Introduction “For four years, Stenden has offered Information Technology as a completely English programme. This attracts students from all over the world, from China, Brazil, Africa and the Middle East, to several European countries. The programme matches the demands of the international IT market. We have contacts with all of the large international players in the industry, from IBM to Microsoft and Atos. The programme prepares you for an international career. As well as learning programming, you also become aware of cross cultural sensitivity through our ways of teaching and our focus on working together. Stenden has chosen a couple of focal points for the programme, including IT Security. Our programme offers Certified Ethical Hacking. No other institution offers as good a programme in ethical hacking as Stenden does in Emmen. We also offer a broad programme including all of the common programming languages. But there’s more! The focus is on applying IT in actual cases, thereby making the connection between IT and the demands from companies and organisations. Our programme is one of the top three informatics programmes offered in the Netherlands. Above all, students appreciate the personal guidance we offer them. We believe that study and career guidance is very important. The school is set up in such a way that the students are part of a community. Many students find it a pleasant place to study.” RICHARD DELGER ACADEMIC DEAN

Studying at Stenden PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Unleashing the potential of each student - that is our mission at Stenden University of Applied Sciences. At Stenden you receive personal support and a myriad of opportunities to work on your personal development and expand your horizon. We offer you a programme that stimulates inquisitive and inquiring minds. During your studies you will develop three skills in particular that help you make a difference: › Understanding tomorrow’s challenges › Intercultural skills and the ability to operate in an international environment › Cooperating and creating with others. PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING: THE KEY ELEMENT

Problem-based Learning (PBL) is one of the key elements of Stenden’s education and is quite different from traditional teaching. It takes a little time to get used to, but after the first few sessions, students are always enthusiastic about this way of learning. Small groups of students meet twice a week to work together. Graduates acknowledge the value of PBL during their internship and career. Apart from PBL, lectures and workshops are offered as supporting classes for students. LEARN IN PROJECTS

Each study year at Stenden consists of four periods of nine weeks. During each period or module you will work on a theme with a close link to the real world. You will be introduced to all aspects of the theme through different subjects. These subjects therefore change per module, depending on the knowledge and skills you need for a certain theme. PERSONAL COACHING FROM PALESTINE MAHMOUD ALJABARY

“I like this way of learning. You really learn what you need and it focuses on the students individually. In Palestine you would get three credits for what you learn from a book and one for doing things; here it is the other way around.”

At the start of the programme, you are assigned a coach who will personally guide you during the entire programme and will help you to think critically about yourself, your way of learning and your future career.

3

1

Right from the start of the programme, students learn to apply information technology and communicate in international work situations. The programme is divided into four periods (modules) and each block is concluded with a project in which small groups of students work together and apply everything they have learned to an actual situation.

Year 1 Basics Intercultural communication Website

Getting started During the first period, students will study the programming languages HTML and PHP and apply this knowledge to building a website with fellow students according to client specifications. As well as learning technique, it is also important to understand what the client wants. Our students are therefore challenged from the start to draw up a proper plan showing how to manage and implement this project in an international team, conduct interviews with the contractor and organise the project management. AUTOMATION Students are introduced to databases: how they work, their logical structure and how to obtain the right data. Their concluding project is to assist a company in automating its help desk, presenting the end result to the contractor. NETWORKING The third module focuses on networking and information management. This starts with Java. At the end of this module, all project groups will compete with each other to create a robot that works for as long as possible. ADVANCED PROGRAMMING The year concludes with a module focusing on the advanced programming language C#. How students conclude this module is up to them, they may create their own projects. For example, some previous students designed a weather station that controlled the interior lighting of an office, while others helped with preparations for the relocation of the Emmen zoo, a project in which creativity, innovation and technique all came together.

Year 2

The main phase of the programme begins in the second year. Students will gain profound knowledge of programming languages, networking and software engineering. Collaboration is a common theme throughout the entire programme, from projects to qualitative and quantitative research.

Deepening Collaboration Project management

Research, Advanced Java, XML, C#, IT Service Management

Stimulate creativity Information Technology students who come up with sometimes very creative solutions in their projects are stimulated to further develop these exciting findings during the programme. Some students actually bring a new product or service to the market, or initiate a start-up. During PBL, for example, a few students developed a crowd sound for a party.

Theoretical subjects are built around projects. The first block is focused on analysis and advice, and the second is focused on realisation and maintenance. The complexity of the theory increases as the programme progresses, which results in students gaining a good grounding in operational systems. PROJECT MANAGEMENT Just as in the first year, students are not only introduced to the technical aspects of IT, but also learn what is needed to implement projects for clients. This is your chance to get to know different management systems, from Waterfall – a traditional approach in steps – to Scrum, a short cyclical method, whereby you continuously run tests to adjust your plan. The latter approach is applied more frequently in businesses. PRACTISE, PRACTISE, PRACTISE Enrich your knowledge by bringing everything you have learned into practice by undertaking projects. Regular guest lectures from business professionals will keep you up to date on the latest developments in the industry.

Year 3 Internship Management

Main phase The third year starts with a six-month internship either in the Netherlands or abroad. Part of the third year consists of in-depth management subjects such as change & knowledge management. INTERNSHIP How do you get to know your future work field? By learning from practice. For this reason there will be an internship of two periods in the third year. During this internship the knowledge and experience gained from the programme will be brought into practice. PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE DURING THE INTERNSHIP The Information Technology programme is ideal for those who enjoy setting up and maintaining business networks, developing games, websites or videos, or even developing software for gadgets and technical applications. The programme provides students with the knowledge and skills to become a front-end developer, software developer, programmer or systems engineer. Information technology jobs use a universal language in a world where automation and digitisation are increasingly important. At Stenden, we speak that language. Stenden has contacts with many professional companies for internships, such as Microsoft, Google, Sara Lee, ING Group, ABN AMRO, Atos, Logica and many more.

Certified Ethical Hacking

Minors Graduation dissertation Ethical hacking

Eager to learn how perimeter defences work and how to scan and attack (virtual) networks? Want to learn more about how introducers escalate privileges and how to secure a system? Then this minor might be an excellent choice for you. CEH is a comprehensive ethical hacking and information systems security auditing programme that focuses on the latest security threats, advanced attack vectors, and practical real-time demonstrations of the latest hacking techniques, methodologies, tools, tricks and security measures.

Graduation phase During the last year, students can study their favourite subjects by choosing minors. They will also do a six-month internship at a national or international company. A final dissertation completes the entire programme. The advantage of doing an internship at the end of the programme is that it provides you with the opportunity to be employed after your internship.

Students will first gain an understanding of how perimeter defences work and then move onto the scanning and attacking of networks. Of course, no real network is harmed during this programme. In addition, students will learn how intruders escalate privileges and which steps they should follow to secure a system. CEH consists of several core modules designed to facilitate a comprehensive ethical hacking and penetration testing training.

Graduate Informatics “I already found a great job during the programme. I graduated from the programme in 2012 and have been teaching my previous fellow students since I graduated! I’d never thought of doing that, but it suits me well. I started during my graduation year and I’m now teaching programming and multimedia subjects. It is very inspiring to guide these motivated students.

Companies about IT students Altran, a leading consulting company in information technology engineering, is always looking for talented and well educated professionals. In our long history with Stenden University of Applied Sciences we have excellent experience with the educational program which fits the needs of our company very well. Some of our experts and most talented engineers have studied and we have found that the internship candidates originating from Stenden are well educated and motivated. We therefore recommend Stenden University.

The programme has a lot of room for initiatives, and because Emmen is small-scale you can quickly get things done. For example, I developed a few apps and games together with a fellow student, after which Microsoft approached us. I used to work for them as well. I regularly go to conferences and have built up an international network. This comes in handy with my work as a teacher. It is no coincidence that I found a good job during the programme: with a diploma in informatics you are almost ensured of a good job.” 9

Study FROM PORTUGAL

DANIEL ABRANTES

“Stenden taught me how to communicate with people in a professional manner and improve my own learning objectives. With the Problem-based Learning approach, I was able to improve upon numerous skills such as working in teams and team communication, which are both really important in the working world. The Information Technology programme has given me the tools I need to step out into the professional world. The programme provides the basic skills and knowledge in several important programming languages that are used worldwide today for things such as web development (Javascript, PHP, HTML/CSS, SQL) and software development (Java, C#). What makes Stenden so special is the fact that teachers are always there to discuss a topic with you, be it programming, personal issues, or anything practical. The connection between teachers and students is both formal and informal, which makes it a very pleasant learning environment.”

The Netherlands The Netherlands – or Holland – has been open to people of non-Dutch origin for a long time. Today it is home to over 190 different nationalities and hence one of the most international countries in the world. It is a safe country by international standards, with low levels of violence and street crime. Dutch society is relatively non-hierarchical. For example, teachers tend to be very accessible and truly interactive with their students, which can help students really get the most out of their studies. Last but not least, almost everyone in the Netherlands speaks English!
