“Our Media and Entertainment Management programme focuses on managing creative people and creative processes. You will learn this in our international and intercultural setting with excellent facilities. We have modern radio, TV and music studios with the newest equipment. Equally important for your future is that we have a lot of contact with large companies at home and abroad, and most of our teachers have earned their mark in the entertainment industry”. “Our slogan is ‘become a star behind the screen.’ A media production is by definition teamwork. For this reason, you work intensively with fellow students during the programme. The assignments you work on are actual assignments from practice and they are partly done with contractors. This is how you learn all aspects of the trade and discover your role as a manager.” “The programme Media and Entertainment Management appeals to the students’ creativity and stimulates entrepreneurship, and they will also gain a sound economic foundation. There is a high demand for high-qualified professionals. Not just in the media and entertainment industry, but also in large companies and organizations that communicate with a broad audience. Our programme therefore offers many future opportunities for an exciting and challenging career in the media world. Are you ready for that important role behind the scenes?” MARIJKE DE JAGER ACADEMIC DEAN MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT MANAGEMENT

Studying at Stenden
FROM THE NETHERLANDS
PROBLEM BASED LEARNING: THE KEY ELEMENT
Problem Based Learning (PBL) is one of the key elements of Stenden’s education and it is quite different from traditional teaching. Next to PBL theory classes and workshops are offered as supporting classes for students. It takes a little time getting used to it, but after the first few sessions, students are always enthusiastic about this way of learning. Students meet twice a week in groups of 12 to 15 and work together to systemically solve cases and problems reflecting real-life situations. Graduates acknowledge the value of PBL during internship and career.
LISETTE DRENT
“The Media and Entertainment Management programme at Stenden provides a sound foundation for my current study in the field of marketing. During my bachelor programme, I discovered that this subject suits me well.”
LEARN PER THEME
Each study year at Stenden has four blocks of ten weeks. You work on one theme per block, in which practice is the focus. You will be introduced to all aspects of the theme in different subjects. The subjects therefore change per block, depending on the knowledge and skills you need for a certain theme. The block is concluded with a project, in which all ‘building blocks’ are integrated. PERSONAL COACHING
A coach wil be assigned to you at the start of the programme. This coach will guide you personally during the entire programme and will help you think critically about yourself, your way of learning and your future career. There will always be someone who knows you, advises you and helps you further.

In the first year, students will be introduced to all aspects of the media and entertainment industry: from concepts to resources. From classic media such as print and radio to new, social media.
Year 1 Introduction Research A production
The world of media The Media and Entertainment Management programme starts with Problem Based Learning (PBL), where students work on international cases in groups. During the first period, students will be guided in such a way that assignments are carried out properly from beginning to end, and they will also get acquainted with the PBL teaching method. After the introduction to the world of media in the first module, students will be doing the work themselves in the second module. They will gain insight into the operational process of a media production, and create their own product at the learning company. This practice-oriented module challenges their creativity and develops their management skills. During the third module, the ins and outs of a media company are explored. We will zoom in on the company, take a closer look at human resources policies and the economic side of the organisation, and report the findings. The first year is concluded with Media and Marketing, where students learn how to determine a target group and how this target group can be served best.

Year 2
The second year is a year of deepening. The subjects from the first year are taken a step further. The assignments and research become more complex and your management skills are developed even further. Discover your future work field and the meaning of media in today’s world.
HRM Branding Production plan
From plan to implementation In the HRM module, you will discover aspects of being a manager and what skills you need to find and select the right people for a production. In addition, you learn to make sure that there is room for the creative process without missing the deadline or going over the budget. During this module other management skills are also practiced, such as conducting performance interviews. In the second module you will go deeper into the societal aspect of the different media throughout history, and research how to use media in societal processes. The subject Branding & Communication will further research media and target groups: discover for example how a company or organisation can showcase itself in such a way that readers, viewers or followers believe its story. The second year is concluded with a production plan. You will be responsible for the whole process, from concept to implementation. Which ingredients are needed to create a cross-media production? How do you make sure there is a solid financial substantiation? Who takes care of the catering on the set and where does the clothing for the models come from? You will pitch your final plan to a professional jury. DID YOU KNOW THAT MEM… …is a broad professional programme with many career opportunities …will educate you to become a ‘manager of the creatives’ …has its own learning company where students work on media productions …offers internships all over the world; from Peru to the USA …interns are wanted because of their strong independence …..scores high in student evaluations ….at Stenden is the best MEM programme of the Netherlands, according to Elsevier keuzegids HBO [choice guide higher education] September 2012

The order of the modules is not fixed in the third year. It is possible to start with minors, but also with the Strategic Management or Media Production curriculum. Many students will follow part of the year abroad; this could be the Grand Tour or they follow a minor as an exchange student.
Year 3 Strategic management Learning company Minors
The real work
Learning Company
The Strategic Management module teaches you how companies reach their objectives, based on a certain vision. Which steps need to be taken and what are the desired skills of a manager to make that happen? You will discover how to develop a strategy and how this strategy can be implemented in real cases.
The MEM learning company has well-equipped studios where students learn how to deal with the software and hardware of the media and entertainment industry. There is a band present every week to do recordings. The students organise the entire production: from the selection and invitation of musicians to the presentation of the CD in an attractively designed cover. Students also take care of the production of the biweekly TV broadcast via Youtube.
The time period spent at the learning company is like a mini internship. Students will do their research independently or develop a media production. They will also be in charge of a couple of first year students, which is excellent practice for developing management skills. The module provides a solid basis and preparation for the internship and final year.
Students are supervised in the learning company by coaches who have extensive experience in the media entertainment industry. In the first year, the main focus will be on the world behind the scenes. In the third year, student will take on a ‘mini internship’ at the learning company, where they carry out an operational assignment, such as organizing the entertainment in the campus bar, a TEDx event or a guest lecture by experts from the industry for your fellow students (excellent for your network!)
MINORS There are different minors to choose from at MEM, and some of these can be followed at the Stenden campuses in Qatar, Indonesia, Thailand and South Africa. It is possible to for example follow Event Management in Port Alfred and Spa & Health Management in Bangkok or on Bali. The Music Management minor is popular with MEM students, and so is Entertainment Education.
It is also possible to choose a research assignment, such as developing a media production for a contractor. Right from the start it is closely determined what the contractor wants. The next step will be to develop a concept and elaborate the implementation of the plan. When ready, the contractor will receive a complete plan that can be implemented right away. You could also choose to research the value of Facebook for a company such as CNN or BBC, or how an advertising agency could attract new clients. Many of the researches are done in close cooperation with or for the lectorate, which is connected to the MEM programme. The time period at the learning company is just as dynamic and fun as the real business! After nine weeks of real hard work, you will present your ‘production’ to a real audience, including the contractors.

Year 4
The final year is completely focused on your internship and graduation. The final project shows that you have developed into an investigative professional who can really contribute to the Media and Entertainment industry.
Internship Graduation
Getting started
Companies about MEM Students
The internship starts in the fourth year. It is now time to bring everything you have learned into practice. MEM has an extensive network of companies for internships, also abroad. Previous students did internships at ITV Studios, Porsche and Estée Lauder in Germany, Design Board in Brussels, Hospital Records ldc. in GB and Stray in New Zealand.
I’d say Stenden Students are well prepared to be successful in the live entertainment industry” “Here, at our German headquarters, we work with almost 200 colleagues. The Strategic Project Department works on projects that are not run by the regular operational business departments, such as long-term projects necessary to implement or follow the business strategy and to deliver improvement for the company. For an intern this means a diversified working environment, covering both management aspects related to our industry as well as the products and services of the company.”
It is possible to do your final assignment for the internship company, but you can also do research for another organisation. The final thesis not only shows that you meet the criteria of an accredited programme, but that you can also apply these criteria in meaningful recommendations. The final thesis demonstrates you can collect and process data and draw the right conclusions from this information.
“With that, we offer a unique opportunity to gain insight and knowledge in the business ánd the artistic aspect of Live Entertainment. Victoria von Holtzapfel is our very first Stenden intern. I am pleased with her input. She manages to transform her academic knowledge into our operational business, is highly motivated and has no problems when she has to carry out a task independently. She is able to communicate at all levels in a professional manner. From our experiences so far I think that Stenden students, due to their practically oriented education, are well prepared to be successful in working life. They bring with them the conditions which we expect from future employees.” SVENJA POSTAWKA MANAGER STRATEGIC PROJECTS AT STAGE ENTERTAINMENT GMBH

“A new home” “They call it Africa. We call it our new home’. This at slogan was the first thing I saw when I arrived h Sout . the OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg le Africa – my new home?! It still sounded incredib it that it and unbelievable, but I have to adm became my new home for the next two modules I as I got to know great and lovely personalities. ul derf won will never forget the experience or the people. I chose Event Management 1 and 2 because as a Media and Entertainment student I was always interested in the Events industry. The campus and school life offers a completely different experience than what I was used to in Leeuwarden. It is much smaller, and therefore ion easier to get to know everybody. The introduct week was really good and I enjoyed getting to know the culture, the food and the campus. I was I happy with the modules I chose and the tutors ed aint acqu ing had: a perfect balance between gett with the theory and turning it into action. We had to develop a concept for a real event that had to be planned, organized and carried out by the students themselves. Together with my team, I planned an event called ‘Anything that floats’, which was a boat race and had the goal to raise awareness for the National Sea Rescue Institution.”

The Netherlands The Netherlands – or Holland – has been open to people of non-Dutch origin for a long time. Today it is home to over 190 different nationalities and hence one of the most international countries in the world. It is a safe country by international standards, with low levels of violence and street crime. Dutch society is relatively non-hierarchical, for example, teachers tend to be very accessible and truly interactive with their students – which can help students really get the most of their studies. Last but not least, almost everyone in the Netherlands speaks English!

“All of my most challenging learning goals were achieved during my Radio, Television and Cinema Studies at Yasar University in Turkey. My selected courses included classes such as Television Productions, TV Commercial Design and Digital Photography, which involved expressing feelings and emotions through visual art. Our teacher took us to the streets of Izmir and showed us how to take proper pictures. Yasar University is very modern and serves its students with a Medical Health Care Center, lounge music on the campus, a rooftop bar, a sport hall and gym and two or three movie theatres. If you choose an exchange programme you will meet new people from different cultures, which is wonderful.”
