Introduction International Applied Business Administration is a fascinating and rapidly changing field both in education and the industry. Professional management calls for in depth knowledge, skills and an appropriate attitude. The Stenden International Applied Business Administration programme sets out to give students precisely those qualities. The International Applied Business Administration programme prepares students for a position in senior management. As a business administrator, graduates are required to ensure that the part of the organisation they are responsible for performs well. Whether it is ICT, purchasing, finance, facilities management or administration, these managers have to know what is needed and how the department can contribute successfully to the greater objective. A typical graduate of this programme is able to identify problems quickly and enjoys solving them effectively. “You could say that IABA is a business administration programme with a lot of practical assignments. That appealed to me. You learn to solve professional cases. At the same time you practice working together in a team and you find out what role suits you best. The programme gives insight in the way managers think about a company. That is knowledge future employers appreciate.”
THE PROGRAMME Starting a degree is like entering a company; in the first year, students enter as a new employee, growing gradually within the organisation. When they enter their second year, they take on the role of a manager with a responsibility for ensuring that the organisation is running well and looking into how processes can be improved. In the final phase of the degree programme, students further explore the role of a manager, examining what additional factors are involved and what skills are demanded. Each module contains various forms of assessments in line with the requirements of the Body of Knowledge & Skills needed for a particular profession. In order to complete the degree and graduate successfully, students are required to do a paid internship to demonstrate their competitive edge in the real business world. After graduation, approximately 80% of our students find employment immediately.

THE PROGRAMME The Information Technology programme in Emmen offers numerous specializations. In the first year, the basics are laid with subjects such as programming languages, networks, databases, web technology and multimedia. Students are taught the different aspects of information technology and work in small groups on real case studies. In this process, the contact between students and teachers is significant and informal. In the second, third and fourth year of the programme, students specialise in software engineering, following an internship and completing the course with a final project. A degree in IT will give considerable work and career opportunities. IT is used in businesses, institutions and government organisations to make work processes, communication and the development of new products and services more efficient. Graduates may also start their own business or become self-employed – the choices are practically unlimited.
STENDEN MYCONCEPT The IT programme in Emmen makes use of the Fabrication Laboratory: Stenden MyConcept. The FabLab has the latest innovative devices available, including a 3D printer so that designs can be printed three-dimensionally.

Introduction The International Business and Languages (IBL) programme at Stenden is given at our Emmen campus. The programme is designed with the international environment and the role of international business relations in the current and future global marketplace in mind. Graduates of this programme are equipped with skills to grow from starting positions to middle and senior management positions. IBL graduates are able to play a leading role and represent their organisation as a fully-fledged discussion partner in commercial, legal and financial areas in three modern languages both verbally and in writing.

As all IBL students are abroad throughout the third year (one semester study abroad and one semester internship), there are no minors for the IBL programme in Emmen. For their study abroad, IBL students can opt for one of our wide range of exchange programmes or to go on Grand Tour. An exchange programme gives students the opportunity to take courses not offered at their home campus. You benefit from studying in a new environment, meeting new people and experiencing different cultures. It is an excellent way of combining study and travel. As for Grand Tour, the combined program offered in Bali and Bangkok is popular among IBL students. The diplomacy minor in Bangkok is also highly appreciated. And imagine following the minor entrepreneurship in South Africa! Of course, IBL students can also follow business courses at our Campus in Qatar. PBL CASE During the first semester of the second year students will carry out an analysis of a potential export market of the traditional Dutch product ‘Spekkies’ [Marsh Mellows]. This product will need to be exported to an Eastern European country. The students will make a country analysis, a SWOT analysis and deliver a complete export plan. Furthermore students will go to a major (Eastern) European city.

INTERNATIONAL It is possible for our IBL students to study abroad for 6 months and take on an internship as well. In the fourth year, our students focus on their major International Marketing & Cross Cultural Management; they work on a real business case for a company that is working in international business! The second semester focuses entirely on graduating; they do research on internal business subjects. However, there’s also a possibility to carry out a research in the Netherlands.

INTERNATIONAL FOCUS Hospitality is a global industry that requires internationally mobile employees. Many multinational companies such as Hilton, Marriott and Starwood offer management programmes to young internationally mobile graduates. Our IHM programme is developed with this in mind and our internship office, which has excellent industry connections and enjoys a global reputation, prepares paid placements worldwide for their 4th year students in countries such as the US, Australia, South Africa, UK and lots of other European and Asian countries. INTERNATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES The hospitality sector is an international work field and our programme reflects this. Part of the programme is therefore offered abroad in one of our International Branch Campus Sites (IBCs) Thailand, Qatar, Indonesia or South Africa. This is called the Grand Tour. Students are able to study for an exchange semester at one of the 16 partner universities in the hospitality sector around the world. Stenden University offers a world of opportunities.

THE PROGRAMME “No theory without practice”, in the IHM programme we therefore put students straight to work in our own learning company, the 4* Stenden Hotel, restaurant, conference rooms, canteen, café and bar. Students progress from service positions to supervisory positions in the second year. In the third year, students take on the responsibility for an entire department and learn about important aspects of management. During the 10 month management internship in the final year students put the theory into practice in an external hospitality business. Upon graduation, students receive a Bachelor of Business Administration, an internationally recognised degree that offers global opportunities.
INTERNATIONAL REPUTATION Stenden Hotel Management School in Leeuwarden is the largest hotel management programme in Europe. In the 2011 accreditation, the programme was awarded a distinctive feature in “Real World Learning.” Internationally, the programme is rated as one of the best and is known for its modern, innovative and dynamic education. REAL WORLD LEARNING The 4* Stenden Hotel is a commercial hotel business which means it is bookable through booking sites such as booking.com and therefore national and international business and leisure guest visit the hotel for overnight stays, conferences, meetings and F&B. The 28 hotel rooms have an average occupational rate of 70% which allow students to really learn and practice in a real life business setting.
NUMEROUS SPECIALISATION POSSIBILITIES Students can follow minors at all International Branch Campus Sites (IBCs). The IHM programme is offered at all IBCs except in Thailand, therefore students can follow regular modules abroad. Management programme offers a national or international future with companies, government authorities or non-profit organisations. The Netherlands is proud of its reputation of having a healthy investment environment for international companies and of its role as logistic hub in Europe.
There is a significant demand for Inter national Logistics Management graduates, both in the Netherlands and abroad, so graduates could take on a position as: › LOGISTICS MANAGER PLANNING, steering and coordinating the processes within a company in order to keep quality high but costs low whilst ensuring goods are moved and stored efficiently. › PLANNER responsible for the correct and timely delivery of orders, managing the stock, monitoring the transport costs and planning and liaising with carriers. › SALES MANAGER responsible for the sale of products and services and in
charge of a sales team (consisting of sales representatives), often working closely with the marketing department. › EXPORT MANAGER, usually within a large export company, concerned with the purchasing and sales of products abroad; purchasing products, finding overseas purchasers and then delivering the products smoothly. › PURCHASING MANAGER responsible for a company’s purchasing policy, possessing astute commercial insights and knowledge into how the company and the market operate to be able to determine appropriate purchasing strategies.

GRADUATION WITHIN A COMPANY The main phase of the programme includes an internship. It forms an important part of the course, enabling students to apply their knowledge and experience to practice. Rewarding and enlightening, the internship is excellent preparation for a career, giving students the chance to find out about the various professions and positions in the sector and discover what profession would most suit them. The programme finishes with a practical final project centred round a particular problem. This is undertaken within a company or organisation – possibly even a future employer. Minors play an important role in gaining further depth and specialising in a specific field of interest. Within logistics management, students can follow minors such as Green logistics.
These are of course just a few examples. Some students get jobs as production managers or logistics consultants, working either for a company or freelance.

A bachelor degree in International Logistics Management enables students to take on the management of essential business processes. Graduates are able to oversee aspects such as the optimal flow of goods, planning, warehousing and transport, or manage a production department. The International Logistics
PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE The knowledge acquired in the first year represents the basics for the main phase of the programme. During the subsequent 3 years you are building up knowledge and experience through projects investigating for instance the logistics process from raw material to final product. Throughout the entire programme students work in small groups on real business cases, bringing theory and practice together in a challenging and enjoyable way.

THE PROGRAMME The International Logistics programme has two phases, namely the foundation year (the 1st year) and the main phase. PBL CASE In your Problem Based Learning case you will work on a real life case. In this case we offer a mix of business and pleasure. Learn to put theory into practice. One of the cases is an export or marketing plan for a food manufacturer who wants to conquer a new market. The research is prepared in Emmen. During an excursion to the new export country, students investigate how consumers react to the new product and what would be the best way to introduce the new product.

THE PROGRAMME The Leisure Management degree focuses on the organisation and coordination of free-time experiences. Students receive a solid grounding in marketing communication, new earning models, the use of social media, socially responsible entrepreneurship and communication. In addition, students gain practical experience in the leisure industry working in the various sectors of event management, tourism, sports, arts, culture, recreation and media. In the first year of the programme, students learn about the various developments, management and concept development in the leisure industry. An important component of the first academic year is the concept of new business in which students set up their own business, Young Entrepeneurship. The emphasis in the second year is on organising an event or festival for a company in the leisure industry. During this phase students learn about project management, creativity, concept development and research. During the second year students work for half a year one day a week for a leisure company. The third year focuses on strategic management and networks directing followed by sixmonth optional minors as specialisations. In the fourth year, students are required to complete a seven of ten month international or national internship. Students complete the programme by writing their thesis.

YEAR 1 The first year is an orientation of the leisure market and service management in general. The focus will mainly be on the operational side of businesses in the leisure industry. Together with other students, you will set up a company, and gain valuable experience covering the diverse aspects of entrepreneurship.
Leisure Life This module lays down the foundation for the rest of the programme. What is leisure really? What motivates people to join leisure activities? What trends and developments play a role? What does your own leisure time look like, and how can you describe it?
Experience Marketing The focus of this module will be leisure experience and its marketing. The module teaches you that traditional marketing is no longer effective and needs a different approach. Consumer psychology, experience marketing and trans-industrial media are important subjects.
World of Leisure The leisure industry consists of several separate industries: media, tourism, recreation, art/ culture and sports. We will focus on current themes within these industries, such as sustainability and the influence of social media.
Organisation and management Students will focus on organisations that are active within the leisure industry. What kind of organisations are they? What is the influence of the organisation’s culture on its services? Which leadership styles are important within this industry?
YEAR 2 The leisure market will be viewed from a tactical management perspective in the second year. Students will be introduced to all aspects of organising an event. They will actually organise this event in the 4th module for a contractor from the industry. During the second year students will work one day a week for half a year for a leisure company.
HRM Employees are of great importance to a leisure organisation. This module takes you through all the HRM processes: From developing an HR strategy, to the operational execution of HR activities, such as conducting progress interviews and organising motivational meetings.
Leisure Operations During this module, you will learn what it takes to organise and execute an event. How do you make sure the event is sustainable? What is, for example, queue management and how do you draw up a financial plan for it? In addition, you will learn to use models and processes to manage and monitor events.
Concepting Leisure In this module you will be given the tools to create your own meaningful experiences. Concept development and story telling are important themes. You will learn how to apply these within an organisation.
Leisure Lab This is an experimental module with a focus on the future of leisure, innovation and sustainability. Students will learn how to evaluate events and projects and how to apply several techniques, such as social media, scenario planning and creative thinking.
YEAR 3 Strategic thinking will be the focus in the third year. You will form your own vision on the role of leisure in society. There is a growing call for independence and responsibility during this year. Minors will also be followed, either in the Netherlands or abroad.
Minor 1 and 2 Graduation profile: Sports Management, Art & Culture Management, Tourism Management, Event Management or approximately 80 other minors within Stenden. It is also possible to follow an exchange programme at universities abroad or go on Grand Tour.
Leisure Networks This module lets you experience that a Leisure Manager is primarily a director of networks. Today, no organisation operates on their own anymore. Cooperation is essential! Within and outside of the industry. You will be able to create partnerships within a multidisciplinary setting.
Leisure Strategy The leisure industry is keen on developments in the environment. This module focuses on the assessment of the strategic position of an organisation, community or region, in order to develop options for further growth and improvement.
YEAR 4 This year is dedicated to research and graduation. You will go on a 7 or 10 months (international) internship and write your final thesis, preferably at your internship company.
7 or 10 month (international) internship / Graduation phase (modules 1 through 4) During the graduation phase, you will research cases from the work field or the organisation. You draw up an improvement plan, a new concept or a product-market combination. In the final research you can show that you have the skills of at least a starting professional.

INTERNATIONAL FOCUS The Leisure Management programme is renowned for its practical and international approach. Guest speakers, business presentations, setting-up a company and field trips are all part of the course, and with its own learning company and internship office, Stenden offers a broad range of intern positions in the Netherlands and worldwide. EUROPEAN TOURISM FUTURES INSTITUTE (ETFI) Stenden university – with the support of HISWA and Recron – has launched the European Tourism Futures Institute (ETFI) in November 2009; an institute that specializes in the development and application of scenario planning for the tourism and leisure sector. ETFI is liased to the School of Leisure and Tourism Management of Stenden university. The institute makes an active and inspiring contribution to tourism futures by using scenario planning methodologies. The ETFI is ‘painting pictures about the future of tourism’ by compiling future scenarios in close collaboration with key representatives from the industry, governmental organizations and researchers and experts from various fields. This methodology is distinctive to common forecasting techniques as it aims to create a common vision of all key stakeholders by actively involving them in the co-creation and implementation of the scenarios. SPECIALIZATONS: SPORTS MANAGEMENT The Leisure Management programme offers you the possibility of choosing the Sports Management specialization. You specialize in the sports sector. If you choose this specialization you will be actively involved in sports during the final 18 months of your studies. In the first 2.5 years you will follow a broad Leisure Management programme that focuses on the entire leisure market. This is important because as a sports manager you will also deal, in practice, with related sectors such as tourism, media and (health) recreation. Subsequently , you will take two Sport Management minors. These are based on the national competency subject cluster of Sport Management and this way you will get all specific starting qualifications that are of importance in the sports sector. You will round off your studies with an internship and a final project related to the sports sector. RECREATION MANAGEMENT The Leisure Management programme offers you the possibility of choosing the Recration Management specialization. This enables you to specialize in the tourist and recreational sector thus increasing your chances of finding a job in this sector. If you choose this specialisation you will conduct an in-depth study of the tourist and recreational sector in the final eighteen months of your studies. To begin with, in the first 2.5 years of your studies you will follow a broad Leisure Management programme covering the entire leisure market. THE PROGRAMME The Media and Entertainment Management programme teaches students about communication tools and techniques and how to connect information, experiences, theory and practice. Cross-media communication is a key focus of the programme. The academic year is divided into four modules of ten weeks, with each module carrying a main theme that is studied and explored from a number of different angles. Introduction The International Teacher Education (ITEPS) programme prepares students for a career as a teacher in an international primary school. Stenden in Meppel offers teacher education for international schools. You hold a Bachelor of Education with an international diploma supplement. THE PROGRAMME Stenden in Meppel works with a number of other European universities as well as with representatives from the world of international education. The programme therefore has a truly international character and provides teacher educators and previous (international) primary school teachers and interculturally competent lecturers familiar with the curricula and needs of international schools. STRONG BASIS In the first year of the programme the emphasis is on English. You work on your own personal development in the language, providing a strong basis to help you through the course – and the rest of your study. The focus is also English in the classroom, how to teach children to read and write, for example, and some of the underlying popular theories of first and subsequent language acquisition. There is even an opportunity to follow a summer course in English to develop your skills even further. The first year of the programme also includes subjects such as Educational Studies and Democratic Citizenship, and throughout the year teaching is practiced in international and Dutch primary schools. All students must be able to communicate fluently in Dutch. As with the other teacher-training programmes in the Netherlands, there is a compulsory Dutch language test and a series of basic knowledge tests in the first year. The ITEPS course includes preparation for these tests. What’s more, in order to obtain your propaedeutic (first-year) certificate, you need to have obtained a C1 level of English. The first year English programme is designed to support you in reaching this level. A native speaker also teaches this part of the English course. CHALLENGING TEACHING-PRACTICE PLACEMENTS AND INTERESTING SUBJECTS Each course year includes regular school-based experience, which is challenging, fun and you learn a lot. From almost the first week of the course, you will make regular visits to an international school, first to observe and then to carry out tasks based on your work in college. There is also a period of practice in a Dutch school for your familiarity with the national education system. After the first year, you learn how to carry out practical research and follow a choice of optional subjects, see the table on the left (one of the subjects you have to choose is Mathematics). Some of these subjects are offered at our partner colleges in Norway and Denmark. Part of the course requirement is that you spend at least a full semester at one of the partner colleges where you will also continue your teaching practice. THE PROGRAMME Sustainable tourism lies at the core of this programme. Students learn to prioritise the needs of the community and the environment of a tourist destination, they learn about the impact tourism has on different cultures and examine which economic factors play a role. Once again, no theory without practice. Already in the first year, a visit to a European city and a rural tourist area is included, followed by a field trip to the Mediterranean in the second year. Students are introduced to all aspects of a managerial position and are taught how to market a product or service using specific marketing tools and put theory into practice. To connect theory to the real world, students practice and work with a management simulation game in the third year. During the final year students undertake a seven-month paid internship within an industry-related company and write their bachelor thesis. Upon graduation, graduates receive the title of Bachelor of Business Administration. With this internationally recognised title, graduates are able to find work anywhere in the world.

MINOR Stenden has a major-minor structure. Although the major is the main focus of the programme, the student can deepen or broaden their knowledge by following a minor. Tourism Management offers minor programmes in: Community Based Tourism (Thailand): covering smallscale tourism in developing countries in collaboration with development organisations and the tourism industry. Heritage Experience Management (Leeuwarden) focuses on the management of natural and cultural heritage. Next to researching the tourist possibilities, students also focus on maintaining and protecting this heritage. On behalf of local companies, students work on – for example - the development of an app or an experience related to heritage. This is done in cooperation with vocational students, allowing them to gain experience in the field of management and co-creation. Outdoor Leadership and Adventure (Leeuwarden) focuses on planning and guiding/managing outdoor activities. Think of climbing, mountain biking, survival, etc. You learn in practice what it takes to be an entrepreneur in this industry; how do you set up a business, what does it mean to be a leader, what problems, opportunities and challenges do you have to face and how do you handle these? EUROPEAN TOURISM FUTURES INSTITUTE (ETFI) Stenden – with the support of HISWA and Recron – has launched the European Tourism Futures Institute (ETFI) in November 2009; an institute that specialized in the development and application of scenario planning for the tourism and leisure sector. ETFI is liased to the School of Leisure and Tourism Management of Stenden university. The institute makes an active and inspiring contribution to tourism futures by using scenario planning methodologies. Goal of the Programme The Pre Master Programme is especially designed for international students and combines intensive academic English language training, study skills and academic subjects to ensure a swift adaption to Stenden’s Master programmes. Students will build greater confidence in expressing themselves and engaging with fellow students, lecturers and professors in the Master programmes. Students will be able to achieve better academic performances and tackle more complex research projects in an effective and professional way. This will prove to be an excellent platform for a successful career in industries like hospitality, tourism or services and added value for your personal and professional development.
COURSE CONTENT Central to the course is of course the English language. The aim for students is to achieve level 6 in the IELTS exam. The course is given by mostly native teachers from different cultures who are qualified and experienced in second language teaching, applying their expertise, the latest technology and an understanding of the complexities of learning a second language at this high level. The classes include speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary and Business English as well as general IELTS exam skills. At the end of the course the students take an on-site IELTS exam. The course also includes PBL lessons. PBL is a problem solving method used extensively at Stenden. It helps students to develop their skills in critical thinking. Dutch culture, teaching styles and learning styles may be very different from students’ home country. Consequently, these lessons also pay attention to more general study skills, showing students how to cope with the different styles of teaching and learning at Stenden. Dutch culture and cultural differences are also incorporated in the lessons to make settling in easier. The students are assigned to a teacher-mentor responsible for the students’ academic progress throughout the course. The teachers regularly discuss the students’ progress and will quickly intervene in time to offer guidance and avoid problems. SUBJECTS Academic English is a key subject in the Pre Master Programme, which is fairly different from regular English language training. The Netherlands has significantly more bikes than people (work that one out!), with thousands of kilometres of cycle lanes and traffic lights just for cyclists. LEEUWARDEN Leeuwarden is situated in the north of the Netherlands, about 140 km Northeast of Amsterdam and only 100 km away from the German border. The Wadden Sea (UNESCO World heritage) and its four islands with lots of pristine nature and water sports possibilities are, with a distance of 20 km, within spitting distance of the student city Leeuwarden. The historic city centre and captivating cultural heritage of the inner city but also the numerous cafés, boutiques and small shopping streets makes Leeuwarden ‘European Cultural Capital’ in 2018. With its small canals and bridges, Leeuwarden is also called ‘the Venice of the North’. No less than 25,000 Dutch and international students attend the city’s three universities. About 25% of all students are foreign, which makes Leeuwarden a truly international student town. It offers all facilities that one could wish for, such as several gyms, cinemas, theatres, bars, nightclubs, department stores and a shopping mall. Because of the size and the perfect biking system every location in Leeuwarden is easy to reach by bike. Everything is nearby, but still there is so much to do, to see and to experience. THE CAMPUS Stenden currently has more than 11,000 students from 85 different countries and employs 1,000 members of staff. Professors maintain the essential link between programmes and the professional field through applied research. EMMEN Emmen, a town of roughly 110,000 inhabitants, lies in the northeast of the Netherlands. The city is a few kilometers away from the German border and therefore part of an active trade community with Germany. In the centre of Emmen we find Dierenpark Emmen, one of Europe’s finest and well-visited zoos, where animals roam free over large areas. Sports lovers are well catered for by the 13 sports halls and 8 swimming pools. A single sports card allows students to make use of all the sports facilities at an attractive price. Emmen is a friendly, laid-back town, but still has plenty of bars and cafes for a night on the town. why stenden Stenden University of Applied Sciences with its Dutch campuses in Leeuwarden and Emmen, is a dynamic and truly international institute. With approximately 11,000 students, 25% from outside the Netherlands, Stenden is one of the most popular European international universities to study at. The in-house Learning Companies are professional training enterprises for specific Stenden degree programmes. Problem Based Learning
Problem Based Learning (PBL) is one of the key elements of Stenden’s education and is quite different from traditional teaching. Students meet twice a week in groups of 12 to 15 and work together on the cases and problems reflecting real-life situations. PBL sessions are guided and supervised by a Stenden tutor to ensure learning goals are met. Graduates from Stenden look back on their PBL sessions with great satisfaction, claiming it still to be extremely useful in their careers. In addition to PBL, each programme includes workshops, lectures and presentations, offering students a diverse and challenging learning environment.

Internships provide an essential link between education and employment. Usually internship takes place during the final year, which is a transaction phase from graduation to employment. All students of Stenden’s Bachelor programmes spend a significant period of their studies following a paid internship. Stenden’s Master degree programmes are characterised by a strong interconnection between education, research and employment. Stenden hosts the Academy of International Hospitality Research (AIHR) and the European Tourism Futures Institute (ETFI). You will be actively involved in either of these research units as a Stenden Master’s student. An introduction week is organized for all international students. Stenden guarantees accommodation for all NON-EU and exchange students at the Leeuwarden location. Students from within the EU will be assisted on a first come first served basis. APPLICATION PROCEDURE EU and NON-EU students applying for Bachelor programmes/ English language Course EU and NON-EU students need to apply for a Bachelor programme of English Language Course through national application system Studielink (www.studielink.nl) before the deadline. ENGLISH LANGUAGE COURSE
ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS In order to apply all the EU and NON-EU students need to have got one the following diplomas: › International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) or European Baccalaureate Diploma › High School diploma from an accredited institution › Five GCSE/GCE “O” level passes plus two “A” level passes › Associate Bachelor or Master Degree
If you do not have a sufficient level of English to be enrolled to one of Stenden’s Bachelor or Master studies, you can follow a short or long English prep-course. To be accepted to the English Language Course you need to pass English proficiency test with the below mentioned minimum scores:
ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS EU students: If you come from a country within the EU zone, you may be exempted from taking an English proficiency test. Exceptions will be made for students who followed their previous education in a country where English is the official working and educational language. All international students (except residents of the EU*/EER, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Monaco, USA and Switzerland), who will stay in the Netherlands for more than three months, need a VISA to enter the Netherlands. The International Office of Stenden will help international students to apply for the VISA through an accelerated procedure. Together with the entry VISA the International Office will apply for the residence permit, which will be issued for the duration of your study years. This means that you won’t need to renew your residence permit each year.
