2016: MAKE IT YOURS!
As 2015 winds down, there’s only one thing on our minds: F.U.N. With long summer nights in our sights, we want to turn up the volume in this issue and celebrate everything creatively colourful. We want our days vividly vibrant like the works of Amanda Hernandez, Emily Delphine and many more. We want to shred it up like Danielle Robertson, giggle with Brii Wright and be inspired by Alexandra Phillips. We want to be a boss girl like our cover gal Silvana. We want to create art with watercolour brushes like Monika Viktoria and art with makeup brushes like Tara Florence. We want to get dressed in Irréversible’s designer clothing and celebrate the new year like a Jessica Bratich woman. We want sun, surf, inspirational babes and a load of creativity. Want to join us? Just keep turning the pages...

I
nspired by modern textures and metal hardware, Jessica Bratich’s eponymous handbag and accessories label have been featured on runways on Australian soil as well as internationally in New York. Hailing from Perth, Western Australia, the self taught designer mixes minimalist chic with bold statement designs to create her signature looks which have been praised and worn by celebrities, models and bloggers worldwide. Tell us about yourself I’m a mother to a beautiful three year old girl, and am blessed to have another little one on the way! Before I began my accessories label, I competed in karate for 22 years and won a bronze medal in the 2006 world championships. I’ll be keen to get back into fitness once my children are a little older. I also have a Communications Degree, with a Minor in Marketing. How did you come about creating your own handbag label? My interest in fashion came from working in retail and wholesale before studying at TAFE. Around four years ago I decided to start designing my own bags as I could never find exactly what I wanted in the market place. I was

constantly looking for the perfect bag to suit my lifestyle and taste, but couldn’t find anything. So I did it myself! I’m self taught, and I’ve made many mistakes along the way, but the label is doing great now; I have very reliable factories and a strong PR team behind me. How would you describe the Jessica Bratich style? The label’s overall style is minimalist chic. The bags and jewellery are statement pieces, but in a very understated way. Bloggers and off duty models have taken to the last collection in a big way, so the style is obviously very appealing to that effortlessly cool crowd. Who or what inspires you? Anything and everything!! But mostly I’m inspired by the amazing people in my life. Lead us through your process from coming up with an idea to creating it. Ideas come to me randomly from day to day, so I’m constantly making notes on new designs. I then make a time to draw out all of the ideas from my notes. Usually I will leave the sketches for a little while, and then revisit them to edit what I want to include in the collection. I select materials from swatches which have been sent to me, before finalising my trade sketches and sending off the collection for sampling. From here I work back and forth with my factory until I’m happy with everything, and then it’s time to shoot the look book and campaign as well as begin the production. ► 11

What’s the most treasured piece that you have designed? I have a favourite piece each season, and I tend to like each collection better than the last because I’m evolving as a designer. My favourite pieces in this collection are the Angeline Backpack (that seems to be a favourite amongst many people!) as well as the Natasha fold over clutch purely because of it’s simplicity. How would you describe the Jessica Bratich woman? The Jessica Bratich women has many different attitudes and aspects to her life. Sometimes she’s in work mode, party mode, best friend mode and so forth. And with each mode, brings a different need for a different style of bag. We do regular social media shoots to depict the varying style and personality of the Jessica Bratich Woman, previously we’ve shot the #JBCareerWoman which featured our laptop bag and large totes, and then there was the 12 • Stell Magazine
#JBPartyGirl shoot which included a range of our clutches. So in a sense, you could say the Jessica Bratich woman can’t be described in just one way - but one thing for sure is she’s a lot of fun! What has been some of your greatest accomplishments? Mel Brown, a.k.a Scary Spice, has worn two of my clutches and even made comment to the press that she liked them for being different. Also, showing on the runway at New York Fashion Palette alongside another designer, as well as being a part of the Telstra Perth Fashion Festival. I was also a finalist for the Western Australian Designer of The Year a few years ago, which was pretty amazing. --www.jessicabratich.com

What does balance mean to you? I believe balance is the harmonisation of every aspect of your lifestyle. This includes study, exercise, diet, work, relaxation and everything that makes up your day-to-day routine. I believe that balance is the one of the most crucial components of a happy and successful life. This doesn’t necessarily mean your time has to be divided equally but it is important to distribute your time mindfully.
H
ailing from the Gold Coast, Danielle’s healthy fitness philosophy teamed with her million dollar smile have helped her amass a following of over 500,000 on Instagram. The beauty with brains (she’s a third year law student and has just recenly completed her Bachelor of Justice), Danielle endeavours to maintain a healty and fit lifestyle. Balance and being the best you can be is key. Where did your love for fitness begin? I have been involved in sport from a very young age; netball, athletics, touch football… I even gave waterpolo a go! [laughs] I loved it all, so naturally my love for health and fitness developed and extended into adulthood. Growing up with athletics being such a large part of my life it only stood to reason that eating well and exercising became a part of who I am today. What’s your best tip for finding consistency with workouts? Be organised! I like to plan out my week and work in my exercise as a part of my every day routine. I find that early morning exercise works best for me. It’s a great way to start the day and once it’s done, you are left with a sense of achievement and can continue the day on a positive note.
How do you stay motivated? I believe that health and fitness is a lifestyle choice. In saying this, I find motivation in the simplest of things, even just a quote. Inspirational words get me moving! Personally I need to have a healthy body and mind to be able to study, work and manage my lifestyle. This is what keeps me motivated; I want to keep the balance.
“Never doubt your ability” What do you like to indulge in? I’m a major foodie but I’d have to say my sweet tooth rules when it comes to indulgences so chocolate and cake… or chocolate cake, the best of both worlds!
my ability to study law. In the pursuit of my goals, I have managed to defy several discouraging opinions and adopt one powerful piece of advice: “Never doubt your ability.” I now face improbable situations with the mindset that if I want to succeed, I can make it happen. I don’t doubt my ability and I urge others to believe in themselves too, this is the best piece of advice I’ve ever been given. With such a large following (congrats by the way!), what would you say is the main message you want to convey to your audience? Thank you! I’m so grateful to have such a supportive following on social media. I’ve been asked many times for health and fitness advice and I am currently working towards obtaining my fitness certificates. This demand has motivated me to gain the necessary qualifications in order to help those who have reached out to me. I want to my audience to be inspired to be the best they can be at every stage of their life. I want to promote a balanced lifestyle and show others that you don’t have to sacrifice one goal for another, you can do it all, but nothing worth having comes easy. I want to inspire, lead by example and help others achieve their goals. ----@dannibelle
What’s the best advice that any one has given you? My achievements, whether they be sporting or academic, are a result of hard work and determination rather than pure natural ability. When I competed in athletics, I wasn’t a star like my counterparts; I just worked hard and trained hard to stay in the game and reach my goals. In this sense, I competed with myself, not others. When I was in high school, I was advised by the guidance counselor to pursue a different career path as they doubted 15

resh faced and exotically alluring, Alexandra is now living the L.A. life after beating 6000 other applications worldwide to win the Hollywood Immersive contest. Born in Hong Kong, raised in Indonesia and grown up in Sydney, the Filipino, Spanish and Australian beauty is best known for her roles in TV Series Syd2030 and most recently, House of Hancock which stars alongside Sam Neil. Oh, and she can totally kick ass. For real. What do you love about acting? I love discovering new aspects of myself - every character I do is a version of myself. So when you learn the craft of acting, you’re simultaneously on a journey of learning about yourself; I find that very interesting. How did you get into acting? At first I was a commercial

model. My mother was a model back in Asia so it was a natural path for me to take. I eventually started booking a lot more TVCs and then was requested to audition for feature films. My first ever audition was for a blockbuster film Gods of Egypt with a $140 million production budget. I had a few auditions and was put on hold for two weeks. The positive feedback was a great confidence booster and pushed me to get an acting agent. What was the transition like moving from model to actress? It was pretty easy actually. I discovered acting by doing TVCs. But I actually had a passion for post production editing and went to Macquarie University to study it. I then discovered screenwriting and acting at University at the same time I was going for TVCs. So it was a combined effort I feel but I was always drawn to film.
the set and acting feel more authentic. Congratulations on winning the 2015 Starnow Hollywood Immersive Acting Program! How has the L.A experience been for you? I’ve only been here for a few weeks but it’s been great having representation meetings, auditions and acting class. There’s a creative buzz. What would you say are the major difference between the industries in Australia and the U.S? The biggest difference is purely the existence of the film industry to be honest. The conversation is always being had about a show in progress, an audition, a script etc.
You’ve built up an extensive CV with credits in films, TVCs, music videos. What would be the ultimate acting job? The ultimate acting job would be a tv series or film in the adventure/action genre. I do martial arts Krav Maga so I would love to combine my passions. How did you get into Krav Maga? Is it hard to master? I’ve been doing Krav Maga at VT1 Academy. It does take alot of dedication and bruises! I’ve just started Muay Thai as well so we will see how that goes. You played a role in the telemovie House of Hancock, starring alongside superstar Sam Neil. Did you get starstrucked? Yes of course, I’m a Jurassic Park baby! But I was more excited to meet him than nervous. What was the experience acting in that like? It was amazing. Since it was based on a true story there was a lot more research and specifics involved which made
Everyone here is quite ambitious, creative and supportive. I find in Australia it’s just not as present. Do you have any plans on staying in L.A? Yes, I plan on doing pilot season at the least. Who are your favourite actors who inspire you? Zoe Saldana, Leonardo Dicaprio, Eddie Redmayne and Meryl Streep. They are all completely different from each other and at different stages in their career but they all I believe have honesty in their acting. ----@allexphillips 17

BRII WRIGHT, 19 - Makeup Artist / Youtuber

you could find me in a deep conversation about anything really.
B
efore starting her career as a makeup artist, Brii Wright was getting her clothes dirty growing up as a rebellious tomboy, being the youngest of 5 children - 3 of them being boys. Now she finds beauty and makeup exhilarating and a way to express her creativeness. Where did your passion for makeup originate? My passion for it hasn’t always been there. I was a bit of a tomboy when I was younger and as I grew older I got really into girly stuff - as most of us girls do! I think what made me get so interested in it is the confidence it brought me and how creative I could be with it! It’s just SO much fun... I could wear one plain outfit for the rest of my life, as long as I could change up my makeup everyday! Other then makeup, what else are you passionate about? I’m very passionate about performing arts and music: dancing, singing, musical theatre, voice acting. I also love movies. I still go to $1 weekly blockbuster Thursday’s. I love fitness and being active; one of my hobbies is pole dancing too. I am a really passionate person,
Your Youtube videos are so entertaining. What made you want to start a Youtube channel? I’m so glad they are entertaining! I have always loved YouTube, I look up to so many Youtubers... Way more than any celebrities or models or singers. They are so much more real, you watch YouTube videos at home in bed. You create this relationship with them and they feel like someone you can really trust and listen to, whenever you want! I always felt so confident and happy watching YouTube videos. I wanted to be able to share my life and creativity with the world too. I love how I can connect with so many people around the world on such a personal level. I think that’s why I wanted to do it so much. Did you have an artistic background growing up? Oh yes! I’ve always said the left side of my brain doesn’t function too well (the science and mathematical sort of side haha). I played lots of instruments, was involved in dance groups and choirs and musicals. I studied drama, Italian and art.. You name it. The right side of my brain is very switched on I think!! I feel as though I definitely excelled in the artistic subjects and activities. As a makeup artist, you must be ahead of the curb when it comes to spring-summer beauty trends. What are some of your favourite looks for the season? Summer is my favourite season! I am all about a luminous, bronzed, healthy, natural look. Anything really dewy and golden. I love the naked eye look too - very

minimal eye makeup, no mascara, basic eyeshadow. I love a look focussed on skin for summer! I also can’t pass up big fluffy lashes and a glossy coral or nude lip! What is your beauty philosophy? 1. Take care of your skin and learn how to prep it correctly before applying makeup - It’s so important and so many people forget that your skin is what the makeup sits on! Your makeup will look better, feel better and last better with a plump and hydrated base! 2. Less is more - I mean this with everything. It’s that simple.
What advice would you give to other women who would like to pursue a career in makeup? Just go for it! The only things you need to remember is experience and experiment. Practice makes perfect. There are no rules in makeup, It’s about how creative you can be and how you want to express yourself. Also, money doesn’t matter. Expensive makeup does not always necessarily mean it’s better. I think if you want to work with makeup, you need to be willing to take some risks! And for the single most important question... what is the beauty product that every woman cannot leave home without? That’s a toughie because everyone is different! But for me, it’s highlighter. If I ain’t glowin’ I ain’t goin’. ----@briiwright_ 19

A
fter winning a modeling competition in the late 90’s, the Romanian born, Melbourne raised, and San Diego based exotic goddess has been dominating the fashion industry ever since. With a list of runways and international magazines under her belt, Silvana has shot with some of the biggest names in Australia including Sass & Bide, Lisa Ho, Alanah Hill; as well as prestigious international labels ranging from Oscar Del La Renta to Versace and Chanel. As an actress, she has appeared in films such as The Muppets Most Wanted, The Beast and had a role in US series Wilfred and more recently, she has moved into the entrepreneurial side with her husband (Australia’s greatest tennis player Mark Philippoussis), designing the women’s range for hubby’s Phlip Apparel’s SS16 collection. Yet the creativity doesn’t just end there! Since she can remember, Silvana has always had a love for painting; so it was obvious that she teamed up with her talented best friend, model turned photographer, Rosanna Faraci for a photoillustration collaboration. With a passion for creating things out of the box, Silvana and Rosanna are an artist duo to beat as rave responses to their collaborations are flying in left, right and center. Hoping to inspire and empower women, their next collaborations are currently in negotiations with several labels, including an exclusive, one off photoshoot for large canvas with Silvana’s incredible painting complimenting it. Silvana has certainly seemed to do it all while juggling and maintaining an ever growing career as a model, actress, painter, designer, and did we mention she’s also a newly first time mother? ‘Busy’ would be a major understatement for this talented young lady. We had to have a chat with the multi-talented wonder woman about her passions and inspirations so luckily, Silvana somehow found the time to fit in her busy schedule a Q&A with us. 22 • Stell Magazine
You’re a model, actress, artist and mother. Is there anything you can’t do?! Sing, dive, swim with sharks…ha! How do you juggle motherhood on top of your incredible career? I’ve been blessed with a wonderful career so far and am so grateful to be where I am right now. I’m fortunate enough to be in the position to choose the projects and jobs I now do, which is a luxury and definitely not something I take for granted. The time I spend away from Nicholas [son] and my husband is very precious. I also believe that a great support system is crucial when juggling full time mummy duties as well as a career. I’m blessed with an amazingly supportive family and friends to help me achieve my goals. How did you get into modelling? I got into modeling after my mother entered me into a modelling contest when I was 16 and I won. I was always a tom boy growing up and mum thought she’d try and get me to see a more feminine side. I guess it worked! What would you say was your big break in your modelling career? Traveling to New York and shooting a campaign with Oscar Del La Renta within a week of landing there was definitely a game changer for me I think. A week later, I scored an international campaign for Wella and booked quite a few shows during NYFW. And you were also the face of Stonnington Spring Fashion Runway last year. I’m so thankful to The City of Stonnington and good friend Valentina Jovanoska for appointing me as the “Face Of Stonnington Fashion Runway” last year. I loved working with the whole team and had a blast being back on the runway again. What are some of your favourite fashion campaigns you’ve done so far? Some of my favorite campaigns to date include: Oscar Del La Renta, Wella International, Pantene, Crown Casino, J’Aton Couture, Highpoint Shopping Centre, Face of iSelect Fashion Aid, Wrangler, Elwood and being the face of L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival. There’s just so many memorable moments! ►

----------------------Who is your beauty icon? My beauty icon is Elle McPherson. I love her laid-back, bohemian style and love her natural beach look... and that smile!!
On top of modeling, you’re also an artist being very passionate about painting. How long have you had this passion for? Since I can remember! I got my first aisle when I was 6 years old and haven’t stopped painting since! I’ve always had a passion for art and love anything artistic related: from painting to acting to fashion and design. Where do you find your inspiration from for your paintings? My main inspiration is family, love & travel adventures. My family give me the strength I need to power through each day and strive for my personal best. I love making them proud. Love is the basis of everything I do and where I get my main inspiration from for my paintings. What types of materials do you like to use? I’ve studied all forms of art mediums but my absolute favorite is oils on canvas. Can you describe what it feels like when you’re painting? Painting takes me into a heightened place of relaxation and happiness almost into a dream state. I love nothing more than listening to music and dancing around my studio whilst painting. I’m in heaven How did you come up with the concept for this collaborative denim on denim shoot with Rosanna Faraci? I’ve always loved the aesthetic of denim on denim and wanted to create a beautiful story of looks featuring some of my favorite denim brands that I’ve had the pleasure of working with during the course of my career. I reached out to my talented team and friends and the rest is history. Love having more of a creative input into my work these days.
“Love is the basis of everything I do and where I get my inspiration from”
How did you meet her? Rosie and I met during a fashion show for J’Aton Couture way back when they were just emerging designers however, it was only 10 years later that we got re-connected again and struck up a friendship.
Was it easy collaborating and mixing in your paintings with Rosanna’s photography? I’ve always loved shooting with Rosie. She really does bring out the best in me and feel that her experience as a model helps with this. Not only is she gorgeous on the outside but her personality really shines and lights up the studio in which she works in. I loved mixing my creative talents in with hers and found myself staying up all night getting lost in her photographs. We hear you are set to present your first art exhibition. I’m currently working on a couple of projects including my first art exhibition. Many late, late nights have gone into preparing for them and am so excited to finally share all my hard work with everyone. You’ve also filmed a role in Muppets Most Wanted. How did you get into acting? I started acting when I first got into modeling as a suggestion from my agent. I was quite shy and acting helped boost my confidence levels. I’ve done classes with Ivana Chubbuck, N.I.D.A and recently completed an intensive course with Margie Haber through Hollywood Immersive in Los Angeles which lead to roles in the latest Muppets Movie and Wilfred the U.S TV series as well as US based TVC’s. What do you love most about acting? The beautiful thing about acting is the ability to explore different types of characters. It’s another one of my creative outlets. What’s something about you that surprises people? That I can be a tough cookie. I might be softly spoken and seem “too nice” but when push comes to shove, don’t mistake my kindness for weakness! What’s it like being married to one of Australia’s greatest tennis players? Mark is an amazing husband and father to our son, Nicholas. He’s a great son, brother and friend. I’m so proud of him in more ways than one! He inspires me daily. ► 25
---------------------How did you meet him? We met in LA through mutual friends. There was an instant connection and we’ve been inseparable ever since. Was it love at first sight? You could say it was love at first sight. I definitely believe in it.
“There really is no place like Australia. ”
You welcomed your first child, Nicholas last year How has starting your family changed your perception and meaning of life and love? Being a parent is a blessing. Family has always been number one for both Mark and I and we’re so happy to have been blessed with our own. Nicholas is the most beautiful little soul and adds so much more value to our lives. Every day is amazing. Life now revolves around him as he’s our number one priority. You and Mark both have a passion for fashion with the success of Phlip Apparel both here and in the U.S. What’s the experience like co-ordinating this in your already busy schedule? Between Mark’s already busy tennis / training / Phlip Apparel schedule and my full time mummy / artist/ designer / model schedule, life can sometimes get a little overwhelming. But due to our love and passion for Phlip [clothing line] things somehow all fall into place. I guess when you love what you do… What’s next in stores with Phlip Apparel? We’re currently working on our A/W 16 collection to be released early next year. We’re excited to re-launch the brand and it includes our new women’s line which I’ve designed. I love working alongside Mark and can’t wait to share what we’ve been working on! What’s the biggest challenge with living two leading lives between Australia and the U.S? I think the biggest challenge we’ve faced with living between Australia and the U.S would be settling Nicholas into a “normal” routine. We travel back and forth quite a bit throughout the year and getting Nicholas into a routine gets tricky especially with jet lag. And you’ll be back home in Australia for Christmas! I’m super excited to be back home for Christmas and to celebrate the New Year with our loved ones. There really is no place like Australia. 26 • Stell Magazine
Do you have any more collaborations with Rosanna soon? I’m excited to announce we have another collaboration coming out in March 2016. The response we’ve received has been amazing. We’re just so grateful that we’ve been given the opportunity to not only collaborate with each other but with some great brands including Stell Magazine. We’re simply just enjoying ourselves and loving what we’re doing creative wise. Hope everyone else digs it too! ■

IRRÉVERSIBLE
Designer vintage shopping on a whole ‘nother level 33
fashion
W
elcome to the holy grail of vintage fashion finds, where the likes of Versace, Fendi, Gaultier and one of the largest vintage Moschino collections are sourced and stockpiled to create a one stop vintage shop. Founded in 2013 as an eBay store, IRVRSBL is establishing itself as a internatonal hub for vintage shopping; boasting a wild collection of archaic one-off, statement designer garments. Specialising in the more crazy collectible, rare items including a Gianni Versace velvet jacket owned by the Met Museum and a Mugler rainbow jacket from the Kyoto Costume Institute’s collection takes IRVRSBL on a whole ‘nother level of online vintage shopping. With a refined eye and love for bold, incredible prints, curator Clare Ferra is unapologetic when it comes to throwing it back to the ambitious era when designer clothing pushed boundaries. We talk to the vintage lover about her colourfully curated e-shop. 34 • Stell Magazine
Tell us a bit about yourself Ferra: I run IRVRSBL, which is a designer vintage store. Prior to that I was a video editor, and prior to that I went to art school. Even though I don’t have any experience in the worlds of business or fashion, opening the store was quite a natural progression for me because I try to take a more curatorial approach to running the store. We prioritise having an aesthetically driven store over what’s practical and our bottom dollar. It seems counter intuitive but it’s what works best for us! IRVRSBL is unique for its quirky collections At IRVRSBL, we specialise in rare, designer vintage. We specialise in pieces by designer greats from the 80’s and 90’s, such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Thierry Mugler, Gianni Versace and Franco Moschino. We have a very specific aesthetic - it’s a bit Ab Fab, a bit 90’s supermodel, with some avant garde designs thrown in for good mix. Think lots of logos, colour and incredible prints. How did you come up with this concept? I’ve been collecting vintage since my early teens. At that time it wasn’t such a done thing, so op
shops weren’t picked clean like they are today. As time went on my tastes increasingly discerning, and I found myself forking out most of my hard earned dough on designer pieces. Buying rare vintage is like doing crack and I’m still addicted to the thrill of the find. After fine tuning my skills for so long I realised I had quite the knack for it, and it would be a great idea to capitalise on. The concept was to make a vintage store solely based

on the most incredible, rarest and unattainable pieces. Rather than have a ‘bygone era’ look and feel, we aim to be more fashion-forward. What do you look for in particular when curating products for your e-shop? The process is quite intuitive but there are some things I always look for. I am always on the lookout for pieces that are iconic to that year or collection. For instance we just acquired a Chanel bra suit from S/S 1994 which was a key piece. It was worn in several colourways on the runway and was worn by Linda Evangelista in the campaign images. Generally I look for pieces that have a sense of novelty or something really interesting about it. I’m looking for the crazier and more collectible pieces, rather than a classic black dress or pair of tailored pants. Who or what inspires you? Loads of things! I take inspiration from photography, art, design and music. Right now I’m loving mid 90’s Chanel, Irving Penn’s campaign images for Issey Miyake, Memphis design and 90’s supermodel Yasmeen Ghauri. ► 35
What’s your favourite pieces that you’ve found? It changes often since I’m constantly buying more. But right now I’d have to say it is a Gianni Versace S/S 1991 Warhol print skirt suit, and the matching long sleeved dress which I just purchased recently. The same suit was actually owned by Elizabeth Taylor and auctioned off at her estate sale a while back. 36 • Stell Magazine
What’s next for IRVRSBL? Expect a lot more museum pieces, as we’ll be going in that direction more in the future. More vintage Chanel too. We’re collaborating with some incredibly talented people too which is quite exciting. ■ www.irvrsbl.com

What would you say is your professional philosophy for your business? I have a passion for buying new makeup products for my clients or my kit and love to research to make sure I’m up to date with all new products and techniques. I keep my professional development current by attending as many masterclasses I can. You name it, I have it, and if you want an honest opinion on the product, I will give it to you. I don’t believe in beating around the bush and I won’t say I like a product unless I have tested and can genuinely recommend it. I’m fun-loving but when it comes to the running and customer service side of my business, I’m very serious. I love assisting my clients and want to give them the best experience they can have. Where did your passion for makeup originate? I’ve always had a love for makeup and enjoyed experimenting with my Mum’s and friend’s products. My academic background gave me a chance to interact with business and I began to think that my dream of pursuing a career in makeup could be more than a hobby. I also travelled overseas on a gap year and experienced an independence I enjoyed and realised that I could use this and my passion to do makeup as a profession and not just a fun experience making up my friends and family. Did you have an artistic background growing up? Although I haven’t had a formal artistic background, I have always loved music, played the clarinet and piano and enjoyed art at school. I loved to dress up and Mum has some amazing photos of me trying lipsticks and outfits from a young age. Our school artwork has alway had a place next to the ‘famous’ pictures in our family home. What do you love most about your job? I really feel privileged to be part of my clients’ special days, whether it’s a formal, wedding or special birthday event. I love to pamper them and help give them the confidence they want in their appearance.
“I’m fun-loving but when it comes to the running and customer service side of my business, I’m very serious.” How do you keep up with all the new trends? Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest are definitely the best ways I stay tuned into all the new trends and styles. For relaxation, I keep up to date with all of your fashion magazines and the latest celebrity fashions etc. They seem to attract a following, wear the fashion and this often provides a good point of communication with my clients. I take notice of the colours and pigments along with the way textures and key reference pieces enhance a look and try and discuss them with the client. We work together to incorporate the new look into their makeup What’s the most exciting opportunity you have had as a freelance artist? The most exciting moment was being asked to come to the Gold Coast to do a wedding for a client, all expenses paid for. That was an amazing feeling because there are so many incredible make up artists interstate, so it was definitely a confidence boost. Unfortunately I already had two weddings booked for that date, and as incredible as it would of been my business ethic is to provide a fair service and so I kept true to my existing bookings. Another incredibly exciting moment for me was when Anastasia Beverly Hills reposted my photo on their Instagram page to their 6 million followers. That was a life stopping moment and has given me a confidence boost to think that a Canberra girl just starting out could be part of the worldwide makeup scene. And lastly being asked to do the cover and an 8 page spread of a magazine while still studying was definitely something that I will always remember. It was a crazy and surreal feeling.
Do you have a beauty muse that inspires you? I definitely do. One of my biggest style icons is Kim Kardashian. I admire the way she has always been able to maintain her individuality while wearing the new season’s style. I also follow YouTube artists, Jaclyn Hill and Desi Perkins.
What advice would you give to other women who would like to pursue a career in makeup? If you truly love makeup, then go for it, but please know that it’s not all fun and games. It is a serious career choice and profession. You can make it your business and achieve all the satisfaction and challenges that go along with following your passion. You can manage your own schedule but there’s no calling in sick on a weekend when you have 2 weddings of 6 people each booked for that day. You are your own manager, accountant and publicist. It can be an exhausting schedule but the rewards are worth it. I absolutely love what I do and spend spare time checking new online makeup sites and reflect on my client’s happiness to their new look. Its hard work but its so rewarding and the fact that I absolutely love what I do means that I don’t dread waking up early and going to bed late, that I run on coffee and your clients happiness. Other then makeup, what else are you passionate about? I absolutely love music and singing, that’s a true release for me. Family and travelling with my partner and then spending some time with our Pup at the Dog park also keeps me going.
What is your beauty philosophy? My beauty philosophy is to give an opportunity of happiness and confidence to my clients using my experience and techniques in an ethical and supportive way. I absolutely love the way I am able to make people feel after I have applied their new look. The feeling you get when you see your client look at themselves in the mirror and see how happy they are, the fact I can be a part of that special day is incredible to me.

MONIKA VIKTORIA
himsically working with watercolours, Monika Viktoria weaves romance and whispers of memories to create dreamy illustrations of delicate women.
Hi Monika, tell us a bit about yourself. I completed my BFA degree majoring in Printmaking in 2007, specifically focusing on Intaglio copperplate etching. I took part in a few curated exhibitions in Sydney and Melbourne focusing on feminine subject matter. In 2011 I was accepted into several International Art Residencies, and spent 3 years abroad painting and working on my art, before returning last year. I now live in a sleepy suburb at the foot of the Blue Mountains west of Sydney.
For how long have you had this passion for art? My mum told me the story of when my first grade teacher informed her in a parent-teacher interview that I was “a good drawer”. Apparently that was the moment that my young mind took art as my life calling, and my passion for creating has never weaned. However, I struggled within the stifling curriculum of High School Art and preferred to make up fantasy characters and create illustrations based on their backstories. I continued to do this privately throughout my Fine Art Degree, then was finally able to devote myself 94 • Stell Magazine
to the style I loved most after I finished all of my schooling. Your work is very feminine and romantic. What influences you? I struggled for a while to find “meaningful and deep” concepts to illustrate, until I just decided to simplify things and began asking my friends to pose for me. I found an infinite amount of inspiration in the girls I knew, each one beautiful and interesting in my eyes, with their own individual passions, talents, style and personalities. I continue to paint people I’ve met and had a personal connection with. I listen to music to help inspire me and bring me to the right emotions needed for the particular painting. A stanza or verse might stand out to me, desperate to be brought to life. Can you tell us why watercolour is your choice for your illustrations? After finishing my degree in printmaking I invested in a proper etching press and continued working in black and white for a while, before I found the restriction on colour too limiting. I picked up watercolours and taught myself to use them. The process seemed so natural to me I felt like I had found my perfect match. I apply it in a very personal manner, not adhering to traditional techniques or stiff pre-prescribed palette
combinations, preferring an organic approach to lifting and mixing colours along the way. Please take us through your design process. Once I have an idea I might quickly map out a very rough sketch, just to get the composition right. I’ll ask one of my friends whom I think has the right persona to portray the character I’d like to embody, and style a shoot around my rough composition sketch. During the photoshoot I’ll guide her poses, her expression, her movements to better reflect the mood of the character. I’ll sort through the final photo-series and rather than outright copying any single photo, I’ll lift out the elements from the different photographs that will best illustrate my concept. I’ll draw the figure in water-soluble pencil, then gradually work up the painting in many translucent layers of watercolour washes. What do you feel when you are illustrating? I become very emotionally attached to my work, feeling a strong empathy for whichever “mood” I am hoping to capture within the piece. I get told I listed to a lot of incredibly melancholic music, but I find it beautifully inspiring to imbue raw emotion into my pieces. I draw upon a lot of my personal experiences, including some unsettling sleep paralysis episodes, as well as all the joys and complications surrounding love and
relationships. What’s your working environment like? Is there a particular room that you like to work from? I’ve moved around a lot, so I always try to secure a small room in each place I’ve lived in as my studio, filling it with the feminine and floral knick-knacks I’ve collected over the years to help create a space resonating with the style I like to capture in my work. What style of music do you like to listen to when you’re creating? My top 10 for inspirational voices and lyrics to listen to whilst painting are: Coco Rosie, Lykke Li, Ane Brun, Florence and the Machine, Lana Del Rey, Daughter, Joanna Newsom, Fleet Foxes, Woodkid, Anthony and the Johnsons Other than art, what else are you passionate about? I love quirky artist-made dolls, and have an out of control collection of porcelain ball joint dolls and Japanese Blythe dolls. Besides my paintings I devote a lot of my time to creating miniature haute-couture for the various types of dolls I collect under the brand-name of “Orchid’s Designs”, and often use the dolls themselves as dimensional canvases for full-body floral paintings. 95
