Introduction “International Business and Languages is a commercial programme with a strong focus on intercultural communication. This is of great importance to be successful in business in an international industry. Our students are known to be entrepreneurial and adventurous, and they love to spread their wings.” “The programme challenges you to discover the world. You will gain a solid commercial-economic foundation, which you can use anywhere in Europe or in the world. You will spend one semester studying abroad, either at one of Stenden’s campus sites in Bali, South Africa, Qatar or Thailand, or at a partner university in another country. “The research assignments are also mainly done outside of the Netherlands or are set up in an international context. For example, a student from the IBL programme did research for an Australian company on how to bring sheep’s wool to the Scandinavian market.” “IBL offers you maximum freedom to realise your ambitions, both during the programme and after graduation. Employers are very interested in IBL graduates because they are eager to discover and conquer new markets. They especially appreciate the graduates’ cultural sensitivity and entrepreneurial attitude.” GERRY GEITZ DEAN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS AND LANGUAGES

FROM RUSSIA DIANA KOSTYUK
“The advantage of Problem-based Learning is that you can apply all of your knowledge. I can learn from my fellow students, share experiences and just have a good time solving the cases. For me, PBL means creativity, communication, learning and experiencing.”
Studying at Stenden PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
Unleashing the potential of each student - that is our mission at Stenden University of Applied Sciences. At Stenden you receive personal support and a myriad of opportunities to work on your personal development and expand your horizons. We offer you a programme that stimulates inquisitive and inquiring minds. During your studies you will develop three skills in particular that help you make a difference: › Understanding tomorrow’s challenges › Intercultural skills and the ability to operate in an international environment › Cooperating and creating with others. PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING: THE KEY ELEMENT
Problem-based Learning (PBL) is one of the key elements of Stenden’s education and is quite different from traditional teaching. It takes a little time to get used to, but after the first few sessions, students are always enthusiastic about this way of learning. Small groups of students meet twice a week to work together. Graduates acknowledge the value of PBL during their internship and career. Apart from PBL, lectures and workshops are offered as supporting classes for students. LEARN IN PROJECTS
Each study year at Stenden consists of four periods of nine weeks. During each period or module you will work on a theme with a close link to the real world. You will be introduced to all aspects of the theme through different subjects. These subjects therefore change per module, depending on the knowledge and skills you need for a certain theme. FROM ITALY (BORN IN ROMANIA)
At the start of the programme, you are assigned a coach who will personally guide you during the entire programme and will help you to think critically about yourself, your way of learning and your future career.

From the first year, the IBL programme focuses on both the theoretical and practical aspects of international trade. All aspects of international trade are explored, starting with an idea for a product or service and ending with marketing the product and offering it to the end user.
1
Year 1 Business Cross Cultural Communication/ Intercultural Awareness Languages
Intercultural Awareness In the IBL programme, intercultural communication is about more than just studying languages. The language of instruction is English and students also choose a second language in the first year and a third modern foreign language in the second year. They can choose from French, German, Spanish and Dutch (for non-Dutch students). The language classes provide you with language skills, but to be able to communicate effectively you need more than just the language. Cultural differences influence many phases in the communication process, not only between people, but also within organisations (e.g. governments, companies, schools). Therefore, Intercultural Competence is important throughout the programme. Of course you will also gain extensive experience while working in an international learning environment and studying with peers from around the world. Studying three modern languages is an important part of the IBL programme, although International Business is the major common thread throughout the programme. To be successful in international business you will need excellent skills in Intercultural Communication, which involves communicating, learning and practising all aspects of international business in an international environment.
FROM ITALY (BORN IN ROMANIA) NORA DIMACHE
“Well prepared for my future.” “I did economics and languages in high school. International Business and Languages was a logical next step. It seemed convenient to choose a programme with subjects I already knew a little about and that I knew would increase my chances on the labour market.”
INNOVATE! The first year is divided into four periods. The first period focuses on marketing and intercultural communication. The second period concentrates on researching investment opportunities for a medium-sized Dutch trade and investment company in different parts of the world. You and your group will formulate the relevant policy questions that will influence the investment decisions for a chosen sector.
“I was very homesick in the beginning, but as you move on, studying becomes easier. You get to know yourself better too and discover your own possibilities. I would love to do something with art & culture in Berlin. This programme offers the possibility of doing just that.”

Exporting products: the second year will truly broaden your horizons. What do you encounter when a new product is brought to a foreign market? All possibilities will be explored by using actual cases.
Export Communication plan People, planet, profit or sustainable business
International trade You will have the opportunity to investigate the possibilities of exporting marshmallows, for example, to an East European country. With the information and experiences you have acquired, you will have the tools to write an export plan, covering the pricing, the safe transport of products and money and the preparation of all necessary customs forms. In the third block, Hooghoudt, a liquor producer, will visit the campus and you will visit Hooghoudt. This experience will be concluded with a communication plan for Hooghoudt, which you will present to a manager of the company. How do you manage your customer relationships and international sales?

FROM ITALY EMMANUELE LORO
“I found my place.” “I studied International Business and Languages and graduated in 2015. I have spent most of my life travelling and living in different countries, for example, in Uganda, where I did an International Baccalaureate, and in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Spain and Italy. I had always wanted to be an international businessman and that brought me to Stenden University in Emmen - an international school with affordable courses in English. Two months after I graduated I found a job in a logistics company whose operations are spread over several countries in Africa. I am now at the same company in Bangui in the Central African Republic where I am Director of Operations for Central African Transport SARL. The IBL course definitely helped me to become the person I am today. Thanks to the business skills, I am more successful in what I do, and the language learning has helped me to master the French I need in this country. My advice to new students is: give your best and don’t be scared of new challenges. Meet people and establish as many connections as you can – your network plays an important role in business. And finally, learn as many languages as you can – languages are the basis of success in business all over the world.”

In the third year you will be living out of your suitcase for the most part. Everything you have learned so far will be put into practice, preferably abroad. Exciting? Yes, and this adventure will also increase your opportunities in the labour market after graduation.
INTERNSHIP In the third year you will do an internship and study abroad, both for a semester. You will follow your minor preferably abroad, but in any case at an international company. How about a Grand Tour at one of Stenden’s campuses in Indonesia, Thailand, Qatar or South Africa? And of course it is also possible to study at one of the many universities from Stenden’s worldwide network in Europe, the USA, Asia or Australia.
Long-standing history together “Holland Trading Group and Stenden’s IBL have a long-standing history together. For years Stenden students have successfully performed an internship in our company. Among other things, previous interns have prepared visits to international trade fairs and scanned potential export markets for our company by writing export plans.”
PERSONALISE YOUR PROGRAMME Choose a study programme abroad that matches your needs and align this with your ambitions for the future. For example, you can focus on international trade law or intercultural communication, but you can also broaden your interests. Many students follow a minor about the use of social media in marketing or online market research.

Year 4: In the fourth year you use the experience you have gained during the internship to show that you can work as a professional in international trade. This year, you can make your mark in challenging assignments with different employers.

Finalising your study
Research Options
You will work on real life cases for a client with fellow students at the beginning of the fourth year. Different groups will simultaneously take on the challenge of finding the best solution. Based on the presentation, the commissioner will choose the best export plan for the case. This is your chance to stand out!
Research is an important component of the pro gramme. Stenden students gain and master research skills step by step, throughout the programme. The IBL examiners have a large network. They work together with foreign universities and lectorates from partner universities. For example, we have a key partnership with the Haaga Helia University of Applied Sciences in Finland. You can use this network for your research.
FINAL RESEARCH: You will do your graduation project for an international company. Students will state their own cases and demonstrate that they can carry out adequate research to support their strategic advice. This is your chance to show that you are worthy of the title Bachelor of Business Administration.
IBL focuses on applying knowledge in a practical way. This doesn’t only make the programme fascinating and exciting, it also means that students will accumulate knowledge and sharpen their skills. Students will be able to carry out valid and reliable research in the final year and ultimately become interesting candidates for the international labour market.
The graduation project is an excellent opportunity to make your mark. Several students now work at the company where they did their final assignment. For example, Mercedes was willing to wait for one of our students to obtain his Master’s degree before they invited him to New York, and a student who did his market research for Austrian soda in Germany is now working as a product manager at that soda factory!

“You can be anything you want to be.” “The remarkable thing about the IBL programme is that it is broad and you can combine anything and everything you have learned and experienced. I call it ‘360°-learning’.” “I was educated as a midwife and had no experience with business. I decided to do IBL because I was ready for a new challenge. Next semester, I will follow an entrepreneurship minor in South Africa where I hope to use my experience as a midwife in the community projects. It is very exciting to experience other ideas and cultures. It would be wonderful if I could offer women anywhere in the world something new and purposeful with my expertise.” 8

ANNABELLA BOSMA, ALUMNA IBL
“I was attracted by the combination of languages and economic subjects in this programme at Stenden but what really made me enthusiastic was the chance to study and work with people from other cultures and to travel. I did all of these things and had a great time in Emmen. It is quite a small campus but that only made me feel more at home there. In the elective semester I travelled to Bali and Thailand – that was a wonderful experience! I did my internship at Wagenaar BV, a trading company in dairy ingredients for the animal feed and human food industries and I still work there today. I am responsible for purchasing and sales and have a lot to do with international clients. I am convinced that my studies have given me the confidence and skills to do this job. We learnt that building good relationships with clients is just as important as product knowledge and I can vouch for that. It’s very important in my job.”

The Netherlands The Netherlands – or Holland – has been open to people of non-Dutch origin for a long time. Today it is home to over 190 different nationalities and hence one of the most international countries in the world. It is a safe country by international standards, with low levels of violence and street crime. Dutch society is relatively non-hierarchical. For example, teachers tend to be very accessible and truly interactive with their students, which can help students really get the most out of their studies. Last but not least, almost everyone in the Netherlands speaks English!

ANGELA DENKHAUS, IBL STUDENT, FROM GERMANY
Experiencing Asia “International Relations teaches you to understand the diplomatic, political and economic world from another point of view. It also teaches you how to adapt to living in a South East Asian country, how to deal with customs, regulations, behaviours and traditions, and learn the basics of a completely different language. In other words, it’s an excellent opportunity to get out of your comfort zone.” “My personal highlight was experiencing the Thai culture. The festivals, the food, the language, the traditions, everything is just so different from everything I’d ever known in Europe. I loved travelling, seeing the beautiful country and meeting the Thai people. I noticed that the differences between being a tourist and actually living in the country are immense! People treat you very differently when you speak the language a little, whether you just want to buy some fresh fruit or give directions to a cab driver.”
Grand Tour The Grand Tour offers you the possibility of studying at our international campuses in the Netherlands, South Africa, Qatar, Indonesia and Thailand (www.stenden.com/grandtour).
