Introduction “Choosing the International Leisure Management programme means choosing a broad programme in an international context. Students are introduced to all facets and possibilities of the leisure industry: from art, culture and sports, to events and tourism. They will know how to connect people and organisations, and how to transform ideas into experiences for diverse target groups. At the end of the programme they will have numerous opportunities at many levels in this industry. “Our programme stimulates students to think outside the box, it awakens their imagination and creativity, and at the same time they gain a solid foundation of economic knowledge. International Leisure Management is a practice-oriented programme that will help you get the best out of yourself. Curiosity and an active learning attitude are key to successful completion of the programme.” “There is a lot of freedom to shape your own programme. The Bachelor Business Administration of Leisure Management offers the possibility to develop yourself in a broad way, but you can also specialize. Of all graduates, seventy per cent finds work in the leisure industry. Others choose to use their management skills and organisation talent in another area. Employers like our graduates; they especially appreciate their solution-oriented attitude and creative approach.”

FROM BELARUS (WHITE RUSSIA) NADZEYA RAFEYENKA, 2ND YEAR INTERNATIONAL LEISURE MANAGEM ENT

“PBL gives students an opportunity to get inside every task. Not just answering question from books, but finding out what is exactly s important in this topic and what YOU want to know about it. Moreover, PBL makes you feel comfortable while speaking and creates an atmosphere you want to be part of. There are no teacher-student relationships during that class. You are the one who is in lead during the session. I really enjoy ILM. The mixture between theory and practice is very good. I feel like ILM is really preparing me for a job in the leisure industry and I enjoy it. There is a mixture of hard study and excitement in ILM. At one moment you are doing a research for management and at another moment you are in Disneyland Paris developing and researching. There are lots of opportunities opened for students. I am glad that I am a part of it.”

2

FROM THE NETHERLANDS LEO GLAS

“PBL offers students a new way of learning. It is no longer just about the theory; it is about understanding it and applying that theory. This makes it easier to understand. Furthermore, as PBL is about conveying information in a group: any missing information may have been found by your peers. This ensures that you remember a lot more than just reading theory for a lesson.”

Studying at Stenden PROBLEM BASED LEARNING: THE KEY ELEMENT

Problem Based Learning (PBL) is one of the key elements of Stenden’s education and it is quite different from traditional teaching. Next to PBL theory classes and workshops are offered as supporting classes for students. It takes a little time getting used to it, but after the first few sessions, students are always enthusiastic about this way of learning. Students meet twice a week in groups of 12 to 15 and work together to systemically solve cases and problems reflecting real-life situations. Graduates acknowledge the value of PBL during internship and career. LEARN PER THEME

Each study year at Stenden has four blocks of ten weeks. You work on one theme per block, in which practice is the focus. You will be introduced to all aspects of the theme in different subjects. The subjects therefore change per block, depending on the knowledge and skills you need for a certain theme. The block is concluded with a project, in which all ‘building blocks’ are integrated. PERSONAL COACHING

A coach wil be assigned to you at the start of the programme. This coach will guide you personally during the entire programme and will help you think critically about yourself, your way of learning and your future career. There will always be someone who knows you, advises you and helps you further.

FROM GERMANY

SVENJA STEFFENS

“Start at Stenden was a start of a new life” For me, the start at Stenden was a start of a new life: quitting the job, studying again and all that in a foreign country! It was a bit difficult to adjust to the international environment as I am typically German: punctual and strict, but after a while I got a bit more relaxed and adjusted to the Dutch culture – ‘everything will be all right’. “When I arrived in Leeuwarden, I was impressed by the atmosphere – totally different from German universities. The learning system PBL and the practice orientation were the most important criteria to choose Stenden: after having worked in an office for one and a half years I did not want to go back to didactic teaching! Besides, the school is very modern and has all the facilities you need as a student. Compared to other universities in Germany it is very colourful and bright. I feel comfortable at school! The international environment made me feel part of the group. Stenden is not only a university, it is a community.” “The tutors at Stenden are very openminded and friendly – their doors are always open if we have questions. What I really like is that each student has a study coach with whom you can talk if you have any problems with the university or the studies. I have a very personal relation with my study coach and whenever we have time we would just talk about my study progress and have a coffee together.”

Year 2

In the second year, we will have a look at the leisure market from a tactical management perspective. You will be introduced to all aspects of organising an event or project, and actually organise this event for an organisation in the leisure industry.

Concepts Cases from practice Research

Leisure projects In the second year you will mainly work on organizing your own event or project for a client in the leisure field. The following subjects will provide you with the tools needed to organise your own event or project: project management, Imagineering, concept development, social media and research are important components of the programme at this stage. Our programme underlines the importance of the sustainable side of organising events and projects by making sure we contribute to communities (community development). For this, we analyse examples of best practices such as Burning Man and Lowlands and adapt outcomes that made a difference.

FROM THE NETHERLANDS

The programme stresses the importance of creating valuable and lasting experiences for individuals, organisations and communities. This goes beyond a fun or entertaining experience, leisure management actually aims to achieve healthier lives, involving different populations, increasing social commitment and connecting different generations.

3

The third year will be a challenging year for students: responsibility and independence are important ingredients at this stage. The programme now concentrates on strategic issues and managing networks. Students will carry out a research assignment at a company in the region.

Year 3 Network Experience from practice Strategic management

Leisure Strategy and Networks

Research options Research is an important part of the Leisure Management programme. From the start in the first year students will develop research skills. The complexity of the research question increases as the programme progresses. In the third year the focus of the programme will entirely be on research.

In the third year you get more responsibility and we rely more on your independence. You follow the module Leisure Strategy and Leisure Networks. In both modules you will follow a mini-internship at a leisure organisation where you do a research assignment. Afterwards you can specialize by choosing a graduation profile. This means that you are taking profound experience and knowledge for a half year in the following sectors:

The research programme has a high level. The programme works closely with its research institute ETFI (European Tourism Futures Institute). This institute specializes in the development and application of scenario planning for the tourism and leisure industry today, and in the future. It aims to create a common vision of all key stakeholders by actively involving them in the co-creation and implementation of the scenarios.

SPECIALIZATONS: SPORTS MANAGEMENT Choosing this specialisation means you will actively participate in the sports industry in the final 18 months of the programme, preparing you for opportunities and increasing your chances on the labour market in this part of the industry. RECREATION MANAGEMENT Choosing this specialisation means students will conduct an in-depth study of the tourist and recreational industry in the final 18 months of the programme. This graduation profile will prepare you and increase their chances on the labour market in this part of the industry.

CENTER OF EXPERTISE LEISURE, TOURISM & HOSPITALITY (CELTH) Stenden is partner in the CELTH. The CELTH is focused on developing and spreading knowledge about leisure, tourism and hospitality to make sure that this domain will be better equipped to boost the sustainable economic development.

EVENTS MANAGEMENT Events are increasingly used to intensify customer/consumer relations: it is therefore not surprising that the industry expresses a need for well-trained all-round event managers. Are you such a manager? Then choose this specialisation to boost your career opportunities in this industry. ART & CULTURE MANAGEMENT Choosing this specialisation means students will conduct an in-depth study of managing cultural organisations, such as museums, theatres, cultural centres, pop music festivals, etc. The specialisation will prepare you and increase their chances on the labour market in this part of the industry. Looking for a different way of broadening your horizon or deepening your knowledge? We offer approximately 80 minors. You can also choose from minors from other universities, or you can follow a minor abroad, or even an exchange programme. Or how about the Grand Tour? Study at one of our campus sites in South Africa, Qatar, Bali and Thailand and experience the classes as you are used to in the Netherlands, but with local teachers, international students, and in an adventurous environment. In other words, Stenden offers a great combination of high-quality, versatile education with international opportunities.

Year 4

In the fourth year students are in charge of their own development. Both the internship and the final assignment offer the chance to explore the industry or the kind of organisation you want to work for after graduation.

Internship Research and dissertation

Learning by doing

Companies about Leisure students

Leisure Management has a seven-month internship and a threemonth graduation period. It is also possible to work for ten months, during which you will work for four days a week and work on your final assignment for one day a week. Some students also take on two internships in five months time.

“It takes ‘Leichtigkeit’ to sell emotions” “At Prio Event Management GmbH in Berlin, we work with passion and joy in a small team of professionals. We expect team spirit from our interns, as well as loyalty, creativity, structured work and accuracy and the willingness to be best in class. In return we offer loyalty, challenging clients and know how. We guarantee a good time, a great team and fun!”

The internships are much more than operational work. It is important to show that you can communicate at management level. For this, you will carry out an analysis of, for example, new policies or a new company vision, and take on a supervising role for a while. The internship periods are excellent opportunities to explore your own talents, opportunities and what you need to make your ambitions and dreams come true.

“Interns can learn a lot at our company. We offer them the opportunity to take responsibility within projects as sub-project leaders. We also guide them very closely and offer the support they need. What students need to learn to become successful in the entertainment industry? Not to be too serious. We sell emotions and for this we need a certain ‘Leichtigkeit’ (ease).”

FINAL ASSIGNMENT In order to graduate from the Leisure Management programme, students have to write a thesis based on an actual case. This can be connected to the company where you do your internship(s). The research shows your added value to the company or to the leisure workfield: an excellent opportunity to leave an impression. There is great appreciation in the leisure industry for our students and the way they approach problems and how they solve them.

THORSTEN JAKOBS MANAGER

Many Leisure Management students choose to do an internship for an international company. For example, a student set up the event Meet Berlin for the Hugo Boss events department. INTERNSHIP POSSIBILITIES Leisure students from Stenden can be found at many companies in the Leisure industry. They did their internships in recent years at: › Convention Centre RAI Amsterdam › Golf Portal Sports › Hugo Boss Germany › Skate-Aid › Plan-J GmbH › Event company PoWWow › NOC*NSF Netherlands Olympic Committee › TUI group › La M Bounty Adventures Curacoa › Four Seasons Hotel DOHA › Dutch Dance Theatre

Career

prospe International Leisure Management dares students to become commercial and creative managers in the leisure industry within the framework of a sustainable philosophy.

FROM GERMANY

STEFAN OSTERTAG

“I was very determined to do a bachelor in business and sports and was surprised I could do this in the Netherlands. In Germany the study program is very individual. Quite young I knew how to work on my own. But I also wanted to develop my leadership skills and learn how to work in teams. Stenden Leisure Management offered both worlds. “I finished my studies in 2009. I work as a famous people manager in the sports, culture and arts industry. I never regret the choices I made. As a matter of fact, today I would choose the same programme again. My knowledge of the sports, culture and arts sector is very helpful in my current job.”

OPPORTUNITIES Graduates are expected to have developed a sustainable vision on leisure, to think strategically, to be multi-disciplinary and to able to act in management, decision-making and consultancy positions. With a degree in Leisure Management, students could take on a position as: › Events Manager for a sports marketing company, developing new concepts for sports events, integrating sustainable initiatives and executing the concept in collaboration with the client. › Programme Manager for a large pop podium, deciding which bands will play, taking care of the negotiations and coordinating the shows. › Marketing and Communication Manager for a theme park, working with a communications team to ensure that the park and each of its attractions are uniquely placed in the market. › Project Manager for a museum advising on and developing the setup of cultural educational programmes. Because Leisure Management is a broad management programme, graduates can also work in other service industries or start up their own business. In other words: a world of opportunities for graduates in today’s happening, exciting and valuable leisure industry.

ects

After finishing the Leisure Management programme, students can often take on excellent positions in commercial companies. However, you can also conclude the programme with a master’s degree. Stenden offers a Master of International Leisure & Tourism Studies. The programme approaches the work field from economic management perspective: tourism and leisure are regarded as key drivers for economic progress and its power to generate jobs and income. In addition, the programme also expressly concentrates on the effects of tourism and leisure on local communities and the environment, stressing the importance of sustainable added value to these communities. The master International Event Management could also be an interesting choice. The master focuses on Live and Event Media Industries, Imagineering and the Experience Economy, Events Marketing, Research Methods, Strategic Management and Management and Event Experience. The ultimate goal of this programme is that students are able to successfully put together an international event.

“I have grown tremendously because of this beautiful journey” “I followed the Innovative Tourism minor in Port Alfred in South Africa. I discovered a lot about this beautiful country in the two and a half months that I studied at Stenden University: the relaxed culture, the friendly and lovely people, and the wonderful history. South Africa is a special country with a very rich nature.” “Besides studying and being a tourist, I also volunteered in the township Nemato. Together with a couple of fellow students I assisted each morning with singing and playing with kids at a small school. The people in this township live a minimalistic life. They made their houses with loose corrugated metal, there is often no running water, a barrel is used as a toilet and there hardly is any food. Despite these terrible living conditions, they appear to be the happiest people on the planet. Why? Because the most valuable assets are family and friends. The townships in Port Alfred and along the highways really stuck to my mind. I have grown tremendously because of this beautiful journey. I will cherish this memory forever.”

The Netherlands The Netherlands – or Holland – has been open to people of non-Dutch origin for a long time. Today it is home to over 190 different nationalities and hence one of the most international countries in the world. It is a safe country by international standards, with low levels of violence and street crime. Dutch society is relatively non-hierarchical, for example, teachers tend to be very accessible and truly interactive with their students – which can help students really get the most of their studies. Last but not least, almost everyone in the Netherlands speaks English!

TINY DIJKSTRA

“17 hours of flying and I landed in a different world” “At the end of January I stepped on board a plane to take me to Bali, Indonesia, for ten weeks. Seventeen hours later I landed in a completely different world with a warm climate, extremely busy traffic and very friendly people! My time on Bali was great. I will never forget the sense of freedom I felt; going to the beach on a scooter and exploring the beautiful nature and culture, I will really miss it all! After Bali, I went to Thailand, the ‘land of smiles’, although I did not always experience it that way, the language is difficult, and their English is poor. But the islands are wonderful and Bangkok has a lot of beautiful things to offer. School was busy at times, but we did our best to keep our weekends free to explore the country. Travelling has really broadened my view of the world.”
