Introduction “Since two years, Stenden offers Information Technology as a completely English programme. This attracts students from all over the world: from China, Brazil, Africa, the Middle East to several European countries. The programme matches the demands of the international world of IT. We have contacts with all the large international players in the work field: from IBM to Microsoft and Origin. The programme also prepares you for an international career. Besides learning how to do the programming, you are also made aware of the international sensitivity through our way of teaching and our focus on working together.
HAYYAN EBRAHEM
FROM SYRIA
“Generally, PBL encourages students to be more involved in their studies and develop skills such as communications between the group members. I was fortunate enough to gain skills that would require much more time to develop within traditional classrooms.”
PROBLEM BASED LEARNING: THE KEY ELEMENT
Problem Based Learning (PBL) is one of the key elements of Stenden’s education and it is quite different from traditional teaching. Next to PBL theory classes and workshops are offered as supporting classes for students. It takes a little time getting used to it, but after the first few sessions, students are always enthusiastic about this way of learning. Students meet twice a week in groups of 12 to 15 and work together to systemically solve cases and problems reflecting real-life situations. Graduates acknowledge the value of PBL during internship and career.
Emmen chose a couple of focal points for the programme, including safety. Our programme offers to obtain internationally recognized certificates. There is no other place where you can do ethical hacking as well as in Emmen. In addition, we offer a broad programme with all the common programming languages. But there is more. The focus is on applying IT in actual cases and making the connection between IT and the demands from companies and organisations.
LEARN PER THEME
Each study year at Stenden has four periods of nine weeks. You work on one theme per module, in which practice is the focus. You will be introduced to all aspects of the theme in different subjects. The subjects therefore change per module, depending on the knowledge and skills you need for a certain theme. The module is concluded with a project, in which all ‘modules’ are integrated.
Last year we were pronounced as the number 1 informatics programme in the Netherlands. Students appreciate above all the personal guidance from us. We think study career guidance is very important. Students are included in a community; this is how the school is set up. Many students find it a pleasant place to study.”

PERSONAL COACHING
A Study Career Coach wil be assigned to you at the start of the programme. This coach will guide you personally during the entire programme and will help you think critically about yourself, your way of learning and your future career. There will always be someone who knows you, advises you and helps you further.

“I like this way of learning. You really learn what you need and it focuses on the students individually. In Palestine you would get three credits for what you learn from a book and one for doing things, here it is the other way around.”

Right from the start of the programme, students learn to apply information technology and communicate in (international) work situations. The programme is divided into four periods – Modules – and each block is concluded with a project in which you work together with a couple of fellow students and apply everything you have learned to an actual situation.

Deepening Collaboration Project management
Stimulate creativity Information Technology students who come up with (sometimes very) creative solutions in their projects are stimulated to develop these exciting findings during the programme. Some students actually bring a new product or service to the market, or initiate a start-up. A few students, for example, developed a crowd sound for a party during PBL.
Theoretical subjects are built around projects. The first block is focused on analysis and advice, and the second is focused on realisation and maintenance. The complexity of the theory increases as the programme progresses, which results in decent knowledge of operational systems such as Windows and Linux.
AUTOMATION Students are introduced to databases: how they work, their logical structure and how to obtain the right data. As a concluding project they will assist a company in automating their help desk and present the end result to the contractor.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT Just like the first year, students are not only introduced to the technical aspects of IT, but also learn what is needed to implement projects for contractors. This is your chance to get to know different management systems: from Waterfall – a traditional approach in steps – to Scrum, a short cyclical method, whereby you continuously run tests to adjust your plan. The latter approach is applied more frequently in businesses.
NETWORKING The third module focuses on networking and Information Management. This starts with Java. At the end of this module your project group will compete with the other groups to create a robot that has to work as long as possible.
PASCAL GROSS
The second year is the beginning of the main phase of the programme. Students will gain profound knowledge of programming languages, networking and software engineering. Collaboration is a common theme throughout the entire programme: from projects to qualitative and quantitative research.
Research, deepening Java, XML, IT Service Management
During the first period, students will study the programming languages HTML and PHP, apply this knowledge and build a website according to client specifications with fellow students. Besides the technique, it is important to understand what the client wants. Our students are therefore challenged from the start: from drawing up a proper plan and showing how to manage and implement this project in an international team to conducting interviews with the contractor and organizing the project management.
FROM GERMANY
Year 2
PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE Enrich your knowledge by bringing everything you have learned into practice through projects. Regular guest lectures from business professionals will keep you up to date on the latest developments in the work field.
ADVANCED PROGRAMMING The year is concluded with a module that focuses on the advanced programming languages C# and DHTML. How you conclude this module is up to you, and this time you may create your own project. For example, previous students designed a weather station that controlled the interior lighting of an office, and others helped with the preparation of the relocation of the Emmen zoo, a project in which creativity, innovation and technique all came together.

Year 4 2 Minors Graduation dissertation
Main phase
Graduation phase
The third year starts with a six-month internship either in the Netherlands or abroad. Part of the third year consists of in-depth management subjects, such as change & knowledge management.
During the last year, students can study their favourite subjects by choosing minors. They will also be doing a six-month internship at a national or international company. A final dissertation completes the entire programme. The advantage of doing an internship as a final part of the programme is that it provides you with the opportunity to be employed after your internship.
INTERNSHIP How do you get to know your future work field? By learning from practice. For this reason there will be an internship of two periods in the third year. During this internship the knowledge and experience gained from the programme will be brought into practice.
Certified Ethical Hacking Eager to learn how perimeter defences work and how to scan and attack (virtual) networks? Want to learn more about how introducers escalate privileges and how to secure a system? Then this minor might be an excellent choice for you. CEH is a comprehensive Ethical Hacking and Information Systems Security Auditing Programme that focuses on the latest security threats, advanced attack vectors, and practical real-time demonstration of the latest hacking techniques, methodologies, tools, tricks, and security measures. Students will first gain understanding of how perimeter defences work and then move onto the scanning and attacking networks. Of course, no real network is harmed. In addition, they will learn how intruders escalate privileges and which steps they should follow to secure a system. CEH consists of several core modules designed to facilitate a comprehensive ethical hacking and penetration testing training.
MINORS IN THIS PROGRAMME › Certified Ethical Hacking › Certified Secure Programming › IT & Business
ETHICAL HACKING The third period offers students a cutting-edge programme on ethical hacking. This programme teaches students the basics of computer security: from techniques used in defending critical infrastructure to top-secret governmental networks. The programme will prepare students for the EC-Council Certified Ethical Hacking exam 312-50. The period is rewarded with a separate certificate when a student passes the exam. PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE DURING THE INTERNSHIP The Information Technology programme is ideal for those who enjoy setting up and maintaining business networks, develop games, websites or videos, or even develop software for gadgets and technical applications. The programme provides students with the knowledge and skills to become a multimedia professional, software developer, programmer or systems engineer. Information technology jobs use a universal language in a world where automation and digitalisation are increasingly important, and we speak that language. Stenden has many contacts with professional companies for internships, such as Microsoft, Google, Sara Lee, ING Group, ABN AMRO, Atos, Logica and many more.

Graduate Technical Informatics “The programme is practically oriented. You design something and immediately test it in practice. You create something new and it is exiting to discover whether it works the way you thought it would.”
Altran, as a leading consulting company in information technology engineering, is always looking for talented and well educated professionals. In our long history with Stenden University we have an excellent experience with the educational program at Stenden which fits the needs of our company very well. Some of our experts and most talented engineers have studied at Stenden and we found that our internship candidates originating from Stenden are well educated and motivated.
The programme has a lot of room for initiatives, and because Emmen is small-scale you can quickly get things done. For example, I developed a few apps and games together with a fellow student, after which Microsoft approached us. I now partly work for them. I regularly go to conferences and built up an international network. This comes in handy with my work as a teacher. It is no coincidence that I found a good job during the programme: with a diploma in informatics you are almost ensured of a good job.”
We therefore recommend Stenden University.

JOHN LE HOUEROU
“Stenden has been an excellent preparation for my future career. The Problem Based Learning method teaches practical team working and communication skills which are both so important in the working world.
Your time at Stenden starts with a mandatory introduction week in which you will register for your programme, attend introductory sessions, explore the university and have the chance to socialize with future classmates.
Studying Information Technology at Stenden has provided me with the knowledge I need to go out and learn about the things I’m passionate about. Stenden encourages students to not just achieve in school, but also outside of school. With events and clubs to join in Emmen, it can be very satisfying to study here.
Stenden has a popular buddy network, which helps new international students settle in their new environment. A buddy is a current Stenden student who - on a voluntary basis - functions as a contact person for the international student, and helps out during their first days, weeks or perhaps months at Stenden. Furthermore, our International Office employees can always be contacted for help. As an international student you’ll not be left on your own.
Thanks to the accessibility of the teachers, with a “my office is always open” attitude, it is very easy to get help with any course work or even advice beyond the programme.“
Studying at a university abroad is a very exciting time in your life. We look forward to receiving you at Stenden. We aim to make your experience as rewarding as possible and will support you throughout your time with us. Choosing where you’ll live is an important consideration when you’re off to Stenden. We have a wide range of quality accommodation available, located in the heart of our student towns. For NON-EU students housing is even guaranteed.
DANIEL ABRANTES
“Stenden taught me to communicate with people in a professional manner and improve my own learning objectives. With the Problem Based Learning approach, I was able to improve numerous skills such as working in teams and team communicating skills, which are both really important in the working world. The Information Technology programme has given me the tools I need to step into the professional world. The programme provides the basics and knowledge of several important programming languages that are used worldwide today, such as web development (Javascript, PHP, HTML/CSS, SQL) and software development (Java, C#). What makes Stenden so special is the fact that teachers are always there for you to discuss a topic, be it programming, personal issues, or anything practical. The connection between teachers and students is both formal and informal, which makes it a very pleasant learning environment.” 12
The Netherlands
A world of opportunities
The Netherlands – or Holland – has been open to people of non-Dutch origin for a long time. Today it is home to over 190 different nationalities and hence one of the most international countries in the world. It is a safe country by international standards, with low levels of violence and street crime. Dutch society is relatively non-hierarchical, for example, teachers tend to be very accessible and truly interactive with their students – which can help students really get the most of their studies. Last but not least, almost everyone in the Netherlands speaks English!
Imagine how amazing it would be to broaden your horizon not only by studying in the Netherlands but also to have the possibility to study in South Africa, Qatar, Thailand, Bali, Chile, USA, Finland, Spain or many other destinations. Information Technology offers you the opportunity to study outside of the Netherlands. Interested in the Grand Tour, Exchange or an intership abroad? It is up to you to make that international experience happen! Explore the World of Opportunities offered by Stenden’s Grand Tour, exchange programmes and possibilities for internships abroad.
Grand Tour The Grand Tour offers you the possibility to study at our international campuses in the Netherlands, South Africa, Qatar, Indonesia and Thailand. www.stenden.com/grandtour. With an exchange programme you have the opportunity to take courses offered at a foreign university and learn from different professors (www.stenden.com/exchange). An internship abroad allows you to immerse yourself in a different culture while learning about the business in which you will have your career.
