Introduction “Are you aiming for an international career? Then International Logistics Management is an excellent choice, because this programme literally offers you the world. Over four years, our programme introduces you to the international dynamic world of logistics, preparing you to ultimately become an independent and practice-oriented manager who can work anywhere in the world.” “Many people do not realise that logistics management is much more than organising transport by road, water or air. In addition to the so-called physical distribution, students also learn how to streamline production processes in theory and in practice. Our extensive network with the business world makes this possible. The programme keeps close contact with local and international companies, so that everything students learn and practice is in line with the needs of the market.” “The Netherlands is a top country when it comes to logistics. To keep our international directing role, we continuously develop this industry and therefore also our programme at Stenden. For example, we pay extra attention to our Feed & Food, Green Logistics and Service programmes in Emmen. These themes could be very important to you as a Logistics Manager. We are proud to say that the International Logistics Management programme at Stenden is an excellent preparation for your international career in logistics.” KEES ELBERS ACADEMIC DEAN SCHOOL OF BUSINESS

Studying at Stenden PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Unleashing the potential of each student - that is our mission at Stenden University of Applied Sciences. At Stenden you receive personal support and a myriad of opportunities to work on your personal development and expand your horizons. We offer you a programme that stimulates inquisitive and inquiring minds. During your studies you will develop three skills in particular that help you make a difference: › Understanding tomorrow’s challenges › Intercultural skills and the ability to operate in an international environment › Cooperating and creating with others. PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING: THE KEY ELEMENT

Problem-based Learning (PBL) is one of the key elements of Stenden’s education and is quite different from traditional teaching. It takes a little time to get used to, but after the first few sessions, students are always enthusiastic about this way of learning. Small groups of students meet twice a week to work together. Graduates acknowledge the value of PBL during their internship and career. Apart from PBL, lectures and workshops are offered as supporting classes for students. LEARN IN PROJECTS

Each study year at Stenden consists of four periods of nine weeks. During each period or module you will work on a theme with a close link to the real world. You will be introduced to all aspects of the theme through different subjects. These subjects therefore change per module, FROM depending on the knowledge and skills you need ST. MAARTEN for a certain theme. FROM ZIMBABWE

PERSONAL COACHING

At the start of the programme, you are assigned a coach who will personally guide you during the entire programme and will help you to think critically about yourself, your way of learning and your future career.

FARAI SIBANDA

“I experienced PBL as a very useful learning process. It teaches you to take the initiative and solve problems efficiently and effectively, while gathering knowledge.” 3

The International Logistics Management programme has two phases: the propaedeutic phase and the main phase. The propaedeutic phase introduces students to the logistic processes in a company. Along with this, students develop the skills necessary to become a logistics manager. At the end of that year students will have reached the level of being an operational logistics professional.

A VERSATILE WORLD The propaedeutic year introduces you to the dynamic world of logistics; from physical distribution to production logistics. The programme concentrates on the supply chain of a company using four themes: the organisation, the client, the process and the business. Subjects such as Logistics & Economics, Warehousing & Transport and Materials Management provide insight into the logistic processes of a company. Other subjects will introduce you to the general tasks of organisations, such as Marketing and Management. Writing a business plan is an integrated part of the programme.

We train our students as broad logisticians. Additionally, they are given the opportunity to specialise in sustainable logistics for a period of 6 months. During their studies they complete an internship, perform research in the field of sustainable logistics, and write their thesis for their graduation project. As well as research, our activities include performance studies and consultancy in the area of sustainable strategy and innovations.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT The first year of the programme is also dedicated to developing very important management and intercultural communication skills. Communication skills are obviously very important for a manager in the international world of logistics. In addition, students take a self-management course that focuses on personal development and growth.

FROM CHINA

YANH MINGMING

A personal coach will assist you from day one to monitor your study progress, guide your development and help you get settled in the Netherlands.

“ILM is more than gaining professional logistics knowledge, it also focuses on all the different aspects of business and personal career planning. It is extremely valuable for further development and the choices you will make down the road. Studying and living in Emmen is great. I enjoy the quiet and peaceful environment in Emmen and I have made friends with kind-hearted people who are also eager to learn something new. Stenden offers me a solid professional foundation and a great international study environment.”

Year 2

The main phase of the programme starts in the second year, in which you will broaden your orientation and learn to apply your knowledge to solve complex logistical cases. Teamwork will also be part of the programme this year, and is where the different disciplines come together. The goal is to reach the level of an assistant logistics manager at the end of the second year.

Sustainability International business

Main phase CLEVER AND SUCCESSFUL ORGANISATION This year, you will go deeper into the subjects that you were introduced to in the first year. Teamwork and delving further into actual cases are important ingredients. One of these cases will be to outline the logistical process of a product, starting with raw materials. Interested in organising epic or sizeable events? The programme will take you through all the disciplines to make sure the event is efficiently organised and successful. GREEN LOGISTICS Sustainability is an important ingredient for a better world, and also an important theme for Stenden. Sustainable Logistics teaches you everything you need to know about sustainability in the logistics industry, and the purpose of working in a bio-based economy. The third module focuses on the logistics chain where you will find out more about E-logistics, for example, managing information streams with ICT. The year concludes with an exploration of the international market and worldwide logistical processes.

FROM INDONESIA IQHAL ADIANSYAH

“Like so many kids, I wanted to become a pilot although I had no idea what it meant. My dad sent me to the Netherlands to study. He is an entrepreneur and has a business in household appliances on Sumatra. Following the ILM programme, I now realise that his business could be a whole lot more professional, both in efficiency and in personnel policies. My dream is to develop good quality products and, taking account of everything I have learned, I might be able to exploit a palm oil plantation someday.”

WORKING IN THE PROFESSIONAL FIELD The programme works together with many organisations. For this reason, students can work on actual cases from the industry and apply the obtained skills and knowledge right away. Students are responsible for and in charge of the practice assignments during the programme. This is how they develop a curious and proactive attitude. The knowledge and experience you gain provide a solid foundation for your final internship and thesis in the fourth year.

The real work starts in the third year with an internship of five months in the Netherlands or abroad. There is a minor (free choice) to be followed. You learn to manage processes and apply knowledge and skills in a professional setting. At the end of the third year you are able to carry the responsibility of a project and think at a strategic level.

Year 3 Minors International

The real work PROPER PREPARATION The third year has an international orientation, and for a good reason. Businesses have a great need for internationally oriented Logistics Managers. During the first two modules you can already choose to go abroad for a business-oriented internship: an excellent preparation for the final internship that follows in the next year. A sneak preview of possible and suitable jobs and positions in the industry is also part of the programme. MANY INTERNATIONAL POSSIBILITIES Stenden maintains contacts with many companies and universities in the Netherlands and abroad. This makes it easier for students to find a suitable internship, but also to study abroad. How about Thailand, Qatar, Indonesia or South Africa? Stenden has its own locations there. Students are free to choose which minors they want to follow and where. For example, students can choose to follow Purchasing Management in Groningen, Care Logistics in Zwolle, or Green Logistics in Emmen. There are endless possibilities.

FROM THE NETHERLANDS

ERWIN POT

“The programme offers a minor and a graduation project. In addition, you will carry out a final assignment. This means there is reasonable freedom to fill in a programme that meets your own needs. For instance, I chose to research green logistics because I find it interesting. There are many opportunities though, logistics is very broad.

Research options Research plays an important role within the International Logistics Management programme. Step by step you will be guided through the different aspects of research: from applied research, market research in the second year to a final research assignment at the learning company in the final year.

A logistics manager plans, manages or coordinates the processes in a company to keep the quality high and the costs low while ensuring that the processes run efficiently. › Planner. Makes sure orders are delivered on time and in good order. He/she is in charge of stock, monitors the transport costs, planning and contact with the transporters and the arrangements that have been made. › Export manager. Takes care of the international purchasing and selling of products, from buying the products and finding international buyers for these products, to delivering them smoothly. › Purchasing manager. A purchasing manager is responsible for the purchasing policy of a company. A sharp commercial view and knowing how to work the market are important ingredients.

FROM CHINA

JINGMOU YAN, GRADUATE ILM

“Deciding on your major is always a jump into the unknown; at least it was for me when I chose Logistics Management in Emmen. However, now that I have graduated and am working in business, I am very pleased with the knowledge I acquired and the opportunities I have been given. In fact logistics is a very interesting subject and important in China. I work in my father’s business now – a wine company with a warehouse and stores – so I apply my knowledge and skills every day. I lived in Emmen for five years and if I had to do it again I would still choose to be a student at Stenden university. When you go to another country to study you can never imagine that it will become your second homeland but that’s the way I feel about Holland. I was even asked to meet the King and Queen when they visited Stenden in 2015. It was during our Chinese New Year and I was booked to go home but I wouldn’t have missed this chance for anything. In the end I showed the invitation to the security staff at Schiphol and they helped me to board the plane at the very last minute! Classes and exams are one thing but I found that I learnt a lot from writing the dissertation. There are so many research problems to solve but if you succeed you feel you have made great progress.”

FROM THE NETHERLANDS

GEERT BRUINSMA,

“I chose this programme because of its diversity and the endless possibilities. You can work as a planner, but also in a factory to optimise processes. My work is mainly focused on implementing systems. I work a lot in Germany, but have been to France several times as well. It is an advantage that I worked with people from different cultures during my studies.” 10

“I had an incredibly good stay in Thailand. The combination of studying at the University, learning about other cultures in daily life, and the immense offering of leisure activities is something that I would not have wanted to miss.” 12

The Netherlands – or Holland – has been open to people of non-Dutch origin for a long time. Today it is home to over 190 different nationalities and hence one of the most international countries in the world. It is a safe country by international standards, with low levels of violence and street crime. Dutch society is relatively non-hierarchical. For example, teachers tend to be very accessible and truly interactive with their students, which can help students really get the most out of their studies. Last but not least, almost everyone in the Netherlands speaks English!
