Introduction “The Tourism Management programme has built up a special reputation in the tourism industry. Employers appreciate a good balance between academic knowledge and practical skills. They not only notice this balance in the attitude and self-confidence of students graduating from Stenden, but also in their job performing skills.” “ We are proud that our programme was accredited by the International Centre of Excellence (THE ICE) as the first in the Netherlands and as the second educational institute in Europe. ICE is an independent accreditation organization specialized in tourism, hospitality, culinary arts and educational events. We also have the quality mark Sustainable Higher Education, with care for the community in the destination areas and the effects of tourism on culture and the environment as key areas. Both certificates illustrate the level of ambition of the programme. This will be to your benefit; during this programme you will develop into a manager who knows to find his or her place in his/her field with an open mind, anywhere in the world.”

PROBLEM BASED LEARNING: THE KEY ELEMENT

Problem Based Learning (PBL) is one of the key elements of Stenden’s education and it is quite different from traditional teaching. Next to PBL theory classes and workshops are offered as supporting classes for students. It takes a little time getting used to it, but after the first few sessions, students are always enthusiastic about this way of learning. Students meet twice a week in groups of max 12 and work together to systemically solve cases and problems reflecting real-life situations. Graduates acknowledge the value of PBL during internship and career.

FARAI SIBANDA

“I have experienced PBL as a very useful learning process. It teaches you to take initiative, solve problems efficiently and effectively, while gathering knowledge.”

LEARN PER THEME

“Tourism Management is an international experience. You study in a multicultural environment and learn about the history and customs of different countries. The programme works closely with Stenden’s research institutes in the field of tourism, including the European Tourism Futures Institute. The curriculum therefore has a strong research component, where you learn to address and solve cases at an academic level.”

Each study year at Stenden has four blocks of nine or ten weeks. You work on one theme per block, in which practice is the focus. You will be introduced to all aspects of the theme in different subjects. The subjects therefore change per block, depending on the knowledge and skills you need for a certain theme. The block is concluded with a project, in which all ‘building blocks’ are integrated.

DR. KENNETH MILLER DEAN TOURISM MANAGEMENT

PERSONAL COACHING

A coach wil be assigned to you at the start of the programme. This coach will guide you personally during the entire programme and will help you think critically about yourself, your way of learning and your future career. There will always be someone who knows you, advises you and helps you further.

In the first year a solid foundation is laid down for the rest of your studies. Students will learn about the tourism industry, company processes, management tasks and marketing. They will also go on a study trip to the South of France.

Year 1 The basics Professional orientation Study trip

FACTS OF THE TOURISM INDUSTRY As a future tourism professional it is important to really get to know the industry. That is why in the first year you will be introduced to important aspects of tourism and players in the market, from international to local level. Sustainability is an important theme in the tourism industry and therefore part of the programme.

Leading a tourism organisation will be the focus during the second year. You will study subjects such as Human Resource Management and Tourism Operations. Working on real-life cases will make students aware of the demands of the tourism branch and what it takes to be a successful leader in this dynamic environment.

FIELD TRIPS As a tourism student you will not just stay in Leeuwarden. The programma has three field trips this year. For example, a tourist product will be researched in Brussels, such as visitor management: how do tourists find attractions and accommodations in a town and how do you guide their search? In the Spanish Lloret de Mar, close to Barcelona, you will discover how an international destination deals with tourists. Organizing and staging a three-day event at a Dutch tourist location at the end of the year will be the icing on the cake!

Most subjects in the first year are one module and some take longer. For example English, Business Economics and Management Skills, these are important subjects for a future manager.

DESTINATION The tourist destinations will also be discussed extensively this year. You will learn to look at these from a management and marketing perspective. Which natural and cultural resources does a destination have? And how do you make sure you use these resources in a sustainable way? Learning a second foreign language, such as Spanish, French or German, will also be an important component this year.

RESEARCH ON LOCATION This year is concluded with the production of a professional travel guide. The travel guide is developed from beginning to end in groups. Part of the assignment will be to research target groups. This research is not done in the Netherlands, but during a study trip to the South of France.

1

In the second year, the focus of the programme will shift to the organisation. You will learn how organisations are set up, how they work and what they demand from leadership. This year offers a deepening and helps you discover what your specialization in Tourism Management will be.

DAILY BUSINESS The second module focusus on business processes and management tasks. For example, Organisation & Personnel 1 will introduce you to organisational structures, decision-making processes and policy areas in the tourism industry. What does a manager do during the day? We will take you through a typical working day of a manager from the industry. The next step will be to explore the world of marketing, where you learn to develop a fully-fledged marketing plan, including a financial plan.

Research options Research is an important part of the Tourism Management programme. From the start in the first year students will develop research skills. The complexity of the research question increases as the programme progresses. The research programme has a high level. The programme works closely with its research institute ETFI (European Tourism Futures Institute). This institute specializes in the development and application of scenario planning for the tourism and leisure industry today, and in the future. It aims to create a common vision of all key stakeholders by actively involving them in the co-creation and implementation of the scenarios. CENTER OF EXPERTISE LEISURE, TOURISM & HOSPITALITY (CELTH) Stenden is partner in the CELTH. The CELTH is focused on developing and spreading knowledge about leisure, tourism and hospitality to make sure that this domain will be better equipped to boost the sustainable economic development.

Critical and curious

The final steps

Students will carry out a large research assignment this year. Groups of four or five students will be working on the research of their choice. It is important to develop inquisitive research skills such as a critical perspective, but also to learn how to process data in statistics and formulate a proper research question. Previous students did research on tourism flows, the role of social media in the tourism industry and the impact of events on the environment.

YOUR STEP INTO THE PROFESSIONAL WORLD Take everything you learned aboard and move on to the next level: your internship. Under supervision of the internship organisation and Stenden you will work in the tourism industry for seven months to master all aspects of your future profession. The obtained work experience opens up more opportunities to find a position after graduation. Many potential employers appreciate this experience and see it as an important added value.

MINORS There are two minors to be taken in the third year, with a focus on a specific subject. Many students go on the Grand Tour and follow one or both minors at one of the campuses outside the Netherlands. The minors of the Tourism Management programme are directly connected to the location:

The graduation assignment crowns your studies. Many students carry out the assignment during their internship. If you are writing your final thesis during the internship, your employer has a say in the choice of the subject. If you do research outside of the internship, you decide on the subject together with your thesis supervisor.

South Africa: Wildlife Management Thailand: Community Based Tourism Qatar: International Destination Branding Bali: Spa & Health Management (also offered in Bangkok)

INTERESTING CLOSURE OF YOUR STUDIES The final thesis showcases your ability to analyse the tourism industry at an academic level and translate it into problem definitions and solutions. When necessary, your thesis supervisor will assist you, but most of the work is done independently. The graduation assignment will be a deepening of the gained knowledge and shows how you apply that gained knowledge in practice. For example, a student recently mapped the influence of sustainability on choices tourists made at the German holiday park where she was doing her internship. This is how the final thesis not only becomes an interesting closure of the programme but also looks good on your CV. Many graduates stay with their internship companies for paid work.

It is also possible to choose Heritage Tourism in Leeuwarden. This programme not only focuses on tourism possibilities, but also the maintenance and protection of heritage. If you choose Adventure Tourism you will be busy planning and managing outdoor activities such as rafting, climbing and GPS tours. Another possibility is an exchange semester abroad at one of our partner universities.

““A student can actually be a part of the organisation, that is great” “Manon Kouveld is currently doing an internship with us at the product development department. One of her tasks is to develop and provide Neckerman branding material for several destinations. It may sound simple, but it is a hell of a job to do each year. And I have to say I think it is the first time everything is done before the May holiday period. From flyers and beach flags to mascots. That is well worth a compliment.” “I find it very pleasant that Manon has no permanent assignment for the internship. Students often have a mandatory assignment that they have to work on for a day or a day and a half. This requires necessary guidance and time from our side. Manon can really be a part of the organisation the whole week, and can take on fun projects. For example, she was actively involved with our efforts to make hotel owners aware of the importance of online reviews, like Zoover. She also thinks along with us how we can use customer satisfaction for our marketing with NPS (Net Promotor Score). Her theoretical knowledge is at a good level and there is some more exploring to do in practice. She has the opportunity to do that with us.”

INTERNSHIP POSSIBILITIES Tourism students from Stenden can be found at large companies in the industry. Recent internships are: › TUI (in the Netherlands and Germany) › Brewster Travel (Canada) › South America Tours (Ireland and Scotland) › Magnetic South (New Zealand) › Hilton (Doha, Qatar) › Jenman Safaris (South Africa) › Iberinbound (Barcelona, Spain) › Holland America Line (Rotterdam) › Original Travel (London, UK) › Kuoni (Amsterdam) › Thomas Cook (Hoofddorp) › ATP (Schiphol Rijk)

Short track

“I obtained my bachelor’s in International Tourism Management at the Stenden University in 2011. Stenden has a highly international character, a practical approach and a good atmosphere. Leeuwarden is also a great city for international students. What have I learned most? Teamwork! You constantly work in groups and learn to divide the tasks and collaborate with different people and nationalities. This has really prepared me for the future. I finished my master’s on Malta at the end of 2013, and started in a marketing position at a language school in Frankfurt, with a prospect of moving to Canada! In addition to an internship in Ireland and my Grand Tour on Bali and Thailand, I have seen a lot of the world, thanks to Stenden’s contacts!”

Stenden also offers the possibility to graduate with a master’s degree. Stenden, in cooperation with the University of Derby (UK), offers several international master programmes: Master in International Leisure & Tourism Studies and Master in International Hospitality and Service Management. Spa & Health in Thailand Together with a friend I decided to follow the minor Spa & Health. No better place than Asia to do that. When we arrived, a couple of Dutch and German students were about to leave. They gave us some tips & tricks. After checking out our rooms we went directly to one of the tourist attractions: the Chatuchak market. We tasted Thai food for the first time and that was mind blowing. This experience is still the first thing that comes to mind when I look back. It was also great to experience the many possibilities for trips, for example to one of the gorgeous islands, I have never seen anything like that.”

BARRY NEHRING

“I chose four Tourism Management courses and one Business Management course. I really learned a lot from the Korean style of teaching and the subjects. Although all of these subjects were new to me, I nevertheless managed to handle them in the best possible way. The classes, students and the professors were amazing, and I definitely enjoyed my time at the Kyung Hee University. Korea and especially Seoul was amazing! I was directly drawn the fascinating and interesting culture and language. The people were the nicest I ever met and, in addition, Korea is very safe with a low crime rate. So, whenever I walked around through the city I felt safe. I highly recommend to take the chance and experience Korea. You will meet people from all over the world and interesting Koreans who will be friends for life!”
