HOLMENKOLLEN SKI JUMP status: ARCHITECTURAL STUDY [ OSLO _ NORWAY ] The subject matter of the project is to design a K120 ski jump on the Holmenkollen Hill playing an important role in the panorama of Oslo. The design, responding to natural characteristics of a close surroundings and basically of Norway in general, is conceived as a kind of living organism perched on the hill. The main load-bearing structure consists of two chamber welded steel profiles, supported by a bearing, which are subsequently connected with a central steel element via welded diagonals. A truss structure of a deck is welded to the middle profile. An elevator, leading to the highest point with facilities for athletes, is situated underneath. Thin ribs, extended from the main structure, are glazed above the deck and thus create a wind protection. Geometry and dimensions of the ski jump have been constantly optimized during the project. The main criterion for the structural design is the maximal allowable deflection. All the steel elements are varnished in contrasting black colour.

FAMILY HOUSE IN MRAMORKA QUARRY status: ARCHITECTURAL STUDY [ ZBUZANY _ CZECH REPUBLIC ] The house is placed at the highest point of an abandoned marble quarry called Mramorka above a natural lake in the northwest of the site. The look of the house is largely defined by its surroundings. The design responds to the surroundings of the house by materials used, the layout, and foundation. The main aim of the project is to integrate the building in the rare habitat and minimize its dislocation. The grand-floor structure loosely follows the uneven terrain and the configuration of the quarry. The building with one unit for a family of four contains an independent studio for a mason accessible from the east. The interior is defined by the dynamic form of the house. Main living spaces, with plenty of natural light and the most beautiful views of the quarry, are enhanced by wooden terraces pointing to the centre of the quarry. The house is raised above the bedrock with steel rods anchored into the ground. The wooden building uses massive glued panels for vertical and horizontal structures. The facade is covered with Siberian larch slats and glass walls. The design aims to create an environmentally friendly project and takes into account all the necessary aspects including construction time.

INTERIOR OF MRAMORKA status: ARCHITECTURAL STUDY [ ZBUZANY _ CZECH REPUBLIC ] Utilizing its unique location and surroundings, the house allows its residents an intense connection with their environment. The interior is designed in neutral shades of grey, while colours are brought by the residents themselves and the aforementioned picturesque surroundings. Nature acquires greater significance to the residents. To correspond with the rugged terrain outside, the design processes the interior and the object itself in a similar manner. The kitchen is visually separated by a raised bar. The main living space is elevated which makes it more representative. Individual operations are clearly defined by lowered ceilings and flooring materials. The master bedroom is connected with a dressing room and an open bathroom. A free-standing bathtub with a central fixture above becomes a dominant feature of this space. A seating near the south-western terrace is placed beside the main window of the bedroom. This part provides residents with the most beautiful views of the small lake inside the quarry.

FAMILY HOUSE IN CHVATERUBY cooperation: DOMYJINAK status: BUILDING PERMIT PROCESS [ CHVATERUBY _ CZECH REPUBLIC ] The house for a family of four is situated on a sloping plot adjacent to an ancient fortress from the 15th century. The main concept of the project is strongly influenced by aforementioned aspects. The building is conceived as two different units. Tectonic part corresponds to the adjacent fortress and serves as a sort of a base for a contrasting black barn, which, due to its sliding in two directions, creates terraces of the second floor. Main materials used are exposed concrete, black folded sheets, and waterproof plywood. The ground floor houses the owner’s shop, main entrance area, double garage and a workshop. In the central part of the second floor is positioned a side entrance into the house. It divides the floor into a private and a common part and serves as the main connection between a large garden and the house. Beautiful view into the valley of the Vltava River is formed directly opposite this entrance. On the other side an extensive glazing extending a wide terrace is designed. This provides the residents with the best view of the fortress.

FAMILY HOUSE IN VSESTARY cooperation: DOMYJINAK status: UNDER CONSTRUCTION [ VSESTARY _ CZECH REPUBLIC ] The task of a foreign client was to create an above standard house allowing a sufficient connection with the outside. The horizontal form is opening to the southwest, where the inner space is connected with a large covered terrace. In terms of disposition, the building is divided into a common area with a master bedroom and a private area on the second floor. In front of the garage is an indoor area for parking connected via a vestibule with the centre of the house. An elevated living room contains a dining area and a kitchen. There are two other important rooms on the ground floor – the fitness room and the master bedroom also allowing access to the terrace. A guest room, children‘s bedrooms, a workroom, and the main bathroom are accessible by a circular staircase. Both children‘s rooms are connected to a wooden terrace.

B&W LIVING ROOM status: COMPLETED [ STARA BOLESLAV _ CZECH REPUBLIC ] The original living room layout is kept during the reconstruction. The new interior consists of three main materials - smooth white plaster, concrete screed and slate cladding. The original oak parquet was preserved and refurbished. The suspended ceiling clearly divides the space in the living and the dining area. There are LED strips placed in its edges illuminating the concrete screed. The main front wall consists of a built-in TV, recessed black cabinets, and a clock over a strip of slate cladding with an interpenetrating fireplace and a horizontal cabinet. The seating area is formed by simple sofas and a coffee table made of concrete and stainless steel. The dining area is dominated by a large table made of technical stone with a painted aluminium base. Above the table are conical lamps suspended from the concrete screed. The size of the table corresponds to the missing part of the ceiling. Dining seating is complemented by six metal chairs covered in leather. Concrete coffee table, dining table, fixtures, clock and cabinets are tailormade according to the architect’s own design. The project was largely implemented by the investor and the architect themselves.

VYCEP BEER BAR cooperation: DOMYJINAK status: ARCHITECTURAL STUDY [ PRAGUE _ CZECH REPUBLIC ] The subject matter of the project is to design an interior for a new beer bar chain. The space is conceived transparently and rationally, with an emphasis on the importance of the quality of the beer. The main idea is to give the customers a “behind-the-scenes look by means of using seethrough glass walls. Characteristic features of the design include a contrastive black box of the background, massive oak tables with thin stainless steel frames, original graphic signs, and glass walls allowing a vista of beer tanks and kitchen. Furthermore, the space is complemented with beer crates containing the main ingredients of the beer and graphics illustrating the brewing process.

CONTAINER LIVING AMONG TREES cooperation: DOMYJINAK status: BUILDING PERMIT [ VARNSDORF _ CZECH REPUBLIC ] The project consists of three vertical towers serving as an additional accommodation for hikers in the brewery in the city of Varnsdorf. The main load-bearing elements are 40‘ shipping containers reused by the investor. The structures lie in the wood beside the brewery pond. Low-cost seasonal accommodation is placed inside a narrow container space. Each unit includes a bicycle storage area, sanitary facilities, suspended terrace, expanded living space with a small kitchen, and a raised double bed. Furthermore, the containers are supplemented by wooden tubes with greenery on the roof at the level of the elevated area for sleeping. The containers formed by self-supporting constructions with in-built wooden elements enabling the main structures to be supported by only a few additional steel elements. As a reference to the nature surrounding the containers, wood becomes the dominant element of the interior.

BARRACKS CONVERSION cooperation: DOMYJINAK status: IN PROGRESS [ VARNSDORF _ CZECH REPUBLIC ] The main aim of the reconstruction is to preserve the major supporting structures and raise the buildings to be vertically aligned with the rest of the barracks. The project preserves the construction system and fills it with residential housing and some commercial spaces. Recessed floor extensions and new balcony cages are covered with greenery and create a nice contrast with the originally dilapidating buildings. Additionally, the residential complex is complemented by a glass elevator extension on the north side of the complex.

MULTIFUNCTIONAL BUILDING HRADCANSKA status: ARCHITECTURAL STUDY [ PRAGUE - HRADCANY _ CZECH REPUBLIC ] The multipurpose building is located on the site of the public transport hub in Hradcany. The main idea is highly influenced by its surroundings. The original design of architect Antonin Engel included a block development and the concept of the shopping centre respects it. The designed block is deformed along the lines of the passing traffic roads, main walking routes, and also sunbeams. Walls, which have characteristic variable sheet lining, lean over communications, which leads to certain limitations in solar gains. A part of the complex block volume is removed on the top floor in order to create an outdoor terrace with the best views of Prague Castle. The main supporting structure of the building consists of welded steel chamber profiles which form a dominant feature on the facade.

RADLICE REVITALIZATION status: URBAN STUDY [ PRAGUE - RADLICE _ CZECH REPUBLIC ] The project processes the revitalization of the Prague quarter Radlice, which is currently in a highly chaotic state. The area extends between Kutvirtova street and the busy Radlicka road. Availability of public transport is excellent. There is a metro station, a tram stop, and a bus stop in the immediate vicinity. The design expands the current main functions of the site (sport facilities and urban amenities) with residential buildings in northsouth orientation. Among the houses are wooden terraces with seating and greenery which are used by people for meetings. A central square with trees and water elements is placed at the heart of the residential area. Another significant intervention in the territory is the connection of two major architectural landmarks of the area (a bank headquarters and a sport centre) with a green axis passing between the swimming pool and residential buildings. The design also reacts to the north side of Radlicka road. A new administrative centre is designed here. It is accessible from the central square via a raised retarder on Radlicka road, which regulates the trafic in the area. The current problem with parking capacities is solved by an underground parking in the residential and administrative area and a parking house placed to the west of the swimming pool.

PACIFIC OCEAN PLATFORM PRISON cooperation: DOMYJINAK status: ARCHITECTURAL COMPETITION [ PACIFIC OCEAN _ AUSTRALIA ] The main aim of the AC-CA competition design is creating a prison entirely different than the usual standard. The structure is located in the Pacific Ocean and, unlike other well-known platforms, is largely hidden under the water, making it almost invisible. The most striking part of the building is a ring containing prison cells. In the centre of the structure is a central courtyard for recreation. The project strictly defines sections for inmates, their visitors and the prison staff. The prisoners serve their sentences in an environment giving them a connection with underwater life which is the main precondition for creating a greater sense of freedom for them. Remedy of the inmates does not have to lie only in the punishment. This concept changes all preconceived notions of prisons in general.
