dominating her position and showing composure when it mattered. Other team members (and state champions!) included Kasey Bennett, Charlotte Evans, Alex Cartney, Allysha Sims and Bailee Kendall. Shane Durbridge Volleyball Coach
WHITE RIBBON BREAKFAST The 10th anniversary of the Adelaide White Ribbon breakfast was held on Friday 24th November at the Adelaide Convention Centre. Students from the school’s White Ribbon Action Team attended with Principal Team members Olivia O’Neill, Jill Brindley and Kane Hillman. The Action Team consists of Year 11 students Alex Witty, Gilbert Richardson, Harrison McLeod and founding member Year 12 student Blake Evans. The White Ribbon breakfast acknowledged the school’s recent Q and A Event supporting the White Ribbon organisation as well as the Action Team’s White Ribbon ‘Sign the Pledge’ Day. CAN YOU HELP IN THE CANTEEN? The school Canteen offers excellent food services to students and staff. The school Canteen is a source of additional revenue for our school. The profits generated are used for providing additional educational amenities for the students. Over the years, the profits made at the Canteen have been a direct result of the amount of generous voluntary help parents have been prepared to provide. Parents involved with the Canteen have not only found it a worthwhile social activity by mixing with other volunteer parents, staff and students, but an excellent way to help them understand the structure and processes involved in their child’s school. We realise that many parents lead busy lives and are therefore offering some different time slots to encourage you to be involved in the school. Anytime that you are able to contribute will be greatly appreciated. On the day of volunteering you and your child will receive a free lunch.
