“PBL has helped me develop into what I believe to be a hospitality professional, which I know can be developed in everyone, using this innovative way of learning.”
PROBLEM BASED LEARNING: THE KEY ELEMENT
Problem Based Learning (PBL) is one of the key elements of Stenden’s education and it is quite different from traditional teaching. Next to PBL theory classes and workshops are offered as supporting classes for students. It takes a little time getting used to it, but after the first few sessions, students are always enthusiastic about this way of learning. Students meet twice a week in groups of 12 to 15 and work together to systemically solve cases and problems reflecting real-life situations. Graduates acknowledge the value of PBL during internship and career. LEARN PER THEME
Each study year at Stenden has four blocks of ten weeks. You work on one theme per block, in which practice is the focus. You will be introduced to all aspects of the theme in different subjects. The subjects therefore change per block, depending on the knowledge and skills you need for a certain theme. The block is concluded with a project, in which all ‘building blocks’ are integrated. PERSONAL COACHING
A coach wil be assigned to you at the start of the programme. This coach will guide you personally during the entire programme and will help you think critically about yourself, your way of learning and your future career. There will always be someone who knows you, advises you and helps you further. WHY STENDEN HOTEL MANAGEMENT SCHOOL?
› Stenden is the largest hotel management programme in Europe and one of the largest in the world! › IHM places an emphasis on Real World Learning, and is the only hotel school in The Netherlands to have this officially recognized as a distinctive feature by the NVAO (Dutch Flemish Accreditation Authority). › Stenden’s own 4* Stenden Hotel is a commercial hotel business which is visited by national and international business and leisure guests for overnight stays, conferences, meetings and F&B. › Our internship office, which has excellent industry connections and enjoys a global reputation, prepares paid management placements worldwide in countries such as the US, Australia, UK and lots of other European and Asian countries. › Stenden Hotel Management School is the first hotel school in The Netherlands to be accredited by the prestigious Institute of Hospitality in the UK. The International Centre of Excellence in Tourism and Hospitality Education also accredited Stenden Hotel Management School as the second institution in Europe with their outstanding programmes. › A world of opportunities: Students can follow part of the major or the specialization minor at one of Stenden’s International Branch Campus sites (IBCs) in Qatar, Indonesia, Thailand and South Africa.
FROM ST. MAARTEN DIPTI MAHTANI
“PBL encourages students to think outside of the box. During PBL sessions, students are challenged to think critically about a given task and they are triggered to share their perspectives on topics. This not only inspires students to step off the beaten path; they also learn from each other.”

The first year will be an introduction to the hospitality industry at operational level. Through subjects such as Law, Marketing, Human Resource Management and Finance students will gain insight into the organisational structures of the hospitality industry. Managing customer expectations will also be an important part of year one.
Year 1 Introduction to the hospitality industry
A solid foundation The first year lays down a solid foundation for the rest of the programme. Working on actual cases will be the common thread throughout your studies. The introduction week already exposes students to this challenging way of learning that makes studying at Stenden so unique. During one of the four study periods (modules) of year one, you will gain professional experience at the Stenden Hotel, under the supervision of senior students and practical instructors . INTERCULTURAL AWARENESS Working in the (international) hospitality industry means working with people from all over the world: our programme is dedicated to understanding international cultures and behaviours and how to interact and succeed in a professional international environment.
IHM Student Center The IHM Student Center, which is run by students, offers a helping hand to all students during the study preparation period. The Student Center is connected with each new student from the point where they sign up for the education till the point where they complete the first year. Their office is open during the summer months and your questions are answered on a daily basis. Upon arrival and for the first study period, you will also get host students introducing you to Stenden and the student city.
CAREER DEVELOPMENT The International Hospitality Management programme not only stretches the importance of learning the trade, but also focuses on unleashing the full potential of students during the programme and afterwards. Stenden actively provides career development through workshops and individual guidance to help students reach their study objectives, understand their career possibilities and make their choices. At the start of your study a personal career coach will be appointed to you. This coach will accompany you during your study and will advise you with your personal development.

Year 2 International Business Communication Supervising daily operations Virtual hotels Tactical insight
The second year is the beginning of the main phase of the programme. This year focuses on the tactical management insights. Students will again have the opportunity to work at the Stenden Hotel, but this year as a supervisor managing the first year students. In addition you will run a virtual hotel together with a classmate.
Become a supervisor In the second year you will be fully immersed into the work field: from learning to analyse the business itself and the environment to being able to make the right choices as a supervisor. The cases you work on with your fellow students will show your level of thinking and acting. The second year also concentrates on the language skills needed for the international hospitality business: English and a second foreign language such as Spanish, French or German. The offer might be expanded in the future. FROM THE NETHERLANDS
This year, you will run a virtual hotel together with a classmate and work on the improvement of this hotel in workshops. These simulations will teach you what the key indicators are for the success of your hotel, and which indicators have the most influence. You will use these to turn your business into a profitable one. LEARNING COMPANY: STENDEN HOTEL Stenden has several in-house learning companies. These are professional organisations where students can gain experience from practice, under the guidance of professionals. Our programme has, for example, its own Stenden Hotel. National and international visitors in Leeuwarden enjoy staying here, whether it is for business or pleasure. Next to the 28 comfortable rooms and five meeting rooms, this four star hotel also has a restaurant, and an events office. The canteen and Stenden café are also part of the in-house learning facilities.
ANNE VAN AALST
“The Grand Tour offers the possibility to follow a part of the study in another part of the world. I will conclude my third year at Stenden on Bali. Studying on Bali, isn’t that fantastic?”
The International Hospitality Management programme could be compared to a fast career in the hospitality industry: from operational employee in the first year to to supervisor in the second year and manager in the third year. In the third year, students will be in charge of one of the departments of the hotel, for instance Food & Beverage, Sales & Marketing, Front Office, Finance or HRM. At the end of the programme students will receive a ‘talent passport’, which includes an overview of their developments, qualities and talents. ASSOCIATE DEGREE Students can also choose to enroll in the two year Associate Degree programme offered at our campuses in Leeuwarden and Emmen. Students of the Associate Degree programme follow the first two years of the Bachelor programme and finish their study with a research project at the end of year two, instead of the module ‘International Business Communication’. These years are concluded with an Associate Degree. Students can choose to continue studying for another two years and obtain their Bachelor Degree.

In the third year, students gain their first management experience at the Stenden Hotel. This year also prepares them for their internship and the actual next step into the professional world. The whole programme now switches to a strategic level.
Research options
There are two strategic modules – your majors – and two specialization modules (minors) this year. Together with fellow students you will research the internal or external strategy of a company. Students have, for example, previously researched the possibilities of crowd funding for a new food & beverage company. SPECIALISATION You can stay in Leeuwarden for your minors, but many students choose a Grand Tour and follow the specialization modules (minors) at one of the International Campus Sites of Stenden in Qatar, Thailand, South Africa or Indonesia. Others might follow an exchange programme at one of the more than a hundred universities from Stenden’s worldwide network. The minor Cruise Management is popular among hospitality students because many students do their internship on a cruise ship and find a job in this industry after they graduate.
ACADEMY OF INTERNATIONAL HOSPITALITY RESEARCH (STENDEN AIHR) Stenden AIHR is one of the world’s leading hospitality research academies. Its national and international researchers are dedicated to conduct studies on important aspects of hospitality, aiming to impact the professional industry and contribute to improve hospitality education.
You can already specialize during the minor. Next to Cruise Management, students can choose: › Gastronomy › Food & Beverage Management › Humanitarian Management › Wildlife Management › Lodge Management › Event Management › Rooms Division Management › International Relations › Spa and Health Business Concepts › Spa Business Strategy › Marketing & Management in Asia › Advanced Wine Management › and many more
CENTER OF EXPERTISE IN LEISURE, TOURISM & HOSPITALITY (CELTH) To guarentee the quality of research and guidance, the International Hospitality programme is partner of the Centre of Expertise in Leisure, Tourism & Hospitality (CELTH). Stenden also works together closely with NHTV Breda University and HZ University of Applied Sciences.
MANAGEMENT This year, you will be in charge of second year students for five weeks and be responsible for the entire department for example chair staff meetings. Many students think this is the best part of the whole programme, and this management experience also gives you a head start on the labour market.
Together with NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences, HZ University of Applied Sciences, Stenden got appointed by the Ministery of Economic Affairs and Education as CELTH to improve cooperation and knowledge transfer with the industry.

Research plays an important part within the International Hospitality Management programme. From the first year students are introduced to the different aspects of research. In the second year they will learn the tools to set up applied research and use different methods. Next to that, they are introduced to the world of data analysis. In the third year a professional study is carried out in one of the fifteen areas, such as hospitality marketing, HRM studies or multicultural studies in hospitality. Some students do research for our own research unit, the Stenden Academy of International Hospitality Research (Stenden AIHR). The best studies are nominated for publication in a scientific journal for hospitality.

The final year of the programme is mainly focused on the internship. Next to the ten months of valuable work experience at the internship company, you will also do research for your final dissertation which you will complete during this internship.
Internship Work experience Final Dissertation
Start up your professional career The International Hospitality Management programme has the largest internship office at Stenden. This is no coincidence: the educational programme and its students have a good reputation worldwide, and new companies are eager to sign on as learning companies. The internship office has an online database where you can find information about more than six hundred highquality learning companies and positions spread around the world, including Australia, the United States and Great Britain. Students can also suggest their own internship company, the programme will assess if this company meets the standards. PLACEMENT COACH Deciding on the internship, which company, region or position, can be challenging. Stenden has placement coaches who prepare students to make the right choice. There are many possibilities for International Hospitality Management students: from the Food & Beverage and Sales department to Banqueting, and from HRM and Duty Management to Assistant General Management. In all cases, students have the chance to develop towards a position at management level.
Companies about Hospitality students
DISSERTATION Together with the internship company students will discuss what kind of research they will be doing. All knowledge and experience gained in the past three years now comes together: the final step before developing into a hospitality professional at management level. If students succeed in this phase they will have a bright future ahead of them.
“We started working in partnership with Stenden Hotel Management School in 2013. We are now working on bringing our 9th IHM trainee on board. In my experience Stenden has always sent us highly intelligent, motivated and engaged trainees. Our IHM trainees are able to work well independently and in teams. They also get involved and participate in activities both at work and off site. Since the introduction of IHM students to our team, we have found them to be responsible and dependable, taking on additional responsibility whenever they are given the opportunity. I would highly recommend IHM graduates and partnering with Stenden Hotel Management School for all Management Trainee Programs.”

“During this module we visited large hotels to observe their daily business. Together with a friend, we rode our scooters every weekend to check out Bali. We visited temples, travelled with a boat to the magical Gili Islands, saw active volcanoes and learned the Balinese language. On top of that, we swam in waterfalls, saw many magical and deserted beaches and rode the waves. This is how I experienced the culture and life of the relaxed and friendly Balinese people. The Stenden campus was small, but modern. The people on the campus are very kind, generous, helpful and hospitable.”

The Netherlands The Netherlands – or Holland – has been open to people of non-Dutch origin for a long time. Today it is home to over 190 different nationalities and hence one of the most international countries in the world. It is a safe country by international standards, with low levels of violence and street crime. Dutch society is relatively non-hierarchical, for example, teachers tend to be very accessible and truly interactive with their students – which can help students really get the most of their studies. Last but not least, almost everyone in the Netherlands speaks English!
