Introduction FROM RUSSIA
“International Business and Languages is a commercial programme with a strong focus on intercultural communication. If you want to be successful in business in an international work field, then this is of distinctive importance. Our students are known to be entrepreneurial and adventurous, and they love to spread their wings.”
DIANA KOSTYUK
“The advantage of Problem Based Learning is that you can apply all gained knowledge. And, I can learn from my fellow-students, share experiences and just have a good time solving the cases. For me, PBL means creativity, communication, learning and experiencing.“
“The programme challenges you to see the world. You will gain a solid commercial-economic foundation, which you can use in various places in Europe or in the world. Part of the programme can be followed at one of Stenden’s campus sites at Bali, in South Africa, Qatar or Thailand, but many students also opt for minors at another university in another country.”
Studying at Stenden PROBLEM BASED LEARNING: THE KEY ELEMENT
Problem Based Learning (PBL) is one of the key elements of Stenden’s education and it is quite different from traditional teaching. Next to PBL theory classes and workshops are offered as supporting classes for students. It takes a little time getting used to it, but after the first few sessions, students are always enthusiastic about this way of learning. Students meet twice a week in groups of 12 to 15 and work together to systemically solve cases and problems reflecting real-life situations. Graduates acknowledge the value of PBL during internship and career.
“The research assignments are also mainly done outside of the Netherlands or are set up in an international context. For example, a student from the IBL programme did research for an Australian company on how to bring sheep’s wool to the Scandinavian market.”
LEARN PER THEME
“IBL offers you maximum freedom to realise your ambitions, during the programme and after graduation. Employers are very interested in IBL graduates, because they are eager to discover and conquer new markets. They especially appreciate their cultural sensitivity and their entrepreneurial attitude.”
Each study year at Stenden has four blocks of ten weeks. You work on one theme per block, in which practice is the focus. You will be introduced to all aspects of the theme in different subjects. The subjects therefore change per block, depending on the knowledge and skills you need for a certain theme. In the blocks you work in a project, in which all ‘building blocks’ are integrated.

From the first year, the IBL programme focuses on both the theoretical and practical sides of international trade. All aspects of international trade are explored: starting with an idea for a product or service to the marketing and offering to the end user.

International trade
In the IBL programme, intercultural communication is more than studying languages. The instruction language is English and, in addition, students choose a second language in the first year and a third modern foreign language in the second year. They can choose French, German, Spanish and Dutch (for non-Dutch students). These languages provide you with a foundation, but to be able to communicate effectively you need more than a language. Cultural differences influence many phases in the communication process: not just between people, but also within organisations (e.g. governments, companies, schools). Intercultural communication is therefore a common thread throughout the entire programme. Of course you will also gain extensive experience while working in an international learning environment. You study with peers from around the world. Studying three modern languages is an important part of the IBL programme, although International Business is the real common thread throughout the programme. To be succesful in international business you’ll need excellent skills in Intercultural Communication; communicating, learning and practicing all aspects of international business in an international environment.
You will have the opportunity to investigate the possibilities of exporting, as an example, marsh mellows [Dutch; spekjes] to an East-European country. With the assembled information and acquired experiences, you will have the tools to write an export plan in the second period: the pricing needs to be right of course, the safe transport of products and money to and from Prague is covered, and all necessary forms to cross the border have been arranged. Business Communication: meeting actual business partners Practice will come to you in the third block. Hooghoudt, a liquor producer, will visit the campus and you will visit Hooghoudt. This experience will be concluded with a communications plan for Hooghoudt, which you will present before a manager of the company. How do you manage your customer relationships and sales across borders? PEOPLE, PLANET, PROFIT In the final block of the second year, students will develop, for example, the entire sales process of Weleda’s organic care products and investigate in which BRIC countries these products can be brought to the market. The result will showcase a conceptual way of thinking and the ability to find a good balance between people, planet and profit.

MARISKA RECHTOP
“I found my place” “I started at the PABO [higher education for elementary school teachers], but it quickly became evident to me that this was not my direction. And studying English wasn’t either. Together with my study coach, I started looking at alternatives. I felt that languages needed to be a part of my new direction. We discovered that IBL would probably suit me really well. I had doubts at first; economics was not my strongest area. But, I discovered how much I like the international business world. Interacting with international people and using products and services in a different way for new markets: yes, I found my place.” “I’m also very enthusiastic about the intercultural character of the programme. You learn to do business with for instance the Dutch, Germans, Russians and Asians. I’m especially interested in the latter; I would love to work in Asia. It is important to get to know cultures and habits. It is often the tiniest details you need to know when you interact with people. In a business relationship, that tiny detail might just convince them to take that final step.”
PRESENTATION In the third period you will develop an international product; a commercial trademission. Next to researching the (local) trade markets and the local rules and regulations, the product also needs to seamlessly fit with the environment or the local culture. The fourth period is concluded with your own business plan, to showcase what you have learned during the year. This project is called “Lions Den”.

Exporting products: the second year will truly broaden your horizon. What do you encounter when a new product is brought to a foreign market? All possibilities will be explored by using actual cases.
Export Communications plan People, planet, profit or sustainable business
Intercultural Awareness
INNOVATE! The first year is divided into four periods. The first period focuses on marketing and intercultural communication. The second period concentrates on the innovation of existing products and how these products can be brought to the market. You will look into the pricing and profitability of products, and the localization of the potential market: It is all up to you!
“I was very homesick in the beginning, but as you move on, studying becomes easier. You get to know yourself better too and discover your own possibilities. I would love to do something with art & culture in Berlin. This programme offers the possibilities to do just that.”

In the third year you will live from your suitcase for the most part. Everything you have learned so far will be put into practice, preferably abroad. Exciting? Yes, and this adventure will also increase your opportunities on the labour market after graduation.
Companies about International Business and Languages students
PERSONALIZE YOUR PROGRAMME Choose a minor abroad that matches your needs and aligns the programme with what lies ahead in your future. You can, for example, focus on international trade laws or cross cultural communication, but you can also broaden your interests. For example, many students follow a minor about the use of social media in marketing or online marketing research.

INTERNSHIP In the third year you will do a six-month internship and you’ll follow a minor, both for six months. You will follow your minor preferably abroad, but in any case at an international company. How about a Grand Tour at one of Stenden’s campuses sites in Indonesia, Thailand, Qatar or South Africa? And of course it is also possible to study at one of the many universities from Stenden’s worldwide network in Europe, USA, Asia or Australia.
“Holland Trading Group and Stenden’s IBL have a long-lasting history together. For years Stenden students have successfully performed an internship in our company. Previous interns have amongst others prepared visits to international trade fairs and scanned potential export markets for our company by writing an export plan.”

Year 3
Studying abroad brings a second foreign language to a higher level in a much shorter time. IBL students follow their minor and do their internship and final assignment in countries that speak one of the two modern foreign languages they are studying (next to English). For example, a student who studied German and Spanish will therefore go to Germany or a Spanish speaking country to study or to do their internship abroad.
Research is an important component of the programme. Stenden students gain and master research skills step by step, throughout the programme. The IBL examiners have a large network. They work together with foreign universities and lectorates from fellow HBO institutions. For example; we have a key partnership with the University of Applied Sciences Haaga Helia in Finland. You can use this network for your research.
You will work on real life cases for a client with fellow students at the beginning of the fourth year. Different groups will simultaneously take on the challenge of finding the best solution. Based on the presentation, the contractor will choose the best solution for his case. This is your chance to stand out! FINAL RESEARCH: MAKE YOUR MARK AT AN INTERNATIONAL COMPANY Final research must be done at an international company. Students will state their own cases and show they can set up decent research to support their strategic advice. This is your chance to show that you are worth the title Bachelor of Business Administration.
IBL focuses on applying gained knowledge in a practical way. This not only makes the programme fascinating and exciting, it also accumulates knowledge and sharpens skills. Students will be able to carry out valid and reliable research in the final year and ultimately become that interesting candidate for the international labour market.
The final assignment is an excellent opportunity to make your mark. Several students now work at the company where they did their final assignment. For example, Mercedes was willing to wait for our student to obtain his master’s degree before they invited him to New York, and a student who did his market research for Austrian pop soda in Germany is now working as a product manager at that pop soda factory!

As an International Business & Languages graduate you are equipped to play a leading role in a company’s international activities in the preparatory, planning and implementation phases. You can also find work with an international non-profit organization at various management levels. Positions you can think of are:
International internship

“I learned a lot during my internship at the local government organisation in Guadalajara, Mexico. Working for the foreign affairs department, I set up a distribution centre in Rotterdam for Mexican companies. It demanded considerable initiative and determination and I grew tremendously as a person.”
ANNAH GRAVEL
“You can be anything you want to be.” “The remarkable thing about the IBL programme is that it is broad and you can combine anything and everything you have learned and experienced. I call it ‘360°-learning’.” “I was educated as a midwife and had no experience with business. I decided to do IBL because I was ready for a new challenge. Next semester, I will follow an entrepreneurship minor in South Africa where I hope to use my experience as a midwife in the community projects. It is very exciting to experience other ideas and cultures. It would be wonderful if I could offer women anywhere in the world something new and purposeful with my gained expertise.“

“A great mix of school, humanitarian work and free time.” “Daily rhythm in South Africa is considerably different from what we are used to; you get up really early and go to school to have breakfast in the canteen, which really is the central place of the campus. Then you follow lessons and have lunch outside. Because outside is where South African life takes place.” “There are classes again in the afternoon, but you can also go to the township to help with activities and development projects that are managed by students. For example, we organised activities for children, which is rewarding work because these people really have very little. Many children can’t go to school and I even saw them play on a garbage dump.” “I did the minor entrepreneurship because I’m interesting in advising entrepreneurs and businesses. In South Africa, I had the opportunity to work with people from a totally different background. It was the perfect combination of academic development and humanitarian work. I really enjoyed working in the township of Port Alfred. The people I met and the experiences I gained still influence my life today.”

The Netherlands
A world of opportunities
The Netherlands – or Holland – has been open to people of non-Dutch origin for a long time. Today it is home to over 190 different nationalities and hence one of the most international countries in the world. It is a safe country by international standards, with low levels of violence and street crime. Dutch society is relatively non-hierarchical, for example, teachers tend to be very accessible and truly interactive with their students – which can help students really get the most of their studies. Last but not least, almost everyone in the Netherlands speaks English!
Imagine how amazing it would be to broaden your horizon not only by studying in the Netherlands but also to have the possibility to study in South Africa, Qatar, Thailand, Bali, Chile, USA, Finland, Spain or many other destinations. International Business and Languages offers you the opportunity to study outside of the Netherlands. Interested in the Grand Tour, Exchange or an intership abroad? It is up to you to make that international experience happen! Explore the World of Opportunities offered by Stenden’s Grand Tour, exchange programmes and possibilities for internships abroad.
ANGELA DENKHAUS, IBL STUDENT, FROM GERMANY
Experiencing Asia “International Relations teaches you to understand the diplomatic, political and economic world from another point of view. It also teaches you how to adapt to living in a South East Asian country, how to deal with customs, regulations, behaviours and traditions. And learn the basics of a completely different language. In other words, an excellent opportunity to get out of your comfort zone.” “My personal highlight was to experience the Thai culture. The festivals, the food, the language, the traditions, everything is just so different from everything I’d ever known in Europe. I loved the travelling, seeing the beautiful country and meeting the Thai people. I noticed that the differences between being a tourist and actually living in the country are immense! People treat you totally different when you speak the language a little, whether you just want to buy some fresh fruits or give directions to a cab driver.”
Grand Tour The Grand Tour offers you the possibility to study at our international campuses in the Netherlands, South Africa, Qatar, Indonesia and Thailand. www.stenden.com/grandtour. With an exchange programme you have the opportunity to take courses offered at a foreign university and learn from different professors (www.stenden.com/exchange). An internship abroad allows you to immerse yourself in a different culture while learning about the business in which you will have your career.
