From the Principal I am pleased to announce that the Department for Education and Child Development has approved our new Year 8 Think Bright Program for advertisement. Students in Year 7 who live both inside and outside the zone may apply. Application forms are being printed and will be available in the near future. The expansion project is rapidly developing. Refurbishment of the Home Economics offices, the Senior Learning Centre and Technical Studies areas has already begun which will ensure we have rooms for Fabric and Woodwork classes in the new year. The Learning Centre will probably be completed by the beginning of term 2 and the Recital Hall is due this year. We have purchased a Steinway grand piano for the Recital Hall. The “sale of the keys” will raise money for the music program in the new year. The Year 12 examinations are off-campus due to the Expansion Project. After much consideration we believe the interactivity of the iPad and the excellent educational apps makes for a highly effective teaching and learning tool. The parents of Year 8 2014 students were surveyed about purchasing an iPad for their student to use in Years 8 and 9 before being issued with an Apple Laptop in Year 10 to Year 12. 80% of the 77% of Year 8 2014 parents who answered the survey, responded in the affirmative. Hence we are moving to iPads for Year 8 in 2014. The Year 9 students in 2014 will have the laptop but in 2015, the Year 9 students will continue with the iPad.

The new uniform supplier has designed improved trousers and shorts for both boys and girls. From consultation, the Uniform Committee decided to have the same colour for girls and boys. The dark charcoal is flattering as well as providing a contrast to the striped polo and jacket. The colour of the stripe on the polo has been changed to a green to match the navy and green in the jacket and the skirt. The shirt is white with a fine green pin stripe for girls and boys. The shirt will look white at a distance and provide contrast with the trousers, jumper, jacket and blazer to accommodate student requests for a more formal look.

The Year 10 students are able to be involved in Australian Business Week in week 8 (2nd December – 6th December). Every year, students are transformed into business entrepreneurs and the students, the staff and the business mentors are always amazed at the successful transformation. I urge parents to encourage their Year 10 student to sign up. The 2013 Valedictory was an outstanding event at the Convention Centre in a larger auditorium which accommodated the students in the centre and the audience on three sides. The big screens made everyone feel close to the stage. The music performances demonstrated a variety of styles culminating in a choral medley performed by all the Year 12 music students. Congratulations to the organising team, the MCs Liam Andrews, Michaela Komarek, Nardine Shammaa and Jacob Whitelock and the Head Prefects, Lucie Soldan and Jack Newton. Sadly the following day was disappointing when some students decided to engage in reckless behaviour that endangered students and staff. The English wing had to be closed because some Year 12 students ran through depositing oil and water thus creating a dangerous environment. A staff member slipped and fell breaking three bones in her hand and a hairline fracture in her arm. The F1 in Schools National finalists (Alternate Racing team comprising Year 10 students Eleanor Pope, Emily Squires, Rhys Williams, Martin Oakley, Peter Baker-Hutton) left on 6th November to compete in the World Championships in Austin, Texas. We wish them well. The Special Interest Music Tour made up of 6 staff, 22 parents, 2 old scholars and 89 students to China and Europe will commence on 22nd November – 13th December.

SA Public Teaching Award Winner Jeffrey Kong, Head of Music at Brighton Secondary School, was a finalist in the inaugural South Australian Public Teaching Awards to honour teachers who had served the state’s students for more than 20 years. Jeffrey has taught music for 36 years at Brighton Secondary School. Congratulations.

Uniform News Important Uniform News The Governing Council approved the following changes to the school uniform at the 4th November 2013 meeting.

All Year 8 students will purchase the new uniform. Students in all other year levels must purchase new items if replacing an item which no longer fits or has worn out. Old uniform items are no longer on sale.

These recommendations were provided by the Uniform Committee after consultation with the school community.

Girls who are not currently wearing the school uniform navy trousers / shorts purchased from the school are required to purchase the new uniform charcoal coloured pants.

It was decided that: 1. Boys and girls will wear charcoal coloured trousers and shorts. The girls’ shorts / trousers will be made from stretch material to improve the fit. 2. The teal stripes on the polo shirt will be replaced with a green to match the jumper and skirt. 3. The plain green shirt will be replaced by a green and white pinstriped shirt.

The new uniform items will be available in the New Year from the on-site Uniform shop. There is a two-year phase in / out period. By the beginning of 2016 all students will wear the revised uniform. Olivia O’Neill Principal

Music News On 4th October students from the Special Interest Music program performed at the South Australian Teaching Awards ceremony held at the National Wine Centre at which Jeffrey Kong, Head of Music, was acknowledged as a finalist in the SA Public Teaching Awards The following feedback was received from Virginia Barter, Policy & Project Officer, Workforce Recognition, Department for Education and Child Development. “I wanted to pass on my thanks and congratulations to the wonderful musicians who performed so beautifully at the SA Public Teaching Awards ceremony at the National Wine Centre. As always, the calibre of the students’ performances was extremely impressive and many of the guests commented on the level of professionalism and talent, including our Master of Ceremonies, Amanda Blair. Other guests who enjoyed the musicians’ performance included the Hon Jay Weatherill MP, Premier of South Australia, Tony Harrison the Chief Executive of DECD, the Head of News of The Advertiser newspaper, presidents of the union and of several education associations, and of course all of our regional winners. The music was highly professional, appropriate and enjoyable. These musicians are a credit to their teachers, to Brighton Secondary School, and collectively to DECD. It was a real pleasure to showcase them at this prestigious event to such an esteemed audience. Once again, I extend my congratulations to the musicians for both their excellent musicianship and their professional attitude. I would also like to thank you for coordinating their attendance and performance at the event, as well as nurturing their musical talents.”

Government House Visit On the 19th September, Jack Newton and I were fortunate enough to attend the reception at Government House for school leaders where we met with His Excellency Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce, the Governor of South Australia, and his wife Elizabeth Anne Taylor. Upon arrival we were given refreshments, and had the valuable opportunity to talk to other school leaders about the progress they had made in the year in their roles as school leaders. His Excellency Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce began the evening by telling us about how he became Governor and what his role as Governor involved. He spoke to us about the role of being a leader, and what a privilege it was for us to represent our school as leaders. Despite the large number of student leaders that attended from both the public, private and independent school sectors, the Governor spoke individually to each of us throughout the evening. It was a great privilege to have been invited to Government House, and both Jack and myself very much enjoyed the experience. It will undoubtedly provide us both with new ideas and inspiration to become better leaders to represent Brighton Secondary School. Lucie Soldan Head Prefect

Queen’s Scout Recipient Jake Grant The Queen’s Scout Award is the highest youth award in the Scouting movement and has outstanding status within Scouting and the Community. The activities and requirements to achieve this award are inspiring and challenging. Jake Grant has completed all aspects required to achieve this award, in the fields of Leadership, Outdoor Activities, Personal Growth and Community Involvement. A Queen’s Scout takes, on average, three years to complete and has 17 individual requirements. Just 2% of eligible Scouts achieve the Award, with an average of 15 presented each year in South Australia. Jake is the second Brighton Secondary School Year 12 student who has achieved this award this year. In the leadership component Jake was a team member of the F1 World Championship in Abu Dhabi, representing Australia and has done Geocaching in Canada and Australia. For the outdoors component Jake assisted with the Monarto Zoo re-vegetation program.

Jake’s community involvement was assisting a Cub troop (7-10 year olds) for an extended period, and he had developed his own skills and knowledge through stage performances at BSS and St Phillips, helping at the church with serving and working bees, learning about banking and financial institutions, improving his swimming ability and learning how to prepare for and conduct a job interview with industry. Jake’s achievements are outstanding and reflect his dedication, perseverance, skills, knowledge and leadership within the community. Congratulations.

Year 12 Drama Production Much Ado About Nothing Toward the end of Term 3 our Year 12 Drama class presented their group production of William Shakespeareâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Much Ado About Nothing. In true Shakespearean style, Much Ado reveals the truth of the story before it really begins. In short, as the title implies, the audiences witnessed a whole lot of comical fuss, which amounted to very little in the end. Like any good romantic comedy, the ingredients of which we are all familiar, eventually, after hurdling a myriad of obstacles our key guys and gals discovered what is most important â&#x20AC;&#x201C; true love. In our production we aimed to bring our audience into the comedy and revelry of the play. We performed to extremely strong and supportive audiences, receiving so much positive feedback. The Year 12s truly rose to the challenge of interpreting Shakespeare and bringing it to life on a contemporary stage.

Visual Arts News Adventures in Stone Carving with Wayan Dudug, Balinese artist. This term students from years eight to ten are working on an exciting project with artist-inresidence, Dudug. The students have developed designs linking sustainability, culture and their own individual art ideas. The relief sculptures are now underway and Dudug has demonstrated traditional Balinese carving techniques that the students are now using. The Hebel stone is a soft stone that is easy to chisel and carve.

Dudug is also completing a large sculptural work for the school during his residency. He has held many exhibitions in Australia with his paintings and sculptures that reflect close connections to his Balinese traditions and heritage. The students have thoroughly enjoyed the experience of Balinese stone carving this term and the opportunity to learn and work with an experienced artist. Yasmin Paterson, Coordinator Visual Arts

Sports News Boys Year 8/9 Knock Out Badminton The Year 8/9 boys badminton team played against Glenunga and Parafield Gardens recently. Our boys represented Brighton very well, demonstrating excellent sportsmanship and endeavour in their games. Glenunga brought a very strong team and advanced through to the finals. We competed very well against Parafield Gardens, with both schools finishing with 4 rubbers. Parafield won on a count back of games, winning 9 games to 8.

Year 10 Self Defence SIV Earlier this term the Year 10 SIV boys and girls classes had an instructor come to the school for two double lessons for Self Defence classes. Topics covered included avoiding conflict, negotiation, self protection and defence techniques.

Science News A group of year 9 students recently attended a talk by Professor Ian Frazer, the co developer of the HPV vaccine. Students are with Professor Frazer at the talk, which was held at the RiAus in the city.

The group photo is from a Rotary Club of Brighton meeting where Emily Squires talked to members about her time at the Science Experience. Spencer Olds and Michelle Lennon talked about their time on the National Youth Science Forum, which was held in Canberra in January. Lynne Pullman is also shown. Thanks to Brighton Rotary for their sponsorship of the students.

Congratulations to Phoebe Chilman who has been successful in gaining a place in the National Youth Science Forum in January 2014. Phoebe is with her parents and Lynne Pullman, representing Brighton Rotary Club who has sponsored Phoebe.

Outdoor Pursuits Aquatics Excursion On Wednesday 18th and Thursday 19th September the Outdoor Pursuits class travelled to Port Noarlunga on excursion to surf and kayak. The Wednesday was a blustery day, with the group experiencing all four seasons as we learnt our kayaking skills on the Onkaparinga River. In the afternoon we went on a long paddle, training for the group work and safety that will be required on camp next term. We paddled into the 25 knott south-westerly wind, against the tide down to the mouth of the Onkaparinga River. By staying close to the leeward shore, we were able to reduce the effect of the wind and the current, which helped us make good progress. The group was very encouraging with one another and demonstrated good leadership as opportunities were presented. The tide was rushing in at the mouth of the river and some of the group seized the opportunity to learn some basic white water kayaking manoeuvres of ferry gliding and turns in the moving water, as well as catching some waves which was exciting. On Thursday the wind changed around to a north westerly and was lighter in the morning, however it soon picked up and formed white caps on the ocean. The group encouraged and motivated each other and stayed out in the waves all day. Taylah had the ride of the day from right out the back and Kelsey had the stack of the day onto the sand. There was lots of laughter and some good surfing. Every group member made the most of the conditions and the instructors helped to develop their skills. It was encouraging to see how well the group bonded and supported each other during this experience. We are looking forward to further developing our organisation, group work and self reliance on our future canoeing expedition. Outdoor Pursuits Class

Minda Dunes As a component of our environmental sustainability studies in Outdoor Pursuits, we have teamed up with the Holdfast Bay Council to help care for a section of the Minda sand dunes. On Friday 13th we met Mike Hemus the Coast and Biodiversity Officer for the Council, near the Somerton Surf Lifesaving club. After collecting a pair of gloves and a trowel each, our group carried some jerry cans of water and boxes of plant seedlings along the beach to the dunes. We took great care not to step on any of the existing plants in the dunes, as we settled in to plant the new seedlings. Mike demonstrated the best technique for planting the indigenous seedlings in sand, in order for them to have the greatest chance of survival. He distributed plants including native pigface, knobby club rush, sweet apple-berry, native pelargonium, running postman, sea-berry bush, and coastal saltbush in accordance with the best aspect for growth. In doing so he considered how much direct sunlight each would get, exposure to the salty wind and amount of water required. Mike explained the important role these plants play in preventing erosion of the sand dunes. We were careful to wear our gloves and have covered footwear, which was good because as we began to dig holes for our plants we found a number of broken glass bottles that thoughtless individuals had discarded. Each Friday we return to our area of the Minda dunes to remove invasive exotic weeds and check on the health of our plants.

Sunday Market Jumping Castle Sunday Market 8th December 2013 The Special Interest Volleyball (SIV) Parent Committee plan to run a Jumping Castle at the BSS Sunday Market on the 8th Dec. This will be supported by volleyball students offering face painting, coloured hair spray and nail polishing, to raise funds for the SIV Program. They will have staff in attendance, who can offer a suburb report in exchange for a gold coin donation and free property advice.

Working direct with Hollywood Actors, Industry Professionals and the State’s leading Casting Agency, this 5 Day Program is a must for all aspiring Young Actors wanting to further their education in screen acting and performance craft. Throughout this program, students will expand skills from the bottom up. Starting from the foundations of acting working right the way through to developing some of the most sophisticated acting techniques employed by professional Actors working in Hollywood today. This fun syllabus is our most comprehensive program for teens yet and includes everything from Voice, Movement, Improvisation, The Body, Circus Skills, Characterization, Script Breakdown and Analysis, TV Presenting, Auditioning Skills & Acting for Screen - just to name a few! Students will also receive 2 x days of exclusive training from LA-based actor, and ex-Neighbours star, Sam Clark; who will be joining our coaching team, sharing his invaluable knowledge with those wanting to follow in his footsteps. Brighton Performing Arts Centre FRINGE Performance Information 2014

FRINGE 2014: I am very excited to be working with Becky Blake, lead female vocalist for “Chunky Custard” and Ex Student and Old scholar of Brighton Secondary School, to put the Brighton Performing Arts Centre on the map for 2014 Adelaide FRINGE. We have the BPAC booked with acts performing every weekend of the month. This includes: Lift Dance, Reverb Theatre, Holdfast Bay Concert Band, Circo-‐Bats, Hyper-‐Dance and Wobbles the Clown. Our main focus though is on one weekend at the end of February to bring the Fringe to Brighton in a big and exciting way! Our vision for the weekend is to turn the centre into a community hub with a coffee shop, refreshments, book and nd activity zone in the foyer and family activities in the surrounding outside areas, utilizing local businesses. Family Fun Day on Sunday 2 March will hopefully also include displays from Volleyball SA and Surf Lifesaving on the beach courts area adjacent, a bouncy castle, bungee trampoline, face painters and remote control cars. There will also be a sausage sizzle and drink vans. The BPAC foyer will be transformed into a café space and coffee shop. The Brighton Library will have a display space and reading area complete with armchairs and beanbags etc. For the evening shows, a licensed area will provide drinks and light snacks. There will be complimentary live entertainment between performances after 5pm on the Friday and on the Saturday afternoon and evening to encourage patrons to linger and enjoy the atmosphere. We have Holdfast Bay Council support to help promote the weekend. Our aim is to get the word out about the facilities available to the general public at BPAC, so we can stage regular festival events at the centre. This will also let the local community and public know that they can utilise the space for their own events. Please contact Ben Phillips at the school if you would like to help or be involved.

We play a wide range of music and perform about 12 times a year We also have a TRAINING BAND for people of all ages to learn to play in band or for those who have taken up a new instrument
