Our Media and Entertainment Management programme focuses on managing creative people and creative processes. You will learn this in an international and intercultural setting with excellent facilities. We have modern radio, TV and music studios with the newest equipment. Equally important for your future is that we have many contacts in large companies both locally and abroad, and most of our teachers have made their mark in the entertainment industry. Our slogan is ‘become a star behind the scene.’ A media production is by definition teamwork. For this reason, you will work intensively with fellow students during the programme. The assignments you work on will be actual assignments from the industry and they are partly done with contractors. This will enable you to learn all aspects of the trade and discover your role as a manager. The programme Media and Entertainment Management appeals to students’ creativity and stimulates entrepreneur ship, while giving them a sound economic foundation. There is great demand for highly qualified professionals, not only in the media and entertainment industry, but also in large companies and organisations that communicate with a broad audience. Our programme therefore offers many future opportunities for an exciting and challenging career in the media world. Are you ready for an important role behind the scenes? PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Unleashing the potential of each student - that is our mission at Stenden University of Applied Sciences. At Stenden you receive personal support and a myriad of opportunities to work on your personal development and expand your horizons. We offer you a programme that stimulates inquisitive and inquiring minds. During your studies you will develop three skills in particular that help you make a difference: › Understanding tomorrow’s challenges › Intercultural skills and the ability to operate in an international environment › Cooperating and creating with others.

LISETTE DRENT

“The Media and Entertainment Management programme at Stenden provides a sound foundation for my current study in the field of marketing. During my bachelor programme, I discovered that this subject suits me well.”

PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING: THE KEY ELEMENT

Problem-based Learning (PBL) is one of the key elements of Stenden’s education and is quite different from traditional teaching. It takes a little time to get used to, but after the first few sessions, students are always enthusiastic about this way of learning. Small groups of students meet twice a week to work together. Graduates acknowledge the value of PBL during their internship and career. Apart from PBL, lectures and workshops are offered as supporting classes for students. LEARN IN PROJECTS

Each study year at Stenden consists of four periods of nine weeks. During each period or module you will work on a theme with a close link to the real world. You will be introduced to all aspects of the theme through different subjects. These subjects therefore change per module, depending on the knowledge and skills you need for a certain theme. PERSONAL COACHING

FROM ARUBA

At the start of the programme, you are assigned a coach who will personally guide you during the entire programme and will help you to think critically about yourself, your way of learning and your future career.

It “PBL was a great experience! from ack db fee e eiv was nice to rec w they fellow students and to see hoadens handle assignments. This bro s and your perspective on resource outcomes.” 3

1

In the first year, students are introduced to all aspects of the media and entertainment industry, from concepts to resources and from classic media such as print and radio to new social media.

Year 1 Introduction Research A production

The world of media The Media and Entertainment Management programme starts with an introduction into the world of media. You will also get acquainted with our unique teaching method: Case Based Learning. In this teaching method, you will work on international cases within a group of 12 students. Together you will be guided in such a way, that assignments are carried out properly from beginning to end. This teaching method learns you to work in groups, experience more about group dynamics and it prepares you perfectly for the reallife scenario’s you will experience after graduation! In the next module you will gain insight into the operational process of a media production, and create your own product in the learning company. This practice-oriented module challenges your creativity and develops your management skills. During the third module, you will explore the ins and outs of a media company. You will zoom in on the company, take a closer look at human resources policies and the economic side of the organisation, and report your findings. The first year concludes with Media and Marketing, in which you learn how to determine a target group and how this target group can best be served.

FROM BULGARIA RADINA MICHAYLOVA

“I chose to study at Stenden because of the PBL system with real world learning. I was also attracted by the opportunities for going abroad. MEM develops the potential you didn’t know you had – my self-confidence is thriving and my management skills are getting better every day! The practice I get in chairing meetings, coming to decisions and multi-tasking is so valuable! I have learnt to be a multi-tasker, and to manage my own personal growth.”

Year 2

The second year is a year in which you will deepen your knowledge and understanding. The subjects from the first year are taken a step further. The assignments and research become more complex and you have the opportunity to further develop your management skills. Discover your future industry and explore the meaning of media in today’s world.

HRM Branding Production plan

From plan to implementation Media and Entertainment Management focusses on entrepreneurship and management of creative processes. We therefore take a closer look at Human Resource Management. In the HRM module, you will discover the aspects of being a manager and what skills you need to find and select the right people for a production. In addition, you learn to ensure that there is room for the creative process without missing a deadline or going over budget. Other management skills are also practiced during this module, such as conducting performance interviews. In the second module you will go deeper into the societal aspects of the different media throughout history, and research how to use media in societal processes. In the subject Branding & Communication you will further research media and target groups and will discover, for example, how a company or organisation can showcase itself in such a way that readers, viewers or followers believe its story. The second year concludes with a production plan. You will be responsible for the whole process, from concept to implementation. Which ingredients are needed to create a cross-media production? How do you make sure there is a solid financial substantiation? Who takes care of the catering on the set and where does the clothing for the models come from? You will pitch your final plan to a professional jury. DID YOU KNOW THAT MEM: › is a broad professional programme with many career opportunities › will educate you to become a ‘manager of creatives’ › has its own learning company where students work on media productions › offers internships all over the world; from Europe, Peru to the USA › produces interns who are wanted because of their strong independence › scores highly in student evaluations

The order of the modules is not fixed in the third year. It is possible to start with minors, but also with the Strategic Management or Media Production. Many students will study abroad for part of the year, either by doing the Grand Tour or taking a minor as an exchange student.

The Strategic Management module teaches you how companies reach their objectives, based on a certain vision. Which steps need to be taken and what are the desirable skills for a manager to make that happen? You will discover how to develop a strategy and how this strategy can be implemented in real cases.

The MEM learning company has wellequipped studios where students learn how to deal with the software and hardware of the media and entertainment industry. There is a band present every week to do recordings. The students organise the entire production, from the selection and invitation of musicians to the presentation of the CD in an attractively designed cover. Students also produce the biweekly TV broadcast via Youtube.

The time spent at the learning company is like a mini-internship. You will do independent research or develop a media production. You will also be in charge of a couple of first year students, which is excellent practice for developing management skills. The module provides a solid basis and preparation for the internship and final year. MINORS There are different minors to choose from at MEM, and some of these can be followed at the Stenden campuses in Qatar, Indonesia,Thailand and South Africa. With these minors you can customize your study. Pick the minor of your choice to deepen your knowledge of a special subject. Or you might prefer to choose a minor which teaches you more about a very new field of knowledge.

Students are supervised in the learning company by coaches who have extensive experience in the media entertainment industry. In the first year, the main focus is on the world behind the scenes. In the third year, students will take on a ‘mini internship’ at the learning company, where they carry out an operational assignment, such as organising the entertainment in the campus bar, a TEDx event or a guest lecture by an expert from the industry for fellow students (also an excellent networking opportunity!)

Employees with international experience are good competitors in the labour market. Therefore Stenden wants to equip its students with international and intercultural experience. Would you like to explore the world and enlarge your opportunities? Would you like to learn about new cultures? It is possible to for example follow the minor Event Management in Port Alfred and Spa & Health Management in Bangkok or on Bali.

It is also possible for students to choose to do a research assignment, such as developing a media production for a contractor. Right from the start there is close consultation about what the contractor wants. The next step is to develop a concept and elaborate upon the implementation of the plan. When the complete plan is ready, the contractor will receive it and can begin right away on implementing it. Students can also choose to research the value of Facebook for a company such as CNN or BBC, or investigate how an advertising agency can attract new clients. Many of the research projects are done in close cooperation with or for the lectorate connected with the MEM programme.

The minors offered within the Media and Entertainment programme include: ›M usic Management: You specialise in all aspects of music exploitation and learn what it’s like to earn a living working in the music industry. › Intrapeneurship: During this minor you gain practical experiences which help you strengthen your professional attitude and be entrepreneurial within a self-chosen (network) organisation. ›D igital Marketing Strategy in Bangkok: This minor aims to stimulate your creative skills and to develop hands-on technical skills by means of a complete digital marketing presence including designing a website and including creating a strong corporate design. Supportive lectures, workshops, and weekly assignments will provide you with a better understanding of digital marketing concepts. Bangkok is considered the creative hub in the Asia-Pacific region.

The time spent at the learning company is just as dynamic and fun as the real business! After nine weeks of hard work, students present their ‘productions’ to a real audience, including the contractors.

Year 4

The final year is completely focused on your internship and graduation. The final project shows that you have developed into an investigative professional who can really contribute to the Media and Entertainment industry.

Internship Graduation

Getting started

Companies about MEM Students

The internship starts in the fourth year. This is when you bring everything you have learned into practice. MEM has an extensive network of companies for internships, also abroad. Previous students have done internships at ITV Studios, Porsche and Estée Lauder in Germany, Design Board in Brussels, Hospital Records ldc. in GB and Stray in New Zealand.

”I’d say Stenden Students are well prepared to be successful in the live entertainment industry.

It is possible to do your final assignment for the internship company, but you can also do research for another organisation. The final thesis not only shows that you meet the criteria of an accredited programme, but also that you can apply everything you’ve learned to solve real business issues. The final thesis demonstrates your ability to collect and process data and draw the right conclusions from this information.

Here, at our German headquarters, we work with almost 200 colleagues. The Strategic Project Department works on projects that are not run by the regular operational business departments, such as long-term projects necessary to implement or follow the business strategy and to deliver improvement for the company. For an intern this means a diversified working environment, covering both management aspects related to our industry as well as the products and services of the company. With that, we offer a unique opportunity to gain insight and knowledge in the business and the artistic aspects of live entertainment. Victoria von Holtzapfel is our very first Stenden intern. I am pleased with her input. She manages to transform her academic knowledge into our operational business, is highly motivated and has no problems when she has to carry out a task independently. She is able to communicate at all levels in a professional manner. From our experiences so far I think that Stenden students, due to their practically oriented education, are well prepared to be successful in working life. They bring with them the conditions which we expect from future employees.” SVENJA POSTAWKA MANAGER STRATEGIC PROJECTS AT STAGE ENTERTAINMENT GMBH

The Netherlands The Netherlands – or Holland – has been open to people of non-Dutch origin for a long time. Today it is home to over 190 different nationalities and hence one of the most international countries in the world. It is a safe country by international standards, with low levels of violence and street crime. Dutch society is relatively non-hierarchical. For example, teachers tend to be very accessible and truly interactive with their students, which can help students really get the most out of their studies. Last but not least, almost everyone in the Netherlands speaks English!
