The desig n o f the family dw e l l i n g r e vol ve s aro und the study o f Rak u go, a tr a di ti on a l Japanese sto r ytelling te c h n i qu e th a t th e g randfather perfo rms. T h e a n a l ys i s of a musical instrument that th e gr a n df a th e r plays as a part o f his pe r f or ma n c e , a shamisen, revealed a jo i n e r y c on di ti on i n its co nstructio n. This tr a n s l a te s to th e idea o f a ho me with diffe r e n t a r e a s th a t sho uld co nnect spatially i n a w a y th a t allo ws individual to purs u e th e i r ow n interest but so meho w sti l l ma i n ta i n c on nectio ns to each o ther a s th e i r a c ti vi ti e s o verlap.

Over the past cen tu r y, th e Bedfo rd Branch o f the B r ook l yn Pu bl i c Librar y has underg o ne n u me r ou s alteratio ns and resto rati on s . T h e f a c t that the existing librar y doe s n ot h a ve clear distinctio ns betwe e n pr ogr a m a r e a s prevents teens fro m feel i n g c omf or ta bl e witho ut a space o f their ow n . T h i s inspired the idea o f brin gi n g ba c k a sense o f bo undaries to pr ovi de pr i va c y by creating a variety o f s h e l te r e d s pa c e s so they can feel a sens e of pl a c e a n d security.

This co ntrasting i de n ti ty c a n be reso lved thro ug h the ide a of bl e n di n g P rada into the existing POPS. Pr a da pro g rams are co ncealed f r om pu bl i c ’s sig hts, camo uflag ing the m w i th i n a n d a s the structural elements of th e pr opos e d desig ned space. This is i n te n de d to manipulate public’s min ds r e ga r di n g th e existence o f hierachy wi th i n th e s pa c e as P rada emerg es. The pro duct o f co mplete ge ome tr y a n d o ffset layering are imple me n te d on a n existing rule kno wn as ‘ pu n n e t s pu a r e ’ , in which resulted in a spe c i f i c s pa ti a l o rg anizatio n. It perceive s va r i ou s de pth s that leads to the idea of ge n e r a ti n g a no tio n o f co nstant g ro w th th r ou gh ou t th e who le space. The three di f f e r e n t l e ve l s are pro po rtio nally divided th r ou gh th e actio n o f o ffsetting a su r f a c e pl a n e i n a co nstant sequence, wh i c h r e pr e s e n t the three Ho using Wo rk s ’ mi s s i on s th a t co mplete o ne ano ther. The characteristic o f the desig n was initially inspired by Bj a r k e I n ge l ’s 8 Ho use o n ho w he experimented with a lo t o f sharp ange l s a n d bol d l i n e s . The framewo rk fulfills this bulky characteristic to expo se the r a w qu a l i ty of th e so lidwo o d as a pro tective layer o f the exterio r. The desig n ge ts mor e e l e ga n t and so fter to wards the interio r as it g ets clo ser to the use r. T h i s i s a c h i e vd thro ug h the tapered fro nt leg s, co mpressed thin plywood th a t f ol l ow s th e cur vature o f o ne’s bo tto m, and flexibility achieved by the ba c k r e s t w i th th e use of th i n pl yw ood.
