Introduction “Choosing the International Leisure Management programme means choosing a broad programme in an international context. Students are introduced to all facets and possibilities of the leisure industry: from art, culture and sports, to events and tourism. They will learn how to connect people and organisations, and how to transform ideas into experiences for diverse target groups. At the end of the programme they will have numerous opportunities at many levels in this industry. “Our programme stimulates students to think outside the box; it awakens their imagination and creativity while giving them a solid foundation in management knowledge. International Leisure Management is a practice-oriented programme that will help students get the best out of themselves. Curiosity and an active learning attitude are key to successful completion of the programme.” “There is a lot of freedom for students to shape their own programme. The Leisure Management programme offers the opportunity for broad development as well as specialization. Seventy per cent of our graduates find work in the leisure industry. Others choose to use their management skills and organisational talents in another area. Employers like our graduates; they especially appreciate their solution-oriented attitude and creative approach.”

“PBL gives you an opportunity to understand every task. Not just by answering questions from books, but from finding out what exactly is important in this topic and what you want to know about it. Moreover, PBL helps you to feel comfortable while speaking and creates an atmosphere you want to be part of. There are teacher-student relationships during that classno . You are the one who is leading the session. I really enjoy ILM. The mixture of theory and practice is very good. I feel that ILM is really preparing me for a job in the leisure industry and I enjoy it. There is a mixture of hard study and exciteme nt in ILM. One moment you are doing management research and the next you are in Disneyland Paris developing and thinking about new concepts. There are lots of opportunities open to students. I am glad that I am a part of it.”

FROM THE NETHERLANDS LEO GLAS
“PBL offers students a new way of learning. It is no longer just about the theory; it is about understanding and applying the theory. This makes it easier to understand. Furthermore, because PBL is about conveying information in a group, your peers can supply any information you may have missed. This ensures that you remember a lot more than just reading theory for a lesson.”
Studying at Stenden PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
Unleashing the potential of each student - that is our mission at Stenden University of Applied Sciences. At Stenden you receive personal support and a myriad of opportunities to work on your personal development and expand your horizons. We offer you a programme that stimulates inquisitive and inquiring minds. During your studies you will develop three skills in particular that help you make a difference: › Understanding tomorrow’s challenges › Intercultural skills and the ability to operate in an international environment › Cooperating and creating with others. PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING: THE KEY ELEMENT
Problem-based Learning (PBL) is one of the key elements of Stenden’s education and is quite different from traditional teaching. It takes a little time to get used to, but after the first few sessions, students are always enthusiastic about this way of learning. Small groups of students meet twice a week to work together. Graduates acknowledge the value of PBL during their internship and career. Apart from PBL, lectures and workshops are offered as supporting classes for students. LEARN IN PROJECTS
Each study year at Stenden consists of four periods of nine weeks. During each period or module you will work on a theme with a close link to the real world. You will be introduced to all aspects of the theme through different subjects. These subjects therefore change per module, depending on the knowledge and skills you need for a certain theme. “Starting at Stenden was the start of a new life.” “For me, starting at Stenden was the start of a new life: quitting my job, studying again and doing all of that in a foreign country! It was a bit difficult to adjust to the international environment as I am typically German: punctual and strict, but after a while I relaxed a bit and adjusted to the Dutch culture – ‘everything will be all right’. “When I arrived in Leeuwarden, I was impressed by the atmosphere – totally different from German universities. The learning system PBL and the practice orientation were the most important criteria for choosing Stenden: after having worked in an office for one and a half years I did not want to go back to didactic teaching! Besides, the school is very modern and has all the facilities you need as a student. Compared to other universities in Germany it is very colourful and bright. I feel comfortable at school! The international environment made me feel part of the group. Stenden is not only a university, it is a community.” “The tutors at Stenden are very openminded and friendly – their doors are always open if I have questions. What I really like is that you have your own study coach with whom you can talk if you have any problems with the university or the studies. I have a very personal relationship with my study coach and whenever we have time we just talk about my study progress and have a coffee together.” PERIOD

Leisure Management is a typical management programme, where organising meaningful leisure experiences plays a central role. Students develop a solid foundation in the fields of marketing, business economics, new media, corporate social responsibility, concept development, creative thinking and communication. The programme prepares students for a career in the fascinating and happening industry of events, sports, tourism and arts and culture. Students are educated and challenged to stand out and make a difference in the international sustainable leisure industry. The first year is an orientation on the leisure market and service management in general. The focus is mainly on the operational side of businesses in the leisure industry. Students start a company and gain valuable experience in the diverse aspects of entrepreneurship. LEISURE LIFE This module lays down the foundation for the rest of the programme. What is leisure really? What motivates people to join in with leisure activities? What trends and developments play a role? What kind of leisure time do students have and how do they describe it? EXPERIENCE MARKETING The focus of this module is the leisure experience and the marketing of that experience. The module teaches students that traditional marketing is no longer effective and a different approach is necessary. Consumer psychology, experience marketing and transmedia concepts are important subjects. WORLD OF LEISURE The leisure industry consists of several separate industries: events, tourism, recreation, art/culture, media, and sports. We will focus on current themes within these industries, such as sustainability and the influence of social media. ORGANISATION AND MANAGEMENT Students learn about the organisations that are active within the leisure industry. What kind of organisations are they? What is the influence of an organisation’s culture on its services? Which leadership styles are important within this industry?

The leisure market will be viewed from a tactical management perspective in the second year. Students will be introduced to all aspects of organising an event. Next to that you will work on a project for a contractor from the industry. During the second year students work one day per week for half a year for a leisure company.
MIRELLA HEKIMOVA
“I feel as if I belong to an inspiring community in the Leisure Management programme. What I like most about my studies is the broad variety of work fields for employment later. I like the teachers too. This programme supports me in getting a good education for my dream job of becoming a professional. My advice is to be persistent, and to view challenges as opportunities for personal growth.”
HRM Employees are of great importance to a leisure organisation. This module takes you through all of the HRM processes, from developing an HR strategy to the operational execution of HR activities, such as conducting job interviews, progress interviews and organising motivational meetings. LEISURE OPERATIONS During this module, you will learn what it takes to organise and execute an event. How do you make sure the event is sustainable? What is queue management, for example, and how do you draw up a financial plan for it? In addition, you will learn to use models and processes to manage and monitor events and other activities for companies in the leisure sector. CONCEPTING LEISURE In this module you will be given the tools to create your own meaningful experiences. Concept development and storytelling are important themes. You will learn how to apply these within an organisation. LEISURE LAB This is an experimental module with a focus on the future of leisure, innovation and sustainability. You will learn how to evaluate events and projects and how to apply several techniques, such as social media, scenario planning and creative thinking. ASSOCIATE DEGREE If you are studying for the Associate Degree, you will get this degree in this year. If you are not done studying, you can decide to enroll into the Bachelor Degree. Year 4
In the fourth year students are in charge of their own development. Both the internship and the dissertation offer students the chance to explore the industry or the kind of organisations they would like to work for after graduation.
Internship Dissertation
Companies on Leisure students
Learning by doing Leisure Management has a eight-month internship and a threemonth graduation period. You will work for four days a week and spend one day a week on your final assignment.
“It takes ‘Leichtigkeit’ to sell emotions.” “At Prio Event Management GmbH in Berlin, we work with passion and joy in a small team of professionals. We expect team spirit from our interns, as well as loyalty, creativity, structured work and accuracy and the willingness to be best in class. In return we offer loyalty, challenging clients and know-how. We guarantee a good time, a great team and fun!”
The internships are much more than just operational work. It is important to show that you can communicate at management level. For example, you will carry out an analysis of new policies or a new company vision, or take on a supervising role for a while. The internship periods offer an excellent chance to explore your own talents, opportunities and what you need to make your ambitions and dreams come true. DISSERTATION In order to graduate from the Leisure Management programme, students have to write a thesis based on an actual case. This can be connected to the company where you do your internships. The research shows your added value to the company or to the leisure industry and is an excellent opportunity to make an impression. There is great appreciation in the leisure industry for our students and their approach to and solutions for problems.
“Interns can learn a lot at our company. We offer them the opportunity to take responsibility within projects as sub-project leaders. We also guide them very closely and offer the support they need. What do students need to learn to become successful in the entertainment industry? Not to be too serious. We sell emotions and for this we need a certain ‘Leichtigkeit’ (ease).”
Many Leisure Management students choose to do an internship for an international company. INTERNSHIP POSSIBILITIES Leisure students from Stenden can be found at many companies in the leisure industry. In recent years, our students did their internships at: › Convention Centre RAI Amsterdam › Golf Portal Sports › Hugo Boss Germany › Skate-Aid › Plan-J GmbH › Event company PoWWow › NOC*NSF Netherlands Olympic Committee › TUI group › La M Bounty Adventures Curaçao › Four Seasons Hotel Doha › Dutch Dance Theatre

prosp International Leisure Management dares students to become commercial and creative managers in the leisure industry within the framework of a sustainable philosophy.
FROM GERMANY
STEFAN OSTERTAG
“I was very determined to do a bachelor in business and sports and was surprised I could do this in the Netherlands. In Germany the study program is very individual. I already knew how to work on my own from quite a young age, but I also wanted to develop my leadership skills and learn how to work in teams. Stenden Leisure Management offered both worlds. “I finished my studies in 2009. I work as a manager of famous people in the sports, culture and arts industry. I never regret the choices I made. As a matter of fact, today I would choose the same programme again. My knowledge of the sports, culture and arts sector is very helpful in my current job.” 8
OPPORTUNITIES Graduates are expected to have developed a sustainable vision for leisure, to think strategically, to be multidisciplinary and able to act in management, decision-making and consultancy positions. With a degree in Leisure Management, students can take on a position as: › Events Manager for a sports marketing company, developing new concepts for sports events, integrating sustainable initiatives and executing the concept in collaboration with the client. › Programme Manager for a large pop podium, deciding which bands will play, taking care of the negotiations and coordinating the shows. › Marketing and Communication Manager for a theme park, working with a communications team to ensure that the park and each of its attractions are uniquely placed in the market. › Project Manager for a museum advising on and developing the set-up of cultural educational programmes. Because Leisure Management is a broad management programme, graduates can also work in other service industries or start up their own businesses. In other words, there is a world of opportunities for graduates in today’s happening, exciting and valuable leisure industry.

FROM THE NETHERLANDS
BARBARE BERENDS
“Leisure Management combines challenging education with inter national experience that trains entrepreneurial students to become commercial and creative managers in the leisure industry within the framework of a sustainable philosophy. The mission is based on the following vision: ‘Serving to improve the quality of life’. You can learn a lot from books, but you learn the most from practice. And actually, that is the best preparation for being successful in business.”
Considering a Master’s degree? There are excellent job opportunities in the industry for students graduating from Leisure Management. However there is a demand for postgraduates at Master’s level who have relevant business and research skills as well as strategic capability. For those students who have this ambition, Stenden offers the possibility to graduate with a Master’s degree. In cooperation with the University of Derby (UK), we offer two international Master’s programmes, the Master in International Leisure & Tourism Studies and the Master in International Hospitality and Service Management. Students can opt for a single Dutch Master of Arts (MA) degree or gain a dual award made up of a Dutch Master of Arts (MA) degree and a British Master of Science (MSc) degree. Both Masters are offered in a 14 month programme. This is a unique way for students to distinguish themselves in the tourism or hospitality industry.

I discovered a lot abou ths mon beautiful country in the two and a half ed that I studied at Stenden University: the relax the culture, the friendly and lovely people, and try wonderful history. South Africa is a special coun with a very rich nature.” “As well as studying and being a tourist, I also volunteered in the township Nemato. Together with a couple of fellow students I assisted each a morning with singing and playing with kids at a live ship small school. The people in this town e minimalistic life. Their houses are built from loos r, wate corrugated metal, there is often no running a barrel is used as a toilet and there is hardly any food. Despite these terrible living conditions, they appear to be the happiest people on the planet. ily Why? Because the most valuable assets are fam and and friends. The townships in Port Alfred have along the highways really stuck in my mind. I grown tremendously because of this beautiful journey. I will cherish this memory forever.”

The Netherlands The Netherlands – or Holland – has been open to people of non-Dutch origin for a long time. Today it is home to over 190 different nationalities and hence one of the most international countries in the world. It is a safe country by international standards, with low levels of violence and street crime. Dutch society is relatively non-hierarchical. For example, teachers tend to be very accessible and truly interactive with their students, which can help students really get the most out of their studies. Last but not least, almost everyone in the Netherlands speaks English!

TINY DIJKSTRA
“17 hours of flying and I landed in a different world.” “At the end of January I stepped on board a plane to fly to Bali, Indonesia, for ten weeks. Seventeen hours later I landed in a completely different world with a warm climate, extremely busy traffic and very friendly people! My time in Bali was great. I will never forget the sense of freedom I felt; going to the beach on a scooter and exploring the beautiful nature and culture, I will really miss it all! After Bali, I went to Thailand, the ‘land of smiles’, although I did not always experience it that way – the language is difficult, and their English is poor. But the islands are wonderful and Bangkok has a lot of beautiful things to offer. School was busy at times, but we did our best to keep our weekends free to explore the country. Travelling has really broadened my view of the world.”
Grand Tour The Grand Tour offers you the possibility of studying at our international campuses in the Netherlands, South Africa, Qatar, Indonesia and Thailand (www. stenden.com/grandtour).
