Introduction “Are you aiming for an international career? Then International Logistics Management is an excellent choice, because this programme literally offers you the world. During four years, our programme prepares you for the international dynamic world of logistics to ultimately become an independent and practice-oriented manager who can work anywhere in the world” “Many people do not realize that logistics management is much more than organising transport by road, water or air. In addition to the so-called physical distribution, students also learn how to streamline production processes in theory and in practice. Our extensive network with the business world makes this possible. The programme keeps close contact with (international) companies, so that everything learned and practiced is in line with the needs of the market. For this reason, not just students, but also employers and monitoring institutions appreciate the programme. There is a reason why our programme belongs to the top of the Logistics and Economics programmes in the Netherlands, according to the Keuzegids Hoger Onderwijs 2013 [Choice Guide Higher Education 2013].” “The Netherlands is a top country when it comes to logistics. To keep our international directing role, we continuously develop this industry and therefore also our programme at Stenden. For example, we pay extra attention to our Feed & Food, Green Logistics and Service programmes in Emmen. These themes could be very important to you as a Logistics Manager. We are proud to say that the International Logistics Management programme at Stenden is an excellent preparation for your international career in logistics” KEES ELBERS ACADEMIC DEAN SCHOOL OF BUSINESS

Studying at Stenden PROBLEM BASED LEARNING: THE KEY ELEMENT

Problem Based Learning (PBL) is one of the key elements of Stenden’s education and it is quite different from traditional teaching. Next to PBL theory classes and workshops are offered as supporting classes for students. It takes a little time getting used to it, but after the first few sessions, students are always enthusiastic about this way of learning. Students meet twice a week in groups of 12 to 15 and work together to systemically solve cases and problems reflecting real-life situations. Graduates acknowledge the value of PBL during internship and career. LEARN PER THEME

Each study year at Stenden has four blocks of ten weeks. You work on one theme per block, in which practice is the focus. You will be introduced to all aspects of the theme in different subjects. The subjects therefore change per block, depending on the knowledge and skills you need for a certain theme. The block is concluded with a project, in which all ‘building blocks’ are integrated. PERSONAL COACHING

A coach wil be assigned to you at the start of the programme. This coach will guide you personally during the entire programme and will help you think critically about yourself, your way of learning and your future career. There will always be someone who knows you, advises you and helps you further.

FROM ST. MAARTEN FROM ZIMBABWE

FARAI SIBANDA

“I have experienced PBL as a very useful learning process. It teaches you to take initiative, solve problems efficiently and effectively, while gathering knowledge.” 3

The International Logistics Management programme has two phases: the propaedeutic phase and the main phase. The propaedeutic phase introduces students to the logistic processes of a company. Along with this, they develop skills that are needed to become a logistics manager. At the end of that year students will have reached the level of an operational logistics professional.

Year 1 Organisations Operational Self-management

A solid foundation A VERSATILE WORLD The propaedeutic year introduces you to the dynamic world of logistics; from physical distribution to production logistics. The programme concentrates on the supply chain of a company, using four themes: the organisation, the client, the process and the business. Subjects such as Logistics & Economics, Warehousing & Transport and Materials Management provide insight into the logistic processes of a company. Other subjects will introduce you to the general tasks of organisations, such as Marketing and Management. Writing a business plan is an integrated part of the programme.

FROM CHINA

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT The first year of the programme is also dedicated to developing very important management and (intercultural) communication skills. Communication skills are obviously very important for a manager in the international world of logistics. in addition, students take a self-management course that focuses on personal development and growth.

YANH MINGMING

“ILM is more than gaining professional logistics knowledge, it also focuses on all the different aspects of business and personal career planning. It is extremely valuable for further development and the choices you will make along the road. Studying and living in Emmen is great. I enjoy the quiet and peaceful environment in Emmen and I make friends with kindhearted people who are also eager to learn something new. Stenden offers me a professional solid foundation and a great international study environment.”

Year 2

The main phase of the programme starts in the second year: you will broaden your orientation and learn to apply your knowledge to solve complex logistical cases. Teamwork will also be part of the programme this year, this is where the different disciplines come together. The goal is to obtain the level of an assistant logistics manager at the end of the second year.

Sustainability International business

Main phase CLEVER AND SUCCESSFUL ORGANISATION This year, you will go deeper into the subjects that you were introduced to in the first year. Teamwork and delving further into actual cases are important ingredients. One of these cases will be to outline the logistic process of a product, starting with raw materials. Interested in organising epic or sizeable events? The programme will take you through all the disciplines to make sure the event is efficiently organised and that it becomes a success. GREEN LOGISTICS Sustainability is an important ingredient for a better world, and also an important theme for Stenden. Sustainable Logistics teaches you everything you need to know about sustainability in the logistics industry, and the purpose of working in a bio-based economy. The third module focuses on the logistic chain where you will, for example, find out more about E-logistics: managing information streams with ICT. The year is concluded with an exploration of the international market and worldwide logistical processes.

FROM INDONESIA IQHAL ADIANSYAH

“Like so many kids, I wanted to become a pilot. Although I had no idea what it meant. My dad sent me to the Netherlands to study. He is an entrepreneur and has a business in house hold appliances on Sumatra. Following the ILM programme, I now realize that his business could be a whole lot more professional, both in efficiency and in personnel policies. My dream is to develop good quality products and, taking everything I learned aboard, I might be able to exploit a palm oil plantation someday.”

WORKING IN THE PROFESSIONAL FIELD The programme works together with many organisations. For this reason, students can work on actual cases from the work field and apply the obtained skills and knowledge right away. Students are responsible for and in charge of the practice assignments during the programme. This is how they develop a curious and pro-active attitude. The gained knowledge and actual experience provide a solid foundation for your final internship and thesis in the fourth year.

The real work starts in the third year with an internship of five months in the Netherlands or abroad. There is a minor (free choice) to be followed. You learn to manage processes and apply knowledge and skills in a professional setting. At the end of the third year you are able to carry the responsibility of a project and think at a strategic level.

Year 3 Minors International

The real work PROPER PREPARATION The third year has an international orientation, and for a good reason. Businesses have a great need for internationally oriented Logistics Managers. During the first two modules you can already choose to go abroad for a business-oriented internship: and excellent preparation for the final internship that follows in the next year. A sneak preview of possible and suitable jobs and positions in the industry is also part of the programme. FROM THE NETHERLANDS

MANY INTERNATIONAL POSSIBILITIES Stenden maintains contacts with many companies and universities in the Netherlands and abroad. This makes it easier for students to find a suitable internship, but also to study abroad. How about Thailand, Qatar, Indonesia or South Africa? Stenden has its own locations here. Students are free to choose which minors they want to follow and where. For example, students can choose to follow Purchasing Management in Groningen, Care Logistics in Zwolle, or Green Logistics in Emmen. There are endless possibilities.

ERWIN POT

“The programme offers a minor and a graduation project. In addition, you will carry out a final assignment. This means there is reasonable room to fill in a programme that meets your own needs. For instance, I chose to research green logistics because I find it interesting. There are many opportunities though, logistics is very broad.

Research options Research plays an important role within the International Logistics Management programme. Step by step you will be guided through the different aspects of research: from applied research, market research in the second year to a final research assignment at the learning company in the final year.

The Netherlands – or Holland – has been open to people of non-Dutch origin for a long time. Today it is home to over 190 different nationalities and hence one of the most international countries in the world. It is a safe country by international standards, with low levels of violence and street crime. Dutch society is relatively non-hierarchical, for example, teachers tend to be very accessible and truly interactive with their students – which can help students really get the most of their studies. Last but not least, almost everyone in the Netherlands speaks English!
