Stenden is a university for curious people: for people who want to expand their horizon, who want to learn, but also for those who want to come up with solutions for questions that exist among people, organisations and in society. Stenden’s educational system is based on three pillars: Problem Based Learning (PBL), research and internationalisation. PROBLEM BASED LEARNING Problem based learning is a way of learning that is very different from the traditional transfer of knowledge. You will work together in groups of 12 to 15 students and systematically analyse and solve actual cases. A tutor will guide you and make sure you reach your objectives. With PBL you obtain all the skills needed for the future, such as analysing, presenting, advising and solution-oriented thinking. RESEARCH PBL also prepares you for doing research: an important part of all the programmes at Stenden. From the first year you will develop your research skills. The problems you will be researching are actual cases and they become more substantial and complex each year. The university has an extensive network of companies and organisations, which makes it possible to align the programme’s content with the demands of the work field and provide you with the knowledge and skills needed for your future. INTERNATIONALISATION You will learn in an international environment at Stenden. Introduction Applied Business Administration is a fascinating and rapidly changing field both in education and the industry. Professional management calls for in depth knowledge, skills and an appropriate attitude. The Stenden Applied Business Administration programme sets out to give students precisely those qualities. The Applied Business Administration programme prepares students for a position in senior management. THE PROGRAMME Starting a degree is like entering a company; in the first year, students enter as a new employee, growing gradually within the organisation. When they enter their second year, they take on the role of a manager with a responsibility for ensuring that the organisation is running well and looking into how processes can be improved. In the final phase of the degree programme, students further explore the role of a manager, examining what additional factors are involved and what skills are demanded. Each module ends with a progress test in line with the requirements of the Body of Knowledge, the set of skills needed for a particular profession. In order to complete the degree and graduate successfully, students are required to do a paid internship to demonstrate their competitive edge in the real business world. After graduation, approximately 80% of our students find employment immediately.

THE PROGRAMME The Information Technology programme in Emmen offers numerous specializations. In the first year, the basics are laid with subjects such as programming languages, networks, databases, web technology and multimedia. Students are taught the different aspects of information technology and work in small groups on real case studies. In this process, the contact between students and teachers is significant and informal. In the second, third and fourth year of the programme, students specialise in software engineering, following an internship and completing the course with a final project. A degree in IT will give considerable work and career opportunities. IT is used in businesses, institutions and government organisations to make work processes, communication and the development of new products and services more efficient. Graduates may also start their own business or become selfemployed – the choices are practically unlimited.

Introduction The International Business and Languages (IBL) programme at Stenden is given at our Emmen campus. The programme is designed with the international environment and the role of international business relations in the current and future global marketplace in mind. Graduates of this programme are equipped with skills to grow from starting positions to middle and senior management positions. IBL graduates are able to play a leading role and represent their organisation as a fully-fledged discussion partner in commercial, legal and financial areas in three modern languages both verbally and in writing.

THE PROGRAMME The Dutch economy thrives on export. To keep stimulating export, businesses need well-educated people who can prepare and export products and/or services. They need people who know how to do business on an international level, speak foreign languages and can function in cross-cultural environments. These are exactly the characteristics IBL students posses, as the IBL programme is based on three pillars: International Business, Languages and Cross-Cultural Awareness.

INTERNATIONAL It is possible for our IBL students to study abroad for 6 months and take on an internship as well. In the fourth year, our students focus on their major International Marketing & Cross Cultural Management; they work on a real business case for a company that is working in international business! The second semester focuses entirely on graduating; they do research on internal business subjects. However, there’s also a possibility to carry out a research in the Netherlands. MINORS IN THIS PROGRAMME You have a lot to choose, for instance: › Study a combined program offered in Bali and Bangkok › or study the diplomacy minor in Bangkok › or study the minor entrepreneurship in South Africa. As all IBL students are abroad throughout the third year (one semester study abroad and one semester internship), there are no minors for the IBL programme in Emmen. For their study abroad, IBL students can opt for one of our wide range of exchange programmes or to go on Grand Tour. An exchange programme gives students the opportunity to take courses not offered at their home campus. You benefit from studying in a new environment, meeting new people and experiencing different cultures. It is an excellent way of combining study and travel. As for Grand Tour, the combined program offered in Bali and Bangkok is popular among IBL students. The diplomacy minor in Bangkok is also highly appreciated. And imagine following the minor entrepreneurship in South Africa! Of course, IBL students can also follow business courses at our Campus in Qatar. PBL CASE During the first semester of the second year students will carry out an analysis of a potential export market of the traditional Dutch product ‘Spekkies’ [Marsh Mellows]. This product will need to be exported to an Eastern European country. The students will make a country analysis, a SWOT analysis and deliver a complete export plan. THE PROGRAMME “No theory without practice”, in the IHM programme we therefore put students straight to work in our own learning company, the Stenden Hotel. Students progress from service positions to supervisory positions in the second year. In the third year, students take on the responsibility for an entire department and learn about important aspects of management. During the ten month management internship in the final year students put the theory into practice in an external hospitality business. THE PROGRAMME The International Logistics programme has two phases, namely the propaedeutic year (the 1st year) and the main phase. During the propaedeutic year, students are introduced to the various aspects of the logistics process, from marketing, production and logistics to internal organisation and purchasing. They develop skills in logistics, communications and commerce – in short, a diverse range of subjects. PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE The knowledge acquired in the first year forms the basis for the main phase of the programme. The subsequent 3 years are spent delving further into the propaedeutic subjects through projects investigating for instance the logistics process from raw material to final product. Throughout the entire programme students work in small groups on real business cases, bringing theory and practice together in a challenging and enjoyable way. GRADUATION WITHIN A COMPANY The main phase of the programme includes an internship. It forms an important part of the course, enabling students to apply their knowledge and experience to practice. THE PROGRAMME The Leisure Management degree focuses on the organisation and coordination of free-time experiences. Students receive a solid grounding in marketing, business economics, new media, socially responsible entrepreneurship and communication. In addition, students gain practical experience in the leisure industry working in the various sectors of event management, tourism, sports, arts, culture, recreation and media.In the first year of the programme, students learn about the various developments, management and product development in the leisure industry. An important component of the first academic year is the concept of new business in which students set up an own business. The emphasis in the second year is on organising an event or festival. The third year focuses on strategic management and a real research project followed by six-month optional minors as specialisations. THE PROGRAMME The Media and Entertainment Management programme teaches students about communication tools and techniques and how to connect information, experiences, theory and practice. Cross-media communication is a key focus of the programme. The academic year is divided into four modules of nine weeks, with each module carrying a main theme that is studied and explored from a number of different angles.In the propaedeutic year, students are introduced to different types of multimedia techniques and tools, and are trained to use them in practice by setting up four media productions. Most of the academic team members are active in the media industry, so students learn directly from qualified people within the field. Students are also taught subjects such as statistics, management, marketing, ethics, organisational sciences and business economics. In the second year of the programme, students further explore the theories behind media analysis, human resource management, brand management and marketing communication. The third year focuses on the strategic management and students spend one of the modules working for a company. Stenden is well known for strong links with the industry, and numerous companies (both national and international) prefer Stenden students because they are known for being independent while possessing problem solving capabilities. Most employers look for these qualities in possible candidates. Students can also study abroad for one semester.

Introduction The International Teacher Education (ITEPS) programme prepares students for a career as a teacher in an international primary school. Stenden in Meppel offers teacher education for international schools. You become a Bachelor of Education with an international diploma supplement. The international platform of International Specialisations is called ITEPS (International Teacher Education for Primary Schools). Stenden runs the ITEPS programme at its campus in Meppel in collaboration with two other universities in Norway and Denmark. Because this course qualifies you to teach in Dutch primary schools, you will have to pass the Dutch language test, a mathematics, history, geography and science test during the first year and you will receive support for these tests. To prepare for the Dutch language and other tests you can take a basic preparatory test before you start the course.

THE PROGRAMME For the international specialisation, Stenden in Meppel works with a number of other European universities as well as with representatives from the world of international education. The programme therefore has a truly international character and, because courses are taught by British, Norwegian, Danish and Dutch teachers, the teaching language is English. English is also the first language used in international schools, which makes it even more important that you master the language. STRONG BASIS In the first year of the programme the emphasis is on English. You work on your own personal development in the language, providing a strong basis to help you through the course – and the rest of your study. The focus is also English in the classroom, how to teach children to read and write, for example, and some of the underlying popular theories of first and subsequent language acquisition. There is even an opportunity to follow a summer course in English to develop your skills even further. The first year of the programme also includes subjects such as Educational Studies and Democratic Citizenship, and throughout the year teaching is practiced in international and Dutch primary schools. As with the other teacher-training programmes in the Netherlands, there is a compulsory Dutch language test and a series of basic knowledge tests in the first year. The ITEPS course includes preparation for these tests. What’s more, in order to obtain your propaedeutic (first-year) certificate, you need to have obtained a C1 level of English. The first year English programme is designed to support you in reaching this level. A native speaker also teaches this part of the English course. CHALLENGING TEACHING-PRACTICE PLACEMENTS AND INTERESTING SUBJECTS Each course year includes regular school-based experience, which is challenging, fun and you learn a lot. From almost the first week of the course, you will make weekly visits to an international school, first to observe and then to carry out tasks based on your work in college. There is also a period of practice in a Dutch school for your familiarity with the national education system. After the first year, you learn how to carry out practical research and follow a choice of optional subjects, see the table below (one of the subjects you have to choose is Mathematics). Some of these subjects are offered at our partner colleges in Norway and Denmark. Part of the course requirement is that you spend at least a full semester at one of the partner colleges where you will also continue your teaching practice. You finish the programme with a final project either in the Netherlands or abroad.

THE PROGRAMME Sustainable tourism lies at the core of this programme. Students learn to prioritise the needs of the community and the environment of a tourist destination, they learn about the impact tourism has on different cultures and examine which economic factors play a role. Once again, no theory without practice. Already in the first year, a visit to a European city and a rural tourist area is included, followed by a field trip to the Mediterranean in the second year. Students are introduced to all aspects of a managerial position and are taught how to market a product or service using specific marketing tools and put theory into practice. To connect theory to the real world, students practice and work with a management simulation game in the third year. During the final year students undertake a sevenmonth paid internship within an industry-related company and write their bachelor thesis. Upon graduation, graduates receive the title of Bachelor of Business Administration. With this internationally recognised title, graduates are able to find work anywhere in the world.

MINOR Stenden has a major-minor structure. Although the major is the main focus of the programme, the student can deepen or broaden their knowledge by following a minor. Stenden offers minor programmes in: Community Tourism: covering small-scale tourism in developing countries in collaboration with development organisations and the tourism industry. Heritage Tourism: looking at the management of natural and cultural heritage and examining not only opportunities for tourism, but also how heritage sites can be protected and maintained. Adventure Tourism: focusing on planning and managing outdoor activities such as climbing, diving, rafting and parasailing, and studying the development of sustainable tourism products and innovative strategies. EUROPEAN TOURISM FUTURES INSTITUTE (ETFI) Stenden – with the support of HISWA and Recron – has launched the European Tourism Futures Institute (ETFI) in November 2009; an institute that specialized in the development and application of scenario planning for the tourism and leisure sector. ETFI is liased to the School of Leisure and Tourism Management of Stenden university. The institute makes an active and inspiring contribution to tourism futures by using scenario planning methodologies. The ETFI is ‘painting pictures about the future of tourism’ by compiling future scenarios in close collaboration with key representatives from the industry, governmental organizations and researchers and experts from various fields. This methodology is distinctive to common forecasting techniques as it aims to create a common vision of all key stakeholders by actively involving them in the co-creation and implementation of the scenarios.

GOOD FOR THE WORLD The Tourism and Hotel Management programmes at Stenden meet the Standards of Excellence set by the International Centre of Excellence. SHORT TRACK PROGRAMME The Short Track International Tourism Management Course enables international students to obtain a BBA degree in Tourism Management through accreditation of their prior learning and work experience. The programme varies between 1.5, 2 and 3 years, depending on your prior experience and qualifications.
CASE BASED LEARNING: STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT Jörg Wenzel, teacher Tourism Management: ‘You learn to prepare strategic choices, for Ryan air (one of the largest European budget airliners) for example’ ‘Things are not always as they seem at first glance. Not in the tourism industry either. Therefore, you will learn to analyze organizations in the third year module Strategic Management. Important for a manager. Only then can you get to the root of a problem or issue and make sound strategic choices. You also learn how to prepare these choices. And test them. A good example is the case for Ryan air. Students are instructed to analyze this company. That, of course, reveals negative publicity and controversial statements from the manager. What is the problem here? Or better yet: is there a problem? Instinctively you will say yes. But when analyzed you will discover that the many media reports, even if they are negative, benefit the turnover. This is essential information for developing a successful long-term strategy’.

COURSE CONTENT Central to the course is of course the English language. The aim for students is to achieve level 6 in the IELTS exam. The course is given by native speakers who are qualified and experienced in second language teaching, applying their expertise, the latest technology and an understanding of the complexities of learning a second language at this high level. The classes include speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary and general English as well as general IELTS exam skills. At the end of the course the students take, on-site, the IELTS exam. The course also includes a module, called ‘Life and Study Skills’ (LSS) showing students how to cope with the style of teaching and learning at Stenden, which may be totally different from the methods they have been used to in their own countries. In addition, the course includes an introduction to ‘ProblemBased Learning’ (PBL), which helps the students develop their skills in critical thinking. Dutch culture may be very different from the student’s home country and the LSS module is designed to help students achieve an understanding of the new country so that settling-in is as easy as possible. The students are assigned to a teacher-mentor responsible for the student’s academic progress throughout the course. The teachers regularly discuss the students’ progress and will quickly intervene to let a student know of an area of concern.

PROGRAMME START DATES You can start this programme in either September or February. GATEWAY TO HOSPITALITY EDUCATION Moreover, students get introduced to the different study programmes, like for example the ‘Gateway to Hospitality Education’ programme. The ‘Gateway to Hospitality Education’ two-day orientation program is designed to build the first link between ELC students and Stenden Hotel Management School. It also helps ELC students acclimate to Stenden’s distinctive living and learning community. Intercultural communication workshops, wine lectures and guided tours through the hotel and university will be offered during these two days. The Problem based learning (PBL) philosophy of Stenden University will be presented with the help of a special made PBL problem. Next to that, current international students will support the ELC students to easily adapt to the life in a foreign country. The “gateway to hospitality education” programme has three primary goals in mind: 1 To welcome students to Stenden and engage them with the history, traditions and values of our university. 2 To introduce students to the opportunities, responsibilities and resources of the Stenden curriculum, more importantly the content of the hospitality study. 3 To assist students in connecting with the community of their peers and the campus and local communities. Goal of the Programme The Pre Master Programme is especially designed for international students and will combine intensive academic English language training, study skills and academic subjects to ensure a swift adaption to Stenden’s Master programmes. Students will build greater confidence in expressing themselves and engaging with fellow participants, lecturers and professors in the Master programmes. Students can be expected to achieve better academic performances and tackle more complex research projects in an effective and professional way. After successfully completing Stenden’s Pre Master Programme including an IELTS exam, participants are guaranteed entry into either Stenden’s Master in International Service Management or Master in Leisure and Tourism Studies. The programme is taught on Stenden’s Leeuwarden campus with full access to the (digital) library and all other facilities at Stenden. The Pre Master Programme is also accessible for students who do meet the entry requirements for the Master programmes but simply want to refresh or upgrade their knowledge and academic skills.
SUBJECTS Academic English is a key subject in the Pre Master Programme, which is fairly different from regular English language training. Thanks to the country’s international orientation, other languages are widely spoken – familiarity with French and German is common and it will be hard to find anyone that does not speak English. In fact, approximately 90% of the Dutch population speaks English – a percentage not found anywhere else in continental Europe. It was therefore obvious that the Netherlands would become the first non-English speaking country in the world to offer course programmes taught entirely in English. At Stenden, these programmes are delivered in part by native English-speaking staff to maintain the highest teaching standards.

STENDEN LEEUWARDEN Leeuwarden is situated in the north of the Netherlands, about 140 km Northeast of Amsterdam and only 100 km away from the German border. The Wadden Sea (UNESCO World heritage) and its four islands with lots of pristine nature and water sports possibilities are, with a distance of 20 km, within spitting distance of the student city Leeuwarden. The historic city centre and captivating cultural heritage of the inner city but also the numerous cafés, boutiques and small shopping streets makes Leeuwarden ‘European Cultural Capital’ in 2018. With its small canals and bridges, Leeuwarden is also called ‘the Venice of the North’. No less than 25,000 Dutch and international students attend the city’s three universities. EMMEN Emmen, a town of roughly 110,000 inhabitants, lies in the northeast of the Netherlands. The city is a few kilometers away from the German border and therefore part of an active trade community with Germany. It’s also the focus of the largest connected industrial area in the north of the country, so it’s no surprise that the town has developed into a dynamic university location. In the centre of Emmen is Dierenpark Emmen, one of Europe’s finest and well-visited zoos, where animals roam free over large areas. Sports lovers are well catered for by – for example - the 13 sports halls and 8 swimming pools. A single sports card allows students to make use of all the sports facilities at an attractive price. Those who prefer to party can do so at a host of bars and cafes frequented by students in Emmen’s town centre. why stenden Stenden University of Applied Sciences with its Dutch campuses in Leeuwarden and Emmen, is a dynamic and truly international institute. With approximately 11,000 students, 25% from outside the Netherlands, Stenden is one of the most international places to study in Europe, if not the world. Service management is the core discipline in our institute with the largest university for hospitality management & tourism management studies in Europe. Internships provide an essential link between education and employment. Usually internship takes place in the final year, which is a transaction phase from graduation to employment. All students of Stenden’s Bachelor programmes spend a significant period of their studies undertaking a paid internship. Stenden maintains strong links with business, offering students internship in countries such as the USA, UK, Canada, Germany, France, Spain, the Netherlands and all over Europe. As an intern students put their skills and knowledge into practice, gaining work experience within their field of study. A significant number of students are employed by their internship employer and can start a career immediately after graduation. 36

High quality and affordable education
All programmes from Stenden meet the quality standards from the Dutch government and its quality and accreditation assurance body. The Accreditation Organization of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO) is the independent accreditation organization set up by the Dutch and Flemish governments, whose primary goal is to provide an expert and objective judgement of the quality of higher education in the Netherlands. When comparing to other countries, such as USA, UK or Switzerland, the tuition fees in the Universities in the Netherlands are relatively lower. At the same time Dutch education system is ranked 7th globally.
The Stenden Learning Companies: Theory meets practice
The in-house Learning Companies are professional training enterprises for specific Stenden degree programmes. Here, students not only receive regular tuition, they also benefit from training in professional organisation, working on real assignments from external customers and gaining enormous hands-on experience. The Learning Companies include our four-star Stenden university hotel (including restaurants, a conference and events centre and the university canteens) and a studio for media productions. Each programme has its own dedicated Learning Company or dedicated practical component. The combination of academic and practical or managerial experience not only ensures knowledge but also essential skills for their work field. As this is exactly what employers value, Stenden graduates are ensured of a strong position in the international job market.

Problem Based Learning
Problem Based Learning (PBL) is one of the key elements of Stenden’s education and is quite different from traditional teaching. Students meet twice a week in groups of 12 to 15 and work together to systematically solve cases and problems reflecting real-life situations. PBL sessions are guided and supervised by a Stenden tutor to ensure learning goals are met. Graduates from Stenden look back on their PBL sessions with great satisfaction, claiming it still to be extremely useful in their careers. In addition to PBL, each programme includes workshops, lectures and presentations, offering students a diverse and challenging learning environment.

facilities & services We know that studying in a foreign country can be an exciting prospect. Therefore, we focus on providing specific support for international students. We offer a warm welcome to students from all over the world.
Intro week
An introduction week is organized for all international students. The StendenWise programme helps new students get better acquainted with the University, and first-year students have a buddy (a senior student) to guide them through their first days in the Netherlands. Every student has a Study Coach, who helps with various study and personal matters.
Information Centre
Stenden Leeuwarden offers both students and staff members the opportunity to contemplate, pray and meditate. At the Contemplation Centre, you can use the Buddhist/Hindu, Islamic and Christian room. Books, music, incense and special clothes are available.
Student Housing
Stenden guarantees accommodation for all NON-EU and exchange students in Leeuwarden location. Students from within the EU will be assisted on first come first served basis. In Emmen location all international students without exceptions will have a guaranteed accommodation. Kamerbemiddeling is the official partner company of Stenden, which offers a wide range of student housing options. Stenden offers a wide range of rooms in shared flats as well as independent studios. All housing is located in the city or near by the campus. The rooms are fully furnished with all necessary facilities for comfortable life and study.

The Country Club is an international student club at Stenden Emmen. Everyone is welcome, irrespective of where you come from, be it the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, China, or any other country.
