Newsletter ISSUE 3 I April 2013

From the Principal I am pleased to announce that as of 8th April Brighton Secondary School will have two building sites that herald in the new 21st Century Learning Centre and the 400 seat Recital Hall. The expected completion dates are 6th February 2014 and 21st October 2013 respectively.

You may like to nominate one or more Brighton teachers in the Excellence Awards. Simply go to www.decd.sa.gov.au/teachingawards and register in a short statement, why you think this teacher is eligible. It doesn’t take long but it would have long-term outcomes for student learning.

There will be NO student DROP-OFF at all anywhere on the school site. The front car park will have trucks, heavy equipment and staff cars; the back driveway only provides staff access. I ask parents to respect the safety of students, staff and builders by obeying the signage. There is no longer any student parking on site.

The staff Professional Development day on Friday 3rd May 2013 will explore the Cross Curriculum priority: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander priority provides opportunities for all learners to deepen their knowledge of Australia by engaging with the world’s oldest continuous living cultures. This knowledge and understanding will enrich their ability to participate positively in the ongoing development of Australia.

Asbestos removal occurs on 18th and 19th April during the school holidays. As information comes to hand I will keep you informed in a special section of the newsletter. Harmony Day, Standards Days and Sports Day were highlights of the term. The staff and student teams who organised these events are to be congratulated. Congratulations to the 2013 Prefects and Student Leaders who have taken up the leadership challenge and are making an impact on school tone.

All the staff will be involved in a Professional Learning field day incorporating the Living Kaurna Centre Marion, the natural environment of the Warriparinga Wetlands, the Tjilbruke trail, Coalbrooke House, Kingston Park, South Australian Museum, Migration Museum, Botanic Gardens and the Art Gallery. The Principal Team and I attended the Regional Conference with Professor Martin Westwell from Flinders University who was an excellent knowledgeable and inspiring speaker on teaching “Thinking”. The Region has secured him to present to the teachers and the coordinators on May 13th and June 5th respectively. His impact on teaching and learning will compensate for the teachers’ absence from classes on these days. Olivia O’Neill Principal

Harmony Day Students, staff and invited guests came together to celebrate Harmony Day on Thursday 21st March. The message of Harmony Day is Everyone Belongs and is a day where we celebrate our cultural diversity and stand against racism. In keeping with the theme of harmony and respect Brighton Secondary School also recognised on this day the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence with the release of the Holdfast Cluster schools anti-bullying brochure. A number of events were held throughout the day including assemblies, live music, world soccer and a BBQ lunch. Each of the assemblies were hosted by Head Prefects Jack Newton and Lucie Soldan and involved, a Welcome to Country, student presentations, music celebrating difference and an anti-bullying video called ‘Stand Up, Stand Up the Consequence of Words’.

Students from Brighton Secondary School who shared their cultural backgrounds at the assemblies were Natasha and Marcus Johnson (Aboriginal / Italian), Nadine Shammaa (Egyptian), Sonia Huang (Chinese), George Bournias (Greek), Jack Newton (Anglo-Australian) and Matheus Barcelos Carneriro (Brazilian). Invited guests from Thebarton Senior College’s New Arrivals Program also took part in the assemblies and were introduced by their teacher Adrienne Dobak. Brazilian students made brigadeiro, a favourite sweet and shared these with staff whilst others enjoyed a BBQ against a backdrop of music presented by the soon to be touring concert choir, accompanied by music staff. The Humanities and Social Sciences faculty involved students in Harmony Day activities throughout the week. It was a very happy Harmony Day and thank you to all involved.

Student Leadership A belated welcome to the 2013 School Year! Upon his retirement, a former Brighton High School principal noted that a key to a successful school is one where student voice is loudly heard and one where student involvement in activities is high. This was strongly shown by the student at Brighton Secondary School on Thursday, Week 7. As part of the Leukaemia Foundations World’s Greatest Shave, the Student Leadership Council’s (SLC) sub-committee Charities organised a student “Non-Uniform Day” and BBQ to raise money. Spearheaded by the Charities committee members and Year 12 Prefect, Michelle Lennon, the event was a major fundraising success with over $820 raised by the students and staff of Brighton Secondary School. Over $500 was raised through the Non-Uniform Day and a further $330 ($420 without expenses) from the BBQ event at lunchtime.

The Non-Uniform Day and BBQ sale would not have been a success without the help from the following team of Senior School students as well as Staff who assisted on the day. They are listed below. • Michelle Lennon (Yr 12) • Tayne Redman (Yr 12 • Sam Hall (Yr 12) • Talis Heggart (Yr 12) • Chloe Bremner (Yr 12) • Clare Djokic (Yr 12) • Adam Harry (Yr 12) • Kostas Kontos (Yr 12) • Ryan Wilson (Yr 12) • Ethan Wight (Yr 12)

With strong promotion through posters and extra assistance from Year 12 Prefects, Tayne Redman and Shaun Laperousaz, on the mega- phone, students came in droves and joined the queue that stretched nearly 30 metres long. Within 20 minutes, the 25kg of sausages ordered by Mr Monteodorisio (aka Mr M) and 150 cans of soft drink had sold out.

• Kyle Davis (Yr 12)

Many senior students commented that the BBQ and Non-Uniform Day was by far the biggest and best they had seen during their time at Brighton Secondary School and hoped that they would continue. We hope that every Brighton Secondary School student takes great pride in this amazing amount of money raised and continues to demonstrate the proud Brighton Secondary School spirit and tradition throughout the school year.

• Hannah Lambert (Yr 11)

• Aaron Steicke (Yr 12) • Shaun Laperousaz (Yr 12) • Harriet Clough (Yr 11) • Wade Whitington (Yr 11) • Michaela Bakurski (Yr 11) • Mr Monteodorisio • Mr Mahar • Ms Sutherland • Ms Brindley • Ms O’Neill • Leanne and Front Office • Marcia and the Canteen staff For many years, the Student Leadership Council has cooked a BBQ on Sports Day and this year was no different. The BBQ team led by Deputy Head Prefect, Ryan Wilson, sold sausages, patties, drinks, cakes, buns and chocolates raising more than $300.

On Wednesday Week 6, along with Ms O’Neill, we attended a community forum event hosted by the Honourable Dr Andrew Southcott, Federal Member for Boothby and featuring special guest, the Leader of the Opposition, the Honourable Mr Tony Abbott. Both Lucie and Jack were given the opportunity to ask Mr Abbott a question of our choice. “Mr Abbott, this year many of my mates will be turning 18, 19 and 20 and therefore be voting in their very first Federal Election. One thing that has been mentioned in conversation is who and what party we are going to vote for. As young Australians, we want to vote for a party who we know will ensure that we have the same opportunities that our parents and grandparents had when they grew up. Mr Abbott, what do you and your party offer us young Australians and why should we vote liberal on September 14th?” “Mr Abbott, what are your views on gay marriage?” Mr Abbott responded to our questions in great detail and we found his answers most interesting. You may have noticed some senior students wearing a darker polo shirt. These are the new Year 12 shirts organised by the Year 12 Prefects and distributed on Wednesday Week 9. Sports Day The Brighton Secondary School Sports Day was held on Friday 22nd March. Students didn’t let the overcast conditions and intermittent showers dampen their House spirit. The track was alive and bustling with House colours and the cheers from the House areas spurred competitors on down the final straight. It was a very successful day, which promoted physical activity for all, in a carnival like atmosphere. Students supported their House by participating in track, field and novelty events. There was an outstanding involvement in track events with the 100m, having six full heats in a number of year groups. The 1500m event was well supported with well over one hundred students competing in the event. The tug of war was contested competitively as ever. The highlight was the staff and House captains relay held on the 100m track as the final event of the day and the war cries provided by each House at the presentations. The House Captains did a great job of decorating House areas and rallying support and participation. Thankyou to the Physical Education staff whose skills and support in the organisation of the day helped it run seamlessly. Thanks also to the ground staff, teachers who officiated, SSO staff and the Principal team. Congratulations to all students for the way they supported the event, each other and for their participation in a great day and to Holdfast House for winning the 2013 sports day shield. YEAR

Standards Days Thankfully cooler days presented themselves after the previous weeks heatwave and we had very successful Year 8 and 9 Standards Days on Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th March.

Results by House:

The culture of maximum participation and House spirit was evident in the abundance of colour, the level of activity and the positive encouragement students gave their peers to achieve their best effort. I would like to thank the Home Group teachers and Peer Support students for their support on the day. The encouragement and skills of the Physical Education, Special Interest Volleyball and other staff who managed the events was appreciated by the students and integral in the day’s success. Our sports House Captains displayed outstanding leadership. The day could not run as smoothly without their skills of officiating, encouragement and peer coaching.

On February 20th, Brighton entered 4 individuals and 4 teams in the 2013 Schools Triathlon Championships. Congratulations to all competitors and especially Velvet Klass who was selected in the State Junior Girls Team as a result of her performance.

Special mention must go to those swimmers who achieved a ‘STANDARD‘ for their swim. This means they swam faster than the tough benchmark set for each race. This is not an easy task to achieve. Brighton received 12 STANDARDS.

Visual Arts News Term One Art The art projects explored this term are now being displayed in the art foyer and corridors. Topics include Our Symbols, Our Places – paintings inspired by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art (Year 9), Turner Water colours (Year 9), Reality Fantasy, Cubism, (Year 10 Drawing and Painting), Reality and Distortion-the Face, Hands (Year 10 ). Special congratulations to Taz Rigo, winner of the Eckersleys Encouragement Art Award, Year 12 SACE Art Show; Jasmine Crisp, exhibitor at the Year 12 SACE Art Show; Molly Warland, Brittany Clake, Jasmin Crisp, speaking and presenting at the Art Gallery of SA Year 12 Student Forum 2013.

Year 12 Art and Design Excursion The Year 12 cohort for 2013 recently visited the Helpmann Academy Exhibition and the Turner from the Tate Exhibition. At the Helpmann Exhibition the students were able to view the best works from the final graduates of the University of South Australia, the Adelaide TAFE and the Central School of Art. Particularly valuable on the day were artists’ talks given by several exhibiting artists. A visit to the Art Gallery of South Australia followed, where our students were instructed on Turner’s outstanding work and development as one of the world’s leading landscape artists. This was an inspiring day and provided the students with many ideas and opportunities for their practical Art/Design projects.

Languages and Exchanges 25th Anniversary of the SA and Bavaria/Hamburg Exchange On Wednesday 20th February a reception was held at Government House to celebrate 25 years of exchanges between students in South Australia with students from Bavaria and Hamburg in Germany. Students from Brighton Secondary School have participated in this program throughout each of the last 25 years. I am Teresa Marx an exchange student from Hamburg and I, (along with my exchange partner Jasmine Leech and teachers, Mr Smith and Ms Hearn) attended the reception and had much more fun than I expected. It all started right before the gates, of the huge posh house in the centre of Adelaide. Approximately 100 people waited on North Terrace, including the people who organised the exchange, like my German teacher Grazia Wohlgemuth, (the GermanAustralian Consultant) and South Australian organisers from Concordia College, Connie Held and Peter Stuart. The gates opened and the group walked through the impressive garden to the steps of the house. As we entered we were formally introduced to His Excellency the Governor of South Australia, Mr Kevin Scarce, and his wife who both welcomed us with a handshake. Shortly after we entered the main room and waitresses offered everyone a drink. Jasmine and I were amongst the first so we just enjoyed being at such a fancy place, watched the people all around and drank our orange juice. Then the Governor gave a brief speech. Afterwards the organizer from Bavaria delivered a speech in which he talked at some length about the wonderful opportunities that the South Australia and Bavaria/ Hamburg Exchange has given to so many students over the years. He also mentioned the many people without whom the exchange would never be possible and thanked them for their efforts. After the speeches we had some delicious finger food. We had the chance to look around the Governor’s house and many of the students present talked to the Governor and had pictures taken with him. He was very talkative. It seems the Governor was very interested about life in Germany. All in all it was a very special experience meeting the Governor and enjoying finger food in such a historic place. Teresa Marx

I focused on languages, linguistics and translation at the university and I am interested in teaching in the future. When I heard I had the opportunity to cross the globe and see how languages were taught in Australia, and get involved in this process, I just went for it! So far, this experience has been very positive. I had a great time participating to events like sports day and the French film excursion. In both cases, people were having so much fun! I am pretty confident things are going to be even more

French The Years 10, 11 and 12 French classes had a wonderful time at the 2013 French Film Festival in the city where they went to see the latest Asterix movie.

interesting as the year goes by, and that I will go back to France with very good memories and a valuable experience.” Adeline Leloutre
